Joining line paths in CS5

Hi,
I am working on a line art project and trying to figure out how to join an endpoint on one path to another path. Here is pic of what I am trying to do:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/862/screenshot20111215at150.png/
Is there a way to join a line to the middle of another line and keep the line styles? Right now some of my paths end abruptly in a square end, but how do I joint them together? I tried using the "join" command, but that requires 2 endpoints.

Spinky,
It seems that in this case you may give the chin/cheek paths white fills and extend the troublesome paths, keeping them underneath the others; if that is not too cheeky.

  • Joining two paths... driving me crazy!

    Hi,
I'm using Illustrator CS3 and have had to draw a map of the UK to show our companies different sales regions. I have done this by drawing the individual regions (5) and once they are all aligned, they make a perfect UK map.
I now need to join the paths to create just the outline of the UK so I have cut the inner lines which divide up the regions so all I am left with are 5 paths that I need to join. I have selected two end points and pressed {cmd J} and it comes up with the following message:
"To join, you must select two open end points. If they are not on the same path, they cannot be on text paths nor inside graphs, and if both of them are grouped, they must be in the same group."
None of the paths are grouped. They were all drawn using the pen tool.
I have made sure that all ends aren't directional.
Can anyone help? I don't really want to have to re-draw the lines again!!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Rosie,
You might want to read about the Join scripts described on
this page. The .zip contains an AI Javascript that lets you join multiple open paths at once, without having to tediously select the end points. (It also works on directSelected subpaths of Compound Paths.)

  • Joining Line Segments in CS6

I am drawing a simple diamond shape made with one rectanlge shape and multiple line segments.  As I drew the design, I made sure to connect all the segments at the anchors.  When I select all of the segments and try to join the paths, the end points or corners are not smooth.  In other words, some of the line segment ends hang over the edges...  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks!
The image below shows the left side of the diamond, where the top portion meets the bottom...

Thank you, DayForce.  Changing the corner type to "round join" did the trick!  May I ask another question?  When I select all the segments and join the paths, I get an additional line segment from one point to another.  How can I elminiate this?

  • Simplifying Straight Line Paths

    Hey all,
new to the forum and really struggling with something at the moment, Using Illustrator CS4
I've imported a map from a DWG prepared in Archicad (vector based architecture software)
This map shows roads and buildings (they are paths in illustrator) and as you would imagine the roads are curved but rather than being drawn with curves they are composed of many many straight line paths and as I'm meaning to have a model laser cut from the Illustrator file I need to join these paths into longer paths so the laser cutting doesn't take forever.
As far as I can see it's fairly simple to simplify the number of anchor points on a curved path using the Object>Path>Simplify tool but simplifying multiple straight line paths that only have the slightest deviation in angle seems harder, or at least I can't work it out.
I have attached an image, The areas highlighted in green are examples of areas where there are too many paths and just one or two paths would be fine. It would be fine to either convert the paths to curved paths or just simply reduce the number of straight line paths that compose the curves.
Hope someone can help, Thx for your time

Apart from the current problem, you should take a look at the free plugin "Kartografie-Funktionen" if you do this kind of stuff regularly. http://www.ika.ethz.ch/plugins/index.html

  • Problem connecting two seperate straight line paths. Please help!

Hi there, I'm new to illustrator and have been having a problem connecting two straight line paths. They never seem to line up correctly. Attached is a photo of the problem. I assume this is an easy fix but I can't figure it out myself.

    Brigid,
There seems to be two aspects:
One is to get the end points to coincide. You may tick View>Snap Guides, then click one path by the end Anchor Point and drag it to snap (Smart Guides say anchor when you are there).
The other is to get rid of the gap in the stroke(s), You may join the paths into one, dragging across the coinciding Anchor Points with the Direct Selection Tool and Ctrl/Cmd+J, or you may keep the separate paths and change the Cap to Round in the Stroke palette/panel which will give you a rounded outer appearance); I presume the former is what you wish, in which case you may choose between Round and Miter Join.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes if join lines on different layers

Sent in a crash report earlier, but didn't realize the source of the error at the time -- which was that the two lines I was attempting to join were located in separate sublayers. Illustrator did not give me an error message when I attempted to join the lines, instead the lines I had joined simply vanished. If I then hit command Z to undo, the file would crash. This behavior was repeatable multiple times.
I realize this is a bug in an older version of the software, but having this info in the forums may be of use for people still running CS3, and, if this bug has not yet been corrected in more recent versions of the software, then I hope the tech folks will take notice.

