JPEG2000 Difference in Filesize betw. ID/Distiller

Hello,
If I use the same joboption that uses JPEG2000 for an ID-PDF, the size of the file ist about 5 to 10 times larger than the size of a PDF createt by distiller. Just for testing I placed only one 8bit TIFF/LZW in an ID document. The PDF created by ID is about 15 MB, the pdf created from a ID-PS ist about 2,5 MB. If I check the compression rate with pitstop, it says that the image in the ID-PDF is shrinked to 41%, the image in the distiller-PDF is shrinked to 8%. No other elements in the PDF.
With any other compression format (JPG, ZIP) there is also a difference in filesize and compression rate, but minimal.
Anyone any idea?
Kind regards
Martin

I've also seen this phenomena with my own files.
The problem seems to be that the PDF library used by InDesign and Illustrator for PDF creation is interpreting Automatic (JPEG2000) / Maximum Quality or JPEG2000 / Maximum Quality differently than does Distiller. As a result, images compressed in direct export PDF with comparable JPEG2000 settings to those used with distilled PostScript will find much larger files, albeit the compressed images are nearly lossless.
Two workarounds:
(1)     For exported PDF, use joboptions with more aggressive compression and hence "less quality," for example Automatic (JPEG2000) / High Quality or JPEG2000 / High Quality. I don't think you will be able to notice any difference other than file size.
(2)     Instead of using Automatic (JPEG2000) / Maximum Quality or JPEG2000 / Maximum Quality, use Automatic (JPEG) / Maximum Quality or JPEG / Maximum Quality. Again, I don't think you will be able to notice any difference other than file size.

  • Filesize of a repo-package differs from an own build package

    hi all
    I have some problems playing back audio-CD's with the newest
    xine-lib-1.1.5-2.pkg.tar.gz. Xine-ui, gxine and amarok are crashing.
    Thats why I started to build my own xine-lib-package. Tested some different
    configure-settings without success. But that's not the point for me.
    If I build the package with exactly the PKGBUILD from abs I get a difference
    in filesize between the repo-package and my own build.
    I always thought, that the filesize after build must be identical?
    Didn't changed any compilersettings and the system is up to date.

  • Multiple questions.

    Hello,
    I am having some issues with a few things regarding editing slides:
    Is it possible to make Captivate wait (pause) at every slide before continuing to the next one, without having any objects in it? For example, I have a powerpoint presentation linked in Captivate, and I want the user to decide when to proceed to the next slide. Effectively allowing the user to have all the time he/she needs to read the presentation slides.
    In order to allow the user to proceed to the next slide without having any objects in the slide, is due to the flash player controls at the bottom.
    I tried the "On slide exit -> No action" feature, but that didn't help, it will just proceed to the next slide after this slide's timer has expired.
    Regarding zoom area's:
    Having a zoom area, and choosing an image for the zoom destination area, will make the image appear as soon as you set the timer to (Appear after 1 second for example). Is it possible to make it interactive, allowing the user to click on a thumbnail, and the large image pop up?
    So far I've only been able to achieve this by using the zoom area in a slidelet. The slidelet is activated by clicking on the click area. Putting the click area on the thumbnail would produce the desired effect.
    Importing powerpoint presentations:
    After I import a powerpoint presentation in an empty project, the filesize of the published project is extremely large. Publishing an empty project (1 empty slide) is about 100 KB. Adding a powerpoint presentation of 800 KB will increase the filesize to roughly 5.8 MB with compression ON. Is this normal? Setting publish quality to low makes next-to no difference in filesize (100 KB or so).
    The powerpoint presentation contains nothing but a few screenshots and normal lay-out. Nothing like special effects etc.
    If it's normal for a powerpoint presentation to increase the size this much (800 KB -> 5.7 MB) I'm starting to think I'm better off just making everything in Captivate.
    I'll meddle about and keep this updated if I find out more, my apologies for the wall of text.
    Thanks in advance

