Jpeg Corruption
Hi, I have a problem receiving JPEG attached files. They appear grey or can't be openned through Viewer when downloaded.
It's stange cause I have another computer (a powerbook) on the same WIFI net and the problem is the same.
Can anyone help, I'm kind of lost here... Virus? When I try to open the files It says that they can't be openned and they might be corrupted...
Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Please provide some more information on the WiFi connection? Is this a public WiFi connection? Wireless router, hooked to your modem in home network?
Are they from the same sender, or various senders?
More info, please.

I have a MacBook Pro from Late 2008, running Lion.
Because of my computer turning very slow I doublechecked everything, why that could be, but couldn't find anything,
last week somebody checkt my console and saw that I constantly get these internal errors from my iTunes regarding a JPEG file,
when I went looking for help, nobody knew what to do, what it meant or how to stop it…
Because of the errors a lot of my CPU is lost and my MBP gets hot, slow en start making a lot of annoying ventilating noise.
I coppied a piece of the errors from the console down bellow:

JPEG Corruption post transfer over USB External Drive (usb2.0)
Hello
I have two external drives, both support firewire400/800 and USB2.
On the firewire 400 settings no issue at all.
Previously on PPC powerbook, I used firewire 800 and no issues at all.
While waiting for my expresscard34-firewire800 to arrive this week, I am using the USB2 port on the macbook pro to trasnfer a jpeg library (c24gb) to and from, using either the internal 7200rpm sata drive on the machine, or also from the connected firewire 400 lacie 1tb bigger disc.
Whichever solution I use to copy from, all JPEG's that go via the USB2 port on the macbook, any usb2.0 port, get corrupted. I can open in aperture/bridge, or even testing in vista beta or xp and the files are corrupt. But if I transfer via the firewire 400, all is fine.
I can switch around the external drives, I have deleted all partitions and reformatted, and even gone through both fat32/osx-journaled options to no avail. Weird or what?
My only thinking option here is to create a .dmg 24gb file of the whole folder, and move that across, but that is just daft.
P.s. transferring any other type of data works perfectly fine, e.g. .mp3/.doc.xls etc.
Any thoughts on this weird one.
thks in advance!
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hello,
The iMac G4 17" 1GHz only has USB1.1 so it doesn't matter that the MyBook is USB2.0 you'll only transfer at USB1.1 speeds (1.5MBps). As there is no way to add USB2.0 to the iMac G4 ≤1GHz you need to look at a Firewire drive like the MyBook Pro/Premium; incidentally, both of these come with back-up software too.
The iMac G4 can't boot from USB so if your internal drive fails you can't boot the iMac like you could on a Firewire drive.
Personally I do have my MyBook Pro partitioned in to a back-up space which matches my internal hard drive and a separate media file partition.
BTW you have posted in the Intel iMac forum. The users here will be less familiar with the specific issues that iMac (Flat Panel)s may suffer. I'd advise that you post future queries in the iMac G4 forum:

Help I have corrupt JPEGs. The pictures show up fine in in thumbnail but when opened up in preview they only show half of the picture.
Thanks again
CarlCarl:
Export a couple of the problem jpgs to the desktop and open them with Preview or Safari. Are they corrupt in those applications?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
JPEG corrupted, fails import into itunes, mangled datafork?
Hi there Ladies and Gentlemen, I have tried with GraphicConverter but my recent ImageCapture
of some JPEGS from my Canon Powershot are properly corrupted! I cannot import them into
iphoto at all, and preview does not open them either. The GraphicConverter shows a mangled
datafork? It does not recognize the formt... is there any freeware tool out there in the world
to fixup the JPEGS that are corrupt? The JFIF-JPEG Repair tool does not run on OSX 10.4 , since the
version of AppleScript is not recognized....
any tips are welcomed, I would like to fixup my 6 images from the vacation which I think are the best ones ....
all the best, and pip pip
sir nullMeant to tackle this one earlier. Chances are your problem files have multiple ID3 tags with inconsistent information and iTunes is only reading one of them.
If the tags read cleanly in a 3rd party tag editor or something like MediaMonkey then you should be able to delete any id3v1.x tags and settle on id3v2.3. In extreme cases you may wish to erease all tags and then rebuild from the file paths, though that presupposes that you have or can get the tracks in a standard <Artist>\<Album>\## <Track> layout.
Once you've fixed the tracks you can either delete and then reimport, or attempt to get iTunes to notice the changes by playing each track (briefly) in turn. I've written a script called UpdateTagInfo which should automate the process of getting iTunes to read any changed metadata but I've not tested its effectiveness lately.

