Joined Network but Self-Assigned IP from ethernet.

I am trying to use my previous generation Airport Extreme to act as a wireless switch for my PS3 that can't seem to find my network up in my room. I managed to get the airport to join the netowork of my Netgear WNDR3400. Connecting through wifi is fine and I can manage the airport when connect to said wifi. It is when I try to connect through ethernet that I get a self Assigned IP using DHCP and Airport Utility can't find the AEBS. I have tried manual address using DHCP and manually configuring both the Airport and the Wifi connection on my MacBook Pro to make sure it works before connecting to the PS3, but as of yet I have had no luck getting any kind of inernet connection through ethernet.
If I'm posting on here it means I've spent several hours trouble shooting with no luck . Thanks for any help.

The AEBS can "join" a wireless network......but....the Ethernet ports are not enabled when it is configured this way. Same for the Time Capsule. So, about all that you can do is connect a device to the USB port when the device is configured this way.
Ironically, the AirPort Express can "join" a wireless network, and the Ethernet port is enabled. That is because of a special, undocumented feature on the Express called ProxySTA....which is not included on the AEBS or TC.

  • Self Assigned IP from my macbook pro to xbox through ethernet...

I live in a college dorm and i have been using internet sharing through an ethernet cable to connect to xbox live and it has been working fine for months now, but has now recently decided to make everything difficult and it continuously just says self assigned IP address cannot connect to internet. Every video and forum I have tried reading generally refers back to something involving the router however in this case my wifi is working no problem its just the ethernet cable going to my xbox that has the self assigned IP problem. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

It isn't clear what you are trying to do.  Why are you connected to the Xbox?  Is the Xbox suppose to share the internet through your mac?
Since there is so little information, I'm going to go through a lot of stuff you might already know.
You have two network interfaces on your Mac.  en0 which is the cable and en1 which is the wireless.
IP addresses are assigned through a process called DHCP.  When you have a self-assigned address there is no DHCP server.
The DHCP server -may- be on a router or it may be on several different devices such as a Unix computer (or Linux) specifically set up to provide DHCP addresses.  Since you are in a dorm, is is quite likely a specifically configured host is providing DHCP.
Your wireless network will get a different DHCP address than your wired network.  For example, 128.1.0.0/16 might be the network assigned to the wireless to support 253x253 different hosts (a lot of hosts and the main reason to keep DHCP off of the router).  And something like 129.1.0.0/16 would be assigned to the wired network.
The DHCP server for the wireless network WILL NOT provide an address for en0.
NOTE: I have never used Apple's Internet Sharing and I -assume- that when you share that the Mac acts like a bridge.
I also assume that this is what you are attempting to do with your Xbox.  This would mean that the Xbox would have to initiate a DHCP request for an address that is forwarded (bridged) through the Mac to the DHCP server.  This request includes the Xbox hardware address.  Now comes the part that is going to make you cry.  MAC addresses are 48 bits and look like AB:CD:EF:12:34:56.  The first 24-bits are assigned to a manufacturer and used for specific products.  When the DHCP request gets to the DHCP server, it knows that the request is from an Xbox.  Your campus may have decided that you've been playing too many games and does not respond with an IP address for the Xbox.
You can check this out by using a tool called tcpdump or you can install Wireshark.  If you want to go down this rabbit hole, it is going to require quite a bit of time and you'll end up becoming quite well educated in how networking works.  People go to school for years to understand this.  :-)
Or, maybe you just forgot to ensure internet sharing was on.
If you have some other kind of wiring setup then perhaps you have a different problem.
BTW, when you plug the ethernet cable from the Xbox into the mac that "activates" it.
By default OSX is configured to use DHCP to provide an address.
If the Mac sends out DHCP requests over the ethernet cable and never gets a response it will then self-assign an address.
A self-assigned address cannot be used to get to the internet.
(But, I understand that it your Xbox that isn't working not the Mac, especially since you were able to post your question here.)