    You did not mention the version of Captivate used, so perhaps these answers will not be quite relevant (I'm using CP4).
    First question: insert a Click box and extend it to the whole slide. It will pause you slide until the user clicks on the slide, or until he uses the buttons on the controls on the playbar.
    Second question: indeed you will need a clic kbox on the thumbnail. But I think you still could use the Zoom Area, if you just put it on the timeline a fraction of a second later than the click box. The click box will pause the slide (timeline stops), when clicked the Zoom Area will appear.
    Third question: here I'm a bit puzzled. I just checked several CP-movies, created from PPT's and all of them less than doubled in size. And they did have animations. An example: pptx : 405KB, when imported in CP4 it resulted in a 750Kb file. I used Powerpoint 2007 and CP4. If you used CP4: did you Link or Embed the ppt? Standard is Linked, I'm using this all the time. If you deactivate 'Linked' the presentation will be embedded, perhaps that is the problem.

  • Acrobat 10 Pro vs Acrobat 9 Pro Extended

    Fellow Forum Members,
    Has Adobe dropped the Typewriter tool that Acrobat 9 had?  Also Acrobat 9 Pro Extended had an app called Presenter. Has this also been dropped?  Can anyone out there post a list of what features have been dropped from Acrobat 10 Pro that Acrobat 9 Pro Extended use to have.
    The biggest difference I see is in the file size between the two apps.  Acrobat 10 is close to 460 MB while Acrobat 9 as I remember was close to 1 GB. Does this difference in filesize mean that Acrobat 10 is missing a lot of the features version 9 had?  Evenmore, the GUI for Acrobat 10 looks very bare compared to version 9.  Has Acrobat 10 gone through some reverse evolution ?
    Any info will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Can anyone out there post a list of what features have been dropped from Acrobat 10 Pro that Acrobat 9 Pro Extended use to have.
    The headline differences are as follows...
    Items omitted from Acrobat X which where in one or more editions of Acrobat 9:
    1) Ability to import and transcode video/audio files other than MP3, Flash Video and H.264 (now handled by Adobe Media Encoder in Acrobat X Suite).
    2) Ability to import and transcode 3D model files other than U3D and PRC (now handled by the Tetra4D Converter application, sold separately).
    3) Ability to embed legacy rich media annotations (removed for security reasons - legacy media will play but cannot be created).
    4) Ability to import and register geospatial images and maps (now handled by export tools within native GIS software).
    5) Organizer and the History tree (users should use external fie management and browsing tools such as Adobe Bridge, etc).
    6) Support for Highlight File Format (functionality is no longer available).
    7) ADBC (users should convert to using XFA or SOAP).
    8) Headless import of InDesign files (now handled by the Export utility in InDesign itself).
    There are lots of tweaks under the surface to make the installer footprint smaller. Losing some of the above features make a big difference (geospatial and 3D support took a lot of space), and despite being smaller than Acrobat 9, Acrobat X includes many new features too - such as support for Office 2010, export to spreadsheet, intelligent scan and OCR, etc. It's certainly true that it's not possible to replicate the entire functionality of Pro Extended, but as many users only needed a fraction of the tools, splitting off the specialist stuff makes commercial sense too - Acrobat X Pro is significantly cheaper than Pro Extended, even if you factor in the cost of a couple of commercial plugins. For example many users who were using Pro Extended for video work also had a copy of Creative Suite, Vegas, etc., so they already had the ability to generate the correct video files - duplicating chunks of the conversion code in Pro Extended didn't make sense, and with full H.264 support in Acrobat X we can import files from most prosumer sources (camcorders, cellphones, etc) without any conversion at all.

