JPEG Import

Importing JPEG Images from from a Nikon D 200 show in finder thumbnails black bars on two sides, whereas Imports from Canon G5 don´t ? The bars seem to appear in "Finder" thumbnails an "digital images" only but not in Aperture after import. Any idea how it comes ?
Thanks for help
iMac G5, 2,0   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2Gb RAM, 9600

These were downloaded with Image Capture? It looks like Image Capture (and maybe other bits of OS X) assume 4x3 proportions for camera images - I see the same with pretty well all dSLR images if the camera uses the same 3x2 proportions as 35mm film.

  • JPEG import in chronological order

This is just to share my experience with jpeg import and provide solutions to a problem that I raised in a previous post regarding the order in which jepgs are imported in the timeline.
All pictures are in listed chronological order.
If import is performed directly from the desktop of the MAC, then, the jpegs will be imported in the timeline, irrespective of the original order. Two successive imports will not even end up the same order...
If jpegs are imported in the browser of the project (left window) in which all captured clips should be listed, and then draged as a wole into the timeline, thr resulting order is fine. It is also possible to have all pictures in a folder, drag the folder to the browser, and then drag the pictures that are within the folder all together (apple-A) in the timeline. Again the order is fine.
All this providing that as sugggested previously, naming is correct (see previous posts)
    Hoping this will help
    Thanks to Michael for helping.
    Have a nice one.

    I love it too, Bernard.
It was said to me in the late 1970s by an old farmer (in Wales) who had a lovely sense of humour. I've never forgotten it.
The farmer originated from the 'Black Country' - an industrial area of the English West Midlands. I expect he picked it up from there.
I've Googled it - but no success.

  • How do I delete the jpeg from raw+jpeg imported images?

    Hi,
Back in the day, I shot lots of images using raw+jpeg and imported them into Lightroom.  Now I realize those jpegs add no value and I'd like to recover the disk space that they're collectively occupying.
Is there a good way to:
    1. Identify all images in a catalog which have raw+jpeg?
    2. Remove just the jpeg for these images?
    Thanks!

I'm very hesistant to take the chance on any 3rd party script.
Just so ya know, what the deletion feature in RawPlusJpeg does is ultra simple:
    1. Identifies extraneous jpeg files.
    2. Presents them for you to review.
    3. Deletes the extraneous jpeg files, if you approve. (puts them in the recycle bin if possible).
It does nothing to the database nor anything else.
You sync folders with 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files separately' afterward, which is what sets the database right.
The only potential for trouble is the criteria for determining which jpegs are extraneous.
It has no direct access to the database, so what it does is check for jpegs with same base name as raw (which *must* be present in catalog, and on disk), that aren't in the catalog, which includes the jpegs associated with RAW+JPEG (imported as a unit), *and* any jpegs that were imported separately, but subsequently removed from the catalog, or had never been imported.
So, what it does will be the perfect thing to do, *if* you first synchronize folders (with 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files separately' checked) to pull any jpegs in to the catalog that were previously imported separately, but may have been inadvertently removed from the catalog (or had never been imported), before invoking the delete feature of the plugin.
Note: You must do that for any manual procedure too, or you will have the same problem, except in the manual case, you won't have the benefit of the plugin checking your work, and presenting the files to be deleted, before you commit.
It's your call, obviously, and to save Geoff the Kiwi from pointing this out: the plugin comes with no guarantee, warranty, or any other kind of tea.
Consider backing up catalog and photo files before doing this maintenance, whether manual, or plugin-assisted.
In my opinion, the plugin-assisted method is much safer than the manual method, which is the only reason it was written, *not* to save steps, although it does that too. For example, you can not, with the plugin, delete any jpegs that do not have a corresponding RAW in the catalog and on disk, period. - unless there is a bug of course, but there probably isn't , at least not one that would change the aforementioned assertion... - it wouldn't take much of a bug to cause it to barf, but it would take a big bug to cause it to delete files that weren't on the list, etc...
Seriously, I don't think you have to wait for Adobe on this one. I wouldn't (I didn't - my catalog is all clean now!...).
PS - there is *very* little recorded in the database about the jpeg sidecar - it's existence upon import (when "as a unit") - that's about it. Most of the funny business about updating that we were fumbling with above, stems from the software (and the person at the keyboard), *not* the database. Syncing folders with 'Treat JPEG files next to raw files separately' checked, once the jpeg sidecars have been cleaned up, *will* set the database straight!
    Cheers,
    Rob.

