  • Compumoron attempts to play with big toys!  Disaster relief requested

I just bought a new computer on Ebay.  It is gorgeous, a great big box with blue lights all over it.  Fans whirling aplenty.  The C drive is two 128GB Crucial C300 SSD drives in RAID 0 array and the operating system is Win 7 Professional 64bit.   I bought this thing to do some music videos, which is just what the world needs, of course.   The video card is an NVIDIA 4000 and there are 2TB drives.  I don't know exactly how this is done but I did buy this rig to do editing of uncompressed HD video using PPro CS5.5.   I am not computer literate at all.  But I am under the impression that I should use the two 2TB drives to store video clips on, while using the RAID 0 array for the Win 7 op system, and the Premiere Pro CS5.5 editing program.  So I am thinking that I somehow import the video clips from the 2TB drives into CS5.5 which will be on the C drive.  I'll do my editing on this C drive, then store finished works on the two 2TB drives.   So far  I haven't been able to even install my Adobe PPro!   Why not?  Because I can't even get logged into Windows without the monitor going to sleep!   It's a new computer that was custom built and sold on Ebay, of course, but from a builder with a great feedback record.  The computer worked for a couple of weeks.  Trouble started when I downloaded and installed a Windows security update for my Nvidia Quadro 4000 video card.   Now when I try to log in to Windows the monitor goes immediately to sleep.  I tried System Restore to several different points in time, even going way back but it's still not working.  In fact, it's worse now as I've been tinkering with settings trying to find a fix for it.   Lately the thing's been going to sleep so that I can't even log in in Safe Mode, which I could before.  I've been fiddling with it for a few weeks now in my spare time.  So because of all the frustration and time spent trying to change settings and make it work now I want to abandon the Raid 0 array completely.  I read somewhere "beware of SSD drives in RAID 0 array!"  So I'm planning to buy a 256gb Crucial M4 SSD, the new series that replaces the older C300 that are in it now, and not operating in Raid at all. I'll have a tech do this, of course.  But I don't know if I should go ahead and buy this SSD or not so I am asking for guidance here.  (I also tried reinstalling Windows but the thing goes to sleep so I can't even do that)   But I see that Adobe says I must have a RAID 0 array to edit uncompressed HD video in PPro CS5.5.  Must I use a RAID 0 Array to edit uncompressed HD video or would a Crucial 256GB m4 SSD do the job?  The videos will be 5 minutes or less, generally.  I'll probably composite the video from about seven takes of the band playing, and pictures of local color and college girls on the beach.  Win 7 Pro and Adobe PPro CS5.5 would be installed on this 256gb SSD drive and I guess I should use the two 2TB drives to store finished videos???  Right now my PC doesn't work at all, can't even log in to Windows 7 and I am thinking I've got it totally fouled up trying to change settings in setup to make it work!  ARGGGHHH!   So I thought of this remedy, replacing the two 128GB SSD drives now in RAID 0 array with a 256GB SSD NOT in RAID array.  But I do want to edit uncompressed HD videos from a Sony EX1R camera and use Adobe CS5.5 to do it.  Is this a good idea?  I try to read the forum comments but I am an older user and have little experience with computers.  Many of the comments refer to devices that are unfamiliar to me.   Many thanks for any advice.  James in Corpus Christi, TX

    Hi Scott,
You're right.  It is an Antec gaming box.  I am planning to use a Sony XDcam, an EX1R. 1)  I think these are indeed EX files and as Harm said below, these are in fact compressed.  I will be doing the editing from probably seven or eight takes and with a few special effects I do want some power to spare so the work will go smoothly.  2) Thank you for confirming that a Raid 0 array is bad news for the C drive.  Again, my system won't even boot into Win 7 Pro with my two 128GB Crucial C300 series SSDs in Raid 0.  But what about a newer Crucial m4 256GB SSD as the C drive?  Would something else be better?
    3) From the Ebay listing I've got the other specs of my current system.
Asus P6T6 WS Revolution socket 1366 motherboard - X58 chipset motherboard.
    Details:
    Intel® Core™ i7 Processor Extreme Edition / Core™ i7 Processor / Xeon® 3500 Series Processor
Intel Xeon X5680 Westmere six core processor - 3.33Ghz with 12MB of cache - With Hyperthreading enabled, your applications will see 12 processor cores.
Two Crucial 128GB Solid State SATA drives, CTDDAC128MAG-1G1 - configured in a RAID 0 array (striping). This array holds the operating system and program files. Drives are housed in a StarTech.com 4x2.5 SATA backplane and connected to a HighPoint RocketRaid 2710 PCIe RAID controller and operate at the faster 6Gb/s throughput.
Two Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB SATA hard drives for file storage - Drives are configured as just individual storage drives, but could be re-configured in RAID 1 for mirroring, or RAID 0 for striping. There is room in the case to add  7 more 3.5” hard disk drives.