  • Adobe pro 9 creating blanks

    HI, I'm hoping someone can help me out.  I converted an excel document (which chooses the page I am saved on to convert) using Adobe Pro 9.0 and then ran my "Flowfile" which filed it into my efiling cabinet. (I am also running Windows 7 incase that is important).  When I went to open the Adobe document it was blank / no image at all. It was also blank using Adobe Pro 8.0 to view.  When you open the blank pdf document and look at the properties, there is nothing showing on the fonts tab.  On the Description tab under properties, under Advanced Metadata the 9.0 document lists Application as PScript 5.dll version 5.2.2
    I then used another machine and converted the excel document (which again chose the page I am saved on to convert) using Adobe 8.0 pro and ran my "Flowfile" to file into my efiling cabinet. When I went to open the newly converted document is was showing the page image correctly.  Under document properties, Description tab, Advanced Metadata lists Application Data as Acrobat PDFMaker 8.1 for Excel.
    When I compared the document properties, the only difference I can see is distiller version and the Application info under Advanced Metadata.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

  • Best quick and dirty export format for roughcuts

    They'll be going up on vimeo.  Currently using H264, but filesizes are not small.  Cant use FLV for vimeo, was wondering for opinions are the best format for quick encoding and small filesize (quality not such an issue)
    thanks!

    are you saying reducing the size makes no difference to filesize?
    Correct.  The bit rate determines how much data is available to create the image in the frame.  If it's a small frame size, the data goes a long way and the picture quality is good.  If the frame size is big, then the data gets spread very thin and the picture quality is bad.  So a higher bit rate = bigger file = better picture quality for larger frame sizes.
    Regardless of frame size, only the bit rate and duration determine the size of the video file on disk.

  • Newbie in hell...flash cs4 image

    Hello everyone,
    I must warn you I am an absolute beginner with flash, however am proficient in Illustrator / ps cs4 and now have flash cs4. I have a mountain of graphic work for a client and as part of this welcome work I've inherited a flash header that I need to finish for a website. The only problem is, I usually work in print and know nothing about flash, but would like to tackle this if I can. The inherited header is 980 x 230 with 8 images that fade in/out as they change over each other (morph). It was originally done in flash 10 using tweens but I gather flash has changed a bit with regards to this sort of thing.
    I like to learn new things but I have spent HOURS online and just can't find out how to do this. I've had a good look around flash but unfortunately I just can't dedicate days or weeks to learning the entire program.
    From what I can gather so far:
    The images go into flash library (is jpeg ok or do they have to be BMP) then I need to convert them to symbols then they go into the timeline as layers ...OMG I guess my first question is..is this a fairly simple thing to accomplish or should I look at outsourcing it? I'm pretty good with the teaching myself stuff, but my biggest enemy is time. I've looked at the adobe tv tuts but didn't see anything like what I'm after (the image doesn't need to slide, it just needs to fade into another one).
    I'm so buggered, hoping if I get some sleep some kind soul will either be willing to help, or tell me to forget it, either way helping to end my frustration!
    Thanks in advance,
    A bona fide Flash Dummie...
    Lauren