  • Bug? Raw+Jpeg imports from an iPad mini

    Hi Everyone
I've come across a very strange importing issue with iPhoto 9.6 (910.29). I'm always on the go so I use my iPad mini as photo storage until I gain access to a computer. I’d take my pictures on the camera and then I’ll plug the sd card to the iPad and copy everything that is on the card (via the Apple Lightning to SD card Camera reader).
    I take pictures in (1) RAW only, (2) RAW+Jpeg and (3)Jpeg only.
When I import from the camera to the MacBook Pro directly via USB:
all the 3 formats are properly imported.
When I import from the iPad in iPhoto:
The pictures shot in (1) RAW only and (3)Jpeg only are imported properly
But when I import the (2) RAW+Jpeg ones, iPhoto will only import the Jpeg versions and will give me the error message "Unreadable file: The following files could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognized format" for the RAW versions of the same image.
Here is what I do not understand:
    - The RAW format that my camera uses (.RW2 for Panasonic FZ1000) is supported so there shouldn't be any issue.
    - (1) RAW only pictures are correctly imported
    - all formats are correctly imported when importing directly from the camera.
It seems this bug only affects RAW+Jpeg imports from the iPad?
Has anyone come across this issue before and if so, is there a fix or workaround? It is not that much of an issue as the RAW only files can still be imported from the iPad but I find this issue very curious.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Not sure about the fix but the workaround is to not shoot Raw+Jpeg, which is pretty pointless anyway, as importing the Raw to iPhoto means it creates a Jepg preview, so you end up with Raw +Jpeg+Jepg...

  • Raw+Jpeg import shows 2 files

I have run into an issue when importing photos from my IPad.  When I am working from remote I import my images to my IPad using the connection kit and then import them when I return to work on them in Aperture.  Since upgrading to Mountain Lion and Aperture 3.3.2, the files are no longer attached to each other and show as separate images.  This is creating 2 images for every RAW+Jpeg file I import.  Is there a way to get Aperture to join the two images back together?  Is anyone else running into this issue?

Did you check your RAW+JPEG import setting? (see below) It sounds like yours was set to Both (Separate Originals). Set it to one of the first two to have them joined.
I don't know of a way to join them after import (nor separate them either).

  • JPEG import into After Effects 6.5/7 over Xsan

We are unable to import any type of .jpg file into After Effects over the Xsan file system. When attempting to do so we only receive a slew of bogus error messages and the files will not import, tiff files or other formats are fine. This issue plagued us back in Panther and we scratched the Xsan file system and went to plain apple share to get around this.
We went back to Xsan with Tiger because we were told the issue had been resolved, it hasn't been fixed, and now we're back to square one.
Being an effects department, all of our photo librarties are jpeg so we have to convert everything to tiff to get it to import into AE. Apple told us to contact Adobe and Adobe tells us to contact Apple. Has anyone else experinced this joy?
P.S. Has anyone had trouble importing .tga files into Photoshop CS2 over Xsan, we are also having this issue?

    Xserve G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Xsan 1.4

I brought in an Xsan expert to set this system up and I do not know what block size he set, I will check with him. We are running Xsan 1.4 w/10.4.7 on all of the clients and servers and we still have this issue.
I am hoping the block size is the default but if it isn't at least that would be a good explanation. It took five days the last time to do this and I am not ready to do it all over again, especially when it cost so much to bring someone out to do it and they said that the issue has been resolved since previous versions of Xsan.

  • Image sequence of jpegs import into Premiere Pro CC 2014 out of sync!

Ever since I left CS6 to CC 2014, image sequences as jpeg files do not properly import into Premiere in sync anymore.  I use Blender 3d to export render scenes as jpegs then convert them to h.264 mpeg4 video clips in Premiere.  What happens is that the images upload into Premiere's project tab out of order, even though they are correctly ordered in my hard drive.  Improper naming conventions are probably ruled out since their files extensions are _000 types, and I never had a problem importing sequences in CS6 anyways.  Still image default duration is set to 1 in the general preferences.  Does anyone know what is suggest?  Thanks.

Good point, I am importing as separate jpegs each set to one frame, so it's not an image sequence as I thought.
My indeterminate media timebase and sequence are the same (29.97fps), though I have to say that even if they were different I don't see why that would be a problem.
Here is a screen shot of my images just after uploading them into the project tab, it is seen from first to last that file numbers appear out of order such as 066, 054, 072, 058...ect:
Is there anything else I could try?

