Joining my network

When ever I wake my computer, the airport is still on, but I have always to wait about 5 seconds before it will see any networks (it sees mine and my neighbors). Now it has started not seeing any networks, I have to start sys prefs, go to network, the location shows automatic, the airport has a red light beside it, the built in ethernet also is red lighted, I click on diagnostics, network diagnostics comes up, click on automatic, choose network is always on built in ethernet (I dont know why), change to airport, it will see my network (and all my neighbors) and I get the pop up telling me my network has changed and then I will get on the net. I think its because its trying to join a ethernet network for some reason, but I don't know how to change it.

Try reconfirming your wi-fi network settings by changing one preference and then changing it back. Also try resetting PRAM on your Macs.
How did you do your install of 10.5? Upgrade install? Archive & Install (with preserve user settings)? Clean install?
If you didn't preserve user settings some of them could be lost.

I have just converted from PC to iMac. Yay. But pls be nice to me; I am back to newb! Running Lion. Have connected a Time Capsule as both a backup and WAP. I want to be able to join the network with my iPad, iPhone, iPod to print. How can I do this?

Can I do this using the Time Capsule. I am not tech, so bear with me. Can I get the iPad to connect wirelessly to the TC, which connects wirelessly to the Canon MP495? Or, can I connect/network the iPad to the iMac to print?
Either way, or if there is any other solution, I would appreciate if someone would walk me through it, or point me to a plain-speaking resource.

Actually, one more: I would like to connect my HP laptop as well. I have heard this is not simple, but possible.

You can create a wifi network with your TC, and you can join this network with your iPad. However, your printer does not support the AirPrint protocol, so you will not be able to print from your iPad, unless you load additional software.
These are the steps:
1. (You may have completed this step already) Set up your TC to create a wireless network. You can do this from AirPort Utility on your Mac or from the AirPort Utility App on your iPad (free download from the App Store).
2. From your iPad, go to settings / wifi and join the network.
3. Download the Canon iPhone App from the App store on your iPad
4. You can now print photos from your iPad to your Canon printer.
If you want full functionality, (not just photos), there is software for your Mac that makes your printer available to your iPad through AirPrint (Printopia). The downside is, you have to purchase it, and you have to have your Mac running when you want to print from your iPad.

My i-phone cannot connect to my wi fi-all of a suddon. My wife's i-phone 4 is connected to the wi-fi network.
I just tried to connect my daughter's i-phone 5, and could not connect message came up "unable to join the network "Sunday".
My I-pad is connected to Sunday also.
I tried the reset routine, and when I try to get on line, it asks for my password. I put it in and it stll says unable to hoin message.

How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

HT4623 Hi having difficulty connecting to wifi following upgrade to 7.0.4 for an iPad 4. Have done a complete power down and restart , no luck. Unable to enter a password to the home locked wifi. Message coming back Unable to join the network ".........

Just installed iOS 7.0.4 on the ipad, and can no longer connect to my home locked wifi. I choose the home wifi network and the message comes back with Unable to join the network "............" Dismiss. There is no prompt for the password for the locked network. . . . Any suggestions . . . . .

Mac Pro running 10.7.5.
Whenever the computes wakes from sleep or logs in, it no longer automatically connects to my wifi network. When I manually select the network for from the Wi-Fi status in the menu bar, I get the following message: Could not join "wifi network name". A connection timeout occurred.
Even though I get that message the machine joins the network with no other problems. I am led to believe that is is on the Mac Pro as my Macbook and iPad/iPhone join the network with no issues.
I have tried deleting and restoring the preferred network, and remember networks is checked. I have also restored my airport express base station.
Any suggestions?

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

First, grow up. Just because YOUR phone isn't working, doesn't mean Apple put out bad software. I've not had any difficulty, nor has anyone else I know. And just how is Apple risking lives with Bluetooth kits not working? It's YOUR decision to talk on the phone or text and drive. Not Apple's.
We're users here, volunteering our time to help others. Posts like yours, which are whiny and ranting, simply means we're likely to ignore you and not provide you with any help. Not to mention, it makes you look absolutely foolish.
Further making you look foolish is the fact that you haven't even asked a technical support question, nor have you provided anyone here with any troubleshooting steps you might have taken, including those recommended in the user guide.

