Joining Clips

How do I join two clips in the upper window? I can't figure out how to use Edit->Join Clips.

Brad,
Welcome to the Discussions.
If I'm not mistaken, the Join Clips command can only be used to join clips back together that you've split apart.

  • How do I join clips in iMovie, the join clip in the edit menu is never available?

I am desperately trying to edit some footage and I have split the clips and then added the footage I want inbetween the split, however I cannot join them back together as the joinclip in the edit menu is never highlighted, am stuck on what to do now, anyone help please?

The Join Clip command is meant to restore a clip that you split and then decide you want to "undo" the split.
It's really not particularly useful or necessary for editing.
The clips you use in your Project will all be effectively joined together when you export (Share) your finished project.
As you're editing your Project it appears as a bunch of separate clips but the finished project will playback as a seamless whole.

  • Editing & joining clips

    Hi all,
    just wanna check
I'm got some clips that I want to join that together as well removing some part of it to form a very large content of it.
    is this possible with imovie?

    first:
yes you import footage as clips and the clips create "events". You then use the "events' to create projects. This is basically what you are doing...you are assembling ie joining clips into a project and then exporting/sharing the final project.
    A few things:
How large? There are time limits for burning to a DVD.
How are you sharing the project?
What are the specs of the footage you are bringing in to imovie?
The question is not an issue of editing and joining...thats the easy part.

  • Split/join clips?

iMovie 08, under Edit, has two choices: split clip and join clip. But nowhere in the Help file, that I could find, does it explain what these do, nor how to use them.
    Could someone explain.
    Thanks,
    Hal

If you have part of a clip selected, you can break that clip into pieces using Split clip. So, if you have a section in the middle of a clip selected, it will create three clips. One clip for the part of the clip before your selection, one for the actual video segment you selected, and one for the part of the clip following your selection.
Join clip will reunite clips that have been split this way, assuming they haven't been deleted.

  • Erratic Behavior When Trying to Join Clips

I'm using Soundtrack 1.5 and getting stuck on what should be one of the most simple tasks -- splitting and joining clips. Splitting is not an issue, but after I split a clip (using keyboard command 'S' or the razor tool, or keyboard command b), when I move the pieces around and try to join them again, sometimes they come back together, and sometimes they don't. I can't see why this shouldn't work every time.
Can someone shed some light on this frustrating and productivity-busting problem?
    Thanks.

Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings, then try joining again and you should get the password prompt.

  • Renaming and Joining Clips

The instructions in iMovie Help clearly state it is possible rename clips in the Clips Pane, not just the Clip Viewer. In iMovie 3.0.3 which I am using, it lets me rename them in the Clip Viewer just fine by selecting and retyping the name. Once in the Clips Pane, though, I have tried both this and double-clicking and retyping. The new title appears but iMovie won't save the change!
Also, I've been trying to lock together a group of clips by selecting them all, creating a blank title under "Centered Multiple" of the same length, and applying it to the entire selection. Other people say this works fine for them, but when I try it, if it's in Timeline view it shows a circle with a line through it, then applies the title only to the first clip. If in Clips View, it deselects the rest of the clips and applies the title only to the first clip. I'd like to be able to
    1. Move the entire selection, anywhere I want in the timeline once it's edited the way I want, without having to keep each individual clip in order (the only way I've found is by selecting them all but it would be nice if there were a better way) and
    2. If I CAN'T lock, fuse, or otherwise join the clips together, AT LEAST be able to rename them so I am SURE they remain in the proper order when moved!
I think perhaps some setting is wrong, not allowing me to do what has worked for others, but can't figure out what it might be. Anyone have a clue? Thanks for any help or assistance.

It may bear repeating, I'm using iMovie 3.0.3. (I know, I'm probably posting in the wrong forum, but this one is so much better-trafficed and I do want people to see my posts!) This is what it says in iMovie Help 3.0.3:
"My effect stopped rendering before it was finished
If your effect stopped rendering before it was finished, you may have clicked in a text field during the rendering process. To resume rendering, click outside the text field."
(I swear, to my knowledge, I didn't click on anything once the red line started across! It deselected the remaining clips by itself!)
    "About rendering
The process of creating new elements (such as titles, effects, or transitions) in a movie is called "rendering." It happens any time video is modified, such as when you create a transition between scenes or add title text over video.