  • IPhoto jpeg import quality

I have noted that when I import a photo, especially dark pictures with lots of rumor, from a jpeg file into the iPhoto library it is displayed differently in iPhoto then if you open the original file with, say Preview: it is much darker.
If I leave the photo untouched in Iphoto and then export it, it remains the same photo as the original. But if modify the photo in iPhoto, say I rotate it and then export it, it will be as it is displayed in iPhoto, even if I open it with Preview.
Does anyone know why this is so? Is iPhoto automatically adjusting pictures as you import them? Is there an option to disable this?
    Regards
    fabrizio

I don't know of an option in iPhoto that 'automatically adjusts' images, but if it does that it is unacceptable if you can't turn it off.
The new iWeb does exactly that and has messed lots of people's images up by 'enhancing' them on import - there is an option there to disable the 'feature' which IMO should be off by default.
My guess is that you problem might be due to embedding of a ColorSync profile altering the way the image is displayed when exported/imported.
Under Advanced preferences there's an option to embed ColorSync profiles (though it says on import). Try importing with and without that. It may that if selected the original is still unaltered but a copy with the new embeddeed profile is what you get to edit.

  • JPEG import fail?

Scanned two photos to Tiff files, worked on them in PSE 8, and then also saved as JPEGs via Preview. This on a Snow Leopard 10.6.5 disk. Imported the folder with the four into iPhoto 6 on the SL drive.
The Tiff files are fine, but the Preview created JPEGs show up in iPhoto as black rectangles. Click on one to edit and you see a high contrast dim photo.
The original scans were to black and white.
Took the same folder over to my Tiger Disk and they imported and show up just fine in iPhoto 6 there.
Was it the HP scan to B&W. PSE 8 cleanup? Or Preview save as?

    LN
    Thank you.
I had run into this problem once before some time ago and couldn't remember what or why. This may have been the first time I scanned a photo directly to a B&W (Grayscale) TIFF. Removes too many options working in PSE.
I'm curious because the JPEGs worked in iPhoto 6 on my Tiger drive (same photo files) but not on iPhoto 6 on the Snow Leopard drive (upgraded from Tiger maintaining apps and files).
Here's the chain. Photo HP scanned to Gray scale TIFF on SL drive. File edited in PSE 8 on SL and saved as as two different PSE TIF files. TIF files saved as JPEGs in SL Preview. Four files imported in iPhoto 6 SL.
Again, I buy your explanation, just curious about difference between iPhoto 6 on Tiger and SL, working with the same exact files.

  • JPEG Imports Fail – What now?

When importing certain JPEG files, I get an error message, “The following file could not be imported (the import failed).” Or sometimes “(it may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).” These are not specifically photos, but art that has been saved with the .jpg file extension via Photoshop. Oddly enough, some of the JPEGs that have been saved via Photoshop import just fine into iPhoto. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be causing this? Thanks for any and all help.

    Jeff:
You might try running Resize! on those bad apples (yes, pun intended) to create new jpg files, full sized and max quality, to see if those will import OK.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Jpeg importing problem

    Hi,
I selected about 1,400 pictures from my iPhoto collection. I exported them to a folder. I then went to import them into 3 different video editing programs and over 200 of them could not be imported. Two of the three programs were iMovie4 and Final Cut Express v.1. I would appreciate any help on why the 200+ pictures could not be imported.
    Thank you

    Hi,
I don't have GraphicConverter and since it is shareware and money is tight right now, I tried to find a freeware image converter on the internet for the Mac. I didn't. I remembered that I have Photoshop Essentials. It came with my Canon scanner. I installed it and looked to see if it had a converter of some type in it. I saw that you can import a file, work with it and then save it to what you want. I thought that I had already done that with the Nikon files. Anyway, I tested it. I imported one of the Nikon images into it and saved it as a jpeg- even though it appeared to be a jpeg already. Bingo! It worked. It imported into my video editing program. I selected two other files from the Nikon shots and did the same thing. I change the name of the picture and then save it as a jpeg in Photoshop Essentials 2. The two files imported into my video editing program. I then went to the two original Nikon files that I had imported into Photoshop Essentials 2 and changed the names of them- leaving the jpeg extension on to see if they would import, they did not. So, as you said, there must by some kind of Metadata with those files. Bringing them into Photoshop Essentials 2 and saving them as jpegs fixed it. Because of what happened, I just went through my approx. 4,000 pictures and selected about 1,400 again for a new family DVD. I created folder and exported 1,446 jpeg pictures into it. Then I opened by video editing program and imported the folder. All 1,446 pictures came in. I didn't try it with FCE and iMovie, since I the program I regularly use is Adobe Premiere. I may try it later, but I am pretty confident that if the pictures can be imported into Adobe Premiere, they can also be imported into FCE and iMovie(unless there is a number limit.)
All this has taken place over several days. I am glad that it is figured out.
    Thank you for the help.

