JPEG's actual size in CS1

Hi,
How do I find the size of a JPEG when I'm working on it (I know how to once it's saved). When I look at, for instance, a 5 MB JPEG, it will read something like 27 MB on the size at the bottom of the window. I understand the size reduces, but is there a way to tell while I'm doing it?

27MB would be the actual size of the image.
5MB would be the compressed saved size.
this is why you don't want to work and save and work and resave a Jpeg its lossy it throws away lots of data.

Preview 'Actual Size' isn't working properly

This is a long-standing minor irritation, but I would love to resolve it if possible. Preview opens an image and fits it to the screen size which is fine. If I then click Actual Size, it gives an image which is twice the actual size! I then have to do a single Zoom Out to get the real 'actual size' (which is still bigger than the fit-to-screen size).
This happens very often, but not every time (some images seem to work ok). Most images I work with are jpegs.
Anyone else notice this? Is there a solution?

What you report is normal.
An image at 150 dpi will display at half the size as one at 72 dpi or
72 dpi will display at twice the size of one that is 150 dpi (actually 144 is twice 72 but close enough)

You are making the mistake of thinking that Preview is an image viewer.
I am NOT talking about the 'preview' that can be chosen when printing a document, I am talking about the APPLICATION Preview, the one with the dock icon that looks like a couple of photos with a jewellers loupe sitting on them, and with a menu bar that has Drawer, Rotate, Zoom
The Print Preview and the one in the Dock is one and the same. It is not an image viewer, that is just a feature. Preview is primarily a Printer Preview Utility. I have already said that. It can show documents and it can also show images.
Because it can show images you think it should be like an image viewer like Photoshop. It is a Print Preview application designed to show how an image will appear before it is sent to print.
The lower the DPI - the larger the actual size will be across your monitor's screen.
It works in DPI resolution to talk to the printer.
Photoshop works in absolute pixels X pixels to talk to the screen. They are doing two different things and you fail to see that. There is nothing wrong with your Preview application. Apple's Preview is the same thing as Photoshop's Print Preview.
Rather than lock on doggedly to your misconception, put it aside for a moment and take a fresh look.

IPhoto on yosemite cannot send actual size photo

After upgrading to Yosemite, iPhoto is not sending pictures in the Actual size even after selecting that option under share -> email -> Actual Size (full quality). On the email, the message size is cut by half of the actual size of the picture. Can someone fix the bug?

I think, the problem is Mail. After sharing the photo to Mail in iPhoto, the Mail window will open with the image size set to "Medium". Have you checked the Mail window, if the size menu is set correctly?
Setting the size to "Actual size" will send a jpeg with the correct pixel size, but a slighter larger compression. A previously 2.5 MB jpeg will arrive at 1.9 JPEG.
If you want be sure, that Mail will transfer the original image file without any additional compression, export the original image file from iPhoto, use "File > Compress" and attach the zip file to the mail.

Scanning actual size hi res images

I am cross-posting this message since I'm not really sure where I should post it.
I recently switched from a PC to the macbook pro and am using an HP photosmart C7100 series scanner. I cannot figure out how to scan images at actual size using this scanner and the macbook. (I had no problem doing it on the PC with the same scanner.) I have it set to scan to iPhoto.
What I actually need to do is insert scanned images at actual size into word docs. When I try inserting these scans from iPhoto into Word-- they are much larger than the original. I have tried changing scale and resolution settings and at one point was able to get the image the right size-- but the resolution was terrible. I really need a hi resolution but actual size. (Just for a little more info, I know it is possible to size the image down in Word- but for what I am doing, I absolutely need the image to be the exact size it really is- and these are not standard size images, so resizing in Word has not been an easy task.)
I have tried everything I can think of with the scanner and iPhoto. I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any tips?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think you're doing anything wrong. What resolution are you scanning at and what do you mean by actual size? Actual size is relative. A 4x6 photo scanned at 300 dpi will display much bigger on screen than a 4x7 photo scanned at 72 dpi. Both are 4x6 if you print them at their scanned resolution. If I were to scan a 4x6 photo at 72 dpi it will show "actual size" on the monitor since most monitors are at 72 - 90 dpi in resolution. However it will not print very well at 4x6 since there are only 72 pixels per inch in the photo. The more pixels in a photo the better it will print. I scan all of my prints at 300 dpi.
In Word you can resize the photo exactly by double clicking on the photo and entering the dimensions in the Size section of the Format Picture box that comes up. Otherwise you'll be sacrificing print quality.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Welcome to the Forums!
One tip might be to try Applications > Image Capture instead of iPhoto. IC allows full control over resolution, etc. I've never scanned to iPhoto, so if that allows full control as well then this tip won't helps.
However, I think this is an issue with how MS Office on the Mac handles images.
On my MBP, when I take a pic from a 4 megapixel digital camera (2288x1712 pixels) and insert that into a Word document (Insert menu > Picture > From File), then copy it, switch to Photoshop and create a new document based on the clipboard size, what I get is not the original pixel dimensions, and the size changes depending on how I scale the pic in Word. On the other hand, when I move the same image to my PC laptop and do the exact same thing, in Photoshop I get a 2288x1712 blank file in Photoshop no matter what I do to the image in Word.
So, unfortunately you may be stuck, unless someone else can offer a better suggestion. Word is really not the app of choice for desktop publishing, image manipulation, etc., but it's unfortunate that the switch impacted you in this way.
One possibility, assuming you still have your licenses for Windows and MS Office - use BootCamp to run them on your MBP. Clearly not an elegant solution.
If you can stand something of a learning curve, you might consider Mac desktop publishing software, something like the free, open source scribus, or Adobe InDesign.