You can continue editing your movie while your change is rendered. Rendering takes a few seconds or minutes to complete."
Okay, this is what it says in iMovie 6.0 Help:
    "About rendering
The process of creating new elements (such as transitions, titles, or effects) in a movie is called "rendering." Rendering happens any time a video clip is modified, such as when you add a dissolve between scenes or scroll text over video. During the rendering process, iMovie HD makes the appropriate changes to each frame in a clip. As iMovie HD renders a clip, you'll see a small red line progress along the bottom of the clip.
If you apply effects or transitions to more than one selected clip, iMovie HD renders all the clips at once, which can save you a lot of work. You can continue editing your movie while your change is rendered. Rendering takes from a few seconds to a few minutes to complete."
Notice the difference? iMovie 6.0 specifically talks about applying effects or transitions to more than one selected clip. iMovie 3.0.3 never mentions it. Is this an inadvertant omission corrected later, or could I be trying to do something which is actually not allowed in iMovie 3.0.3?
As for renaming clips, I still have not the slightest clue as to why there would be a difference between the Clips Pane and Clips Viewer and why it works in one place and not the other! I don't think it's that you're allowed to rename a clip only once, as one of the clips still has a name iMovie made, so I obviously didn't rename it.

  • Joining Clips or Spanning Transitions

I'm about to finish up my movie project and I want the last couple of seconds to fade to black over the course of several different clips. The video fx window give me an error telling me the "fade to black" transition can only be as long as the final clip. There are two ways I can think of solving this: join or combine all the final clips into a single clip, or find a way to tell the transition to span over multiple clips.
Does anyone know whether it is possible to join several clips into a single clip, or cause a transition to span over several clips?

    Bengt,
I finally grasped what you were saying. You can merge several short clips into one by placing your cursor at the begining of the first one and then adding a textless (blank) title that is equal in duration to the sum of the clips. When the title is added, all the clips will merge. Rolling Credits works great for this because of the long duration that can be set with that title. Scrolling Block, too. Pretty cool. I just didn't pick up on the technique of not putting any text in the selected title. I thought I knew this program pretty well, but I never thought of that. Very ingenious. Thanks.

  • Why can't I join clips?

I split my clip in order to change the cropping from one to the next.  Now I want to undo this and join the clips again but the option is grayed out in the menu.

I am not totally sure you have answered my question. I understand d/ling Squared 5, but what format do the files need to be in order for me to edit them in to a movie? Any ideas of why they won't work as a .mov?
I downloaded Squared 5, converted to a .mpeg and the same thing happens. I drag and drop, the importing box flashes for a split second, then nothing happens. No media appears in the box. This is really frustrating, considering it should be an easy to use apple product. Is there another program I should be considering?

  • Can't Join Clips

I have a long clip from a voice over session with pauses that need to be removed. I use the blade or split function and shift-delete the pauses. Then I select adjacent clips, on either side of each cut and try to join them but no joy as the mighty join is greyed out. The only circumstance where join seems to work is when I split or blade a clip and then immediately join it again, as in no time code abridgements and nothing accomplished. The documentation seems to acknowledge this shortcoming by suggesting that one apply time stretch to clips before cutting them instead of trying to apply time stretch to multiple pieces of the same file. However, if you are timing voice over to a finished animation, it's much easier to make time stretch the final step.
Is join just a replacement for a command-Z when you make a cut in the wrong place or am I missing something?

You shouldn't use the Join-function. Just slide a slice to where you want it. When the in- & outpoints of a clip overlap, STP automatically creates a volume crossfade. (when in Preferences > Project > Overlap is set to Crossfade). But even when you leave gaps, there's no problem:
The result should be exported, the newly created file will have a new continuous timecode. The 'Join-function' is only possible on files with succeeding timecode. When you cut out parts and move them on the timeline, their timecode is changed. So they can't be joined.
Timestretching is something completely different, and shouldn't be used here. With this function you can change the length of a piece of audio. It can only be done per clip, not on a selection of clips. But I don't think you want to use this, as you only want to cut out time.

  • Hi, I am trying to join two clips after splitting one clip to edit 'ums' and 'ahs' in a sentence.

    Hi,
I am having trouble joining clips in iMovie. Every time I try the 'join clip' choice under 'edit' is grayed out. I would like to join two clips from time to time -- not necessarily two clips that were once one and then split. Just two clips. Maybe I did not want the material in between.
This time, I did select a section of a clip during an interview to take out 'ah, ah, ah... um' and deleted that section. And in doing so I created two clips. Now I'd like to rejoin them for a seamless sentence with out the jumping from one clip to the next. But 'join clip' is grayed out.
    Thanks.