New iPod Unable to join the network after inputting password

Got my iPod this am..
looked too good to touch no pun intended.
I went through the instructions, interrupted with an offer to update_, which I did.
I then saw that the iPod was off line and went to set up the connection.
I do have a Time Capsule but I just use it as an external drive, I use Ethernet connections between it my Netopia router/modem which provides my Wi Fi for another computer.
I have a WPA-PSK security on the Netopia.
My Wi Fi shows up on available networks, I am asked for my password but then I get a message "Unable to join the network"
I must admit that my password is long (and a bit racy) my fingers a bit big, but I know that I have got it right on at least a few occasions.
I have tried entering the details on "Other network" with the same result.
Could my WPA-PSK be a problem?
I would be most grateful for any suggestions.
Various forms of this problem have appeared on this forum, but I think mine is a bit different.

Went through that pretty well.
Finally solved it in 2 steps.
1. reset my modem/router to factory settings.
Odd situation, wireless settings, but dependent on ethernet connection.
2. read a post from Hong Kong re strange network settings.
On his advice, into network, changed location from Automatic to one of my choosing.
Bingo! everything came good.
Totally wireless connection. iPod jumped to it. Isn't it great when everything comes together?
I still wonder why it didn't take the signal from the WiFi part of my Modem/Router?
Probably just as well as it sorted my Time Capsule connections out, probably for the first time since I bought one back in early 2008, and its recent replacement when it joined the epidemic of sudden death recently.

Upgrading to ios 7 my ipad is stuck joining a network, I can't do anything with it, if I press the home button it says ipad not set up.

If I press the home button it says ipad not set up then gives me the option to continue I press that and am back to a screen which says joining other network, can't press anything on that. It's been like it for about half an hour now. help.

Restarting your iOS device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
After the device has turned off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
If you are unable to continue, try resetting the phone with this from the same article:

If your device stops responding, you can reset it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

It sounds like he is setting up the iPod via wif. You can't continue. What yo can do is reset the iPod
- Reset the iOS device.
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Then start the setup over again but this time connect the iPod to a computer and set up via iTunes. Then he can troubleshoot the connection proboem.

Can't get Airport to join a network

I have a G5 PowerPC running the latest and greatest. I connect to the Internet via a 2Wire modem. My G5 is connected via Ethernet. All is OK, except...
...when I try to join my modem's network, I get either a bad password or timeout message. Any ideas? This is inhibiting my ability to configure and use my Airport Express, among other things.
I suppose that I could have a problematic prefs file somewhere. Can anyone tell me which files I could delete to fix this?

Thanks for the clarification, but as I mentioned, the Airport Extreme cannot perform this function because the ethernet ports on the Extreme are not enabled when you configure it to join another network. It's unfortunate that Apple includes this option in the setup utility, because it's non-functional with the AirPort Extreme.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express "n" version can "join a wireless network" and you do have the option to enable the ethernet port in this configuration. But neither the AirPort Extreme or the Time Capsule (which is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive) allow this type of functionality.
Bottom line, the AirPort Extreme won't do what you want unless you can connect it to your Qwest modem/router using using an ethernet cable, or if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable, you might look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. In fact, if your goal is to only provide an ethernet connection to the DirectTV DVR, you don't even need the AirPort Extreme to do this unless you want it to perform other routing functions.

MacBook will not join Airport network

I am flummoxed. My MacBook will not join my Airport Extreme network. It was fine this morning. I have restarted the MacBook. I have restarted the Airport base station. My iPhone is connecting to the network fine. My TV is connecting to the network fine. My G4 is connecting to the network fine. So, it appears there is some issue with the MacBook itself. Any ideas what could be the issue?

First, either update your profile or your OS to 10.5.6. There have been many bug fixes since 10.5.2 and some WiFi updates require the latest Leopard version.
That being said, check your network preferences.
Do you have a rational IP Address?
If you are using an encrypted WiFi, you can temporarily turn off the encryption and see if the MB can join the network. If so, it's an encryption issue. If not, turn the encryption back on and we will have to look elsewhere.
BTW, you should be using WPA since WEP has long ago been compromised and is useless, but thats a side thing right now.
On the MB, I would run disk utility and repair permissions for starters.

Error Joining Airport Network

My new Mac will not go online at home - although it will join other networks elsewhere.
There are 3 other Macs online at home and when I set up my new mac I transferred all the settings over so surely they should be the same and therefore able to access the internet?
Have even removed all passwords. Can anyone help?

What I do is create a new Network Location called "All Off" in which all network interfaces are disabled. This essentially "reboots" the network connection from the Mac end.
I also prefer a dedicated "WiFi" location to eliminate the possibility of another interface complicating connecting. This location has only the Airport card enabled.
I suggest you set it to the "All Off" location, then powercycle your WiFi router, meaning reboot it. When it is up and connected, turn on your Mac's network WiFi. When mine refuses to connect that always works.
