Jpeg saving opptions

When I save an image as a jpeg, there are three opptions: 1. Baseline Standard, 2. Baseline Optimised, 3. Progresive. Can anyone explain the differences apart from file size?

The short answer is to use "Baseline (Optimized)" for saving JPG files.
The long answer(s) can be found by searching the Web for "baseline standard", but here's what you need to know about PSE's JPG saving options:
JPG is a "lossy" method of compressing image files -- it throws away image data before doing the compression, so set your "Quality" option to "Maximized". That is the key setting for image quality.
"Baseline (Optimized)" might reduce file size slightly (2% or so), and might be incompatible with viewers using old technology. "Optimized" might produce better colours, but that might not be perceptable.
"Progressive" means that the image is rendered as scan lines (like the old-fashioned TVs used) so that a browser will quickly show a reduced quality image of half the scan lines while it resolves the complete image.
Personally, I never use JPG -- each time a JPG is saved you lose more and more image data because of the lossy compression algorithms. I use PNG, which is lossless.

  • JPEGs saved in CS5 show as red box in RoboHelp7

I've been using CS2 at work and yesterday they upgraded me to CS5. Today, I was updating our manuals in RoboHelp7 and opened up one of the jpeg images in CS5, made some changes and saved it. Immediately, in RoboHelp, the image disappeared and was replaced by a red outlined box. I resaved the image with no change. Finally, I opened CS2, checked the settings, made sure they were the same in CS5, and resaved the image in CS5, still just the red box showed in RoboHelp. Finally, I opened the image in CS2, resaved it, and it immediately showed up in RoboHelp correctly.
Is there a way to fix this so that the jpegs saved in CS5 show up correctly in RoboHelp7?

I had the same situation today. I saved some jpeg images in CS5 extended and Advanced JPEG Compressor seem to have an issue with them. Still not sure what the problem is although I did notice that one of the jpegs was in cmyk format. You might want to check that out. Not sure if it has anything to with your problem but it might help.

  • Trouble importing JPEGs saved in Photoshop.

Here's a brief description of my workflow: I shoot Canon EOS 350D, import RAW files into Lightroom, correct them there, then edit some pictures in Photoshop, save as JPEGs and when all's ready, import the shoot into iPhoto because I prefer to keep the images there.
But I'm frequently having troubles with the JPEGs saved in Photoshop: iPhoto gives me an error that the files were in corrupt format and could not be imported. However, I can open em up in Preview just fine. So I have to re-import them into Lightroom and export them again from there. This time the images get sucked into iPhoto just fine. Any ideas what might be causing this? And what is the solution?

This sounds like the Photoshop Color Profile bug. Check out this thread:

It's one of many but there's a solution - of sorts - in it.

  • Jpegs saved in Photoshop appear darker in SOME programs/websites - how do I fix this?

This started happening earlier this year all of a sudden with my Photoshop 7. After trying in vain to fix it last night from reading many many other message board posts people have made regarding this issue I gave up and downloaded the newest Photoshop Trial. It still happens argh. Now I know well meaning intelligent types are going to say to me it's to do with colour settings or colour management profiles or something like that but please realise whilst I know where these things are to change them and understand roughly what they involve, I don't know specifically why they are causing the problem and therefore exactly which settings I should have to solve it. This seems to be the information missing from everything I've read on the other forums, message boards, discussions etc.
I first discovered jpegs being saved darker when saving anything with a white background. When put up against other white backgrounds, they appeared slightly darker and you could see the outline. Now when I edit photographs and view them in some places outwith photoshop I definitely see the difference. But it can't be my monitor - because it doesn't happen everywhere! I've attached a screenshot for you to see.
From left to right: editing a post in blogger (the images appear just as dark in the published posts), viewing the image on Facebook, the jpeg in photoshop.
So some places online see it darker and others don't. They seem fine and stay appearing just as light as they are in photoshop when viewed in windows viewers, or seen in thumbnail form in the windows explorer thing.
From the tidbits I've read I'm assuming this may have something to do with how facebook and blogger colour manage things differently? But I'm not sure if that's right. What I just want to know is how can I save my jpegs giant and small from photoshop so that they look the same in all programs on my pc and in every website I use online? I've tried fiddling with settings but to no avail.
Here's the current setup of my colours in photoshop:
Please can someone explain why some things look okay and others don't and exactly how to sort it? Don't just send me to a link that teaches me about colour profiles and triangles or monitor calibration
    Thankyou in advance!!

