Look at Mail>preferences>accounts. Highlight the account>advanced. Look at the attachment settings. That may help.

I'm not sure from your description if you're having the same problem I was having.
In my case, PDF attachments would only display as a single image of the first page of the PDF.
The only option I had was to Copy or Save the image. I couldn't open a preview of the full PDF in Mail or tap to 'Open in...' a different app.
Turns out that I had too many apps on my iPhone that can read PDFs, for example, Dropbox, Evernote, iBooks, Kindle, etc. even a Canon app for remote printing.
Removing one of them fixed the issue for me.
I remember this happening before and seeing other threads about this, so I don't think it's specific to iOS 7.
Give it a go and see if it fixes your problem. Hope it helps.

I recently updated my 4s to the new software, iOS7.1. Since then, my Word document email attachements are not opening. When I try and open attachments I just get a message saying "OfficeOpen XML word processing document" on a blank screen. All attachments were opening before the update... so I was wondering;
Is my phone "too old" for this software? (Phone is only 16 months old)
Are the attachments emailed to me, in the wrong format for me to open them?
Or is there something I need to change in the settings so I can open email attachments????

I rely on my phone to email on the run for my job so desperatly need to get it working again!
I also have an iPad2 and have updated it to the new iOS7.1 software and email attachments and everything else is working fine.... just my phone isn't!

I have same problem when I upgraded to ios 7.1. I have done the test that by sending a attachment both in .doc format and docx format but still cannot open the attachement and the message said "OfficeOpen XML word processing document", I have tested another iPhone in ISO 7 which don't have any issues to open.
I don't why Apple still don't doing something to solve it. We are well known that iPhone / iPad is not only for home use, we are use this everyday for work. Please kindly give us solution.

how stupid is this? it's a media player! so, why can't the email app open .wav or .mp3 attachments... i want to listen to my vonage voicemails when they arrive in my inbox. please fix this apple... does the iphone have this same fallback?

You cant "open", in the sense of preview, media attachments as that would require them actually being downloaded onto the hard drive and you cant do that on the Touch.

It sounds like you have a a password-protected PDF. The password was set by the person who encoded it.

Running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron. Email attachments will not open on any emails, they will open in IE. In the past it would only happen on once in a while but then it would just be a gray box where a pic would be. Now no attachments will open.

Check the image exceptions: Tools > Options > Content: Load Images: Exceptions - See [[Options window - Content panel]]
A way to see which images are blocked is to click the favicon (''Site Identification'' icon) on the left side of the location bar and click the "More Information" button.
This will open the Security tab of the ''Page Info'' window (also accessible via Tools > Page Info).
Go to the ''Media'' tab of that Page Info window.
Select the first image and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow.
If an image is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box ''Block Images from...'' then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

That's not good! We definitely want your device to work properly at all times. What email application are you attempting to open? When did the issue start? Do you receive an error message when the application force closes?

I can't access the contents of my email. I can see the message, but the email itself won't open.

I can't access the contents of my email on my i-pad 2. I can see the message, but the email itself won't open.

There are 3 things you can try:
1. Fully close you mail app. From your home screen, press your home button twice to bring up your most recently used apps (task bar). With your finger, hold it on any of those apps until they all start to jiggle. You'll see a minus sign sign on the upper left side of each app. Touch the on the Mail icon. Touch your home button once more to stop the apps from jiggling and then again to return to your home screen.
2. If that doesn't work, reboot your iPad. Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time for at least 10 seconds (hold past the red slider to shut down) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart.
3. If that doesn't work, the last resort might be to delete this mailbox from Settings > Mail COntacts Calendars, then re-install the mailbox.

Firefox 23, attachments won't open or download

firefox 23.0, attachments won't open or download. this includes PDFs, movie clips, perhaps others.
i tried safe mode and it works. so it suggested turning off accelerator, use default themes and disabling extensions. i tried all that and none of that worked.
anybody have any other ideas?

Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Pdf attachments won't open in Adobe Reader 9

After installing Adobe Reader 9, I can no longer open pdf files that come as email attachments. Even attachments I opened two weeks ago no longer open. Error message is from Microsoft Outlook and reads "Application not found." I've found Adobe Reader in my "All Programs" list. After opening the email, I right-click the attachment and save it as a file. Then, I can open Adobe Reader and browse to that file and open it successfully. But NOT by double-clicking the attachment in the email. Any ideas? Thanks!
P.S. I posted this message in the "Adobe Reader 9 Won't Download" then realized it was off topic, so I started another topic. Mea culpa!

I encountered the same problem and tried doing what Suzanne did by right clicking the file and saving it to the computer first and then opening it.
And then after double clicking the saved file windows prompted whether I want to open it with the newly installed Adobe reader 9.0 or with Microsoft Word. I chose the Adobe Reader 9.0 and clicked on the check box asking whether we always want to open this type of file using this program.
I managed to open the file and best of all is after that I was able to directly double click on the pdf email attachments to open it.
Seems like that we need to let windows associate the file type with the program first.

Email attachments pdf already open, but I need that attachment to save it

The past couple of days I received some emails and I was able to save attachments to Quick office for ipad.
Today, I emailed to myself some pdf documents as attachments. To my surprise, their contents showed up in the email on the ipad, even thought the paperclip shows that it is an attachment.
I just received the same emails on my iphone with real attachments. Also on my desktop, all arrived as attachments.
Is there a place on the ipad where this can be set up?

It is still an attachment.
A single page PDF below a designated size will appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message, and the same for jpeg/photo attachments.
As wiith a photo that appears inline or viewed in place within the body of the message, select and hold on the body of the PDF until the prompt to open or save with appears.

Attachments won't open in "Mail" on iPhone

I can't open the attachments that I receive in an email in "mail" on my iPhone, I used to be able to do it but can't anymore, I know I haven't changed any settings.

I'm not running it on Exchange, just regular email. The same will happen, I can see the attachment but when I tap it, nothing happens, it just won't open. I have also tried all types (word, excel, pdf, etc).
At the Apple Store they told me to do a "hard reset" (Press the Home Button and the top button and hold until it restarts) but it's still not working.
If anyone has an idea, please help.