    Thanks for the answer!  James

  • Poor Reception in an area that's suppose to be a 3G Area & Other bugs

AT&T may have the fastest 3G network and were the signal is strong its works very well however where the signal is weak three bars or less the service is often interrupted because of poor service. The Apple Iphone 3GS has reception issues although I may be in a 3G environment I am lucky to have three bars of reception most of the time I only have two and sometimes only one. I think the problem is duly blamed on both apple and AT&T. On Thursday Friday & Saturday I was in Corpus Christi Texas in Nueces County Texas on the South Texas Coastal bend 3g coverage signal strength was extremely in consistent when over downtown corpus Christi I had four out of five bars when up the road from the local AT&T store I had five bars when out of Padre Island not far from the Bob Hall Pier I had one bar most of the time sometimes only two bars voice communication was fair however cellular data transferring or downloading using 3G cellular data was a failure most of the time I could not download app updates, could not play Farmville, Since upgrading to Iphone OS 4.01 the problem worsened and some apps no longer work and location services is buggy and sometimes does not correctly revile my proper location sometimes it doesn’t revel my location at all. After syncing new pictures in Itunes new synced photos often do not show up until after I turn the phone off then back on. On July 15 CNN money did a report on Iphone signal bar fix shows AT&T weak spots.

I just want to know when Apple & AT&T are going to get it together.

  • Hidden control characters in file generated by AppleScript?

    Hi all,
I've come across a strange problem. I have an AppleScript app (kindly produced for me by a member here) that gets called up by cron, which puts up a dialog box at regular intervals asking me to write down what I am doing (to create an activity log). The log is saved to my Documents folder if it doesn't already exist; otherwise my typing will just get time-stamped and added to the file.
This has been working just fine for several months (years), and now, all of a sudden, AppleScript konks out on me -- it simply crashes. The reason, I discovered, is the log file itself. It gets inflated out of proportions (something like 2.5 Megs where 40K would suffice) because it contains hidden control characters (gremlins) between each letter and zillions of them between words and lines.
When the script opens this inflated file, TextEdit balks ('Application not responding'), which in turn crashes AppleScript.
I discovered these gremlins when I opened the document in Classic mode with Word 5, which allows me to remove them and thus make the file smaller and therefore palatable to TextEdit again.
But that doesn't solve the problem: Every entry continues to be inserted with another load of gremlins, and I can't understand why. I deleted preferences both for TextEdit and AppleScript, and I perform regular disk maintenance.
TextEdit is set to save plain text files, end-of-line is Macintosh style, character set is Western Mac OS Roman. It's always been like this before when it worked ok.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    G4 MDD 1.25 GHz, 768 MB RAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Camelot,
The script doesn't specify TextEdit -- it just creates/updates a text file which I then read with TextEdit. Here's the script, and below is the link to the test log:
    --STARTOFSCRIPT------------------------------------------
-- Find out if the log file is actually there.
-- We can't get the last entry of a file that doesn't exist.
    set fileExists to false
    tell application "Finder"
if exists file "MacHD:Users:gisela:Documents:Gisela'sActivityLog.txt" then set fileExists to true
    end tell
-- Get the last entry in the log file to present to the user.
-- If the file wasn't there, present a default choice to the user.
    if fileExists then
set myLogFile to open for access ((path to documents folder as text) & "Gisela'sActivityLog.txt")
set logFileContents to read myLogFile using delimiter return
    close access myLogFile
set lastLogEntry to last item of text items of logFileContents
set oldTIDs to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to tab
set lastEntry to text item 2 of lastLogEntry
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldTIDs
    else
    set lastEntry to "Nothin' much."
    end if
-- Ask the user what they're doing.
set myLogEntry to text returned of (display dialog "So... What're you doing?" default answer lastEntry buttons {"OK"} default button "OK" with icon note)
-- Get the date and time via "Do Shell Script" (for me, easier than mucking with AppleScript's date results).
-- Modified order to Year Month Day# Weekday hour:min:sec [Gisela]
set dateUnix to do shell script "date"
    set dateText to word 8 of dateUnix & " " & word 2 of dateUnix & " " & word 3 of dateUnix & " " & word 1 of dateUnix & " " & word 4 of dateUnix & ":" & word 5 of dateUnix & ":" & word 6 of dateUnix & " " & tab
-- Open a log file on the desktop. The file is created if it doesn't exist.
set myLogFile to open for access ((path to documents folder as text) & "Gisela'sActivityLog.txt") with write permission
-- Write a log entry into the file.
write dateText & myLogEntry & return to myLogFile starting at eof
    -- Close the log file.
    close access myLogFile
-- Script by Bryan K. Vines, Corpus Christi, TX, via Apple Discussion Forum 22/5/04 and 24/5/04
    --ENDOFSCRIPT------------------------------------------
Here's the test log => http://www.webalice.it/gisela/TestLog.txt. Had to change the name because my webspace doesn't like apostrophes (').
This phenomenon only occurs in connection with this Activity log script. My gut tells me it's not AppleScript's fault, but I can't figure out where else to look.
    Kind regards,
    Gisela