  • Damaged / Unsupported Jpegs "Importing jpegs"

I am using MAC OS X (Leopard) with Lightroom 1.3
When I import my jpegs from my external hard drive some do not import, some import but have an error message saying "Damaged or unsupported file", and some import just fine. All photos were taken with the same Nikon camera and all of these photos open just fine in all other programs.
What causes this and how can I fix the Problem?
I have tried re-importing these photos with no success.
    Thank you for your help,
    Mike

    Michael-
I recall reading some on this in the forum, but your search is likely to yield results quicker. Be sure you're searching wide, not just this thread. IIRC, it was some Leopard thing. Intel or PPC? Are you running the latest version on your Mac?

  • RAW+JPEG Import Question

I switched from Windows/LR to Mac/Aperture last year and have a question about importing RAW and JPEG files.
My camera (Olympus EM5) finally has RAW support and I have been shooting RAW+JPEG. I got a preset that I like to apply to the RAW files during the import. But I don't want the preset applied to the JPEG files. What I have been doing is importing the RAW and JPEG separately.
Is there a way to import them all together and have the preset only applied to the RAW files on import? Thanks.

What import settings have you tried? What configuration do you want the library to have (Both RAW + JPGs as separate masters or only one of them as master?).
If you want the RAW as master try importing as Both (RAW as master) to see if the preset is only applied to the RAW.
If you want both as masters, that is you're importing Both (Separate masters) then I don;t believe it will be possible to restrict the preset to just the RAWs on import. But instead of importing the images in two separate batches it might be easier to import both and to apply the preset after import using Metadata->Batch Change. It would be easy to filter just the RAW images to apply the preset to.

  • Jpeg import into fcp

    Hello,
I have to import jpeg into Final Cut Projects and I would like to understand globally what to consider. Is there any tutorial?
One project is 1920 x 1080 Pro Res
    The other 720 x 576 Pro Rex
My graphic designer offers me jpegs in 300 dpi.
What to tell him to get the best jpeg for my project? I want to add some motions, too (in Final Cut, not Motion)
    Thanks a lot,
    Paula

It depends on the aspect ratio you are going to use in your project.  If you are using DV NTSC 4:3 you should use 720 x 540 (no moves) or 1800 x 1350 (for moves).  If you are using DV NTSC 16:9 then use 853 x 480 (no moves) or 2133 x 1200 (for moves).  In additon, I would convert my JPEGS to TIFF or PNG as well as create the above image sizes using Aperture or Photoshop.  As for the tutorial, I would take a look at what Lynda.com has to offer. For my money, there is no better site that offers that quick lesson which will get you started right away with what you want.  There is a cost but I believe it is worth the charge.  There are any number of tutorials on YouTube for FCP which will help you with image size and FCP as well.  Hope this helps.

  • Aperture Raw & Jpeg import Problem

I'm on the current Aperture and face the following situation: I have a memory card containing photos shot partly as jpeg-only and partly as jpeg&raw.
No problem one should think since Aperture has the option to only import either raw or jpeg if there are more than one format per photo. Unfortunately, that is not working. If you select raw only, which I do for the raw&jpeg photos, Aperture does not import Photos which only have a jpeg-version at all.
This is not consistent with the options name and at all renders the whole import options useless in my case.
Am I missing something or is Aperture having an issue here?

I shot raw and jpeg since I was on a trip through the US and my Macbook broke so I had to use my iPad to upload the photos to my blog. Unfortunately the iPad software (iPhoto etc.) does not allow to change the resolution and with that the filesize of the photos. Uploading of hundreds of photos of more than 2 mb over public wifis on campgrounds etc is simply not possible, so I used the following workaround: Set raw+minimum jpeg size as file format and upload the small jpegs to the blog while keeping the raw on the memory card for later use.
That's why I shot both raw and jpeg and why I have photos shot as jpeg or raw only (before the laptop crash) and both raw and jpeg (after the crash) on the same memory card.
I'm Aperture user from the the very first version (when it was like hundreds of Euros), and I sadly cannot say that I'm surprised of the lack of support for non-standard workflows.
Well, so be it. Thank you for your help!
