*.jpeg Folder organisation

I have just bought an Imac (have been a PC user for 20 yrs). I have succesffuly transferred all music and photos onto the Imac using migration assistant, but the "event descriptive" folders (i.e. Wedding, Vietnam 2007 etc. ) we used on the PC to store/ label photo albums with Windows Explorer have all transferred to the iMac and are illogical when it comes to iphoto.
I understand the iPhoto application is deisgned to manage your photo for viewing, and creating albums etc. However, my question focuses on the organisation of the *.jpeg files on the harddrive (i.e. with Finder). In particular, I am interested in the most effective folder structure for organising the pictures files in Finder. Some forums suggest using dates (i.e. 2010/ 01/ 26 file.jpeg). Please comment

If you're using iPhoto then the locations and organisation of the files on the HD are of no matter. iPhoto is a Photo Manager - it replaces the Finder for anything you do with the Photos. Everything you want or need to do can be done with with or via iPhoto.
So, you had a Folder Tree on your PC. You can recreate that folder tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
If you want to edit a photo in another application:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
To access your Photos for use in other apps, uploading, emailing etc:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I have iPhoto configured to keep photos in their original folders and then create events with descriptive names.
This is called a Referenced Library and is not an option to be taken lightly, especially for someone new to the Mac or iPhoto. It offers no extra functionality and has several pitfalls. For more on that see:

  • ITunes 12 - "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised" feature no longer works

Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could help me with an issue I've been having.
Since updating to iTunes 12, the 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised' feature no longer works. When I add media to the library, iTunes doesn't copy it to a destination within my media library. It only works if I turn the feature off, and then back on again.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't use the feature myself, but it works properly in a test library for me.
It could possibly be a permissions issue. Different processes in iTunes seem to make use of either the system or the user account for file actions and it is just possible that which has been used in that case has changed. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for details.

  • Keeping itunes media folder organised slows down itunes

My itunes became very very slow indeed when I updated to version 9. I looked at self help forums and discovered that it should speed up if I unchecked "keep itunes media folder organised". I did that, and sure enough, itunes was cured.
Somebody then said that if I re-checked it, then the folder would be re-organised, and everything would be OK. I did this, and it took all night to organise my library (although it wasn't actually 'disorganised'). However itunes had just returned to being glacially slow.
So why is this happening? I can't find any cure for it, although I suppose one might have been found by now.
This is on a G4 ibook, 1.42 GHz. It ran itunes 8 with no problem at all. Leopard

  • ITunes music folder organisation

On my old PC, when I added an MP3 etc to iTunes it would automatically remove it from the folder it was in and add it to my (iTunes?) music folder. For some reason on my new laptop it does not do this, I have tried with the 'copy to itunes folder' option both checked and unchecked, and it is set to 'keep music folder organised'
Can anyone shed any light on how to get this useful feature back?

Think I've figured out why, the folder I dropped the files into was within the iTunes managed folder so iTunes emptied it when it was organising the folder................. doh

  • How to Convert all PSDs/TIFFs to JPEGs within subfolders (no "JPEG" folder)?

Hello all, I come to you with what I hope is a fairly simple question and I would put it in scripting if needed but I'm not a scripter. I am sifting through many terabyte drives trying to track down all large image files and delete them after making an identically sized JPEG. I can create actions or use the File->script->Image Processor or some other method you suggest.
There is a drive in question with hundreds of folders broken down by a client number and occasionally we'll design something as a psd. Well after each year we like to keep the images but do not need the multilayered psd/tiff files any longer. I would love something to grab every psd/tiff on the drive and convert it to jpg (and delete psd afterward but that I can do by hand). However both batch and image processor have drawbacks that don't allow me to do this. Can anyone help?
Is there a way to make the Image Processor not save in a "JPEG" folder but in the true "same location" as it stipulates. I have bound it to a hotkey and am currently dragging in chunks at a time, then going into the folders, cutting/pasting, then deleting the jpeg folders, then deleting the psds... it's quite cumbersome.
Ideally the files wouldn't go through the GUI so it would be speedier but not necessary. I can use Photoshop or Bridge CS3. I am finding the files by windows searching extensions so if possibly a droplet or something could allow this, I'd use that as well. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

