Join domain hosted by samba pdc

Hi.
I'm trying to join a Mac OSX client 10.5 into domain hosted by a samba pdc. Windows clients can join the domain without problems.
Does Mac OS X actually need AD for this to work?
Thanks..

Trying how? Are you using the Directory Utility application?

  • [SOLVED] joining Arch to a Samba pdc

    Hello.
I have a Samba pdc on Arch that works great with Windows XP clients for some time.
I was able to join (after starting heimdal-kdc on the server) an Arch client to the Samba pdc as per http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … ows_domain.
And it worked great until a reboot. Now gdm displays "authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info".
I found posts by Debian users that it might be the result of winbindd starting before the network is up, so I inserted openntpd between them and it still didn't help.

  • How To join Max OS C Clients to a Linux Samba PDC

    Hi,
we do have a working Linux Samba PDC for a lot of Windows XP Clients. Now, we'd like to join the fewer Mac OS X Clients also to the PDC, so that users can login to the hopefully same profile/home directory from PC and Mac.
Is this possible? If not, is it possible to only authenticate the Mac OS X Users against the samba pdc (without automounting shares ...)?
    Are there any How To?
Thanks for any hint and suggestion! Best regards.
    Götz Reinicke

    Hi Luis,
You also need to add the Linux user to samba using the smbpasswd -a username command, aslo the machine you are accessing needs to be added to the smbpasswd file using the -m (this can be run only by root)
for more details on the command do a
    man smbpasswd.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade

    Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
    1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
    2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
    3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
    An internal error occurred."
    Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):
    netbios connect: name1=BIGMAC name2=JEFFVM6
    netbios connect: local=bigmac remote=jeffvm6, name type = 0
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
    odssam_getgrnam gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Groups record for 'JEFFVM6$'!
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
kDSStdAuthNewUser was successful for account "jeffvm6$"
At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.

    The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

  • Username or password incorrect when authenticating client to join Domain.

    Hi guys
Ok so I'm in the process of setting a home lab up and I'm struggling to get my client PC to join the domain. I've installed Hyper-V on bare metal and put a VM on top of that with another instance of server 2012 which is running as my Domain Controller and
DNS, DHCP server. Everything appears to be working correctly, I've not joined the Hyper-V to the domain as I've read it's best practice not to do so. I've set up my User and given him Domain Controller rights, but when I attempt to join a client to the domain
it states the username or password is incorrect. This also happens if I use the administrator credentials. I've double checked all settings in DNS, DHCP etc and everything looks fine. I've even created another user account but still I can't get my DC to authenticate
    a client joining?
Can anyone suggest would may be causing this? I'm at a loss!
    Thanks in advance.

"I've not joined the Hyper-V to the domain as I've read it's best practice not to do so"
Depends upon the installation.  If you want to manage both VMs and hosts from the same environment, it makes it a lot easier when all components are joined to the same domain.
If, however, you are setting up an environment to serve as a service provider where you want absolutely no access to the client VMs, then keeping the hosts in a separate domain makes complete sense.
In my labs, I almost always join my hosts to the domain to make management easier.

  • Apply network settings join domain issues

I create a default task sequence in CM 2012 R2. On the apply network settings there is the option to join the domain. If I select to join to the domain, there is an account to set.  I set the account and test the account (test button right there) and
    the test to ad succeeds.
I then apply and close the task sequence.  if you go back into the task sequence, and check the account to join domain, the password is now much longer than the original (only dots shown of course) and if I click test, the test FAILS.
I am not sure if that is the expected behavior or the root of my issue.
My issue is my machines are failing to join the domain.  Under Windows\Pather\UnattendGC, I see a log file with the error, failed to join domain, error code 5 (something like that).  When I look up that error, I see it means access denied.
    Any ideas?

