Job Seeker questions

Okay, so I didn't get the job. I got the interview, but no job.
This has led me to several questions about the job hunting process, and I'm hoping to get a lengthy discussion going and pick the brains of Neil, Paul and any others who may have advice.
Question 1 (more to follow)
The people interviewing me seemed surprised by the fact that my current employer did not know I was looking for a job. And now I'm wondering if that hurt me. Is it proper etiquette to let your company know you're looking?! I thought that was a bad idea since, if they know they might just fire you and find someone to replace you to cover their own ***.
Question 2
Is it better to move where I want to live and THEN look for a job? (I'm trying to relocate from Northern California to SoCal about 400 miles)
Question 3
Can a male designer design like a female? By that I mean this. THe company I interview for was a hotel type company. Very elegant, delicate designs. My designs are fairly hard-edged, very 'guy like'. How do I design like a woman? I have a feeling I lost out on this one to a female designer...
more will follow, as they come up

Hahah, yeah Paul, my last name is Polish. The Wicz ending is usually a dead giveaway.
So does anyone else think I should move first? What about money? I've got some saved, but I don't want it to disappear while I'm job searching. I'd thought about getting a bartender or waiter job while I'm looking, but they aren't going to like that I may only be there a few months, or less if I'm lucky.
My current job may transfer me if they know I'm dead set on moving. They want to keep me bad enough that even though it would be inconvenient for them, they would do it. (probably) BUT I'm not sure I want to be here for another year, and so it goes, it doesn't seem fair to let them go through all the hassle of working with me on a transfer and leaving in 6 months.
It costs 250 dollars to fly down to So Cal on short notice. So if I get one interview a month, that's 250 a month on interviews, plus time and trouble to get transport to and from the airport. That is a pain, but at least I have a job and can make money while I'm looking. So even though I'm putting a lot of money out, I'm still making money you see? But if I move first, I'm completely not making money, yeah I'm saving money by not flying down, but think of all the money lost by not working.
I got an interview after about 5 resume submissions. Which seems pretty good, like I'll be getting interviews often. I've heard for most it's like 3 out of 100 apps submitted. So if I'm getting interviews often, I should probably be close. I just can't decide....

  • Work Paths, selections, and general doing my job better question...

I currently work for a company that prints "Fathead" like wall graphics, i set the images up to print for them, but im looking for a better way to do what i do. Specifically my working with illustrator and Photoshop to setup the cut line for each image. Here is my current step by step procedure:
    1) Open image (usually a JPG) in Photoshop CS4
    2) Using mainly the Lasso tool's i select the subject to be printed. I'm very fast doing this.
    3) Copy/Paste the selection i just made into a new and save it as a TIF file.
    4) Back to the original selection i Smooth and Contract the line a few pixels and hit "Make Work Path"
    5) Export that path to illustrator (which leaves me with an .AI file)
    6) From here im done with Photoshop and i open both the .AI and TIF files into Adobe illustrator CS4
    7) The .AI file i give a stroke and then on the Swatches tab i hit New Swatch, name it "CutContour", and select Spot Color & RBG
    8) I then copy the CutContour line, paste it onto the TIF image, and line it up over the subject
    9) From here all that's left to do is make it the right size it's to be printed at and save it as an EPS file and im done.
The main reason im asking for help here is because I'm not happy with the quality of the cutline Photoshop exports to illustrator (the ai file) after i make it a work path. The anchor points and handle's are often in need of a lot of adjustment despite the fact that my selection in Photoshop was right on the money.
One side note that might be a direction for me to head in,...
I recently was given a jpg file from a guy who said he had already made the selection for me. I wasn't quite sure what he meant but when i saved the image as a tif, opened it in illustrator, and hit CTRL-A to select everything i noticed a cutline was already present. After further examination of the jpg in Photoshop i noticed a "Path 1" on the paths tab, and more importantly that cutline when opened in illustrator was nuts on! Meaning none of the anchor points and handle's needed to be adjusted at all.
Now the person who sent me this file was a customer so i can't rightly ask them how to better do my job :-) lol ...but maybe someone here can tell me how they (for lack of a better word) embedded a cutline or path i guess it's called into a jpg file like that? This would at least save me the step of exporting my selection to illustrator as an AI file and im wondering if however they did it is more accurate then the "Make Work Path" option i currently use.