Any way to change bookmark view to Actual Size on all bookmarks in a PDF at once?

There's over 100 bookmarks here, and they're all set to Fit Width. I want them to be set to Actual Size. Do I really need to go one bookmark at a time, and then click through all the steps, to change these buggers, or is there a simpler way to do them all at once without losing the bookmark's anchor?

TS3276 the images (attachments) are automatically resized (smaller) when I send them to a customer. My email screen does not show a drop down menu box where you can leave as actual size. Is there a setting elsewhere that can be set.

Any suggestions on problem I have. I receive images, say a file that is 3 mgs through email on Safari mail and when I try to resend it or forward it or any other larger file, when it sends the file is reduced by about 1/3. My screen does not show and drop down menu with a feature to keep actual size or reduce that is suggested when I looked up solutions to the problem. I can't find a setting anywhere in mail that I can change to make sure my files are kept at actual size. I figure a setting got changed -don't know how - but it happened about a month ago. Caused problems as I work in graphics can't send files to clients as they come out too small. Any suggestions on how to fix.

How can I print a pdf in the actual size with a page border? (2 pages per sheet preferred)
I usually print pdfs of books at a copy shop and they turn out fine.
The problem comes when I try to print the same books at home.
I use Adobe Acrobat X with the same settings: "multiple pages per sheet" (2x1) and page border. But the pages are slightly shrunken when printed. I think this is because my printer can't print as closely to the margins. Still, two pages should be able to fit on one sheet in actual size. Are there any layout settings that I can play with to find a better fit, besides portrait and landscape?
If I select page scaling "none," I'm able to print the pdf in actual size, one page per sheet. But there's no option to add a page border.

I have a test with some questions (multiple choice, FIB, matching, etc). I have just one button to submit all the answers, and after submiting the student can see his score and review the test to know where he failed. He can't answer again. However, he can change the answer multiple times before submiting.
"if i turn on success/failure captions the student will see them while answering" - before submitting
"if i turn them off he wont know what's the right answer" - after submitting
My results page is the default. I didn't use any variable. When i go to the results page after reviewing the test all the entry boxes are "wrong".

How to view the document in actual size (pixel perfect) in CC 10?

currently I'm working on a Mac with InDesign CC (10.0.0.07) and I use it for ui, so I need to view my document in the actual size (pixel perfect). In CS 6 I was able to double click on the zoom tool and my document showed up in like 74% or so and it was pixel perfect. This is what is really important when you use InDesign for screen layouts. And now with the new CC update I'm not able to do this anymore.
Has anyone a suggestion how to fix this, or has had the same experience? This is really essential for designing websites.

@Stefan – this behavior has changed from CC v9.2 to v10.0.
To get what you want you need a ExtendScript (JavaScript) once written by John Hawkinson. That code snippet will change preference settings not exposed to the user, the Custom Monitor Ppi, to 72 ppi and enable their usage.

How can I print a pdf doc of size A3 (one page only) on A4 (on one page) front and back (actual size duplex printing) without reducing the size?

The printing should come of actual size half on front and half on back of A4 paper.

Can you lock a pdf to print in Actual Size?

I'm having an issues when others go to print out a document and don't make sure the document is set to print in actual size and we lose the scaling on the document. Is there a way to lock the print settings on a pdf so they are always correct?

You can set a Print Preset in Acrobat Pro in File > Document > Advanced which controls the way the Print dialog initially displays. Of course, someone could also change it. You cannot lock the print settings.

How do I find the actual size of an app? Example: a wallpaper app claims the size of 4.4 MB, but the size on my iPhone is 4.9 GB!

Some of the apps on my iPhone are much larger size-wise than claimed on their app page. Example: Wallpapers HD claims 4.4 MB, but the actual size on my phone is 4.9 GB! Pinterest & Facebook also end up being huge real estate hogs. How do I really know the size of an app? The apps don't represent themselves accurately in the app store.
I figured out that 2 of my podcast apps allow me to remove content after listening. Others don't, though.
I'm hoping some of you younger people know the answer.

The size of an app depends on two different things:
1) the size of the App (as in the App Store)
2) the size of the App Data
The App Data can really inflate the size.
If you want to see how much space an app is actually taking up, got to the Settings app under General and then tap "usage."
Unfortunately some apps don't let you delete the content. Others do.

Here is my suggestion:
Open a blank, new file (File>new>blank file) size 8.5x11"
Open the collage
Go to Select>all
Go to Edit>copy
Go back to the blank file created in step #1
Go to Edit>paste. The collage will be on its own layer
Access the move tool, and with the corner handles resize the collage. Using the corner handles should preserve the aspect ratio. If you open the rulers, you will have a point of reference as you go along.
Print a draft copy to see if it will be suitable in the frame..

But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click. Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.

Is there any way to get true "actual size"?

The "actual size" view on my new 20" Apple cinema display is only 75% of actual size in all of my layout/image programs. Is there any way to fix this?

I assume you are referring to the 72 point-per-inch legacy standard. The only way I know to get there today is to use an old 21" CRT monitor and set it to 1024 x 768. But I am not really sure you would like the end result. Pretty retro.
Tiger has an undocumented facility to independently scale the UI to any screen DPI (dots-per-inch). There was supporting software for this on one of the developer's CDs. You can read about that here:

Even better is that 10.5 is rumored to have this feature fully implemented. That would be great. It will clear the way for monitor resolution to climb higher without further damaging WYSIWYG, or "actual size" as you call it.