  • Trying to figure out easiest formula to use in iOS Numbers

To all you smart function Guru's. Looking for help to see if this can be done.
All help will be greatly appreciated here. Using Numbers on the iPad.
My situation. In the "Pick Up" box I select a location from a drop down, it then puts in a numerical figure in the "HOE 1" box from the HOE Chart. (Easy part).
Now once I "Pick Up" I then select a "Drop Off" location (it will only be a few different locations) and want that to pick a numerical figure, depending on "Pick Up" and "Drop Off" location selected, from the HOE Chart and input the numerical value into HOE 2 box. This is the problem. I want it to look also at the "Pick Up" location to select the correct altitude for the "drop off". i.e. I depart my standard location and I pick up from  Citrus Mem Hosp and I am going to Shands (as in  the picture) I need it to select the Altitude from the HOE Chart that corresponds to the Drop Off leg (HOE 2).
Pick Up Location selects from B Column (HOE Chart) HOE 1 altitude is picked from D column (HOE Chart).
Drop Off HOE 2 would be picked from E, F or G Columns (F & G not completed yet) of the HOE Chart.
I am not a novice in using Excel or charts but am a novice when it comes to complex functions. Please spell out some of the function with your reply.
Again ALL Help is greatly appreciated.

    Wayne,
Thanks for helping and I think you are on the right track. The formula works in iOS Numbers with a little tweaking with 1 problem. Why Apple can have the programs work the same is beyond me but hey, I am a Windows guy so I won't complain.
The problem is that, and its probably my fault in the way I asked. I need the Drop Off (Table "Location" B2) to select from the HOE Chart either Columns E, F, or G (possibly an H in the future) of the Pickup Locations ROW (Highlighted in Blue for this example)
    example.
I leave my location (always the same) and go to Pickup Location = Citrus Mem Hosp. HOE 1 gives me altitude from highlighted Row + Column D (HOE Chart).
Now the complex part (to me)
I depart Citrus Mem Hosp (pick up location) and I am going to Shands (Column E (HOE Chart)) so I select that from my drop down list in "Drop Off" location(location table), I need HOE 2 (hoe table) box to give me the Altitude for Row (Citrus Mem Hosp) + Column E (Shands Column). If I select Orlando or Tampa Columns I would need it to select that altitude for the same Row.
I hope this explains it a little better and the pictures outline it a little more.
Your equation selected (once I input the correct Hospital name in my Drop off Location list) the altitude as if I was going from that location to GNV (Shands).
I hope this can be done as it would make our lives a lot easier and help us get in the air quicker.
Again Thank you for your help and time.
P.S. We just moved to Florida from Corpus Christi. Been up in your parts quite a few times.