...useing File | Export | Paths to Illustrator is what i outlined above that i currently do...
My apologies for not catching that. Honestly, my eyes glazed over at about step 2 of your procedure.
I'm not happy with the quality of the cutline Photoshop exports to illustrator (the ai file) after i make it a work path.
A couple of possibilities come to mind. What Tolerance value are you using when you first make a work path out of your selection in Photoshop? 0.5 pixel is the highest precision available, and that's what you should use if you want your path to accurately reflect your selection. Be warned, however, that your path will likely end up with a lot of points, making for an unnecessarily complex path. (Try it with a simple circle.)
Another possibility is that you're working with a low-quality, low-resolution JPEG as your source image. JPEG compression artifacts can affect selection accuracy (with automated tools, like the magic wand or eraser), and overall resolution, of course, will limit path precision. Not much you can do about that other than to start with better-quality images.
After further examination of the jpg in Photoshop i noticed a "Path 1" on the paths tab, and more importantly that cutline when opened in illustrator was nuts on!... maybe someone here can tell me how they (for lack of a better word) embedded a cutline or path i guess it's called into a jpg file like that?
Using a low tolerance (high precision) value make a path from your selection in Photoshop and save the path. Save As a JPG, and the path will be saved along with the image. Do not use Save for Web to create your JPG file.
As others have pointed out in earlier posts, learning to use the pen tool is your best bet... and an absolute necessity if you're going to be doing a lot of this stuff.
Regarding the creation of clipping paths in Photoshop, slap me silly, but I'm going to refer you to the manual (online Help) for that. And if you think that unkind, try posting the question over at the Photoshop forum. Wear a helmet.

  • Job Scheduling question

If I request a ob to be scheduled with the command:
    dbms_job.submit()
How can I monitor the status of the job
Which table do I need to perform a select on ?
    Thanks

You can answer any question about the dictionary views by issuing
    select *
    from dict
    where table_name like '%'||upper('&keyword')||'%'
    in your case 'job'
This should result in dba_jobs, dba_jobs_running and user_jobs

  • Powershell In SQL Job Agent Question

I have absolutely NO IDEA where to ask this question since there doesn't seem to be a Powershell forum which I can easily find. Just getting signed into the MSDN forum was a painful experience with all of the "verify your account" questions which
    is ridiculous.
I never use Powershell and i'm creating a job where i'm trying to call an .exe file to download data to a CSV file.  The .exe program requires two date parameters - one for today's date and the other for yesterday's date.  I need the dates to be
    in the following format:
    20141110000000 (YYYYHHDDHHMMSS)
I have absolutely no idea how to pass these parameters to the .exe file via Powershell.  I've looked at several examples and not understanding how to pass this correctly, this is what i'm using currently:
    Invoke-Item Z:\DataServices\Five9\five9\bin\Release\five9.exe Get-Date -format yyyyMMddHHmmss Get-Date.AddDay(-1) -format yyyyMMddHHmmss
Obviously the above doesn't work and i'm just wasting time - can someone help?
    Thanks!

  • Webview Job Scheduler Questions

If you schedule a report to run in Webview - does the user have to be logged in to Webview for the report to run?
Also - where do the reports actaully go?
We are taking on a new business that wants some webview reports shceudled to run and dump to a location so they can grab them and import them into their own reporting database/dashboards.
I know we have another customer that has something similar setup - but it was done by a 3rd party contractor before I was on the team.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ronnie,
    Couple of things to note:
Webview Job Scheduler uses Windows Task Scheduler to schedule reports
As such, PC needs to remain on and the user who scheduled the job must be logged into WebView at the time the job is scheduled to be run (also needs to remain logged in if you are exporting to file and the drive you are exporting to is a mapped drive)
User who is scheduling the reports needs to be an administrator of the machine they are scheduling from in order to create the Scheduled Tasks
When you output locally to a drive letter. It automatically goes into a Drive:\Job_Scheduler\ directory
Hope that helps. The requirement for local admin rights is a real pain as usually in most environments it's end business users who are trying to do this and IT departments don't like giving them local admin rights to their PCs...

  • Cron job/tab question

    I have a script in /home/beheerder called backup.sh
Running the script by hand: ./backup.sh works fine..
Now I schedule the script to run daily at 2 at night.
So I do: crontab -e and add:
    00 02 * * * /home/beheerder/backup.sh
To test if it would run I entered the current time + 5 minutes.. but nothing is running, the only error i see in the crond log at the time i scheduled my job is a sendmail error:
unable to exec /usr/sbin/sendmail -t, user -oem, output to sink null
But i am not even calling send mail...
How can I make my job run?

    Problem is solved..
Stupid me added a slash in a place it didnt belong
    Thanks for you reply anyway.