You might want to post this to the Photoshop Scripting Forum.
    Good luck,

  • Customising automatic folder organisation in iTunes

Hi, I have a small problem with iTunes. I usually keep my songs stored in: Music/Artist/Title where the Title is in the form of Artist - Song Name. I want to add the feature of automatically updating the song file location and filename (automatic folder organisation). Is there a way to keep the format I want? Or is there some sort of AddIn which I could use?
    Really appreciate the Help!
Sony VGN3VP/XP   Other OS   (Im using Windows Vista Business)

Is there a way to keep the format I want? Or is there some sort of AddIn which I could use?
    No.
iTunes uses Artist -> Album - Song.

  • Itunes 8 and undoing the keep itunes music folder organised

I have recently got an Ipod and have quite a large muisc collection that i have imported into itunes.
Unfortunately I thought it would be a good idea to tick the box that says, keep the itunes folder organised, mistakenly believing that it would help me to categorise any loose tracks that i hadn't got round to manually placing within an artists folder, also i thopught it would make it easier for me to locate and remove any duplicates.
Unfortunately i didn't realise that this simple little box tick would seperate all my compilation albums, soundtracks and various albums and take all the different artists out of those, already in a folder together as an album, and create additional folders with artist name and then a further folder with the album name within.
Luckily i have since discovered that by sorting itunes by album name and then selecting all the tracks, clicking get info, clicking options then selecting yes to compilation it will put those tracks back into the folder that they came from.
The problem has arisen where I have ripped a CD previously and though i named the artist, then the album in the folders I hadn't got round to naming the tracks so i now have a folder that is filled with lots of track 01, track 02 etc and as i don't know which folder they came from I can't change the title without listening to each one, so is there any way I can get itunes to just put everything back where it was and where i was happy with the system that i had?

In short, no. There is no undo option for this feature. Back at about iTunes version 4 this could result in tracks being deleted as ones with the same information would overwrite those that had already been renamed. The current versions avoid this by appending " 1", " 2" etc. to filenames that would otherwise clash.

  • Switch to a new PC, but can't keep iPhone app folder organisation when sync with iTunes

I have just switched to a new PC. When I connected my iPhone to it, I have chosen to "Transfer Purchase" in iTunes. Then I go to sync for the apps. I got a msseage warning me that the apps on the iPhone will be replaced by those in the iTunes library. I didn't mind for that since I have already do the "Transfer Purchase" and I won't lose any apps for this step. But I thought it would not keep the folder organisation on my iPhone and I will need to manually group all apps again if I continue the process. I have nearly 300 apps. Are there any ways to keep all the folder organisations for this case of switching PC?

Thanks. But what I really want is to import the folder organisation from iPhone to iTunes. It is tedious to reorganise all my 300 apps again.

  • Photo organised in folder -- organised in album ?...

    Hi,
I have a lot of photo already organised in my computer into folders and I tried to transfer them in my N8.
--> impossible to have them organised into album in the nikia photo viewver, I 'll have to select  one by one each photo to recreate albums.
it is going to take hours for thousand of photos and it can all disapear if I might have to do a hard or soft reset.
    I am missing something ?

    Hi Everyone,
Yes, I also belong to your fan club ! When do we get a photo/image viewer or browser that will allow us to see only from a specific folder. I would be happy if at least I could restrict to one drive or memory for example only showing images on "E" mass memory and not those on the removable micro SD card. But this annoying gallery browser just find its anywhere. There are photo and image hider applications but that is not the idea in my case, as is not to hide because then you have to unhide/hide back and forth. The idea is not to see for example imported icons, contact thumbnails, etc.
Apparently I did find one file browser that will allow you to see the image as you browse the folder. I have to purchase it to try it out. It is File Browser from Migital available at OVI Store.
I hope we get a solution to this soon. It is becoming a very annoying problem.

  • Can iPhoto keep my photos folder organised?