  • Major Aperture failures...again.

After using Aperture for the last six months and mistakenly putting my faith in it, it appears that I have now lost my entire library of almost 280,000 images.
The backup vaults (4 of them) are all failing when attempting to restore the library. They crash the computer (G5 Dual Core) with no errors, just a freeze and then the fans rev up.
The computer has been back to Apple three times in six months and they refuse to do anything to resolve the issue after failing to replicate the crashing at the apple store. Of course, their idea of testing is to fire up a fractal generator and let it run and see if it crashes. Today, I have had 24 crashes in 5.5 hours just working in Aperture, or should I say, just trying to recover my images.
If I had only backed up to one vault, I could understand it but all FOUR of my vaults are failing to recover the images. I am a full time working photographer and this mistake of a system is on the verge of putting me out of business.
The really sad part about this is that I have a three year old PC running XP that I use for accounting that NEVER crashes!
I'm ready to take this G5 out back, load up some 00 in the 12 gauge and put it out of it's misery. After spending twenty years as a dedicated Mac user, I am through with it. I am ready to buy a PC and a copy of Lightroom and get some work done.
And what is this I hear about apple firing the entire Aperture development group? Is this true? If so, Apple needs to go public and warn people to stop using this software until it gets past beta stage. Apple is starting to follow in the footsteps of SGI, and we know where they are going.
I am open to any suggestions.

This may sound silly, but I have to ask and suggest
it, as it has been documented and it also affected my
    system.
I have a G5 dual core. When I first received the
machine, it was crashing all the time and the fans
rev'd up exactly the same as you described. The
machine was seriously flawed and I also was ready to
send it back to Apple, until........
I read that there is/was a problem with the energy
saver portion of OS X and the G5. Once I turned off
the energy saver options in OS X and did all the
usual zapping and rebuilding of stuff, my machine has
    run flawlessly.
I hope that this is the case in your situation, as it
    is easy to fix.
Should this fail, I would simply take the entire
machine back and demand a replacement. Don't leave
the store without one. If necessary, demonstrate the
crashing for Apple. Video tape it, do it in person,
show a log file from the computer, do whatever you
    need to do.
Thanks for the info on the energy saver...I'll try that and see what happens.
As for Apple and their response to my claims of a bad computer...they refuse to do anything unless they can replicate the problem in the store. The flaw in their testing is that they load a fractal generator, launch it and walk away. If it doesn't crash, there isn't a problem. They do not put the computer under any real world testing.
I brought up the video taping idea and they just kind of laughed. I asked if they reviewed the logfiles and they said that they wouldn't be able to tell anything from a logfile. Sure glad the computer is generating a logfile since it's so useful.
Here's my crash log for the last three + weeks...tell me that there isn't a problem with this computer.

  • New Netbeans Usertrying to do something-  probably the wrong way

I am working on a program that will eventually calculate the flight distance between two cities using latitude and longitude. I am trying to develop this with a GUI wherein the user will choose two cities from two combo boxes. My first step is get the names of the cities from an input text file. Then I would like to populate a linked list with the values from the file, which also includes values for the latitude and longitude. I am using Netbeans to develop this program, and I understand that instead of a LinkedList it would be better to use a List but I am figuring things out one at time. So once I get the names and other data into the LinkedList, I would like to put just the names into another array to use for the items in the combo box. At first I just want to get the airport names into one combo box, just to see if I can do it before moving on. I am open to any suggestions on making improvements to the program, but I have hit a snag. The program will compile but when I run it several NullPointerException errors occur and I am not sure why. Also I tried to debug the program to see if any values were being moved into the Linked List and the array, but the debugger doesn't stop at the lines where I put the breakpoints <inside the try statement>. It does stop at the line that starts with Filereader when I put breakpoint there, but when I continue to the next line It skips to the next method, and the errors occur, and the program ends.
There is a lot of code, thanks in advance to anyone willing to sort out this mess.