  • Express/Extreme Can Join Network but Cannot Extend

I have both an Airport Extreme and an Aiport Express.  Recently we have upgraded to UVerse and acquired a new modem/wireless router.  I like the interface for this new router and would like to use it.  In turn, I would like to use both my Extreme/Express to extend my current wireless network.  In the past, I just ran my modem to the Extreme and then extended, upstairs, using my Express.
Both have no issues joining the current wireless network, but when attempt to extend the wireless network, they both just drop to blinking yellow lights and do nothing else.  Sometimes I connect via an ip address and see that the issues with extending comes from the fact that it cannot see the wireless network, which makes no sense to me since I have already joined the wireless network multiple times.
From here I simply have to factory reset each and start over, trying new settings.  My frustration has come to a head as I can find plenty of threads that have issues with extending networks from an Express, but nothing like mine.
My new UVerse modem is a 3801HGV from Pace?
    My security is WPA2 TKIP/AES.
I have no interest is hooking my Extreme up to the UVerse router via ethernet, I would much rather have it upstairs with the Express, extending, so I can have some true full home coverage with my network.
    Thanks for reading

You might consider connecting one AirPort to the Uverse router using a short Ethernet cable and setting that AirPort up to "create a wireless network".
Then, the next AirPort can extend that network.
Apple's routers.....and many others for that matter....will run circles around the wireless on a Uverse router, so if performance is important to you, you might consider turning off the wireless on the Uverse router and using other products to provide the  wireless service.
If you want to "extend" the Uverse signal with another product......a Netgear "universal" extender might do the job.....(although the models that I have tried are not "universal" enough to extend an Apple network).
Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy any product, as compatibility between different brands is always a huge question that often can't be answered until you try it our for yourself.
    Good luck.

  • HP Photosmart 7515 says it is connected to wireless network but won't print from anywhere.

My HP photosmart 7515 used to work on my network.  I could print from iphones and my mac mini.  Now it says its connected, it has the IP address 10.0.1.3 and everything on the HP network configuration page says it is functioning normally, but the printer can't be reached by any device and I can't open it in my browser when I type the IP address into it.  I've tried powering it down and unplugging it but at this point I am at a loss.  The only thing I can think of is that I ran a Mackeeper fast cleanup of extraneous files recently and perhaps something was removed that needed to stay.  I don't know.  I tried installing the HP utility for Mavericks (my current operating system on the Mini) but that can't find the printer. I tried typing in the IP address manually but that didn't work either.
When I try to connect to it through eprint it says that it is connected but says there is a problem with the printer.  What's the problem?  It says it is unspecified and to see printer front panel for information on resolving the issue. Where on the front panel?  I have no idea.
Happy to start from the beginning but this is really becoming a pain.  Why doesn't it work?
    Help!  David

FIrst of all, get rid of Mackeeper, it will cause more problems that it will solve.  To uninstall it, open it and have it uninstall itself, then restart your Mac.
Have you restarted your router?  What router are you using?

  • ATV joins network but can't negotiate internet connection?

Hi, I've just upgraded to 10.6 and also switched my airport network to 'n' only. All worked a dream except for my ATV. It connects to the wireless network but can't obtain a router address or dns address so has no internet connection?? The ATV has been working beautifully over a B/G network for months so I don't know if it's the move to n or the move to 10.6 or both.
Any advice available on this? I can't seem to find the issue discussed on the forum already.

    Try restarting the DHCP server.
Now that you've updated to SL have you tried putting your network settings back to your b/g setting to try to isolate the problem.
You didn't turn off bridging when you set your router to n only did you.
Is your router set to n only or b/g/n or g/n

  • Issue with Mini getting Self Assigned IP from recently purchased AEBS

I'm having a strange issue with the Airport Extreme Base Station I got got today. It can connect to the internet fine but it appears not to be assigning a network ID to my Mini. I can manually assign the proper IP Address & Subnet Mask settings but using "Using DCHP" yields an IP address of 169.254.x.x, a Subnet Mask of 255.255.0.0, and a nonfunctional internet connection. The situation occurs using both Ethernet & AirPort. My Vonage router seems to operate fine so I know the router is working otherwise.