The task sequence will never show the correct length of the password for security reasons, so that's the expected behavior.
Could you share what permissions you've given that account?
These are the permissions that I use:
Scope: This Object and all descendant objects
    - Create Computer Objects
    - Delete Computer Objects
    Scope: Descendant Computer Objects
    - Read All Properties
    - Write All Properties
    - Read Permissions
    - Modify Permissions
    - Change Password
    - Reset Password
    - Validated write to DNS host name
    - Validated write to services principal name
This will work for every kind of deployment scenario that you may have to use the account in.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro has error while joining domain, while windows 7 pro has no problem to join in the same network

I am having the same issue as posted in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/6ea57e5f-6e9d-49bd-9dd7-832ea84c0276/windows-81-pro-will-not-join-domain?forum=w8itpronetworking
There are a few other people have the same issues.  However there was no real solution provided although the post was marked as answered.  I am posting it here again and hopefully I can get some help to solve this issue.
We got two new PCs, one with windows 7 and the other with windows 8.1 Pro.  In the same network with domain, the windows 7 pc has no problem at all to join the domain.  However the windows 8.1 Pro won't join the domain. On the windows 8.1 Pro computer,
I can ping the other computers in the network.  The error message says:
An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain "cmi" could not be contacted. ...
In my case, the domain name is "CMI".  I am sure the DNS setting is correct.  What did I do wrong?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I tried the solution in that article.
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters folder, there is no
NeutralizeNT4Emulator.  So I followed the instructions and created one, and set the value to 1. Then I restarted the computer and tried to join the domain again.  I got the same error.  Below is more from the netsetup log file:
    06/04/2014 21:36:37:256 -----------------------------------------------------------------

Note: This information is intended for a network administrator.  If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The domain name "cmi" might be a NetBIOS domain name.  If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
DNS was successfully queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain "cmi":
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.cmi
The following domain controllers were identified by the query:
    cmi-dc2.cmi
    cmi-dc1.cmi
However no domain controllers could be contacted.

  • Join computer in Domain and how to get Internet access in Joined domain computer

    Dear System Admins,
Actually I am new to this forum and I need help. Let me explain you my scenario. Ours is a small company and I have configured Cisco router with dedicated Public IP. So the private IP default gateway is 192.168.50.254 and DNS is 218.56.43.22 "DNS is
given by ISP". Now what I did is I have configured IP address to server 192.168.50.1/24. Default Gateway IPv4 address 192.168.50.254 DNS 218.56.43.22 on Windows domain server computer. Internet is up on Windows Server. Also I have setup Active directory
successfully. Now I want Windows 7 computer to Join the domain and also it should be able to access to Internet. Let me know how to configure Windows 7 network properties and how to join domain. Please explain me in simple way step by step process. Thank you.

    Dear Arnav,
I have configured DNS as  218.56.43.22 in windows server computer which has given by our ISP and
internet is available in  server. For users who wants top join domain. I have configured IP details are as follows.
    1. Windows 2008 Server IP details
    192.168.50.1
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.50.254
DNS: 218.56.43.22 <--- Given by ISP with Dedicated Public IP
Now comes the Windows 7 computer which has to be join in domain for that how should I have to configure Network properties of Windows 7 computer? let me know. Windows 7 IP details are as fallows:
    IPV4 address 192.168.50.2

What about DNS? What should I configure in DNS box network properties  for Windows 7 user. Shall I enter Windows Server IP details 192.168.50.1 or "DNS 218.56.43.22 <----which is given by ISP" . Let me know further procedure in order

  • Px12-350r unable to re-join domain - what to do now?