A lot of people panic when they see Photoshop displaying differently from other software. But that's normal and expected. Here's what happens:
    1. Photoshop is color managed and performs a document profile > monitor profile conversion when it displays. So whatever the document profile is, Photoshop will display correctly - unless you have CM policies set to "off" (...!)
    2. Other applications, including many web browsers, aren't color managed and will just send the file numbers directly to the display. This distinction is extremely important, because there will be a slight difference. Again, that's normal. Photoshop is right and the other apps are wrong.
    3. Without color management, it all hangs on how your monitor displays color. Most monitors are so close to sRGB that any sRGB file will display roughly correctly. This is why sRGB is the de facto web standard: it can live without color management. And that's why you should always convert web material to sRGB. Yes, that's the Edit > Convert to Profile option. You can also use Save For Web to do this if you check the appropriate boxes.

  • Why can't I delete or open a PSD jpeg saved for Web from my desktop?

I was working with photoshop today and saved multiple versions of the same flyer I made to my desktop. One of the flyer versions I clicked "save for web" and it showed up as a jpeg on my desktop.
I cleaned up my desktop today and I can't put that version in a folder, delete or open it. When I right click "move to trash," I get this error message:
It literally will not move anywhere. I searched other forms and they said to click on the desktop (so nothing is highlighted like in the picture above) and click get info and then uncheck the locked box. Nothing is checked, so....?

  • Help - Using Auto. to move/copy/sort jpegs saved on desktop to folders

I have, daily, between 20 and 100 images saved on my desktop (mostly net images). I apply Spotlight comments to each of them, based on a dozen categories.
What I want Automator to do, is to look at all of the jpeg/jpgs on my Desktop, read the Spotlight comments, and place a COPY of each in a specified folder. (I don't mind running it 12 times)
So, there are 100 images, 40 have the Spotlight comment "Apple" - I want Automator to look at the 100, find the 40 that have "Apple" and place a copy of each image into a Folder in my Pictures category called "Apple Images".
    PowerMac G5 2x2 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

This will do it if you perform the action immediately after the file is selected (if not, just save the filename to an Automator variable, then get the variable before the action).
In Run Shell Script, you must: Pass input [as arguments]
The Run Shell Script Action is:
    n=${1##*_}
    n=${n%%-*}
    if [ ! -d "$HOME/Desktop/$n" ]; then
      mkdir "$HOME/Desktop/$n"
    fi
    mv "$1" "$HOME/Desktop/$n"
Note: With this, you do not need the Action you used to "strip out the prefix of Schedule_ or MDAlarm_" as n=${1##*_} strips everything before: _ and n=${n%%-*} after: -

  • CS4 JPEG Saving Problem

My wife and I use CS4. Lately after she edits a photo and saves it as a jpeg, something happens. It's like it doesn't save with the .jpg extention. When she goes to her pictures folder to open the file, there is a blank thumbnail and it won't open until she manually adds a .jpg to the end or sometimes it won't even save. Can someone help with this issue? Has it happened to you? How did you fix this?
    Thank  you.

Thank you for your reply. She hasn't changed her workflow and all of a sudden it is doing this. It's very confusing. It's like it is saving it as something other than a jpeg, not even an image file. It's just a blank thumbnail with her edited file name, but it won't let you open it. She has to double click on the file name, then add a .jpg, then the thumbnail shows up. It's very weird.

  • Icon previews missing on jpegs saved from Safari

This did not happen in Tiger and Safari 2. I always saw the icon preview of any jpegs dragged from a safari window to, say, the desktop ... now, in Leopard, I get the generic Photoshop symbol (jpegs are pref'd to open in PS). I can only get the icon preview of the image if I resave it in PS.
It's little thing but, it's frustrating as jpegs from the web usually have generic file names, so the preview comes in very handy for me. Yes, my view options are pref'd for icon preview. Thanks for your hep.

    Hi Tim
I'm curious why dragging an image from the web to your desktop creates a jpg file with a Photoshop icon. OS X natively assigns this action to Preview. Either you previously changed the jpeg "open with" assignment in either in Leopard or prior to Photoshop, or a 3rd party application did it for you?
As I posted, if I drag an image from Safari to the desktop, the image icon appears rather than a generic icon. Here's the image file appearing on my desktop:
Here's a screenshot of that file on the desktop:
If I open the info panel to that file, this is what I see:
When you open the info panel, do you see an image in the Preview section or a generic icon?

  • No JPEG saved to LR4 from CS6?