Slow mail, jpeg corruption
Lately i have noticed that Mail has been taking long checking my .Mac mail. I had a friend send me a few jpegs and i seemed as if i was downloading a 20mb file. I also noticed that when i sent him a jpeg to would be a corrupt file on his end both with a pc and mac. These jpegs open fine on my end and have tried more then one, but as soon as i send them with mail they are corrupt. Anyone have any answers or experiencing the same thing with mail and .Mac.
Tom,
As I have responded by email, the test images you sent to me have been opened by several different applications. The only thing I found to suspect as the source of problems with some recipients (but by no means all) was that the JPEGs were saved to include the camera, or EXIF data, which is a desired action.
However, some photo applications provide easy methods of removing the EXIF or even all metadata (only used by Macs, but not required by them).
I remain uncertain of differences between what you experience, versus your recipients? Were my screenshots received and viewed in good order? Given your other report of slowness, is there any reason to suspect your connection (although it did not impact sending to me)?
Since you are using a .mac account, you might be interested in the Topic at the link below:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=253262&tstart=0
I have not seen any impact on the ability to display with a .mac account, but some investigation of IMAP accounts, caching, and display are suspect.

This isn't really just an IPhoto issue. Every single photo I try and import, from any camera (I've tried three) and different CF cards is corrupt when displayed. The top half of the pics are fine but the bottom 1/3rd are all a jumble of colors. The same exact images, loaded into a Windows machine are fine.
This is driving me nuts, I can't figure it out. Any idea's????
Thanks,I just fixed the problem...
I set my avast standard shield to normal and the delay instantly went away -
what WAS happening: at 10-13 seconds, ashserve.exe (part of my recently installed Avast antivirus) spiked to 97-99% cpu usage, which temporarily locked my computer as well as pausing the song. -
Lightroom 1.4.1 says JPEG corrupt but aren't with Sony DSC-V1
An old batch of jpeg pictures taken with a Sony DSC-V1 point and shoot can longer be viewed or edited in Lightroom 1.4.1 (or 2.0 beta) on Windows Vista.
Lightroom 1.3 can read them without problem. Current workaround is to batch convert them in Photoshop.Hi MacAddict39,
Do you use Port Forwading in your Modem to open the ports for iChat ?
Does the device insist that you specify Protocols as well ?
Can you select a "Both " option for port 5190 or is it two separate lines, one for TCP and one for UDP ?
If you device does work this way and you have two entries for port 5190 delete the TCP one
Next go to IChat and Log out of AIM.
Go to the Preferences > Accounts
Go to the Server Settings tab.
Near the top change where it says port 5190 to 443.
This stops any Port Forwarding clash with port 5190.

ImageIo: reading and writing a jpeg corrupts the image
Sometimes, ImageIo manages to read an image wrong. If I simply read() and write() the
image without any transformations, the image writtten will have its colors all wrong. The
output image format here doesn't matter.
An example image is: http://bram.name/~brama/pics/test.jpg
And output after reading and writing it: http://bram.name/~brama/pics/test_output.jpg
Is the image io lib to blame, or is it a broken image? The image displays fine in other programs.
Message was edited by:
Bram_AUse this code to load the image.
From my experience it is much more stable and also faster.
My guess is that the problem is related to the ICC profile embeded in the JPEG.
JPEGImageDecoder decoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGDecoder(new URL("http://www.stack.nl/~brama/pics/imageio.jpg").openStream());
BufferedImage image = decoder.decodeAsBufferedImage(); -
Itunes 10.6.3 on OSX (Lion) crashes on startup
Since the last software update my iTunes no longer runs when I click the icon on my dock or in the Applications folder. It crashes after about 10-20 seconds and never displays a window. I've pasted the log below.
If I run iTunes from the command line it opens. I get a complaint about a Quartz visualizer plugin not being for the correct architecture, but otherwise it runs totally fine. If I have clicked on the icon that makes iTunes not open before I run it from the command line it does verify/check my library which takes a little while, but otherwise once that is done all is well.
Output from the command line run of iTunes:
$ ./iTunes
2012-07-06 08:25:49.889 The plugin 'Quartz Composer Visualizer' failed to load because it has the wrong CPU architecture for this version of iTunes. (3585)
ImageIO: <ERROR> JPEG Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
ImageIO: <ERROR> JPEG Corrupt JPEG data: 224 extraneous bytes before marker 0x03
(The longer I let it run, the more of the ImageIO errors that I see, maybe a dozen after 24hrs)

A script for moving files to folder ? or relaunch photoshop
I'm looking for a very simple java script to check file corruption
it should:
1.open a file I send to it (via droplet)
2.if it works > close the file > send the file to a folder like c:/checked/
3.if the open sequence crashes or doesn't work > re launch photoshop
4.mark the file as beeing corrupt or send it to a another folder
I don t know how to move a file via java script without saving
I don t know how I can relaunch ? force-quit photoshop ? is this even possible ?