    I
    don't have CS4 so I am not familiar with the new way of tweening, only
    with what CS4 calls classic tweens, which is what I grew up with in
    Flash.  What I described for you is based on classic tweens.
    While those in in the know
    (a few) praise the wonders of the new tweens, general concensus in these
    forums for those that question them is that trying/learning to work
    with the new tweens is not straightforward.
    As far as movieclip versus
    graphic goes, neither is preferable over the other.  Both will perform
    in a tween.  Movieclips are useful when you have more to do with the
    object than just display it.
    The difference with the motion tweens is that the motion tweens are built to be easily scalable and to provide a graphical interface for easily updating/editing the tweens visually (including path, timing etc). Classic tween is what you want for your project so you're on the right track. As far as the difference between a movieclip and a bitmap not mattering, well it depends really on the scale of the project but best practice is to go with the smaller class. The movieclip class is massive, one of the largest because it is a dynamic type and is near the bottom of the chain of inheritance on the flash displayobject list. So, the bitmap class would be probably like 1/10th the file size of the movieclip class, so go with bitmap. Since flash is primarily a web technology and I'm sure you're doing this project for a website, every byte matters.  Imagine the difference in filesize is 5 kb just because of what classes you decide to use but you decide to deploy the project on a website with 5 million users. Thats 25 gigabytes of wasted bandwidth. Anyway that doesn't really apply to you because you're doing timeline tweens and the flash IDE will automatically import all of those bulky classes anyway, but it's good to keep in mind if you decide to pursue getting deeper into flash and working with actionscript.
    Anyway it looks like you've almost got your project all sorted out but there is the problem with doing everything inside flash using timeline tweens. As you're aware, it's a pain if you need to update. Below is some basic actionscript you can paste inside of a new fla file. It's not the best example but I just kind of wipped it up and should be more than enough for you to pick apart and learn how actionscript 3 works in flash. So.. create a new fla set the stage to the size of your project (980 X 230) pixels. Create a new blank movieclip (might as well, read up) and give it an instance name of "imageContainer". That's it for setup in the FLA. In the same folder as the FLA create a folder beside the fla called images. Create a new text document inside that folder and name it "filelist.xml". In that list, paste this:
    <files>
        <file filename="171_2784_2.jpg" />
        <file filename="165_2564_0.jpg" />
        <file filename="171_2690_2.jpg" />
        <file filename="171_2735_1.jpg" />
    </files>
    Copy all of your images for this project into the images folder. Now modify that XML to include the name of each file in the folder.
    Now back in your FLA, click the first frame of the main timeline. Open the actions panel (view -> actions in the menu)
    Now paste this into that frame:
    import fl.transitions.Tween;
    import fl.transitions.easing.Strong;
    import fl.transitions.TweenEvent;
    var listIndex:int = 0;
    var nextImage:Bitmap = new Bitmap();
    var listOfImages:Array = new Array();
    var listLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    listLoader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, parseFileList);
    listLoader.load(new URLRequest("images/filelist.xml"));
    var imageLoader:Loader = new Loader();
    var cycleTimer:Timer = new Timer(5000, 0);
    cycleTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, beginImageCycling);
    function parseFileList(e:Event):void
        //trace(e.currentTarget.data); //Uncomment this to debug and see what data is coming in
        var fileListXML:XML;
        try{
            fileListXML= new XML(e.currentTarget.data);
        }catch(e:Error){
            trace("The file list is either not well formed XML or not XML at all");
        var a:Number;
        //Get an XMLList object which will contain all of the children of the fileListXML
        var fileList:XMLList = fileListXML.children();
        for(a = 0; a < fileList.length(); ++a){
            trace(fileList[a].attribute("filename"));
            listOfImages.push(fileList[a].attribute("filename"));
        trace("Done parsing file list XML");
        beginImageCycling();
    function beginImageCycling(e:TimerEvent = null):void
        imageLoader = new Loader();
        imageLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, showNextImage);
        imageLoader.load(new URLRequest("images/" + listOfImages[listIndex]));
        listIndex++;
        if(listIndex >= listOfImages.length){
            //This will reset the index and begin looping from the images from the start
            listIndex = 0;
    function showNextImage(e:Event):void
        trace("Image loaded, get ready to show it");
        nextImage = e.currentTarget.content as Bitmap;
        var tw:Tween = new Tween(nextImage, "alpha", Strong.easeOut, nextImage.alpha, 0, 1, true);
        tw.addEventListener(TweenEvent.MOTION_FINISH, changeOutImage);
        tw.start();
    function changeOutImage(e:Event):void
        while(imageContainer.numChildren > 2){
            trace("removing old images");
            imageContainer.removeChildAt(0);
        //Add the new image to the container, in this case the stage
        imageContainer.addChild(nextImage);
        var tw:Tween = new Tween(nextImage, "alpha", Strong.easeOut, nextImage.alpha, 1, 1, true);
        //Restart the timer to cycle images
        cycleTimer.reset();
        cycleTimer.start();
    In the menu go to Control--->Play. That should do it, it should cycle through those images over and over. I'm at work doing this on my lunch I'll post a completed project/demo of this later when I get home and give you an intro to actionscript by covering the code I've put here. Anyway so now the benefit of doing things this way is that if you want to adjust the transition time, you simply go to the :Tween = new Tween lines and change this:
    Strong.easeOut, nextImage.alpha, 1, 1, true);
    to:
    Strong.easeOut, nextImage.alpha, 2, 1, true);
    Which will change the transition time from 1 second to 2 seconds. Or, say if you want to add new pictures, all you have to do is change that XML and copy in new pictures, something even your client could do (which is sure to make them happy).
    Anyway I'll post later even if you don't need this anymore it may be useful to somoene else who finds this topic one day. .:)

  • Firefox 3.6 color management incorrect on wide-gamut monitors?

