Jpeg Quality Slider Question

Greetings All!
I am new to Flash CS5 and I have created a slide show. I am trying to reduce the .swf file size for faster loading. I have been trying
to adjust the size using the jpeg quality slider, but it doesn't seem to function whether I set it to 0 or 100 or anywhere in between.
Publishing always generates the same size swf file.
Can anyone point me to my error? Thanks for helping.
Jay

Thanks Kglad! That was exactly what I was missing.
That made a huge difference!
I greatly appreciate your help.

  • What is stepbystep procedure to make finest quality slide show in iMovie?

    After spending many hours of trial and error, like many others it sounds like, and after much time reading through this forum I have concluded that maybe one of the experts on iMovie, and this recurring question, could come up with a step-by-step guide on how to prepare photos for a high quality slide show in iMovie starting from downloading the digital image from the camera.
    I find myself very confused as to how to prepare the photos in Photoshop (step by step here would be great also - how do you format the photo, size, pixal ratio, resolution, RGB or CMYK, ) and how to import them into iMovie while maintaining the highest quality possible. Then how to export to or import into iDVD. I think anyone who is attemping to produce a slide show wants to end up with a visually pleasing final product. No jaggies or blurriness. It seems to me that there should be, from start to finish, a fairly simple guide that would make it easier for all of us.

    Maybe it's me, but... scoobie... i don't think your reply has anything to do with her question lol. I believe she's saying she is having trouble figuring out how to do something, not that the program is crashing.
    Anyway, I'm starting a similar slideshow project. I think it's easiest to simply edit the photos in iPhoto. Photoshop is on a different level from iPhoto and obviously has capabilities iPhoto lacks, but I think it should be fine for just editing digital photos.
    One of the things you said was "how do you format... resolution"
    I don't think iPhoto can change the resolution of a photo like photoshop can, but since you want to make the FINEST quality slide show I assume you'd want to scale the resolution up... and although photoshop can do that, I don't think you'll see a significant increase in quality. It won't look anything like if you had actually taken the photo at a higher resolution.
    As far as importing pictures into iMovie goes, that should be pretty easy. If you click on the "media" button in iMovie, and then click on the "Photos" tab on the upper right of the window, it will display your iPhoto library the same way it would display it in iPhoto (organized by albums). You can then drag whatever photos you want to include to the "timeline" at the bottom of the screen.
    I'm not sure what to tell you about pixel ratio and RGB vs. CMYK....
    The last step, exporting to iDVD is just as simple as adding pictures... just click on the "Share" menu at the top of the screen and select "iDVD". What you do from there depends on what kind of final product you want... and I haven't actually used iDVD so I would just be guessing on that part lol.
    Also, I suggest going here: http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/imovie/index.html and looking at the tutorial. I viewed most of the movies there and they were helpful.

  • Jpeg quality setting, noise settings and artifacts

    I am having difficulty having work accepted by iStock - even at full size at 100% jpe
    g export, there is still some. I have cut way back on all enhancements.
    I would like some advice to expoering clean images and where i find jpeg setings - or are their similar ones to those  in CS5. I have tried saving for web in CS% to no avail. I do get some accepted - about 30% and i have started to use a program called deNoise from Topaz - would appreciate suggestions on all the baove.
    Thanks
    Greg Summers

    Aren't these stock agencies a little paranoid about noise?
    Lightroom 3 images may look a little noisier than LR2's at the same slider values. So you might need to add a little more luma noise than before.

  • Decreasing JPEG quality sometimes works

    I've done about a hundred flash files with imported jpegs and
    have had no trouble getting the global jpeg quality setting to
    affect them. Now I've got a similar project of ten fla files that a
    contractor did and I can't get the Jpeg quality setting to affect
    the published files.
    The point is that I know this setting can have an effect on
    imported jpeg bitmaps because I've done it so many times now.
    Now, in my own projects, all the jpeg bitmaps are set to "use
    document default quality" and the global setting affects them. The
    contractor's projects have the same settings but the global setting
    has no effect.
    The one thing I'm suspicious of is that her bitmap properties
    point to originals that are on her computer, not mine. Could the
    fact that her sources are unavailable have anything to do with
    this?
    Rob Mack

    Okay, here's the answer. My previous several thousand jpeg
    images had been saved with the progressive switch turned on.
    Evidently, Flash compresses bitmaps in non-progressive jpeg
    format. If the asset is already in this format then flash defaults
    to using the original file as is. However, if the jpeg asset is in
    progressive format then Flash has to recompress it.
    The effect is that progressive jpeg files can be affected by
    the project's global jpeg quality settings but non-porgressive
    jpegs can't be affected by the settings.
    How this affects a user depends on what you want to do. In my
    case I'm doing dozens and dozens of files that are much like slide
    shows and it's most convenient to adjust compression in the project
    settings to get the file size down. For most other users, they've
    gone to a bit of trouble to get a jpeg image "just right" and don't
    want the global setting to affect it. In most users cases they'd
    want to save non-progressive jpegs, in fact since the project
    setting will skip them this is the better way to go when mixing
    jpeg and png bitmaps.
    For someone in my position where you need to be able to
    recompress the bitmaps, you either save jpegs with progressive
    switched on or you save the bitmaps in PNG format. Overall, using
    PNG will probably cause less overall image damage but it increases
    your storage requirements quite a bit.
    So, what if you saved the jpegs in the wrong format? Maybe
    the best choice would be to go back to photoshop and set up a batch
    action to resave everything with Progressive on or off. Then in the
    FLA file you can select all the bitmaps and update them in bulk.

  • Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?

    Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?  Changing the quality of the print changes the size of the saved file and thus impacts the speed at which it is moved on the internet.  But other than size of the file, what is the advantage of changing the quality?

    I have no idea why you would want to do anything
    Some people want lower quality to reduce file size for different reasons
    It is an option - if you do pot want to do that do not use that option

  • DVD Quality slider

    Premiere Elements 6 and 7 - I am trying to burn a DVD. According to the documentation there is supposed to be a Quality slider that appears when you uncheck the "Fit Contents to available space" checkbox. No such slider appears. It does not matter whether I am burning to a file or to a disc - no slider. The file is only 2 minutes. There is a Disc menu.
    I had this same problem in PSE 6, but the quality was very bad (cross fade transitions very noisy, blocky looking moving footage). It looked like the invisible slider was set all the way down by default.
    So I downloaded a Trial version of PSE 7, opened the same project - and there was a Quality slider. I burned a test DVD with the slider all the way up and it looked pretty good. So I bought PSE 7, installed it, ran another test - OK. Then I did a few edits, added some Ken Burns style pan and zoom moves and a title. Now again there is no Quality slider. It looks better than PSE 6 but not as good as it should. I have tried DVD-RW and DVD+R media, restarting PSE 7, changing presets, reloading the old project that worked before, rendering the timeline, no luck.
    This feature really needs to work, as the only reason I bought this software is to make DVD slideshows. I have tried making an MPEG2 file and using other software to make the DVD from it, but it does not look good and takes hours for the other software to transcode it. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks for your fast reply Paul LS.
    No, the slider is not greyed out. It is just gone, even with Fit Contents to available space deselected. I have selected DVD. The project is only 2 minutes.
    I use JPG originals that are scaled to 1600 in the maximum direction by Picasa. This seems to work well even when I zoom in to 200%. My system is XP Pro with 2G of memory, core 2 Duo at 2.4 GHz.
    The only thing I can think of is perhaps PRE 7 is using a system codec for the slider function and it got over-written by some other software. I use Individual Software Passages Express, Pinnacle TV, Magix, and Picasa. But there were no installs or updates between the time the PRE 7 Quality slider was working and when it disappeared. Just some edits and photo scanning. It is very odd that when you make an MPEG 2 file or a MOV you get pages of options, various audio quality settings, CBR vs VBR etc. but for DVD all you get is a Quality slider.

  • Best way to make a high quality slide show from still images

    I know that this may have been asked before but i am trying to create a high quality slide show of my still images that will look great on a TV. I have tried imovie, idvd, and iphoto and i am not happy with the quality. i do own FCP. can anyone walk me through a way to create a high quality slide show and then burn it on IDVD.
    any info would be appreciated

    i usually lay everything out in FCP. if you're going to use music or voice overs, lay down your audio tracks as appropriate. then cut all of the stills to you audio to get the timing just right. don't do any motion graphics in FCP. then, when you're satisfied with the cuts, send the entire sequence to Motion and do all of your motion graphics (grow/shrink, spins, throws, fades).
    i find that all of the motion effects can be done more easily in the Motion application. this has been my preferred workflow for over a half-dozen slideshows now.

  • Poor JPEG Quality in 6303i Classic

    Is there any way to change the JPEG quality ratio in 6303i Classic. The 3.2 MP camera's excellent details are totally lost due to lossy JPEG compression (the phone, by default, saves with 60% quality ratio)
    Or is there any other way to retain the quality of photos?

    Try CatchAsBitmap:
    http://www.republicofcode.com/tutorials/flash/as3cacheasbitmap/
    Also check whether the quality is good when viewing it in actual percentage, are you changing the dimensions of image after loaded?
    Someother Snippet to smooth the image:
    _urlRequest=new URLRequest("pathtofile");
    _loader=new Loader;
    _loader.load(_urlRequest);
    _loader.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, function(e:IOErrorEvent):void{ trace(e) });
    _loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,smooth);
    private function smooth(e:Event) {
    var bit:Bitmap = e.target.content;
    if (bit != null) {
       bit.smoothing = true;

  • Export JPEG quality must be chosen twice

    Mac OS X, Lightroom 1.4.1: In Library mode, choose export, choose JPEG and quality. Then photo is opened in Photoshop and once again you have to choose jpeg quality. OK with only a few photos, but tiresome when exporting many. Is it possible only having to choose jpeg quality once (in Lightroom).

    The High setting gives you the same file size as the original file was. The medium setting results is aboutg a 50% file size reduction. The max selection greatly increases the file size but I'm not sure it increase the image quality to any noticable degree.
    The image I tested resulted in these file sizes sizes: Original 1.4MB, High 1.4MB, Medium 774KB, Small, 402KB and Maximum, 4.6 MB. The pixel dimension of the photo remained the same in all files.
    Personally I couldn't see much difference between all of them but them my eyes are on the down side of the "hill". This website gives some interesting insight into jpeg compression: JPEG

  • Jpeg quality when exporting

    Is there a way to adjust the jpeg quality when exporting or editing? I can change the image size, which is helpful, but it would be nice if I could change the jpeg compression in order to reduce the file size. Thanks!

    Hi Stanleydad,
    i noticed from you other post that you are using AOL.
    In iPhoto Preferences, have you chosen AOL as your email client.
    Once you do this, when you choose an images within iPhoto and click the email icon, iPhoto will open your AOL mail client and attach the photos with the size you chose in the export dialog.
    You might even want to make a new post that is all yours so it is easier for us to address all your needs.
    Give us the version of iPhoto you are using, the Mail client (AOL) and any other information on what you want to do and we will tell you how to accomplish it.

  • Quality slider fine adjust gone?

    You used to be able to hold the Control key while adjusting the Quality slider to set the quality to an exact amount, an integer percent. Is this gone in QT 7? Without this, it's hard to repeat the same value again.
    Thanx,
    Russ

    So far I do not see how to bring back this function.
    Seems crazy they would remove something so benign.
    AudioHijackPro will capture system audio with a high degree of control.

  • Jpeg Quality setting

    I have tryed to find a reasonable value for jpeg quality setting when exporting images for use like sending to a lab for printing.
    Comparing the Photoshop scale of 0-12 with the Lightroom scale of 0-100 on some typical images I found the following:
    PS 6 is similar to LR 50
    PS 7 similar to LR 60
    PS 8 similar to LR 65 (62-69 gives same value)
    PS 9 similar to LR 75 (70-76 gives same value)
    PS 10 similar to LR 80 (77-84 gives same value)
    PS 11 similar to LR 90 (85-92 gives same value)
    PS 12 similar to LR 100 (93-100 gives same value)
    Choosing "max" from the dialog in PS results in quality 10 (unless changed manually to 11 or 12), the value I normally use when converting to jpeg, and this seems to equal the value 80 in LR. I noted that the scale in LR is not linear, the resulting file sizes changes in a limited number of steps.
    My conclusion from the test is that a setting of 80 in LR should be sufficient for all practical purposes when exporting a jpeg file (assuming that there is no significant difference between PS quality 10-12 for a file that is "final" and need no more adjustments).
    Any views on "normal" setting of jpeg quality setting in LR for various purposes?
    Sigge

    To me it would depend on the purpose. I do a lot of printing at home, so I don't use jpegs for that. But, for high quality prints done externally, I believe a lot of people resize their files in Photoshop and then sharpen for the print job, then save either to jpeg or tiff. Tiff is the safest because it avoids the lossy compression of a jpeg. If your resize is successful and you need to save to jpeg, then I imagine the highest quality setting would be desirable.
    For the web, you would also need to resize, using a resolution of 72 ppi, to fit your desired display size, then sharpen, then save the image. Again, is there a reason to not use the highest quality when saving a web image? Speed of display, I suppose. But there's a tradeoff.
    I use PBase as a public web gallery and they have a nifty feature: you upload a file and they create three display sizes. When they're done you can tell them to delete the original. When I do that I save jpegs in LR to 80 -- it makes for faster uploading.

  • Flash CS4 Jpeg Quality publishing problem

    Hi there I'm trying to publish a .psd or .png that animates, but when I go to change the Jpeg Quality settings to change it to anything other than the 80% it's set to it makes the animated picture disappear when viewing the swf. (I'll eventually be doing this to many animated pictures and will need to use the global jpeg quality setting)
    Can anyone try and open my .fla file and see if they can change the jpeg settings and get it to work, then I'll know that I'll probably have to reinstall Flash CS4.
    Thanks in advance.

    I encountered the same problem when changing the quality setting in the Publish Settings from the file menu. I was able to get it to work by changing the quality setting in the library. I can't explain the problem. Have you tried, (if your project allows you) to use a PNG instead of a PSD image?

  • File Export JPEG Quality Maximum

    I have imported a 148KB image 857x1280 at 100ppi into iphoto. When I File> Export at Maximum JPEG quality I get a 475KB image. Same dimensions, same ppi. Can someone explain why please?
    Thanks

    But JPEG compression isn't just about "pixels being thrown away," and it's relative to the original. What could be happening in this case is:
    Original was probably saved at a level like JPEG Medium (around 60), since that's pretty common. Data is thrown out, so quite a bit of pixels and color info are downsampled and it drops to 148KB.
    Now you open it up and save it out at JPEG Maximum. You are telling it to preserve as much as it can, so it carefully makes note of all the existing data and writes it all out. But the problem is, the existing data was turned into worse data before, so all you did with JPEG Maximum is make it faithfully record a lot of garbage. The reason the file size went up is probably because JPEG cannot use many of the shortcuts it used to save the file out the last time, so even though there's a lot of lower quality data in it, it must still be recorded faithfully (taking up more space) because you set it to Maximum.
    This would happen whether you were working with pictures, audio, or video. Rough example: If you take a cheap old webcam video with low resolution and chunky compression, and you add it to a full HD movie, the file size is going to be change to huge HD size, not tiny webcam size. Or if you take a low-bit MP3 and resave it as a high-bit MP3 or as a standard CD file, it is going to get bigger; the sound is no better but the file must grow.