    Peter, Steve -
That's interesting - and I was sure I'd isolated the source of the problem. I'm working in the mac OS (snow leopard) and CS3 suite is the Design Premium version. I had 3 sublayers in my layer, and each of those sublayers had about 20 paths in them. The behavior occurred repeatedly when I tried to join 2 lines that were in different sublayers (one of the endpoints was created by clipping a section out of an oval on one of the sublayers). I thought it was not a random behavior, b/c I reproduced it 4 or 5 times in a row, with 2 different pairs of lines. Yet I was able to join lines on any sublayer with no problem, and when I pulled all the lines out of the sublayers, I was able to join the two sets of lines that had previously been causing the crash without any difficulty. So I'm not sure why your tests did not reproduce the problem -- or why I had the problem in the first place.
    Thanks,
    Suzi

  • Lines/paths appear jagged?

When zoomed in or at 100% on a line drawn/path in CS5, it appears pixelated/jagged and not smooth. This happens when drawing paths with the pen tool, and the line tool. It happened with the line tool when I rotated the line at an angle.
How can I make it look smooth?
    Thanks.

Increase the thikness of the stroke to 2 pixels and set the edge softness to 100. That will give you some edge to blend with, making the stroke blend with the canvas/background. HTH

  • IF Statement in Join Line

Is it possible to use a IF statement (i.e. CASE, DECODE) in the Join Line?
I need create a query that depending on the value of a column it will determine if I use a column A or column B in my join statement. I was thinking something like the following:
    Select a.Value1, a.Value2, b.ColumnA, b.ColumnB
    FROM Table1 a
    INNER JOIN Table2 b ON a.Value2 = (if b.ColumnZ='Dept' then b.ColumnA else b.ColumnB END)
    Oracle Version 10g
    OS Windows XP
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Remember what a CASE expression does: it returns a single value in one of the SQL data types (such as VARCHAR2, NUMBER or DATE).
Each THEN (or ELSE) clause of a CASE expression references something that the CASE expression might return, so after each THEN (or ELSE) keyword there must be a single value in one of the SQL data types.
    So you can't say:
    case tdsi.level_code
         when  'L'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.location_code
         when  'R'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.region_code
         when  'C'  then  tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.country_code
endWhat is the data type being returned? "tdsid.privilege_code = tdlm.location_code" is not a single value in any of the SQL data types.
If location_code, region_code, country_code and privilege_code all have the same data type, then you can do something like this:
join      dirpipe.dirpipe_location_map      tdlm      on      case tdsi.level_code
                                            when 'L' then tdlm.location_code
                                            when 'R' then tdlm.region_code
                                            when 'C' then tdlm.country_code
                                       end     = tdsid.privilege_code

  • How do I create this line path/fade effect?

    Hi Guys,
I was just wondering- i saw this clip and am wanting to recreate it in a different colour / slightly different, but really though the styling was great.
I imagine it can't be too hard to accomplish in motion, but was unsure how to go about it.... i've made the swirl shapes in photoshop, but can't figure out the best way to 'reveal' the line (its not a simple line path really as the line changes shape/width/size)
    The video is here: http://www.worshiphousemedia.net/index.cfm?hndl=details&tab=MO&id=6610
    Many many thanks in advance,

this tutorial migth get you off in right direction, the drawing line one from same site is also really good.
    http://www.motionsmarts.com/tutorials/skywriting/skywriting2.html
You could also try using masks to reveal different parts of your image over time by keyframing them? the more layers you have your original images on the more versatility you have - speed of revealing can vary as well as amount etc.
    hope that kinda-semi-helps : )

  • Problem Joining Two Paths!

Okay so I have Illustrator cs3 and so lets say I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
I have made some diagrams to explain my situation since it is hard to explain.
(note that the images on top and bottom are the same but I duplicated the top so the bottom is selected just so you can see)
#1: I make the text, I go to object> expand and click okay, then I add a double stroke. Now see how the g is overlapping the n which is overlapping the i which is overlapping the t etc. I want to join the top of the letter s to the letter top left bar of the letter t for design purposes.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%201.jpg
#2: I go into outline mode so it is easier to see and work in. Then I moved the points of the s and t together and deleted the 2 vertical bars that were previously there using the scissor tool, now the joints (on the top and bottom) are directly on top of each other.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%202.jpg
#3: So I use the direct selection tool and highlight both points so i can join them and make one combined letter and I go to object>path>join and I get this error, how do I work this out and fix this because its really frustrating coming from photoshop where it is really easy to do.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%203.jpg
Here is the .ai file for illustrator cs3 if you need it:
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram.ai
I hope these files helped you and thanks for checking my thread out, I hope I can get this solved soon :)

    > I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
You want to create a ligature: Two characters merged into one glyph.
    > I make the text, I go to object> expand and click okay, then I add a double stroke....I want to join the top of the letter s to the letter top left bar of the letter t for design purposes.

