JPEG format can't be read!

Hello all...
I'm suddenly having a problem seeing JPEGs of my photos on my iBook. I downloaded these photos off of my Kodak Easy Share camera, and was able to edit them in iPhoto and view them in Preview for ages. Because I didn't want to use my memory on my computer, I stored them on a USB memory stick. I've viewed them on this same computer using these same programmes since then without problems, but today for some reason when I plug in the stick, and click on one of the photos I get a "Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." message. This seems weird as I can see a thumbnail of the picture.
So I tried copying the photos onto my desktop and then importing them into iPhoto. When I do this, I get an 'Unreadable File' message.
I can open the pictures if I change the 'open with' to Firefox or another webbrowser. However, then I can't edit the photo. I tried opening the photo in the webbrowers, and then clicking 'save as' and resaving as a JPEG, but I keep getting the same messages again when I try to open the newly saved version.
I hadn't reformatted anything on the USB key or used it in another computer since I created the pictures originally. Does anyone have any idea of why this is happening and if there any chance of getting to view the photos on my Mac again?
Thank You!

If you haven't found a solution yet try the following:
1 - download the Embed sRGB Profile.app.zip file fromToad's Cellar and unzip it.
2 - locate one of the files that you're having trouble in the Finder (if it's been imported into iPhoto then look in the Originals folder of the iPhoto Library folder) and drag it onto the file you downloaded.
3 - now try to view and edit that photo in iPhoto.
If that fixes the problem then the problem was no profile or a damaged color profile embedded in those files. You can then proceed to drag all of the original files onto the application to embed the sRGB profile in your entire library.
Before starting this make a temporary backup of your iPhoto Library folder just in case. Better safe than sorry.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Dmg. or img. using built/format can't be read

When I built/format I have a dmg. file that can't be read in my DVD player. How can I do a img. format ? I only have the Video_TS folder and Audio_TS folder + the dmg. file from my DVD Studio Pro project.
    Merci,
    Jean

For a DVD to play in your DVD Player, you need to put the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders only, not the dmg. The Audio_TS is empty, but DVD players look for it anyway.
So after you build, you can then use format and navigate to the folder where the Video_TS and Auido_TS folders are (you can also use build and format if you have not built the project, usually I build first and do a quick check in Apple DVD Player to catch any things I may have missed before burning a DVD)

  • What file formats can the AEBSn read?

I have two Windows PCs which will be connected via Ethernet to the AEBSn and a 2.16GHz MacBook(N-Enabled). I am planning on backing them up to an 500GB AirDisk, but I know that the AEBSn is not compatible with NTFS. Does anyone know if Windows can read HFS+ or if there is some other solution?
    Thanks,
    Sammy

    Sam,
You are mixing up disk file systems with network file systems.
Format the Airdisk as HFS. (disk file system)
The PCs will access it as a network device using SMB.
They won't know anything about the alien disk format - they only see the network file system which they recognize.

  • Can Elements 7 read CS4 file formats  ?

If CS4 has been used to capture HD and develop in-progress sequences (with basic video and audio transitions) and thus Premiere Pro project files *.prproj can they be imported/read by Elements 7 for further work (e.g. on another computer by someone else)?
For basic video editing tasks, if CS4 formats can be imported/read in Elements 7 are there any specific aspects that may get lost or cause issues (and what are these)?
And can I assume that the reverse, importing/reading Elements 7 file formats in CS4 is possible and fully transferable.
    Windows XP SP3

Unfortunately, my tests between PrP and PrE were for earlier version:
    PrP2 & PrE4.
What I found was that PrP2 could Open PrE4 Projects, with only a few glitches. PrE4 yielded an error, "This Project was Done in PrP2. Use That Program to Open This File."
These were simple Projects, with only a few Titles, Transitions and very limited Effects. There were no Themes, etc. used.
In PrP2, there were a few things that did not translate from PrE4. One Tilte had animation and text on a Path. These did not come in.
The PrP2 Project was even less involved, but nothing would Import.
As Steve says, the Assets will translate well between the two NLE's, but editing work will possibly be limited in one direction, but nothing will Import in the other.
    Good luck,

  • Why won't my camera raw photos (.CR2) import? Jpeg won't either. Just installed Lightroom 5. Says files can't be read. Please help.

Trying to import photos to Lighroom 5 from my lexar memory card. Says files can't be read. It will not import any file, CR2 or Jpeg. Will someone please help me? I'm not good with complicated lingo either. It has to be simple for me to understand. Thank you in advance.

Are you using a card reader or trying to import via the camera? If importing from the camera then you can expect problems, switch to using a card reader.
If you are already using a card reader then  the card itself may have problems. Copy the contents over to somewhere on your hard drive and try importing from there. Make sure you regularly format your card in the camera. And switch to using a different card to see if the problem continues.