    Hi,
    I'm having a problem with sRGB JPEGs exported from Lightroom (2.7) that I don't actually think is LR's fault, but was wondering if anyone here has experienced this.
    What I'm finding is that these sRGB JPEGs don't display correctly on my wide-gamut Dell 2408WFP monitor under Windows 7 in Firefox 3.6.9 or in the Windows image viewer. Now, this isn't the standard problem people used to complain about on wide-gamut monitors, where sRGB images came out looking oversaturated (pinkish) in FF because older versions of FF didn't do color management; the newer Firefox seems to be doing color management in general. The problem I'm seeing in my photos is that dark areas are becoming darker and losing detail, and midrange shadows are turning into a grayish green.
    What's odd is that these JPEGs look fine in Safari on the same machine and the same monitor (and they also look fine if I load them into PS). That suggests to me that Firefox (and Windows) are doing something wrong, probably related to the fact that the monitor is wide-gamut.
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
    Thanks,
    nj

    Jim,
    I think you are right in saying that it is a crap shoot. There are some interesting points in your post though.
    The general public will be viewing with a monitor and browser that are not color managed. Won't my v4 images diplay fairly well under this situation (at least much better than with ff3.6 and a monitor with a v4 profile)?
    That will work just fine indeed. It is arguable whether it will look "better". The variation between monitors is much larger than the benefit you gain from using v4. One thing that will work better is the out of sRGB gamut colors. You won't get the posterization using the v4 sRGB profile that you get with the v2 sRGB. For some images (think shots of flowers) that might be a major benefit. If all your colors are in sRGB that is obviously not a benefit at all. The big disadvantage of using v4 sRGB is that it adds quite a few extra kilobytes (about 60) to your image. For example, I just exported from Lightroom a simple web sized image at 1000 pixels long side at good quality and in v4 it was 262 kB, while in v2 sRGB it weighs in at only 209 kB. I see no real difference between these images on my wide-gamut monitor. This difference in filesize can be important and at smaller sizes is really going to matter.
    What about a wide gamut monitor that's not color managed, running a browser that doesn't support v4?
    The v4 sRGB image will look just as badly oversaturated as the normal sRGB one. Try it and you'll see. Perhaps slightly less oversaturated but the difference is very small in general. The one thing that you should realize of course is that if these users are running a non-managed browser on a wide gamut display, they are likely conditioned to oversaturated images and probably will never even notice. These users are lost anyway. It's best not to even try to target them. Target normal users who generally run unmanaged browsers on unmanaged sRGB-like displays. The variation between these displays is far larger than the slight advantage you get from using sRGB v4 and in my mind at least it is not worth the added size in the picture and the loss of color management in Firefox. Of course, you might have different priorities.
    P.S. the numbers of users using unmanaged browsers are waning quite quickly if I am to believe my website's stats - IE is way down and both Safari and Firefox are up. Chrome (not managed) is coming up too but not as fast as IE is decreasing. Apparently (I haven't tried as I don't do windows) the latest IE does respect embedded color profiles, but alas it doesn't translate to the monitor profile. That is of course basically useless.

  • Spooling of a query generates different file lengths on different databases

    Please help me regarding a problem with spooling. I spooled a query output to a file from two different database. In both the databases the table structure is the same and the output produced only one row. But the file size is different for the databases. How can this problem occur? Is there any database parameter need to be checked? Both the databases are in same version 10.2.0.1.0.
    before running the spool i did a

    on both the sessions.
    In one database the filesize is *1463 bytes* and on the other the filesize is *4205 bytes*.
    Please help me to find out these discrepancies.

    No the data in the columns are exectly the same. But in the larger file i see more spaces between columns where as in the smaller one the no of spaces are less. Can anyone tell me is there any parameter which defines the character which will be replaced while spoolng when you get a column blank/null. But as i have already declared /t as a colsep i couldnot identify why there is the difference in the no of spaces between columns resulting the difference in filesizes?

