JNI problem loading jpegs

Question

In my application I used several JPEGs as ImageIcons. My application worked great from the commandline, but stopped working when I ported it to Web Start.
I load the JPEG from the jar file using the following:
ClassLoader cl = this.getClass().getClassLoader();
imageIcon = new ImageIcon(cl.getResource("images/infinite.jpg"));
And I get an exception that looks like:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

And the image was created using standard methods in Photoshop 7. When I converted the image to a gif, everything worked. Has anyone run into anything like this before?

Seems like a lot of people have faced the same (or similar) kind of problem. So my post comes to add to the list of cases this occurs.
I use .gif files for my imageIcon objects, which I load using something like:ImageIcon myIcon = new ImageIcon(MyClass.class.getResource(".gif'sFilenameHere")); When I try to launch my app using web start something funny happens. All ImageIcon instances are created and rendered appropriately, but for some .gifs I use to display as JTabbedPane icons. No exceptions are thrown or anything and it's just these icons that I'm using in the JTabbedPane object that I'm having a problem with.
When the app runs w/o web start everything works as expected. And even when I run the very same .jar that my .jnlp points to everything is fine, yet not when ran with web start. Is there some known bug about JTabbedPane icons?