Illustrator's Join command is completely lame. It requires you to select endpoints; it can't join more than two paths at a time; and it can't join paths in different groups. (This latter is what is causing the alert you are seeing.)
But you are going at this in too difficult a manner. For what you are trying to do, all that tedious cutting and joining is not necessary.
Set the text. Convert it to paths (Text>Create Outlines). The result is a Group. Apply the Add Pathfinder (and expand if in CS3), or use the Merge Pathfinder. That will union the overlapping characters.
There are also ways to do this with the text remaining live. Essentially, you apply the outlines at the TextFrame, Group or Layer level, instead of at the individual path level. Example:
    1. Set the text.
    2. Black pointer: select the text object (not a text range of characters).
    3. Appearance Palette flyout: Add New Stroke. Drag the stroke to below the Characters listing.
    4. Repeat step 3 for additional strokes.
If you then want everything to flattened to paths, use Expand Appearance, followed by the Add and/or Merge Pathfinders.

  • Join text paths?

Can someone tell me if it's possible and how to join text
    paths.
I mean if i have two letters say E and T, i convert them to paths then
delete a section from the right of the E
and from the left of the T so that they can join up,
then i take the two endpoints of path that i want to join then go to
    object>path>join, i get the message:
"to join, you must select two open endpoints. If they are not on the same path,
they can not be on text paths nor inside graphs, and if both of them are
grouped, they must be in the same group"
i did select 2 open endpoints and i tried ungrouping the text but i still get the same message.
    Any ideas?
    Daniel

    Daniel,
Probably, the upper border of the parts of the two letters to be joined are aligned, and the lower border is not.
Presuming sans serif letter, in many cases you will obtain the cleanest look if you:
    1) Type>Create Outlines,
    2) Ungroup and Object>Compound Path Release,
    3) With the Scissors Tool cut at the far corners of both upper and lower border,
    4) DirectSelect and Join both to rebuild the joining part.

  • Join line to define object

    Hi,
i'm trying to create a rope under Illustrator CS5.
for that i created the usual "S" line and multiply it in order to create the rope effect.
now i would like to join 2 "S" line together to create a new shape in which i can fill with a color. In that way i will be able to create an alternated colored rope.
however i have some problem to join 2 "S" line in order to create the shape to fill.
Do you have an idea on the best method to do that ?
    thx.

what Jetalmage wrote set the filling color at the beginning and you can't change it later on...you have to recreate a new rope from the coloring step...
Can't understand what you're saying here. For clarity: When you create a Brush, the dialog provides a Colorization option. Using that feature allows you to change the color of a Brush Effect at the object level any time you want. So you can use one Brush to create ropes (wires, whatever) of any color. For example, note that the artwork of the Brushes shown below are all built in grayscale. The color of the individual wire insulations is applied at the object level, as you would for any ordinary stroke. Thus, the two Brushes that are applied to path 4 can be used to make a wire of any maincolor/tracecolor combination. The colorization options are described in online Help, and are even illustrated in the Brush Options dialog itself.
So no, you do not have to create a separate Brush for each color rope (if that's what you are saying).
Regarding joining paths: Join now works without having to "direct select" endpoints with the white pointer. You can just select the paths you want to join, and the Join command will join them at their nearest endpoints. You can override this by selecting the endpoints you want to join when they are not the nearest pair.

  • How do I change the color of the clipping path in CS5

Just installed Photoshop CS5 I use the pen to create a clipping path for isolation. In CS4 the path line always contrasted with the background I was working on. In CS5 it is only gray so I cannot work on grey background pics as I cannot see the path. How can I change it back to multi colored like CS4?
In CS4 I could change between gray & colored by enabling or disabling OpenGL Drawing from Edit->Preferences->Performance. This does not work for me in CS5. I really need the color as I am isolating a dark gray bike againsr a lighter gray wall. I keep loosing the curve handles against the wall.

Which means that the wall isn't neutral gray, it has some color in it. Anyway, that's beside the point. In CS5 they've changed the way they display paths when OpenGL is turned off (probably changed to another API behind the scenes) which caused these problems. If i've understood it correctly, this isn't a bug per se, it's just a limitation of the API that they're using now (lack of blend modes or some such).
If you want the old way back then you can try making a feature request/bug report here: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish
