Jpeg preview icons are jagged in the Finder

I'm going through my images, archiving some, tossing others. I've come across a folder full of jpeg images where the icons are so jagged you can't see what the image is. Most of my other jpeg preview images are okay, and when I Get Info (from Finder) the preview shown for the sus images is also okay.
I've asked in the Apple forums whether I could ask the Finder to go through all these images and update the icon, but no joy so far.
When I open an image and Save As in Photoshop, the icon is okay – but being jpeg, I assume the image will be recompressed, and therefore the quality (already borderline from my 10-year-old 2 MP camera) will be degraded further. Also, I don't want to convert to Tiff as I want to save space by archiving the original jpeg just as it came out of the camera.
So, how do I "reicon" these preview images in the Finder so that they look normal, but without recompressing? Can Photoshop update the preview of a jpeg image, but not the image data?

HI Frank,
You've certainly covered all the bases but if you haven't done so try this. Grab your Tiger restore disk and insert it in to the optical drive. When it mounts double click it. When the window opens follow this path: System/Library/Core Services/CoreTypes.bundle. Select the CoreTyples. bundle and then press Cntrl + C. Then go to a clear space on your Desktop and press Cntrl + V. That will copy that file to your Desktop. Now, double click your MacintoshHD icon or use a Finder window and follow that same path. Remove the original CoreTypes.bundle and replace with the one you just created on the Desktop. Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions... Reboot... my fingers are crossed that this works.

How do I tell Finder to go through all these images and update the icon so that it is not pixellated?

I try and get by with the minimum amount of software on my system, but thanks for the suggestion of GraphicConverter.
Are you saying that Finder cannot "reicon" icons? Most of the icons are okay, it's just these 100 or so in one folder that have gone haywire.
If I open the files in Photoshop and "Save As" the icons come good, but I am afraid that by doing so I would be re-compressing the images, causing a slight degradation. Also, if I "Get Info" and look at the preview, the preview looks okay and and the icon is larger than what is displayed for the 128 x 128 maximum icon size. So Finder does know how to display the icons properly, but it has forgotten how to in the case of the images in this one folder.
Is there no way to tell Finder to go through these images and "reicon"?
Another question: where are the preview icons stored? Inside the image?

  • Why were the colour icons taken away from the finder and itunes sidebars and and replaced with grey monochrome shade icons. It doesn't make any sense.

Why were the colour icons taken away from the finder and itunes sidebars and and replaced with grey monochrome shade icons.
Have apple rectified this yet ?
It doesn't make sense to me why they changed this. Can anyone tell me the reason for the lack of colour ?
On another note, can the the sidebar be changed back to the right hand side in preview (when opening PDF's). It has always been on the right in snow leopard and tiger.
It seems to me that their has been too many unnecessary changes in the Lion operating system.
    Thanks.

You'd have to ask Apple, no one here would know - we are just users like you and aren't allowed to speculate on these forums. You have quite a bit of company though - many people preferred the color.
And, I've not found a way to put the sidebar back on the right side in Preview, but maybe someone else can chime in with that.
I much prefer the sidebar a la sinistra

  • I have just updated to ISO 8 and my app icons are not displaying the correct icon but just a generic icon. Anyone had a similar problem?

I have just updated to ISO 8 and my app icons are not displaying the correct icon but just a generic icon. Anyone had a similar problem?

That happened to me for a short period of time after I updated. It didn't do it with all apps, but it did it with a few here and there. Try a few basic standard troubleshooting steps. Close all apps and reset the iPad.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
You can also try resetting all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
Hopefully it will be something simple, but don't rule out restoring the iOS software, if nothing else works, but start with this easy stuff first.

  • All my icons are missing from the Menu bar.. help!

    Hi everyone,
Today I noticed that all my icons are missing from the right hand side of my screen. There is no Wifi, Bluetooth, clock, or Spotlight! How does this happen?!?
    Does anyone have any solutions?
    Thanks, Timmay

    Hi
One reason for this behaviour is installing a Front Row hack that lets you run Front Row on an unsupported Mac. If this applies to you see Dr. Smoke's Uninstalling the Front Row hack FAQ.

It is the strangest thing. I click on the project and it is there with all the stuff and cuts, etc., but no clips in the event!
    Thank you.

    You u r right.
Thanks I figured it out. It was the sort by preference toggle UP TOP for clips. I was fabulously ignorant of it till this AM. Thank you very much for answering.

Thank you for your reply. After a lot of fruitless searches, I hit on a page that offered the same wisdom you did. I feel like rather a fool for not knowing that. Grr. I really appreciate your answer, and that you didn't end it with "dummy." Cheers to you. Hope someone does something kind for you today.

  • I need to move home and refresh icons back to the left. I uninstalled Firefox 4 and reinstalled Firefox 6 and the home and refresh icons are still on the left. Help! (I have tendonitis and this makes my wrist move too far.)

You can right-click on the "Home" button and choose "Customize," then drag all of the icons (including Home and Reload) to where you want them.

  • Maverick has messed up my computer. Slow scrolling in I photo. Bookmark icons are blue all the time and not marked with the company symbols. I cannot find out how to solve this.

I switched to Mavericks two weeks ago and have had nothing but troubles. Scrolling in I photo is slow and very inaccurate. When I click and drag a photo the ones above it all flicker, making it hard to find where to put it. My bookmarks bar Icons are all blue. Before they used to show the symbol for the company they represented. Now I click on one, it changes to what I want, then a few minutes of hour later, it goes back to the blue ball, which I hate. My font size is different with every page and I have to click Zoom in all the time. I tried adjusting it in Preferences in Advance settings on the right, but this does not solve the problem permanetly. I have one web page, a hockey one, which tries to load, then I get either a black page or a white one. Driving me nuts. I need some help. Been to Apple at the store, talked to them on the phone for four hours last week. Rebuilt the I photo library with no luck. Would appreciate any help. Please Thanks. I even keep a fan behind my computer to keep it cool, that is how much I look after this baby. Some say it might be Safari? Not sure. I have little computer experience, so please it you are kind enough to reply, do not use tech talk or short forms as I will not understand any of it.

    Rick,
I have a few of your issues as well: 1) Safari popular icons are all bue making them very hard to distinguish from each other. 2) My font size is also different with each page / window.        What I have been able to find out is that in the Maverick OS - Apple removed one size of display resolution 2048 x 1152. Whether this is the cause of my 27" screen clarity & font size issues, I do not know - but it seems like a contributing factor.  Maybe help is on the way - maybe not. Cheers

  • Previews don't play in the finder (or with Quicklook)

    Seems like a Quicktime problem.
I'm in column view in the Finder. I click on an AVI or other Quicktime-compatible file, and nothing shows up in the preview or Quicklook. All I get is that spinning "loading" image, but it never loads the video.
I have Perian installed. I removed Perian, but the problem persists.
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

I also tried this (deleting the Quicklook cache) and no luck, still the same issue.
I did a clean installation and this works
However, I did again the installation and imported my USER profile in FULL via the assistant when you first configured Snow Leopard (using an FULL BACKUP copy and/or Time Machine Backup) and then problem reappears
I have reinstalled DivX, Desinstalled RealPlayer deinstalled Perian and still the same issue. I cannot see the Thumbnails or the Cover Flow of the video/movie file such MPG, MPG, AVI, WMV but it works for MP4 I have for my IPod
I finally gave up and left this last installation and I did not have the energy to migrate my data, emails, settngs, etc manually.
By the way, the upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 towards Snow Leopard 10.6 was smooth but the performance was awful specially after installing 10.6.1. With the upgrade I had the same issue with my USER account or with any, NO THUMBSNAILs for most of my videos enough though they are played correctly in Quicktime and Quicklook....
    Any help????

  • Getting Document Icons to appear in the Finder

I wanted to change the icons that would appear on the .tiff files that my Cocoa multiple document application creates. I did the following: I deleted the reference to the old .icns file from my XCode project. I trashed the old.icns file and emptied the trash. I created a new .icns file using two tiffs: one for the icons and one for the masks using Icon Composer. I put the new .icns file in the project directory. I added it to the project in the resources folder. When I click on it the project shows it in the editor correctly. I edited the project target properties so the UTI is public.tiff, the Icon File is the correct name of the .icns file including the .icns extension. I checked the package box to make sure the .icns file is included in the project bundle. I clicked on the .icns file in the project and hit command I to look at the file info for the .icns file. Under the Targets tab the Target Membership is shown as checked as a member of the application. I cleaned the targets. I moved the applications from the Build and Debug folders to the trash and emptied the trash. I restarted the computer. I logged out and back on. I restarted the finder. I rebuilt the project debug target. When I run my application and save my document as a tiff on the desk top it has the generic icon but if I get info for the file it still has the now extremely non-existent old icon as its preview. If I move the file into a folder it has the old icon. It looks to me like the finder is the culprit here. It seems to be retaining the old icon somewhere.
Any more things I can try?

    Hi Warren -
I imagine you already tried this, but just to be sure, did you change the default .tiff app in Finder? Does that change the icon? If so, what happens when you then change the default back to your app?
If the above doesn't help, what happens when you change the Bundle Name and Executable File name of your app, then set the default .tiff app to the "new" app? Not saying this is practical if you've already distributed your app, but it might help to know the result.
Here's some misc info that may give you more ideas: [http://ask.metafilter.com/67832/Changing-filetypes-icons-in-OS-X].
Btw, we have at least two or three experts around here who will probably know exactly what to do. I'm only filling in until one of them shows up. So if none of the above is useful, stay tuned.

  • How do I get the icons to display in the finder sidebar?

For some odd reason, the icons in the finder sidebar on my MacBook Pro are not displaying (that means that they are not there at all, not just grey).
I have already deleted the plist file and restarted to no effect.  any suggestions out there?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
