Joining my Office Wireless Network - Please Help!

Hi there,
hope someone can help. I'm trying to connect to my office wireless network and although airport is picking up the network name, when it asks for a password and I enter this in - 'there was an error joining the ...network' message appears.
The password entered is correct since this was obtained directly from our IT Manager. He has no real experience of MacOSX but seems to think we need to further tweak the wireless network advanced settings for this connection - things like network authentication, key index, etc.
Where can I acess these more advances options on OSX??
Any other feedback for this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Tim,
Its protected with a WEP Password which I've already
tried but just keep getting the error message.
Aha, WEP passwords can be troublesome on some Wireless routers.
We've had another go at this today but still no joy.
My airport card seems to be detecting the network
fine but connecting to it with the password is a
stalling point at the moment! I've also tried using
the password with the other types of password
encryption from the drop down menu with no luck.
If entering a WEP key you need in somecase to put a $ infront of the passcode.
Are you enterinig a full hexidecimal key?
Also your IT manager shoud be aware that WEP is relatively straightforward to crack even by amateur crackers. WPA or WPA2 is the only wireless protection that you should consider.

  • Can't connect my Ipod Touch 2nd gen to home wireless network - please help

I have just received a 2G ipod touch today and it will not connect to my home network. I have a SKY Netgear router with numerous devices wirelessly connected with WPA security. I have input the shared network key when my Ipod asks for a password but it will not connect (even if I am stood next to my router). I just get "Unable to join the network .........". I have tried connecting via the 'other' network route but still the same result. Please help.

Here's a few things you can do to get to the bottom of the problem:
    - Have you ever connected to a public hotspot? The only reason I ask is this will rule out hardware problems. If you are not close to anything, download and install the free app WiFinder from the app store. Once you have the app installed, you see what networks are around you. If nothing is working, contact Apple and either visit the Genius Bar or return it Apple.
    - If you have disabled encryption in your router and you are still be prompted for a password, you need to tap on that network name and tap Forget Network. And to really make sure everything is cleaned out, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings.
    - After your iPod restarts, use WiFinder to find your network. WiFinder will tell you whether or not you have encryption on or off and the type of encryption used. If it is still off, just tap the Connect button. If you have turned it back on, go to Settings > WiFi > Other network and enter your network name. You will be prompted for your encryption scheme and your password. WPA and WPA2 should have a password entered. WEP should have the hex key entered.
    - If you still can't connect, I would check and reenter my password. Passwords are case sensitive.
    - Assuming you have connected, tap the blue arrow (>) next to your network name. You should see your IP address, subnet mask, router IP address, and DNS router addresses, you are good to go.
    - If you have an IP address of 169.x.x.x, your router is not supplying an IP address. Recommend router settings are:
    SSID - on
    DHCP - on
    MAC filtering - off
Encryption - on and set to WPA or WPA2
    DNS - automatic from ISP
    Let us know what happens.

  • PCs suddenly no longer see Airport Express wireless network - please help!

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and I need help. Two days ago - without me making any changes to settings etc. my Airport Express wireless network at home was no longer visible to any of my devices except to the Powerbook (G4 OS 10.3.9) which controls it. From one second to the next two Vista laptops and my cell phone (Nokia, Symbian OS).
My Powerbook has no problem connecting through AE to the internet. The two laptops are both able to connect to other wireless networks so they don't seem to be the problem. I just don't understand what caused this sudden drop-off/invisibility.
I have already tried the following: resetting the base station, changing the channel on the base station (from automatic) removing the network security altogether (from WPA2). But none of the devices except the powerbook can now see or detect my network.
Please - if anyone knows what the cause of this problem could be or how to fix I would be very grateful!!

    you name it : com.apple.airport.adminutility.plist
delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..
    Best wishes from Germany

  • Does my time capsule HAVE to join my existing wireless network please?

ok i am trying to get my TC to join my wireless network but its not having it!!
(it was but now i cant seem to get it to work)
so my question is....can i just have its as its own separate wireless network just to talk with my macbook & imac so they can back up wirelessly please?
or would this cause problems as they are on my personal home wireless network??
    anyone know please?
    thanks!

so my question is....can i just have its as its own separate wireless network just to talk with my macbook & imac so they can back up wirelessly please?
You can do, but you don't need to.
If you create a separate WLAN for your Time Capsule then you'll need to switch your clients to the TC WLAN to make their backups, then switch them back to the regular LAN when they're done. Bear in mind that your regular WLAN (and, presumably your internet access, etc.) will be unavailable while you're switch to the other WLAN.
There has to be a better way, surely? Of course. If your existing WLAN is working well enough for you, then just connect the TimeCapsule to your existing network via an ethernet cable. Now it will be part of your LAN, all your clients can see it and back up to it, but you don't have any issues with having to switch AirPort networks on the client (in effect, your client sends its data wirelessly to your existing base station which then forwards the data over the ethernet LAN. Problem solved.

