JPEG + Raw Seperated during Import

Hi!
I'm just starting out with Lightroom and ran into a problem.  Something makes me think it might be a bug, but not sure so I thought I'd ask.  When I imported files (did the copy) into LR, I created a folder structure based upon Year\Date\<original filename>.  These folders contain JPG + raw files (NEF).  Initially, I had a setting wrong on my camera that just started the filenames at 0 when I deleted all the pics from the card.  So, basically, I have dsc_0001.jpg, dsc_0001.jpg, and then another set of duplicates for the next day.
When I imported it into Lightroom, it worked fine because of the folder structure.  However, I started reading that using dates for pictures isn't the greatest thing.  OK, so, I deleted everything and re-imported based on events.  So, I did...
Event\<filename>
This worked well until I ran into my duplicates.  Lightroom adds a -2, -3, etc to the find of the file name.  So heres a snapshot of the directory...

Now in Lightroom, it will show the duplicate JPG and NEF files because of the rename.  The "Treat jpeg files next to raw files as seperate photos" is not checked, but I think Lightroom is getting confused after the rename.  If I do a regular folder structure of "Year\Date" so it doesn't rename the files, everything works as expected.
I even tried to rename the file (in Lightroom) with the date-sequence number, but had the same results.
Is there a trick to get it to import both files, but treat them as a single photo after the rename because of a duplicate filename?

If you are talking about including capture date in folder and/or filename, I think it's a pretty great thing.

This is just my opinion, but I've found photo life to be a whole lot simpler by making sure all filenames in catalog are unique. It's not a requirement, but you're encountering one of those occasions when you'd not have the problem if filenaming convention assured uniqueness.
So, consider a filenaming convention like:
{date-time}_{camera-id}_{camera-file-number}.{ext}
I realize this makes for long filenames (and I've been trying to lobby Adobe for the support needed for shorter (shortest) unique filenaming which also assures alphabetic order same as date-time order, but so far to no avail), but has the advantages:
* alphabetic order same as date-time order.
* all filenames are unique
* "sequence number" associates image to original in-camera number, in case that should come in handy.
* it's informative.
* you never have to change naming when exporting (although you can if you want).
* you can determine which source photo based on exported filename alone.
I do:
{date}_{photographer-id}_{time}_{camera-id}_{camera-file-number}.{ext}
So things are naturally organized how I want upon export or when viewing in OS..., even when multiple photographers shoot with multiple cameras.
Anyway, "Events" may be best handled as collections and/or collection sets (and/or keywords...) instead of folders, which would be another way to solve your problem.
PS - If you're more of a minimalist, consider shortest unique naming convention (if tip needed, do tell...).

  • No preview images from raw files during import any suggestions?

Lightroom will not display preview images during import of raw images. Any images in other formats display fine but with raw images I get a gray window the size of the preview image and the words "preview unavailable for this file". Adobe tech support has been no help they don't what is going on. Running Windows XP 64, Lightroom 3.3. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem when pluging the camera directly to PC. But if I use the card reader, everything is normal. Win7 64bit.

  • Separation of RAW and jpeg formats during import?

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to Mac and more specifically iPhoto 11.......having fun though!!
Does anybody know whether iPhoto has the functionality to separate or create sub folders for both RAW and jpeg picture formats during importing?
This would save a fair bit of time manually moving photos between folders!!
I believe Aperture has the ability but I'm not ready to upgrade just yet.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Craig

    No it doesn't.
    Some possibilities:
    1. Use Smart Albums to separate them
    2. Remember that when you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a Jpeg preview. So, now you have two jpegs of the same Raw. Do you need to shoot both Raw and Jpeg?

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

  • RAW JPEG PROBLEM  I'm new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

I’m new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW+JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?

  • Can "jpeg+raw" imported single file be split into jpeg and raw files?

I manage to choose to import my jpeg and raw pictures as single jpeg+raw files accidentely. What means with this format? can I split this "jpeg+raw" pictures into jpeg and raw again? If you edit a jpeg+raw picture are you just working with the raw file, I mean I saw that I could change the exposure on the file which you only can do on raw files. Is it a bad idea to import jpeg and raw pictures as a single file? I really don´t understand the properties of this "jpeg+raw"-file
    /Magnus Lightroom rookie

With RAW+JPEG, the JPEG is only used for the initial Library view, prior to generating previews from the RAW file. Once you have generated previews and/or developed the image, the JPEG is unused. The edits you make won't affect the JPEG at all. It is, however, still tied to the RAW as metadata, so deleting the JPEG will flag your image as having problems (and list it as "missing" even though it's very clearly in your catalog). Tuning off the option to handle RAW+JPEG together in preferences won't fix past combo images, but it will avoid making this idiotic mistake in the future. After turning it off, export your metadata to the RAWs, then delete them from the library (not the disk) and then reimport them without the JPEGs. Peace will rule the world.

  • RAW files look corrupted with color streaking during import

During import in Lightroom about 25% of my files look corrupted (with color streaks, etc.). The RAW images upload perfectly in iPhoto on the same computer but for some reason will become corrupted in Lightroom. I am able to delete the corrupted images in the LR Library and reload them with about a 50% success rate. I've tried different memory cards, cf importers, etc. Only an issue in LR. Sometimes they export with the streaking and other times they export perfectly fine. Even if they export fine it makes it impossible to edit in LR. Below is an example of how the image appears. Any answers?

Raw files have a camera-embedded JPG.
I would guess the files are corrupt, LR is showing you this corruption, while other programs are only interpreting the JPG and hiding the corruption.
Can you upload one of these photos that iPhoto shows as ok, while LR shows corruption?  Upload one to www.dropbox.com <http://www.dropbox.com>  and post a public download link, here.