    Hello everyone!
I hope you can give me some advice because at the moment I am in a really stupid situation, being probably locked out of my Iomega px12-350r.
    Here's what happened:
     * The device has been successfully joined to my Microsoft AD domain and has been running with this config for at least a year.
    * I expanded the storage array 2 days ago, adding 2 disks. Everything went fine and when the expansion completed, the new total disk space was displayed correctly in the admin web interface.
    * After that, I rebooted the device. After the reboot, I could not log in to the device any more using my domain account. This account has had admin rights on the NAS and I have logged into the NAS using this account before.
    * I did not change anything in the domain infrastructure.
    * I know that the device cannot join the domain anymore because I activated email notifications and it keeps sending me "Unable to join domain".
    I already tried:
    * Login using the usual local accounts: Does not seem to work once the device is joined to a domain.
    * Login via SSH. Does not work, probably for the same reason as above.
    I did NOT try yet:
    * The user manual mentions resetting the admin password by pushing the reset button on the back. But will this only reset config (I would be ok with that) or will it erase the data on the drives as well?
I am from Germany. Despite having purchased a 24x7 service plan, German support hotline will only redirect me to the American hotline who claim to do only desktop NAS, no px12's. I am kind of in the middle of nowhere now. ;-)
    Thanks for your help!
    Best Regards,
    Florian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi qaware,
Just to clarify, are you talking about logging into the device's web interface or logging into your active directory client?
I would first recommend rebooting everything and restarting your client in case there are more than one sessions open.
What credentials are you using to log into SSH? User should be "root" and password is "soho + admin password". Make sure you are not using any special characters.
You could do a reset from the back of the device. This is not data destructive, but it will reset user and network settings so you will have to set the device up again, rejoin the domain and import the AD users and groups.
Are there any other admin users you could try logging in under?

  • MDT 2010 Vista cannot finish after joining domain

    Hi,
I have a problem with deployment process after joining domain. I am deploying Vista using MDT 2010 with LiteTouch.  Everything works fine. However, deployment process stops after joining domain. I suppose that autologon is disabled/don't work after joining domain and all following steps can't be started.
What is wrong with my configuration or Task Sequence?
    Thanks in advance, Jan.

    Hi Jan,
    Thank you for your post.
As you said that the deployment process stopped after joining domain, may I know if there is any error received? If so, please let me know the details.
Meanwhile, I would like to share the following with you:

  • Domain Users are allowed by default to join domain

    Hi everyone !
Recently i install Windows Server 2012 Standard
    Configure Active Directory Domain Services
    Create simple user "test1"
then i go to windows 7 client and join domain with this "test1" user.
and i shocked how is it possible that a simple domain user which is not a part of any domain admin or admin group and can join or rejoin domain successfully.
Help me to get out of this how can i restrict simple domain user to join domain and why it was by default ?

    > then i go to windows 7 client and join domain with this "test1" user.
By default, EVERY user can join up to 10 clients to the domain.
    > and i shocked how is it possible that a simple domain user which is not
Why shocked? What's the issue when users join computers to the domain?
    > Help me to get out of this how can i restrict simple domain user to join
    > domain and why it was by default ?
Create a GPO, link it to the domain, move it up to above "Default Domain
Policy" and configure Computer - Policies - Windows Settings - Security
Settings - Local Settings - User Rights Assignment: Add Workstations to
    the domain.

  • .mac personal domain hosting

New user to .MAC and iLife '08
I've read all the posts about personal domain hosting on .mac, performed all the DNS changes with CNAME at GoDaddy and performed all the steps to add the domain at .Mac. Im still not getting the site to load/sync (instead I get the default page).
I have two .Mac accounts and wonder if this is confusing the sync.
I created the site synced it with my .mac account. It still appears as if under web.mac.com/mydomain/home.html
Since I followed the described proceedures in all the posts Im not sure where the disconnect is. Can anyone help me get my personal domain files to sync.

Could you start by providing your .Mac and your Godaddy urls? Also how long have you been waiting?

  • Domain hosting provider that supports Dynamic Global Hostname?

Is there any domain hosting provider that supports dynamic DNS of the variety that supports "dynamic global hostname" used by Mac OS X, accessed in the Sharing control panel, and used by AirPort Express and Time Machine? I am referring to the Dynamic DNS method specified by IETF RFC 2136.

Any VPS provider will give you full control over your BIND installation.