  • DNS Error when trying to connect xbox360 to WRT54G wireless network, Please help!!

I recently purchased a new router (WRT54G Ver.6) and the initial setup went well. however, when I try to connect my xbox 360 to this network, the DNS does not resolve and it fails every time. what should I do?

    Hi…..
Well in this case first make sure whether the computers which are connected [wired or wireless] to the router are able to get online.
If the computers are not able to get online through the router then you will have to configure the router. And if the computers are able to get online then in order to resolve the DNS Error in order to get the X-Box360 working you can assign Static DNS Address to the X-Box
The Static DNS Address you can use can be 206.13.29.12 and 206.13.30.12

  • Airport Express joining a network - Please HELP!

I just got an AirPort Express 802.11n Wi-Fi, and I am trying to make it so I can get better connection to the internet from different floors of the building wirelessly. When it decides to actually read the Express I can get to the point where it is asking me for the network I want it to join and I select it and put in the password (which I know is correct), but when I hit continue absolutely nothing happens. Its as if I did nothing. So I'm stuck because it doesn't even tell me if I did something wrong or if it wont work or anything.

Hello feldmane. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If your goal is to extend an existing wireless network with the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), then the option to "join an existing wireless network" would not be the correct choice. If the wireless router you want to extend is another AirPort, then you should use reconfigure them into a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) (for 802.11g) or "extend a network" (for 802.11n). If the other wireless router is NOT another AirPort, then extending with the AXn most likely will not work as very few non-AirPorts are WDS-compatible.

  • Help me clarify: Difference between Joining and Extending Wireless Network

I've eventually figured out how to get my AirPort Express to allow my Mac Pro access to the internet Via Ethernet cable by joining an existing wireless network. What's the difference between that and extending it? By extending it I loose my ability to use the ethernet to connect to internet on my Mac Pro. Odd thing is though when I initially used AirPort Utility to set up my AirPort Express, I went through all the options to get it configured to access my existing network and I checked option to allow internet access through ethernet. All is well, but then I still don't have access to the internet through the ethernet and I noticed that the setting is on Extended. Just curious why it would give me the option to use the ethernet, set it on extended and not even work.

I've eventually figured out how to get my AirPort Express to allow my Mac Pro access to the internet Via Ethernet cable by joining an existing wireless network. What's the difference between that and extending it?
When "joining a network," the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) acts just like any other wireless client (laptop, desktop, printer, etc.) You would want to configure the AX to join a network when you only want to use it to share a USB printer and/or stream iTunes.
When "extending a network," the AX can perform as either a main, relay, or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). A WDS is primarily used to extend a network wirelessly.
By extending it I loose my ability to use the ethernet to connect to internet on my Mac Pro.
If the AX is configured as either a relay/remote base station in a WDS, you actually can use it's Ethernet port for Internet access. Of course, this relay/remote must be connected to a main base station, that itself, has Internet access.

  • Can my older Airport Express 802.11g join an existing wireless network

I have a Airport Express 802.11g firmware version 6.3 . Using the most recent Airport Express Utility I can set it up as a base station on its own independent network but I cannot join it to my existing home wireless network. As I go through the wizard (or manual setup) It just does not detect/display any existing wireless networks. I have plenty of mobile devices in the  house that can see the wireless network...and next doors network.
So, it begs the question ... is an 802.11g unit actually capable of joining another network or is this capability available on later models only. A search of apple support and the wider internet for "Airport Express 802.11g capabilities" yeilds a blizzard or useless info.
    Thank you