  • Shoot in RAW but to import JPEG and RAW

im using Nikon d7000. i just shoot in RAW only but i want to import both the JPEG thumbnail (which contains camera adjustments) and the RAW file, is it possible?

    Hello Heny,
by the way, what do you mean by appropriate import settings?
Sorry for being somewhat sketchy, I simply meant the "Raw&Jpeg Pairs" brick in the" Import Settings" panel, also set the Adjustment Presets to "none", if you want to see the original camera settings in the Jpeg.
If you import pairs, you need to tell Aperture, which of the pair you want currently to be the master - that you can change in the "Photos" menu: "Set Raw as master" or "Set jepg as master", for each selected image individually.

  • Shot in JPEG+RAW but Photos only displays JPEG after Import

    Hi all,
Just got back from a trip, I shot in JPEG+RAW on my D90 (still learning photo editing and processing so I figured I'd give myself options and shoot both) but I noticed that the import from the memory card only displays the JPEG file. I never had the issue with iPhoto (it would import both) and the RAW files that were in my iPhoto library (and converted to the Photos library) are still displayed. Did I miss something with the import from my memory card to Photos?
    Thanks for the help!

  • How to view JPEG of JPEG + RAW pair

I import JPEG+RAW and designate the RAW as master. How can I view the original camera-produced JPEG? There doesn't seem to be any way to toggle that.
    Thanks in advance.

Go to *File->Photos->JPG as Master* or else right click on the image and select *set JPG as master* from the contextual menu.
Had you designated the JPG as master the wording of the commands would have been reversed, that is it would have said* RAW* as master.

  • Can't transfer many photos in "JPEG/RAW" from iPadAir to iMac -10.9.5 iPhoto 9.5.1

Can’t transfer many of my photos— in “JPEG/RAW" format from my iPad Air to my iMac (OS 10.9.5; iPhoto 9.5.1).
As I have done many times before when I travel, I upload photos directly from my camera to my iPad Air, and then later transfer them from my iPad AIR to my iMac.
The photos uploaded just fine to my iPad Air several weeks ago-- but when trying to transfer them to my iMac, I keep getting the following message: “THE FOLLOWING FILE COULD NOT BE IMPORTED. THE FILE IS IN AN UNRECOGNIZED FORMAT.”
And then I get a huge list of photos that wouldn’t transfer. They are listed like this:   _DSC4302.ARW
    Please help.
    thank you,

    Hello Terence:
    Thank you for the suggestion.
I did exactly as you stated trying to import 5 photos from iPad Air into a new iPhoto library - and got the same result.
The message was: "Unreadable Files", followed by the list:
    _DSC4918.ARW
    _DSC4918.ARW
    _DSC4917.ARW
    _DSC4917.ARW
    _DSC4919.ARW
Not sure what to make of this.
They seem to be on the iPad-- though when the transfer is attempted in iPhoto, no thumbnails show. Each photo is shown as an icon of a photo with "RAW" at the bottom.
Any other help would be appreciated.
    thank you,

  • Why is aperture 3.4 crashing during import after upgrade?

After running a typical upgrade from Software update on my mac I have had the problem of importing files into Aperture.
Exactly what happened and equipment used.  Used SD 45mbs 16gb SD card to import RAW images after a shoot.  This has been working and tested the day before update.  Was prompted to update to Aperture 3.4 along with another update for OSX.  After reboot I launched Aperture and was prompted to update library.  Next SD card was inserted, pictures showed up as previews, all were selected and checked to import all.  Application crashes see below.
    What I have tired.
    removed application
    removed preference files
    reinstalled application
was prompted for upgrade of library
once done inserted SD to import files
Same issue files show up but they do not import and same report comes up
have attempted multiple SD cards with no resolve.
Able to use disk on another computer with no issue.
    Someone please help

What Aperture version are you running exactly? Aperture 3.4 or 3.4.1? The 3.4.1 update has some important bug fixes. If you did not install  the last update, I'd recommend to update.
Some posters had problems with the image capture preferences, after upgrading to 3.4, and that caused troubles during import. Try if removing the image capture preference files helps:
To remove the image capture preferences:
If Aperture is running, quit Aperture,  and log off and on again.
Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/  then hit return.
In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture  something.plist  remove them too.
    then try again.

  • Canon 5D Mark 2  Raw Files wont import.

My Friend has a Canon 5d Mark 2 and the files will not import. it says it's an unrecognized format.
now when I shoot with my Canon rebel Xti in raw it will import them. does anybody know if apple will support the canon 5d mark 2 raw files in iPhoto? Or is there something i did not check in prefs to help import?

Hi. I've got a slightly different problem. I've just upgraded from Canon 20D to 5D and although the RAW files and JPEGs DO both import, the RAW files are no longer labelled 'CR' with the image number. There's just an image number, which duplicates the JPEG file number alongside. I've tried to find a setting in iPhoto9 prefs and also on the camera to add the CR suffix, but have not resolved this. I would like the RAWs to import with the CR tag, as with the 20D. Am I missing something...?!

  • Using Lightroom as RAW Converter without Importing Images

    Hi-
I have a question that I can't find the answer to anywhere. i have images on my desktop that I'd like to convert from RAW to JPEG withOUT having to import them into LR.
What I mean is that I'd like to be able to open a folder, right click on an image, and convert it from RAW to JPEG in the folder. Is this possible? If it matters, I have Windows 7,
    Thank you,
    Kelly

Kelly, in order for Lightroom to see the raw file you have to import it. It's not a big deal, just a simple step in the process. Also realize that if you remove the imported raw files after development and exporting the jpegs, you will lose all the settings the images had and will have to start from scratch should you want to make adjustments later, unless you save the settings to XMP files.