    Hi All,
I'm new to Mac so apologies if I'm asking a really silly question here. I've had a brief look on the iPhoto support vids but can't find an obvious answer.
I want to know if I can use iPhoto to automatically organize my Photos folder; for example, putting images from specific events into folders named accordingly, in the same way that iTunes can do with tracks and albums etc.
    Cheers,
    Joe

Where are these folders? On the HD? No. In the iPhoto Window? Perhaps, depending on exactly what you are tryng to do.
iPhoto is designed for folsk who want to organise their Photos not their files. Import your pics to iPhoto and it copies the files to the Library. You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - and anything you need to do can be done via that window. And I do mean anything: edit in iPhoto, edit in another app, email, print, share to other applications, upload to Web sites and so on.
How the files are organised on the HD is of no matter as iPhoto tracks the relationship between what do in the iPhoto Window and the location of the files.
So, how do you access the files?
I generally recommend to new users that the best thing to do is import 100 or 200 photos to iPhoto and explore. It's a very capable app, but there is a learnign curve and it may not be right for you.

  • Folder organisation in FCS

I've been editing for some years and am familiar with the correct way to organise my FCP system by putting the projects folder on the boot drive and the media on my 2nd drive.
However as i've started using the other Studio apps more and more i've been unable to find any info on where one should put all the files and folders from these apps. The Color render file for example is currently on my boot drive and seems to contain huge files.
Should i do what i've done with FCP and put only the project files on my boot drive and shift all other stuff over to the folder i called FCP documents?
What are other people out there doing?

Basic strategy is no video material on the boot drive and do not keep your backup files on the same drive as your project files.

  • Change iTunes folder organisation

Currently, my iTunes \ Music folder is organised by Artist then Album then Song.
Can I change this to organise songs by Album then by Song?  Or, in order to use the 'Artists' tab in iTunes, do I need to store it by Artist somewhere along the line?
    Duncs

The physical organization on the drive? iTunes has only one way to do this, no options. <Media Folder>\Music\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext>. (N.b. Album Artist is used in place of Artist if non-blank.)
If you mean within iTunes, explore the options in different views. Songs, for example, will let you sort on the Album column. Other views may have additional sorting options hidden under View > Show View Options (CTRL+J).

  • Windows to OS X file and folder organisation

    Hello,
I have a question regarding the finder. MS Windows Explorer arranges files and folders by always placing folders at the top of the list. Is there a solution that allows OS X's finder window to arrange folders and (in column view) this way?
    Thanks in advance!

    rshelton
No, you can't do this with the Finder. But you can with Pathfinder, it's an alternative to the Finder with rather more features.

  • ITunes no longer organising music folder???

    Hello,
I've had my iTunes lib on an external for years now and no problem. I just updated to the newest version of iTunes and now everytime I add a new album it no longer adds that album to the correct artists folder. YES, I do have the "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organised" button. That is why I am so perplexed! I have restarted and nothing... I have selected an entire artists 3 albums that I have and done apple-i and changed all the artists name so that they are literally identical and still the music folder has the older 2 albums under the artists name and the recent one i've added all by its lonesome???
    anyone else having this problem?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I've tried that... When you have that box check (keep folder organised) it USUALLY keeps your folder organised based on what you have in the "Artist" field, and indeed 99% of my iTunes lib is that way but every new album I add is not taking???
It is as if I don't have that box checked. That is the best way to describe this problem. The problem being that I do - and it refuses to organise by artists which is going to leave me a very messy music folder!
    anyone else with this problem?

  • Image Processor and JPEG destination folder

I wonder if it is possible to change the name of the JPEG destination folder when using Image Processor?
I organize all my folders with a specific date structure.  Whenever I use Image Processor to create JPEGs, the folder is called JPEG.  Then I have to rename the folder with the date structure.  Is there some way to include the original folder name in the JPEG folder?
    "Save As JPEG
Saves images in JPEG format within a folder called JPEG in the destination folder."
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Lynnea

I believe if you download the Image Processor Pro script from Russell Brown's web site and install it.  You will find it installs under menu File>Automate.  It is like the Image Processor but is more powerful. You can save as many different sized jpegs for a image as you need you can name the folder or folders you want them saved in.   You can add, remove and turn ON/OFF the tabs in the center section.