  • Format for photos has changed to aspx instead of jpeg. Can't open them

can't save photos or documents under jpeg format. This just started a few days ago. When something is saved in photos it shows the aspx format and the computer can't recognize it. I'm not able to open anything new.

Is that with Outlook Web Access?

  • When i download my pictures to a usb memory stick in jpeg format other computers cannot open them can someone help me to sort this please thanks from a new iMac user

when i download my pictures (in jpeg format) to a usb memory stick they cannot be opened on another computer ie not a mac, do i need to convert the file so that other computers can read it thanks Sam

    Sam,
Format your stick with MS-DOS (FAT32) format. I use camera CF cards as memory stick and a good practice is to regularly format them: it deals with defragmentation effectively.
JPG is a standard, regardless of which application writes it and is readable by all applications supporting JPG.
Make sure you properly eject your usb stick when you take the it out of the usb port: it makes sure the OS closes all open files.

  • I blog and cannot convert my ipad photos to a jpeg format on my ipad so that I can publish them.  is there a way to do this ?

I have a travel blog and want to take my ipad when I am away but cannot add my photos (I have the photo converter kit) to my blog. Can someone tell me how to do this?  I want to convert my photos in my ipad to a jpeg format so I can add them to my blog when I am on the go!

The iPad and most digital cameras (besides pro and pro-sumer versions) take pictures in jpeg format. Are you using some specialty app or a pro camera and RAW?
What bloging platform are you using? If Wordpress, I suggest using the Wordpress app since it allows for uploading photos.
What version of iOS are you using? It's possible that you are using the Web admin interface for your blog and since the iPad doesn't have a file system per se, on older versions of iOS Safari does not allow for uploading photos that way. iOS 6 allows you to take a phot or select from the Photo library.

    Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 13/13.1, your export choices are in the Publish+Share section of the project. There are several choices and sub-choices.
Example: Publish+Share/Computer/and then a list of choices under that, such as, MPEG, AVI, AVCHD, XAVC-S, Windows Media, QuickTime, Image, Audio.
And each has Presets which define the export settings. Adobe offers default settings which are usually optimized ones. But, it also allows you to customize the preset selected. You do that by clicking on the Advanced Button of the selected preset and customizing the settings under the Video Tab, Audio Tab, and, if applicable, Multiplexer Tab.
From what you wrote, I thought that you might be asking about exporting a video with a video codec = Photo JPEG.
To do that you would to to
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    QuickTime
with Presets = either the one for 4:3 of 16:9 as appropriate for your project,
and then clicking on the Advanced Button, and then the Video Tab under the Advanced Button.
Then selecting Photo JPEG for the video codec field.
Tip: The QuickTime choice is not seen unless you scroll down the list of Computer choices. Use the thin scroll bar to the right of the Computer choices.
Please explore Premiere Elements 13/13.1's Publish+Share/Disc/DVD with standard or widescreen preset for your creation of the DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc.
The Premiere Elements timeline destined for this choice could consistent of supported photos and or videos.
    Please consider.
Any questions and need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.

Is there anyway to add music to an iPod (from iTunes) running on a an older G4 Mac with OS X 10.3.9 if the iPod has been formatted on a newer intel based Mac running Lepord? The error I get on my G4 says that the disc I've inserted has volumes on it that can't be read by my Mac OS software.

The iPod needs to be formatted using the APM partition format if the Disk Utility is used to erase it. Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier will not access GUID formatted drives.

Windows will only be able to open these if you have Word 2007+. Older versions of Word, for example Word 2003 would require a compatibility pack.
Perhaps you can try 'Saving As' a different file type instead?

  • What is the best software programs that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format i.e.  Windows) ?

    Hi guys,
I’m new to Mac and have a MacBook Pro Lion OS (10.6.8 I think !!!) with Parallels 7 (Windows 7) installed. Can someone please tell me what is the best software program that I can use to read, write and modify data / files on external HD (NTFS format) from the Mac OS ? I heard of Paragon and Tuxera NTFS. Are they free ? Are they good ? Are there any other software programs out there ? I heard that some people have issues with Paragon.
    Thanks.

Your best bet would be to take the drive to the oldest/compatible with that drive Windows PC and grab the files off, right click and format it exFAT (XP users can download exFAT from Microsoft) and then put the files back on.
Mac's can read and write all Windows files formats except write to NTFS (and in some cases not read) so if you can change the format of the drive to exFAT (all data has to be remove first) then you will have a drive that doesn't require paid third party NTFS software (a license fee goes to Microsoft) for updates.
Also it's one less hassle to deal with too.