  • AME Suddenly Ignoring Bitrate Settings - Bad Update?

    I have had trouble with the output quality from the Adobe Media Encoder, but I generally got good results encoding web video with the H.264 Codec.  However, since my last update this has all changed.
    Now my video is being produced with far more compression than the settings say... so If I set a reasonable target bit rate of say - 2.94 Mbps, (this is for a 640x360 progressive video at 24 fps and a lot of graphics), the encoder predicts an output file size of around 75 MB for a 3 and 1/2 minute video.... and then produces a 6MB file that looks like absolute crap.
    I can boost the bitrate to absolutely astronomical settings - all the way to 50Mbps, and the resulting file will be 10MB - not the 1.3 GB predicted by Premiere's encoder setup.
    None of my saved custom profiles work as expected any more.  And no amount of tinkering makes any difference.  What just happened?

    I guess I didn't make it clear - the quality is horrible REGARDLESS of what the target and max bit
    rate are set to.  On 2 pass vbr, it makes almost no difference in filesize in the completed output even if
    I max the values out for both settings.  On single pass VBR I can make a tiny difference, but the output quality starts out good, and then degrades steadily toward the end of the video - it's as if the max bitrate constantly decreases as the video progresses. I have tried with several videos now.
    With CBR encoding, I can get okay results at the cost of increased file size, but the output still bears little relation to the bitrates that I set.
    This is really wierd behaviour and not consistent with what I was getting even a week ago. I'm trying to figure out what could have changed.

  • Difference in generated PDF file size between distiller 6.0 and 10.0

    Hi,
    we are currently using Distiller server 6.0.1 on Windows server 2003 to convert PS to PDF, we want to upgrade our operating system to Windows server 2008 R2 but distiller server is not supported on this,
    so we are evaluating Acrobat distiller 10 which comes along with Acrobat pro x but we noticed some slight difference in the generated PDF file size, for the same PS the distiller server 6.0 generated PDF
    file size of 55 KB whereas Acrobat distiller 10 generated PDF file is 53 KB. The output looks same but wondering whether is it safe to continue further with the file size difference, it would be good
    if you could provide some insight into why the file sizes are different between these two versions.
    Thanks,
    Anand

  • Difference between PDFmaker/distiller and print-to-PDF

    When I create a PDF from within MS Word either through the File > Print menu, or through the Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF menu (i.e. PDFmaker?) I end up with subtly different results, despite using exactly the same joboptions file.  Why is this?!
    Samples are attached.
    In the first pair, the text glyph placement differs.
    In the second pair (see following), the dotted circle outlines are different.  [Also the leftmost grey table border is claimed to be different, although I can't pick the difference by eye.]
    (Adobe identifies the problems through Acrobat's Document > Compare Documents menu — set for detailed analysis of page-by-page visual differences — although for the character positioning it's a bit subjective, I think.)
    Tip:  you have to zoom in a lot to see these on screen.

    p = printed to PDF
    d = "distilled" (PDFMaker)

    Hi Bill@VT,
      you may well be correct in your comments, but I don't yet see the connection to my question.  This could be partly due to my loose/incorrect use of the terminology.
      To clarify:
    * The two PDF file types were both created directly from within MS Word;  one just printing, after setting Adobe PDF as the printer, and the other going through the extra Adobe menu (which would be equivalent to clicking the toolbar icon, I believe).
    * I realise there are lots of settings relating to bookmarks, metadata, etc. that only apply to the second route above.  My query is not about such differences.
    * With regard to the settings that are common to both routes, I set them to be identical (in theory) by selecting the same joboptions profile/file.
    * The differences I see and/or that Adobe Acrobat identifies are visual differences.  (At least on screen.)
    In fact, from your explanation that both of the above two routes use the Adobe PDF printer (and neither use the Distiller), I am even more puzzled as to how visual differences can arise.

  • Differences betw. layered & content panes?

