Join hard drives together ?
i wanted to ask a question about my hard drive and itunes and i wonder if this is the right forum.
my itunes music folder has become very large and does not fit into my 60 GB hard drive. Now i have a 120 Gb hard drive in my office computer. Can i join both 60 and 120 gb hard drives together to make a single 180 gb hard drive without a partition where i can put my itunes music folder location.

You can create a RAID but that would require losing all the data on both drives. A far easier solution is to simply copy your /Home/Music/ folder to the other hard drive. Delete the original then create an alias in the same location to the new location. To create the alias select the Music folder that is now on your new drive, CTRL-click to open the Contextual Menu and select Make Alias. You will now have a folder icon with a curved arrow in the bottom left corner named "Music alias." Now copy the alias to your /Home/ folder. Rename the alias to Music (remove the "alias" in the name.)

When i am logging/ Capturing my mac is telling me that i am getting dropped frames. would i need to get a LaCie Hard Drive?
To be honest, I've had 2 Lacie drives crash out of 2 bought. That's not a good track record for me.
Your best bet (I'm a computer professional, for what it's worth):
Get a hard drive case or enclosure that supports firewire 800 and put your own PC hard drive (SATA for example) 7200rpm or higher hard drive into it.
Let me explain a bit more. External hard drive manufacturers often put no-name hard drives into fancy cases to cut costs and that's how they make a profit. I've have had nothing but problems with with these types of drives. (Like Lacie) You are much better off getting some type of decent drive enclosure and getting your own GOOD hard drive. I would highly recommend Seagate, I have NEVER had a problem with a Seagate drive in 20 years of owning PCs and Macs. Western Digital is also a good brand (though I had 1 crash). These are the types of drives you would put in your Mac Pro. You want to get an SATA hard drive.
I have owned several external cases where the case electronics fried, but the hard drives were still in good shape. Take the hard drive out, put it into a new case you're good to go!
For video you want to make sure that your hard drive case supports Firewire 800! This is mandatory.
My personal favorite, (and I own 5 of these) is Vantec's NexStar hard drive enclosure. They accept any SATA 3.5" drive (I bought mine from a company called ComputerStop). I have yet to have a single problem with any of them. They are solid aluminum casing, you can literally throw them into your backback, drop them on the floor and your hard drive is fairly well protected from impact damage (at least you won't break the case with anything short of a sledgehammer). I am currently looking at getting a second one of these:

As far as the hard drive, you can get a Seagate Baracuda drive 1TB at 7200rpm drive for about $60. The case and hard drive together, maybe a few over $100 for the whole thing. With shipping, and tax figure about $150.
Don't let the price fool you. It will rock.
Story: I got an iOmega "raid" case with two Seagate drives in it and the iOemga case fried, but the hard drives were still good. Fortunately, they were in two removable trays. I put them into two "rocketfish" hard drive cases almost 3 years ago and I am still using them every day today.
Moral of this story: It's the quality of the hard drive that matters, not what case it's in.
Is it hard to set up?
Not at all. You put the hard drive into a tray, (with Vantec case), screw it in. It only goes in 1 way. Plug in a power cable to the drive. Slide the tray into the case (carefully, don't munch the power cable!) and screw it in place. You can literally do it in 10 minutes or less. There are, of course instructions, but if you are reasonably clever, you can literally see what plugs into what just by looking at it.
Sorry for the long reply, but I have a lot of experience with external drives and I hope this helps others.
Finally, when you make it to the big time you can spend $400, get yourself a firewire RAID enclosure and you can upgrade to 4 external hard drives in 1 enclosure. Figure $800 for that set up, but you can go up to 12 TB of drive space with that, or up to 3TB if you are running redundant discs. But that's a whole other ballgame...

I do lots of dv video work using a sony pd170 dv/dvcam video camera. i have the mac mini using final cut express 4. for small videos the system works fine, small project 10 mins or less. I am currently working on a very large project 90 to 120 mins. My mac mini has slowed down alot and im left with 30 gig on the hard drive and im just under half way completed. i have been looking at newertech mini stack 2 or 3 500 gig or greater hard drive the specs read usb cable with mac 10.4 or higher but im most likley reading it wrong. can i hook up both the mini and hard drive together using a fire wire and if so can i load my footage through the hard drive port fire wire port while they are hooked up together.
Now question #2 is the hard drive just for storage or for use?
any info would be great jim k.The Newertech ministack has both USB and firewire, so for your use you would ideally connect it with a standard 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. Given your work, I would also suggest the largest drive you can afford, particularly since video takes up a lot os space - around 12Gb/hour.
If you are asking whether you can then daisy-chain your camcorder, and spool video front that, through the drive to your mini, the answer is that you should be able to, though some camcorder/drive combinations create problems. I've used both Sony TRV-70 and Panasonic GS500 camcorders daisy chained through my Metal Gear Box FW enclosures to my G5, a mini and my powerbook at various times and had no issues, but some users have reported problems with dropped frames or lost connections - particularly if spooling through the external drive which is also being used to store the files.
Now question #2 is the hard drive just for storage or for use?
It isn't really clear what you mean by this! The external drive can be used for anything the internal can - even booting the system up if it's set up correctly and you install a copy of MacOS on it! It can also be used to backup the internal drive, for saving files, for keeping your music library, for storing photos, for putting applications etc. -
How do i brig two external hard drives??
I was told you could brig two external hard drives together. i tried to do so but as soon as i connect them to my computer they shut off, does any one know if it can actually be done, if it can how do you do it? i have two Western Digital ( my books).
By "bridge" do you mean just connecting two external hard drives to a computer or do you mean a "RAID" system where they operate as one drive with enough info to rebuild the files if one drive fails?
If you have two unused USB ports on your computer you should be able to connect each drive to a port.