    Hi,
I'm running LR4.3 and CS6 on an iMac.  I open a raw file in LR4, then open in CS6 from Lightroom.  Edit a little, save as a jpeg, close, and the file does not come back into Lightroom.  Either in a folder or in the collection.  TIF and PSD come in... but not jpeg.
So I try to import the image.  It does not show up in the folder as a non imported image... or at all.  Then, I open my hard drive from Finder, go into the folder and there it is.
Why isn't LR4 reading my jpegs?
    Help!

The Photoshop CSxx edits are automatically imported in Lr only when you do a <save> as opposed to <save as>.
A <save> creates a PSD or TIFF but to create a JPG you have to do a <save as>.
The JPG should show when - in Lr - you right-click the folder in question and select <Synchronize folder>.
Also, be sure to turn on the Maximize Compatibility option in Photoshop so that Lightroom can read the images.
Consider creating the JPG via export in Lr. If you check the box <Add to this catalog> in the Export Dialog, the exported image will automatically be imported in Lr.

  • Jpegs saved via Mac won't open in Windows

I use Nikon transfer on my Macbook pro and save my pictures to a Western Digital passport external hard drive (that I also use in Windows applications). When I attach the drive to any Windows pc/laptop, I can only see and open whatever was created on Windows. I can't see or find the jpegs until I move back to my Mac. Any suggestions?

Step one would be to try them on a local windoze box. That should give you some indication of what might be wrong. Alternatively, try the Terminal command gzip. Read about it by typing in man gzip in a Terminal window and then pressing the return key.

  • Jpeg thumbnails too small when saved from Photoshop

Since moving to Snow Leopard, I notice that the Finder shows jpegs saved from Photoshop quite a bit smaller than jpegs saved using other apps, like Preview or just scanned images. This makes viewing the thumbnails in the Finder harder. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?
I would post a screen grab to show this, but I can't see how to do that here. If anyone knows, please let me know.
    Thanks

That's because Photoshop creates its own rather smallish icons (by the new standards) for the files. If you remove custom thumbnails and let Finder draw them they'll be scalable all the way up to 512x512. There is a preference from within Photoshop to tell it to NOT create icons. Go to PS prefs, select Saving Files, and turn off Image Previews. The advantage is that the icons can be drawn larger; the disadvantage is that they will appear in Finder more slowly, since instead of simply displaying what is there Finder has to draw the icons. Furthermore, Finder doesn't always draw the icons with the clarity one would expect: sometimes they never do appear as sharp as they ought to be (there are several very lengthy threads discussing this problem, with no real solution), sometimes they slowly appear in all their large glory.
Oh, and to post a picture, as in my signature, you have to have the image available somewhere online, then add an image tag.

  • Muse strips off digimarc copyright in jpeg files saved in photoshop. How do I prevent this from happening?

In Muse, the digimarc watermark I added in jpegs saved in photoshop get stripped off when uploaded to my website. How can I prevent this from happening? The jpegs are set to their exact size in Muse. Thanks.

    Hello
My procedure is to resize the original psd file in photoshop, change the mode to 8bits, apply the digimarc filter and then save as jpeg. I place the file in Muse without changing its size and upload. I then right click to save the uploaded image from my website and bring it into photoshop to verify the digimarc watermark. The digimarc filter shows there is no watermark at all.

  • Photoshop CS4 jpeg quality default

Quality default when saving a jpg picture was always 12/maximum in my CS4. (That was great!) Suddenly it switched to 5/medium for NO reason! And I'm working on hundred of pictures - I really don't want to change it manually each time, but it seems to be impossible to change default settings for that (as long as it does not change just for fun like it did!)
Can someone PLEEEEAAASE help me, before I go completely crazy! It's much too expensive to waste my time like that...
For anyone who can solve my problem: THOUSAND thanks in advance!
    Greetings Michael

That would say that if Photoshop was the app that saved a JPEG in the first place, that it must put the quality setting in the file somewhere, so that it will use that as the default the next time.  I suspected it might be doing that (which is why I wrote "I could be wrong" i my first post) but wasn't sure as I have not tried to analyze the default quality setting before.
But I just tested it and this seems to be the algorithm:
    1.  If you open a JPEG saved by some other means (e.g., an out-of-camera JPEG or from another app) Photoshop appears to default to the last setting at which you saved any prior JPEG from Photoshop .
    2.  If you open a JPEG that was saved by Photoshop, it will read in the quality setting from the EXIF information in that file somewhere and use that as the default for the next File - Save As (and also plain File - Save apparently).