If you want some advice. I'd chuck the GUI aside until you get the basics down. And give some thought to less static. You have too much reliance on static members
which isn't helping you and is going to make your code more difficult as time goes on.
The most pressing issue you have right now though is that I don't see airportArray[] being initialized before you try and use it in main. So it would still be null at that
point and blow up with a NullPointerException

  • UML295 on Apple Laptop

Over the last few months, I have noticed a significant increase in the number of times I am dropped off the internet using the UML295 on my Apple. The service has fallen off so bad that we are considering dropping the service even though Verizon does seem to have the largest service area (which is important as we travel in a motorhome).  When we first purchased it, we had good service in Corpus Christi. Now, we have to log back on constantly. Anyone have any ideas what my problem is ?  I have been unable to get a helper from Verizon on the phone to discuss, nor can I get a chat started with a Verizon representative.

USMCJS, a few months is a long time to have an ongoing connection issue on your USB device. We're stepping in to help. Since having this issue, have you powered that device off/on to soft reset it? Additionally, we also recommend that you remove that USB connection from your Apple device and then reconnect it. • Executing SSIS packages through SQL Server Jobs.

    Hi,
I have an SSIS package which generates xml and text files and ftps it to an ftp site. When i run the package from BIDS it works successfully but when i run it from a job it fails. My SSIS package connects to DB server A and though i'm creating a job on DB
server A but my folder structure and the package resides in server B from where i'm connecting to DB server A through Management Studio. I'm using File system in SQL server Agent Job to call the package. When i execute the job i get following error:
Executed as user: I\A. ...er Execute Package Utility  Version 9.00.3042.00 for 64-bit  Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights reserved.    Started:  5:08:05 PM  Error: 2011-06-21 17:08:05.11

Could you please tell me where am i going wrong?

    Hi Christa Kurschat,
I'm running the job under proxy account. And that account has sysadmin permissions.
I used following script to create proxy account and run my package under that account:
    I. Create job executor account
Highlight Security->New Login, say to make login as devlogin, type your password, default database can be your target database.
    Server roles: check sysadmin
    User mapping: your target database
Msdb database: you make sure to include
    SQLAgentUserRole, SQLAgentReaderRole,  SQLAgentOperatorRole
    Then click OK
II. Create SQL proxy account and associate proxy account with job executor account
Here is the code and run it the query window.
    Use master
CREATE CREDENTIAL [MyCredential] WITH IDENTITY = 'yourdomain\myWindowAccount', secret = 'WindowLoginPassword'
    Use msdb
    Sp_add_proxy @proxy_name='MyProxy', @credential_name='MyCredential'
    Sp_grant_login_to_proxy @login_name=' devlogin', @proxy_name='MyProxy'
    Sp_grant_proxy_to_subsystem @proxy_name='MyProxy', @subsystem_name='SSIS'
    III. Create SSIS package
In MS SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, you use job executor account devlogin to create the SSIS package (DTS) and make sure you can execute this package
in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. Compile/build this package.
IV. Create the job, schedule the job and run the job
In SQL Server Management Studio, highlight SQL Server Agent -> Start. Highlight Job ->New Job, name it , myJob.
Under Steps, New Step, name it, Step1,
Type: SQL Server Integration Service Package
    Run as: myProxy
    Package source: File System
Browse to select your package file xxx.dtsx
    Click Ok
Schedule your job and enable it
    I followed these steps.
    Thanks,
    Deepti

  • Need help with Sharepoint foundation web application stuck on "STOPPING" error job-service-instance-GUID Number already exists

    Hi All,
I cant get to stop SharePoint foundation web app service. Its stuck on status stopping
    I have tried the following:

    restarted the Timer Service
When I try to use powershell command to stop I get the following error:

    Hi,
It seems that the issue is in the timer job definition for executing this operation.
My suggestion is to start the service again and delete the job definition from the error and again try to stop it.
    This might be helpful:
    http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/22368/is-there-a-powershell-cmdlet-to-delete-a-timer-job
I had a lot of issues in the past when try to stop this instance after the Web apps are provisioned.
As general rule now If I have multi-server Farm topology that has servers that should not serve Web App requests I turn off the service prior to provisioning any Web Apps in the Farm.

    Hi Rajani.
ALV require the DRYPOR(screen) for display but incase you run in back ground which have to write to spool but in spool we can only write in format of LIST REPORT not inter-active report like ALV. That why
    system cancelled your process immediately.
    Hope it helps.