xbytor2 > thats the exact problem I'm having. If there is a "wrong" file into my batch, photoshop stop/ crash, is waiting for an action on my side... the whole idea of using photoshop droplets is to do it without me.
Should I parse the files (I have jpegs; png and raws... parsing raws ?)? Would it be better like someone said to use a script that "try catch"? (no idea what it is or how to write this). I also red that photoshop image processing is skipping bad files, is that true ? how could I apply this technique ?
bad file > skip > no crash > process continue running would be even better than the original validation idea
"Unfortunately, there are types of jpeg corruptions that cause PS to throw up a 'Broke File' dialog in spite of how you open the file or have your DialogModes preferences set. PS just stops cold waiting for user interaction. I'll see if I can locate one of these that I used to test with. The last time I looked at this problem in depth (CS2 or CS3) PS was still misbehaving.
xbytor2 if much more of an expert than I am in the script area so will have to defer to him"
I would have to defer to xbytor2 since he is much more of an expert than I in scripting. If the Try....Catch construct does not work, than Image Processor in PS and also accessed by Bridge would fail under the same circumstances since that is the construct that script uses. Interesting
"How would you write that ? Are you saying that if I use this script at the beginning of my photoshop droplets, it won't crash on a bad file and continue looping on the next ?:"
If you want to use the Try...Catch constructs looking at the Image Processor Code from ExtendScript ToolKit (or other script editor) would let you see how it operates. They use the Try...Catch construct in multiple locations in that script.
At the highest level in Image Processor here is the basic code below for the Try...Catch construct with most everything else stripped out.
There are two main steps. One is to set the app.displayDialogs mode to NO. The second is to use the try...catch construct below. The error routine is the catch portion of the code just displays the error code. Then the dialog mode is reinstated to the original settings set by the User. The same construct is used deeper into the code so that would be a source of at least the approach Image Processor uses.
try {
// remember the dialog modes
gSaveDialogMode = app.displayDialogs;
app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.NO;
Code you want to execute goes here
// Lot's of things can go wrong
// Give a generic alert and see if they want the details
catch( e ) {
if ( e.number != 8007 ) { // don't report error on user cancel
alert( e + " : " + e.line );
// restore the dialog modes
app.displayDialogs = gSaveDialogMode; -
Crashing after Security Update 2015-004
Hello - I'm running a new MBP with OSX 10.9.5 for 3 months with no issues, love the SSD. I finally applied the Security Update 2015-004 that has been waiting for me to find a convenient time. Did this yesterday Friday 4/24 morning, and the OSX has crashed 4 times now. I normally run Terminal (Version 2.4 (326)), Parallels( windows vm not always running - Version 10.1.3 (28868) ), XQuartz( 2.7.7 (xorg-server 1.15.2), Microsoft Remote Desktop(Version 8.0.16 (Build 25978)), Stickies, Connected Backup in background (V 8.6.2.4), and generally three browsers (Safari-Version 7.1.5 (9537.85.14.17), Firefox-V33.1, Chrome-Version 42.0.2311.90 (64-bit)). It has crashed both wired (at work place) and wireless (at home).
So far there has been no one active application that it crashes in. At work, I was in a browser once and Adobe Reader displaying a User Guide, at home in Chrome trying to stream to AppleTV with AirDisplay.
Is there a way to roll this update out? Is there an emerging picture/issue or combination of applications that this is happening with? There are a few hits in web searches that indicate others are running into something with this update.

System "hiccup" during Time Machine Backups
Over the course of the past week or so, I've noiticed that my system will freeze/stall/hiccup (whatever you call it) during Time Machine backups. This will apply to YouTube/Vimeo videos, iTunes (where I noticed it... it's like the song pauses and resumes 2 or 3 times over 10 seconds), task switching, text entry, etc. Again, this is only a recent thing.
Here's a log of what I was doing during this last backup. Didn't check the time when iTunes froze, but it happened at least twice, maybe 3 times.

Little things dent your confidence...
Importing.
Trying to import from a 32 GB CF card - I have maybe 6 different days shooting on it.
Have tried to import selected batches of photos to separate projects relevant to the day taken.
In theory I have imported all projects but have about 20 files that keep showing as unimported despite having don't import duplicates listed.
They are movs from a Canon 5D II
I've restarted Aperture and the same bunch of files will import again to a project (duplicates) and still remain listed for import.
I don't know what's causing this but it dents my confidence in Aperture's file handling capability/library integrity - I've not seen it before.
Any ideas?
I've had to force quit once or twice with the latest update too.
ACHi Ernie
I've never encountered this before which is why it's baffling me (and I do delete the odd photo/video from time to time in camera).
Just to clarify I am not seeing this behaviour if I try to import the images from a disk based copy as they are recognised as already imported.
Could it be something to do with manually selecting images and importing rather than letting Aperture autosplit?
These messages/errors are appearing in console logs:

Address Book Freezes Whilst launching
I am trying to consolidate my contacts by importing multiple duplicates contacts contained in various backup as Vcards and updating the same to have one complete contact database. However I noticed that one of the contacts repeats the mutiple contact information many times over and when I try to edit that particular contact the Addressbook freezes and I have to force quit.
Any subsequent attempt to open the address book leads to it freezing without displaying the contacts window page. I then have to force quit again without entering the application to continue my work.
Can someone tell me how to resolve this problem please. I am stuck at the moment.Error Message Received from Console when I attempt to open Addressbook.