Can you open the Airport Utility, and open the internet connection pane.
    Yes
Make sure the connection sharing is set to: share a public IP address (this will turn on both NAT and DHCP on the AEBS)
    Did that, no effect
This way, when the Mac is set to "Using DCHP", the IP address should be assigned to the Mac automatically.
    Did that, no effect
But make sure you turn OFF the DHCP on the Vonage Router, there can only be one DHCP on a subnet.
Still trying to figure out how to do that on the Vonage router but I should point out when I powered down & completely removed the Vonage router and reset every other device on the network it made no impact.

  • Error joining network - but other computers have no problem

I've been frustrated by one of three computers in my house having an issue joining my wireless access by Airport (via Westell VersaLink issued by dsl provider) .
My MacBook Pro won't connect to the network, telling me, after I enter the WEP password: << There was an error joining the network "X". >>
The other two computers I use at home, my wife's PC laptop and an old iMac, connect flawlessly with same password. The MacBook had connected fine previously. One day (6 months ago?) it just started with the issue and hasn't connected since.
The MacBook travels with me a lot and has no similar connectivity issues in other locations.
After I enter the correct password, it takes about ten seconds to report the error. If I enter the incorrect password, it tells me virtually instantly the same message as above.

Can you check the IP address of your Linux machine? Is it still in range with the other devices? Before you installed chromecast, have you assigned a static IP on your Linux server? Please do further checking with the settings of your Linux server. There are some reports that upon installing chromecast, some settings on *nix based machines are changed without any notification or interaction from the user.

  • TC joined network, but computer can't connect with TC

Easily got the TC up and running, successfully joined my existing wireless network- a solid green light. But when I tried to activate Time Machine, I keep getting the message "Connection failed- The server "xxxx" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time."
I waited a while, tried again. Same thing. Then I unplugged the TC, rebooted, and restored the factory settings on the TC. Again, successfully rejoined my wireless network. But got the same message.
I'd appreciate any thoughts....thank you very much

The Time Capsule performs no routing functions at all when it is configured to "join a wireless network". Therefore, the ethernet ports are not enabled.
In effect, when configured to "join", the Time Capsule simply becomes a wireless backup device and nothing more.
You might want to restart the entire network to see if the Time Capsule becomes available. You should be able to open the Finder and see the Time Capsule under the SHARED heading if it is successfully joining the network.

  • How to troubleshoot Self-assigned IP for ethernet

i have tried restarting my modem, and releasing the renewing DHCP lease with no luck. My wireless works, but not my ethernet.

How does your system normally get its IP address? Via DHCP from a router of some sort or from your Internet provider? If so, then your Mac is no longer picking up an address and folks here will need more information, particularly about how you connect your system to the network, to be able to offer much in way of information.

  • Envy5532 - both PC and printer connect to WiFi router/network, but can't print from PC : (

I have a new Envy 5532 and I want to print from my Windows 7 Pro PC via my wireless network/internet router.
The PC is connected wirelessly to the internet through the router. The printer connects to the router/network without any problem. The printer also connects DIRECTLY to the PC wirelessly, and I can print from the PC if I disconnect from the router/WiFi network.
So the router comes up as a network on the PC, and the printer comes up as a different network. But I can only print through the direct connection, which means I can only print, not scan. Also, it means I have to disconnect from the internet in order to print.
I have run all diagnostics, installed the drivers, etc. but it seems to be a dead end.
    Any advise? Many thanks.

    Hi @DrivenDementet,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you cannot print from your PC to your HP Envy 5532. I am happy to help you with your printing!
    Please see the following guides:
'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Windows 7. (This guide will help you get online and printing).
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. (This guide will help you maintain the connection).
On top of the guides, I would also recommend this website, HP Wireless Printing Center, as there is some good information on wireless printing.
it is also very important with wireless printing that the PC and the Printer are on the same wireless network, otherwise they will not be able to talk to each other.
Hope this information clears things up for you, and have a great day!