Can someone give me some advice on a two hard drive configuration that could be hot swappable.

I’m not really sure how to get those source files back and get rid of the extra long path to where the source files are now located. If I re-link files to their current catalog (many different paths to files in same catalog) can I merge (import catalogs) into one master catalog? Will the new (Master catalog) have the correct link to the source file? If not, how or can this be done?

Why has iTunes seperated a album into indevidual songs, which I have copied over from my external hard drive into iTunes? How can you pull all the songs back together into one album again?

Quick answer: Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields. If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty. -

Hi, not sure what you mean by link them together!
You could RAID them int one bigger drive, (JBOD), or RAID0 them for twice the speed, or RAID1 them for automatic mirroring backup, but that requires erasing both drives & losing everything on them now.
There are other ways like moving iPhoto, iTunes, etc. to the second drive to make more space on the boot drive. -

Yes I did get to that part.... I went trough external to retrive itunes folder... When I selected the folder, it said that it was locked, choose another folder... I then went to my external again to my itunes folder and and used command I to see if folder was locked and it wasn't.... it was suggested on another forum to reboot.. which I did and still same problem... All I want to do is link my external hard drive that has my itunes playlist from another Mac to my new one.. and to also use the external as the main source for adding new songs to my playlist...

I have to transfer all of my events in iPhoto to an external hard drive. When I export an event from iPhoto to the hard drive, it copies each picture but does not keep them in a named event folder. I have over 14,000 pics in 600+ events to transfer and want to avoid doing it one event at a time. Any suggestions?
Thanks!IPhoto can't do anything with any photo that hasn't been imported into its library. Its default behavior when you import a picture is to duplicate the picture in the iPhoto Library "package" file inside ~/Pictures. This leaves the original picture wherever it was, and it can be deleted, as it is now just taking up space. Everything you do with the picture within iPhoto from now on is recorded and saved inside the iPhoto Library "package".
When iPhoto is used in that default mode, you have what is called a "managed Library". The alternative is a "referenced Library". Photos in a referenced Library can be stored anywhere that is accessible to your computer: anywhere on your internal drive or on any number of external drives, flash drives, network drives, etc., etc. IPhoto will keep track of all those original files, and whatever organization, alterations or metadata you create for them in iPhoto will be recorded in iPhoto's Library without altering the originals in their various storage locations. BUT--and this is a BIG but--if you THEN move, rename, modify, delete or reorganize any of those originals in the Finder or using other photo editing tools, iPhoto will lose track of them, and whatever you've done with them from within iPhoto will be lost. Backing up a referenced library that is stored on more than one drive is a nightmare, and restoring one from a backup is even worse. So I strongly recommend sticking wit a managed library if you intend to use iPhoto at all.
A managed library can be stored anywhere. The default location for it is in ~/Pictures on your startup drive, but you can have one there and another on an external drive if you like, or you can just have one on the external drive and none on the startup disk -- as long as the external drive is always available when you open iPhoto. If you open the application and the external drive can't be found, iPhoto will create a new iPhoto Library in the default location and will assume that's the one you want to use, until you tell it differently.
To direct iPhoto to use a particular library, hold down the Option key while clicking iPhoto in the Dock to open it. You'll be prompted to locate and select whatever library you want iPhoto to open, wherever it may reside.
I have nine iPhoto Libraries on my internal hard drive containing over 100,000 pictures in all. Each library contains pictures that have nothing to do with the pictures in any of the other libraries. I never want to be able to see the pictures in more than one of the libraries at once -- if I did, I wouldn't have separated them. Any of the libraries could be moved to another drive if I needed more space on this one, but so far I've got enough space to store them all together. That makes backing up simpler. -
When I'm travelling I import photos onto my laptop's external hard drive and work on the images using virtual copies to develop them. When I get home, I want to import all the photos together with the developed virtual copies fromt the laptop's external HD into LR5 on my PC desktop. But if I use the import button in LR I only get the original photo, not the developed copies. What am I doing wrong?
Since your current editing workflow is based around Virtual Copies there are no actual files containing the edit data. Therefore, you'll need to use the 'Import from another catalog' option ( see File menu).

Can I use my Mac & Centro together in a external hard drive way not a sync way?
I want to edit my call log. I need to delete a lot of numbers in the log, but keep some selected older ones. I can only seem to find a "delete all calls older than.." or delete call by call which is too time consuming.
Is there a way I can hook up to my Mac to delete or copy my call log?
Or is there a way to select many calls and just delete those that I have selected on my Centro? When I sync, I see no way to even get at my call log.
The same question applies to text messages. Can I delete parts of a text group? For example, I want to keep an answer, but I do not need to keep the question. I made the mistake of saying yes to a delete this message and lost all the responses in that group.
Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)I am not sure what you are talking about on the external hard drive, but there is not way to edit your call log or SMS messages on a PC you are syncing to on either a Windows or a MAC.

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.