Sorry, I cannot help on Windows since I do not have a Windows 7 machine here to test. I have used XP in the past and AirPort Utility appears to be virtually the same in Windows as a Mac. I assume that this is the case for AirPort Utility 5.6.1, and it should be able to configure the Express.
The older Express will join most wireless networks if the following conditions are met:
    1) The Express is functioning correctly.
    2)  The wireless network name is 12 characters or less and it contains only normal letters and numbers. Avoiding blank spaces in the wireless network name will help improve the chances of the Express joining the network as well.
    3)  The wireless router is broadcasting a compatible signal that would allow the "g" Express to connect. If your network is broadcasting a wireless "n only" signal, the Express cannot connect to this network.
    4)  The wireless security on the network is set to a WPA compatible setting. That is because the older Express has difficulty joining 3rd party wireless networks using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES encryption. In other words, if your network is now using WPA2 Personal or WPA2-PSK-AES settings, the "g" Express will probably not be able to join the network.
    5)  If you are using MAC Address Filtering on your network, the MAC address of the Express will need to be included in your settings.
    6)  The wireless network password uses the same guidelines that appear in 2) above
The items noted above will provide the Express with the best chance of joining your network.  Plan to use the Manual Setup option in AirPort Utility and be prepared to use the Option or Alt keys on the PC if needed.
If you are looking for a guarantee of success in advance for this task, I cannot provide that and you should wait for another user to post who might be able to meet your requirements in that regard.

  • I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express.
I am using a DLink DI-524 Router, Windows 7 (64), and the AirPort Express.
AirPort Utility will not recognize the AEX wirelessly, it will only recognize it when it is connected by Ethernet. I can then configure the AEX and verify that the settings stick once disconnected and then reconnected. However, even after that, it will not recognize the AEX once disconnected from the Ethernet cable.
I followed the suggestions of several other threads on these forums. But I am unable to get the AEX to work.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
It's almost always a security setting that causes problems when the Airport Express (AX) tries to join a third party wireless network. The AX usually does not "join" correctly and that's why you can't see it on your wireless network using AirPort Utility.
Using an ethernet cable is still the more reliable way to configure and adjust the AX, but if you are want to try to configure it using wireless, you must return the AX back to factory defaults as follows:
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
When it is set to factory defaults, the AX broadcasts a wireless signal with a network name like "apple network xxxxxx" where the "x's" are either letters or numbers. You must look for this network by clicking on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen. If you don't see this network, then click Join Other Network to search that way. Unless you connect to this network, you will not be able to configure the AX using wireless.
Do you know the exact security type that your D-Link router is using? That is the key element in the process.
Open AirPort utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to establish a name for the AX, device password and adjust time zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...must exactly match your D-Link wireless network name
Enable ethernet clients if you want the port to be active (your D-Link must be compatible with ProxySTA for this to work)
Wireless Security...exact setting of the D-Link network. WEP security causes a lot of issues. Try to use WPA/WPA2 Personal, which is far more secure.
Wireless Password...must match the D-Link network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
    Click Update to save settings
    Any luck?

  • Can't get AirPort Express to join LINKSYS WRT54G wireless network

After several unsuccessful attempts to follow Tesserax's advice to get my AX to join my LINKSYS wireless network, I depressed the reset button, plugged the AX in, and waited for the flashing reset confirmation. Reconfiguring from scratch to join my WPA network, all seemed to go well. After selecting to Update, the following window pops up:
<The settings for this AirPort Express have been successfully updated. You can close this window or wait for this AirPort Express to restart.
Waiting for the AirPort Express to restart…>
After a couple of minutes the following window appears:
<AirPort Utility was unable to find your AirPort Wireless device after restarting.
The settings for this AirPort wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the AirPort wireless device. You may need to select your network from the Wi-Fi menu and try again.>
At this point, AirPort Utility will no longer recognize the AX, no matter how many times I rescan. The only way I can get it to be recognized is to once again do a hard factory reset. I then go through the whole set up process again, only to end up in the same dead end. I'm thinking that there has to be some sort of problem between the AX and the LINKSYS. Prior to the above activity, I was able to send iTunes to the AX just fine. I just wasn't able to surf the Internet at the same time.
Any ideas you might have will be appreciated.

Thomas - I have a very similar problem - I've got a Wi-Fi/ADSL2 router supplied by my telecom company AirTel (the router's called 'beetel', 802.11g model) and I'm having problems extending it with Airport Express - the Airport Utility doesn't seem to be able to detect the AE after restart. The only difference with your case seems that you have a Linksys piece.
    Here's what I tried:
    1. Had my Wi-Fi network up & running with the beetel router (network name: PASTA)
    2. Booted Airport Express
    3. Launched Airport Utility 5.5.3 from Windows 7, detected the Airport Express, chose Manual Setup and went for option "Extend my Wireless Network" and chose PASTA and specified its password
    3. Airport Utility restarted the device after saving changes, and Aiport Express went invisible.
That sounds like the same problem you had.
Just to cross check, I tried connecting an Ethernet cable between AE and the beetel router and went for option "Create Wireless Network" and that was a breeze.
@Tesserax - can Airport Express smoothly extend only an Airport Extreme WiFi network? Is there anything I can do to extend my current Wi-Fi network from this router?
Thanks for your notes & time