  • Time machine w wi-fi won't connect to Wi-Fi network, but does connect via Ethernet.

Since downloading latest airport firmware, have been having some problems keeping my network operating (Hughest Satellite modem with Airport Extreme and Airport Time Capsule). Well, in the process of resetting the Airport Extreme for the 8th time in about 2 weeks, I made a mistake, and accidentally told Airport Utility to forget the Time Capsule that serves to extend the Wi-Fi network.
Then I couldn't get the network to remember it. So reset in order to reconfigure.
I think that I reset it correctly -- hold down the reset button for 5 seconds or more, unplug, wait 10 seconds or more, then plug it in, holding reset down until yellow light blinks.
Tried reconfiguring it via wi-fi, and it just wouldn't complete.
Plugged Time Capsule directly into the internet, and it did reconfigure and join network.
But it still refuses to resume its old role as a network repeater. When unplugged from ethernet, goes into yellow blinking mode and stays there (for hours).

Solved at last! Really struggled over this issue and looked at a number of discussions.  Eventually found a line of inquiry that was fruitful.  After numerous resets and creating a couple of new networks that didn't work, made a clean one, and used SysPrefs>Network>Advanced>Diagnostics. Working through the program provided the option to change from ethernet to wireless.  Suddenly everything started to work together.  I had tried it earlier when the TC was down and not on the internet, and it didn't work, but once all the individual parts of the Network were running, the switch to wi-fi worked.  Still don't really understand why, but I'm grateful for the continuing help and insight the communities provide.

  • Self-assigned IP, no internet connection status with FIOS?

a friend just had FIOS installed at her house and after it was set up she was able to connect to the internet. i came over later in the day to join her airport express to this WiFi network by using airport  utility (she wanted to have her printer available on the network). after i tried setting it up using her macbook (it failed because the WEP key used by verizon is 64 bit and apple only supports 128 bit) and rejoined the FIOS router network we lost the internet connection. in network preferences it showed a self--assigned IP address but no internet connection status. i've tried deleting this network from the joined network list, deleted the password from keychain and then rejoining the network, putting in the password when prompted. still the same "no internet connection" status. any ideas?
    thanks!

Eh la Pastenague! Je savais que tu était léthale pour l'homme mais ce sont pluôt les machines à pommes qui devraient te craindre. Merci! Solved.
    For future reference.
My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
    1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
    2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
    I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.
    Thanks a lot
PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration

  • 'Hidden' network -but it's not!!

My airport base station is set to create a hidden network, but my lap top from the office (Dell windows ;-( !) What am I doing wrong?

Has the Dell ever been connected to the network before?
Hiding your network (not broadcasting the SSID) doesn't actually add any security, as you have discovered, some newer adapters can "see" hidden networks.
It use to be useful, but closing your Airport or wireless network (sometimes referred to as not broadcasting your SSID) is really no longer a real option when it comes to wireless security.
Unfortunately "Closed" networks, MAC access control lists, and reduction in transmission power are all more "feel good" security rather than real security. All these various approaches are dated and mistakenly lead to overconfidence.
WPA is your friend if you value wireless security.
My recommendation is not to worry about broadcasting your SSID but use WPA. This will be more secure than a closed WEP encrypted network. Closing your network makes it very difficult for neighbouring networks to see which channels are free thus causing potential interference problems.
Another thing to consider is that a closed network is still broadcasting and therefore is detectable (regardless of whether it is broadcasting a SSID). If someone was determined to hack into your network, then not broadcasting your SSID and MAC address access control is not going to stop them.
WPA is virtually uncrackable (only really vunerable to a dictionary attack if a real word is used as a password) and therefore will stop the casual user and the determined hacker.

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.