    Thank you.
But I wish I could join them before I share so I can make sure the transition is smooth. Right now it's obvious there's a 'jump' to the next clip, not smooth. I'd like to be able to splice and edit have it be seamless. Say, I want to add something a speaker says 5 minutes down the road to a sentence he says now, cutting and pasteing, and having it appear that he said it all at once. Right now it's obvious there was some cutting and pasteing. I was thinking joining the clips would smooth this out.

  • I want to join 3GPP clips together, will Quicktime Pro do that?

I have the Droid and I took some amazing videos at a concert. They are in great quality and I would like to join the clips together to make one longer video. I tried using iMovie, but it doesn't support 3GPP format. I tried converting the files to a format supported by iMovie, but the quality was extremely diminished. Now, I'm looking for software that supports 3GPP files and will let me join clips together. Does Quicktime Pro do this?

Try just changing files extensions to .mov, then edit in iMovie or Quicktime.

  • Merged clips in iMovie 6 HD

Currently I am working on creating an iMovie for my nephew's soccer tournament. It is being done in a Star Wars theme. In the original movie the Star Wars logo appears with the theme music and then zooms backward into infinity before the scrolling paragraphs. I have created the same type of effect, except it says Soccer Wars. I could not achieve this in iMovie using the titles because of the limitations. I did however create the title in photoshop 6 and import 3 size versions of this title. I need to create 3 because I discovered that the Ken burns effect would only zoom back just so far. I then used the sebsoft Join Clips plugin to tie all 3 clips together into one clip.
Here is my problem: When the first clip reaches zooms back to the point the second clip begins, there is a small "jump" or "jerk" between the first and second clip. The same happens between the second and third even though I have combined all three clips.
Here is my question: Is there a way to "smooth" this out so that it flows seemlessly?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Hi
To join clips - most often not necessary but in Your case most probably.
There are no join clip tool in iMovie but can be achieved in several ways
    1. I would test this first.
    • add together duration of clip 1 and 2 and 3 - Frame exact ! !
    • Now when they are in TimeLine and in a cont. select TEXT-tool
    • select any eg Centered Text, here apply the very invisably letter "Space"
    • now set the duration exactly
    • drop the text-tool line ge Centered Text on the first clip in TimeLine
Now they should be joined (whit an invisably space as text
    2. If this doesn't work - use Export Back to Camera
    • Export the clips back to a new tape
    • SET in iMovie pref - not to import as individual clips
    • import back
And it will be just one new clip
    3. This can as I get it also be done in QuickTime - But I do not know how
    You'll have to investigate.
Use the search function and You'll find more.

  • How do I upload all my clips in one video? iMovie 10.0.4

I've been trying to upload my gaming videos to youtube. There are more than one clip and i've edited some of them. I am fine until when I want to upload it to youtube, It only uploads the selected clip. When I deselect them all it tries to upload the first clip only. I've tried joining the clips but it won't let me, it just remains grey when i try to select join clips.

do you try to upload an Event (=no luck) or a Project (=only way to go)?

  • Fix chopped clips

I am new to iMovie and started to import quite some miniDV tapes (±80) from my Sony DCR-PC9E to the iMovie library. I am looking for a solution to join clips in (or back into) the event library.
    Background of my problem.
The tapes sometimes have some small hickups which do not really bother during playback from the camera, but after importing into iTunes each hickup will cause the clip to split and the few (1 to 4) hickup frames appear as a separate clip whith an incorrect date and time (they have the import date in stead of the recording date).
The ideal solution would be that iMovie is not chopping up my clips in case of a small hickup, but I have no idea of this can be forced. The alternative is that I 'fix' the clips after import for which I need to join all the hickup frames back into the clips again. I planned to add the clips and hickup clips to a project, but very short clips (1 or a few frames) cannot be added to a project for some reason.
    The resulting questions therefore are:
    1) Is it possible to prevent iMoview from chopping up frames during import in case of some short hickups in camera playback.
    2) Is it possible to glue clips together in the event library?
    3) As last resort, how can I add clips of only a few frames into a project? After which I may somehow generate a new output file which I import again in the event library.
Or maybe somebody has an alternative solution?

Oh!! Oh!! The media browser!! I tried that before, but it didn't make sense to me that it was in the media browser you referred the effect to. I usually use transitions and text effects. I did not know of these effects!! I think of them as overlays, but not enhancement effects as overlays like sharpening etc.
It did not help, the footage is too blurry. But thanks anyway! I learned something new!