    [My apologies if this isn't the correct forum, but I didn't see anything more relevant.]
    Aside from the obvious (layering in a LayeredPane), what are the differences between layered and
    content panes? Can't a layered pane do everything a (JPanel) content pane can, and more? I've read the
    tutorials & the API specs, searched archives and the 'Net until my head spins, but can't get a handle
    on this. If I've missed a source, please point me to it.
    More specifically, having a vanilla JFrame, would I ever want to use its layered and its content
    pane at the same time? If so, what are the relationships between components add()ed
    to one wrt those add()ed to the other?
    If not (use both simultaneously), why bother having two? Wouldn't it be as effective to ditch the
    content pane, and use the layered pane for all operations, just putting everything into the same
    layer if you don't need the layering properties?
    And while I've got your attention, can I set a LayoutManager on a layered pane and still have its
    layering capabilities?
    Thanks for your kind attention to this plaint.

    I can certainly agree with your premises, but I need the
    conclusion to be clarified.
    LayeredPane is an Object, instantiable, touchable,
    manipulable---Check
    `content pane' is a concept, a certain location in the
    hierarchy of a JFrame (among others)---Check
    My head hurts---Check
    However, the two both appear as Objects in a JFrame, with
    the content pane location occupied by a JPanel (output
    heavily trimmed for readability):
    BigJFrame[frame0,1153,865,1152x864,rootPane=javax.swing.JRootPane[,0,0,0x0],rootPaneCheckingEnabled=true]
        0 JRootPane[,0,0,0x0,layout=JRootPane$RootLayout]
            0 JPanel[null.glassPane,0,0,0x0,layout=FlowLayout]
            1 JLayeredPane[null.layeredPane,0,0,0x0]
                0 JPanel[null.contentPane,0,0,0x0,layout=JRootPane$1]
                              ^^^^^^^^^^^Now obviously I can add Components to the content pane, but
    if I assign them layers, will the JLayeredPane be listening
    in, and make it so? Will the same happen if I just add them
    directly to the JLayeredPane?
    I should probably just put a new JLayeredPane in for the
    content pane, use it exclusively, and relegate these
    questions to a dark corner of my psyche, but that's tough
    because I want to know just what's going on so I won't get
    hit by some blindside effect later.
    <rantlet>
    I know Sun says they want to define minimal contracts for
    the JFC, so as to avoid painting themselves into a corner,
    but after reading the APIs, I was aghast at how much they
    left as undefined behavior. I've done more experimenting
    with AWT and Swing components than anything else in recent
    memory, just to try to avoid the worst of the surprises.
    </rantlet>
    I also agree that it's time to go home. We should just
    sleep on this and see if any revelations appear on the
    morrow.

  • Problem from Difference betw Thread and Process.

    Hi,
    my app create new Process and execute subtask. So, Main Process wait for the sub process to finish. Like follow.
    Process child= Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmds);//run java ClassName cmdArrays..
    try {
    child.waitFor();
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    //when error ocurrs it return error message
    return "Running Process error :\n "+
    e.getMessage();
    In this case if sub process run swing application, parent process seem to freeze.
    It will wait forever.
    I try to create new Thread to create new Process. But, the problem is child process is created by parent process. But, Parent is Thread not process.
    So, waitFor still make parent process freeze. Is this right?
    How can I solve this problem?

    waitFor() becasue I need input/errorStream You do not need to call waitFor() first in order to get the input/error streams of the child process!
                            Runtime         rt=Runtime.getRuntime();
                            Process         proc=rt.exec(command);
                            InputStream is=proc.getInputStream();
                            LineNumberReader lnr=new LineNumberReader(new InputStreamReader (is));
                            sRet=lnr.readLine();
                            String line;
                            while((line=lnr.readLine()) != null) {
                                    if (DEBUG1) System.out.println(line);
                                    InputStream is2=proc.getErrorStream();
                                    LineNumberReader lnr2=new LineNumberReader(new InputStreamReader (is2));
                                    while((line=lnr2.readLine()) != null) {
                                            System.err.println(line);
                            iRet=proc.waitFor();