  • Concurrent job executable question

    Hi,
I need to modify a report run under the concurrent job called Planning Detail Report. Normally, when the executable is an Oracle report I can find it on the server, but this report executable method is setup at "Spawned" and I am not sure how to find the code behind this report. Can someone please tell me where to find this?
    Regards,
    Steve

Spwaned program are found in the bin directory.
Since planning detail report is under MRP, you will find it under $MRP_TOP/bin
Oracle gives only executable for spawned programs; you do not get the source code. And it is almost impossible to modify these programs.
However, you can make some attempt to gleam at the logic. In the past, I have run strings command on spawned executable to sneak some peeks into Oracle's logic. I was lucky enough to find what I needed but that is not guaranteed.
    Hope this helps,

  • Job market question

    Hi guys,
I found that all the PORTAL jobs post at Canada are require PORTAL DEVELOPER only. Even can not find a EP job focus on EP admin or configuration.
Can any body tell me why? Now the Portal job market only require developer?
    Appreciate any discuss

    Hi,
SAP Basis admin can take care of EP J2EE engine administration with some technical training. EP doesn't require that much of administration once setup.
But, Developing involves the knowledge of Java , JSP and all other java applications. Every componies requirement is really complex an they are looking for a collaborative environment.
From my knowledge i would Order the languages involved in portal as,
    1) Java based development
    2) SAP ABAP based development
    3) .NET based development
Java based developers are more preffered since it provides lot of options and to create a good user friendly layout with applets.

  • WIP Job Packet Question

We developed an overly complicated Discrete Job Packet. It is actually a number of reports rolled into one. There is a header/routing sheet, the BOM, the routing and then a picklist. It is a character mode report. Here is our problem…trying to get the assembly drawing married to the job. Currently the estimate is 10 hours a day of people time to get the .tif file from a network drive, printing it and then stuffing it in the WIP packet. So we are looking to automate this.
Getting rid of all the paper is not an option for a couple of reasons…one is the sacred cow of paper and secondly we are not in the position to have over 250 resources (machines) have the capability to electronically look up their own information locally. I am told due to the character mode attempting to use an attachment of the tif file on say the routing doesn't work.
How have others worked through a similar problem?

How about adding the assembly drawing as a file attachment to the bom or job and then customizing one of your packet reports to show the attachment? I think you'd be able to print out a character report to a pdf and the assembly drawing should should show as a picture.

  • Job schedule question

    Hi:
If I make a change to a job, will the scheduled job need to be re-activate for the new change to take effect? Or will BOBJ recognize the change without having to re-activate the scheduled job?
    Thanks in advance.

You can change all the objects (like dataflows, workflows, ...) in the job, it will not affect the job schedule (so no need to re-activate).
The job schedule uses the GUID to identify the job in the repo, this will not change when you modify objects in the job. So the next time the schedulesd job is executed it will get the new job definition automatically.

  • Job Chain question

    Hi,
i want to schedule a job chain.
I 've created 4 chain steps.
The first perform an action and the second must be executed only if the first completed successfully.
The third must be executed only if the second ends successfully, etc.
    The Chain_rule_2 is
    CHAIN_STEP_1 Completed and CHAIN_STEP_1 SUCCEEDED
    The chain_rule_3 is
    CHAIN_STEP_2 Completed and CHAIN_STEP_2 SUCCEEDED
But the job is actually running because there isn't an end steps (I suppose).
End step must be done if all steps works fine or if only one failed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

You can add rules in Chains:
Chain rules define when steps run, and define dependencies between steps. Each rule has a condition and an action. Whenever rules are evaluated, if a rule's condition evaluates to TRUE, its action is performed. The condition can contain Scheduler chain condition syntax or any syntax that is valid in a SQL WHERE clause. The syntax can include references to attributes of any chain step, including step completion status. A typical action is to run a specified step or to run a list of steps.
All chain rules work together to define the overall action of the chain. When the chain job starts and at the end of each step, all rules are evaluated to see what action or actions occur next. If more than one rule has a TRUE condition, multiple actions can occur. You can cause rules to also be evaluated at regular intervals by setting the evaluation_interval attribute of a chain.
Conditions are usually based on the outcome of one or more previous steps. For example, you might want one step to run if the two previous steps succeeded, and another to run if either of the two previous steps failed.
Scheduler chain condition syntax takes one of the following two forms:
    stepname [NOT] SUCCEEDED
    stepname ERROR_CODE {comparision_operator|[NOT] IN} integer
You can combine conditions with boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT() to create conditional expressions. You can employ parentheses in your expressions to determine order of evaluation.

  • S_BTCH_ADM and SM37 job copy question

    Hello,
we currently have a requirement to allow some of our user to copy other users jobs. the catch is that we need to perform this action without using the S_BTCH_ADM = Y authorization.
so far we have tried to use a combination of S_BTCH_JOB and NAM with all activities turned on for JOB and a "*" on NAM with no success.
any one have any Ideas as to how to achieve this? your help is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Joe

we currently have a requirement to allow some of our user to copy other users jobs. the catch is that we need to perform this action without using the S_BTCH_ADM = Y authorization.
I checked this and it is indeed the case. Copying, changing, debugging etc other users jobs checks whether the user is authorized for S_BTCH_ADM = 'Y'.
So this is considered a batch administrator task.