  • Joining an existing wireless network with airport express

Ok, am almost to the point of throwing my AX across the room
AM trying to join an existing wireless network, its from a 2Wire gateway
    one of three things happen
it won't find the AX in the first place
it recognizes it, but i can't connect to it
it goes through the configuration and when it restarts the AX, it can't reconnect to either the router or the AX and it fails. if this happens i can't reconnect to my wireless network without deleting it and re-adding.
it doesn't show up in my available wireless networks at all
protected via WEP, and i have tried using all the security options.

The directions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
Are you using MAC address access control in addition to WEP?
Turn off WEP and see if that makes a difference?
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.
Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058
WEP is now considered not to be secure and therefore it is advised you use WPA.
"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • Can't join my old Airport Express Network, please help!

    Hey,
I was running a wireless network without any problems last year in my appartment. I sublet for the summer, and when I came back I couldn't join my network even though my Mac was reading the same network name. I had also saved the password in the Keychain, and when I go into the keychain it's there, but I don't know how to use it to give me some answers.
Also, when I try to enter the WEP password manually, I'm told that the password is incorrect, even though I'm certain it isn't. I'm totally shut out. I've tried to configure the password with the Airport Admin but it doesn't pick up my network.
I'd love to get back on the network, or close it and reset it if I have to. Can anyone out there help me out? Thanks kindly in advance.

    Hi Damian,
I'm not very familiar with the Express, but do you know if the person you sublet to changed any of the Wi-Fi settings, like the password or activated the MAC (Media Access Control) list if the unit has one - thus locking your machine out as its not on the approved list?
Can you login to it with an Ethernet cable by using the last know Admin user name & password. If not maybe try to reset the device & start over I guess.

  • EYETV WIRELESSLY OVER NETWORK Please help!

    Hi
I have a wireless network at home with a old windows xp system directly plugged into the router (Netgear dg834g), and a power mac g4 and macbook running wirelessly.
I also have an EyeTV Terratec T2 wireless unit for watching digital television.
It plugs in through usb is there a way i can plug the unit into either the windows machine (preferably) or the powermac g4 and then hijack the usb connection to the macbook and watch tele through the macbook?
The Tv unit is great but its a right pain all the wires and having to be near a tv point in my house, as i am 90 miles away from the digital transmitter and the small aerial that came with it is just not good enough for that.
    Thanks for your help
    Nick

Are you using a switch or a hub, I would try finding a crossover cable and hooking the two units directly together, that will tell you if it is the network, or one of your machines
I just reread your post, since you say it works fine (on your mac in bootcamp/xp) maybe there is a buffer setting on the media player
How are you connecting to the nas, SMB AFP, NFS?? maybe try a different connection setting. I would guess its not hardware related, since your using the same hardware (hub, computer etc) and it works in bootcamp/xp.

  • Using laptop on separate home and office wireless networks

I have a laptop the connects (wireless) to my home router and my other home computers. At work we have a wireless router (both home and office are linksys wrt54g's). I can connect to the router at work, get to the internet, but can't "see" the other PCs at work.
Is there a good reference to trouble shoot the various settings for the routers, Windows XP, firewalls, Symantic, McAfee, and so on? I have administration privileges on all the systems and routers, but can't seem to get the settings right. BTW both routers are hardwired to PCs that use the same version of McAfee's security programs - my laptop uses Symantic security programs
    Thanks.

If you intend using your portable Mac in a variety of different environments then I recommend you create a series of Locations and then switch between them as required. Keep Automatic for your most used network such as your home or office and then create additional ones for say, wireless networks on the road, an internet connection via your mobile phone and so on.
I am getting confused though, you say
'Actually, even if I boot to the login screen, I will see the G4 appear and can start transferring files, but after 10 -15 minutes, it disappears.'
From what you said earlier in this thread I thought you meant that the G4 laptop would either be visible or not to the other Macs when you join one of your networks not that it is visible for a while then drops off the network. Which is it please?
If it is the latter then check in System Preferences/Energy Saver to see if 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep ...' is ticked and if it is untick it. You might also want to extend the time for 'Put the computer to sleep ....' to see if that makes a difference.
