JPEGs have generic icons in finder.

I have several folders with many JPEGs, all between 8 & 12 MB each. Although I have selected "show icon preview" for all of them in Get Info, about 8% of them show only the generic JPEG icon, and not the preview of the pic.
Some are orig. scans of photos, some have been worked on in Photoshop, but there is no consistency between the ones showing only generic icons.
How can I fix this please?

The icons are generic in all views.
But when I 'get info' the preview of the pic is ok.
I can rectify the problem by opening each pic in turn with either preview or photoshop and immediately re-saving it over the top of the original, but this is a massive job as there are so many.
Any other suggestions?

Blank/generic icons in finder's sidebar

Each time I restart my computer I get generic icons for some elements in the finder window's sidebar.

This happened since I'm using Snow Leopard.
All the ones having "blank" icons are shortcuts to another hard drive (ie: not the startup disk). Using an open command (file › open) from another software and selecting each element restore the original icons.

When creating a Dock alias, you should drag the original item to the Dock, not an alias of it (any item in your Sidebar is an alias.
If this is not the issue go to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and delete these 2 files /com.apple.dock.plist
and com.apple.dock.db.plist
Then restart. This will give you the default Dock, so you'll have to reset yours the way you like it)

Applications have generic icon; some missing

Most of my applications suddenly have generic application icons. When I double click on one of these, it bounces twice and then stops. Nothing opens. Also, a fair number of applications have just vanished completely. I can't find them in Terminal, either. DiskWarrior found a few problems and fixed them; Disk Utility found lots of permission errors, which it fixed, but no disk errors. Unfortunately, these fixes didn't solve my problem.
This all started right after installing Sims 2 (which runs fine). But it's just a drag-and-drop app, so I don't see how that could have messed things up.
iMac G5, 10.4.7. Suggestions?

Depending on the errors DW found and corrected, the OS or the Applications folder may still be damaged, i.e. the directory was fixed but files on the hard drive were still damaged. Disk directory repair utilities can fix the directory, but nothing can repair a corrupted file: it must either be restored from backup or, in the case of an application, reinstalled.
If your directory was corrupted prior to installing Sims 2, that installation may have overwritten parts of current applications that now either appear missing or fail to launch.
I suspect the only way you are going to resolve this is by performing an Archive and Install to assure there is no OS damaged. For important tips on this, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.
Third-party applications that are still misbehaving after the Archive & Install may need to be uninstalled, then reinstalled.

Wrong/generic icon in Finder

I decided to change some of my application icons today, but when I click an icon and select "Get Info," the small image displayed in the upper left corner is a generic icon labelled "ICNS" or "PNG," and not the icon I want. This appears to be happening with all of my icons, even old ones I've had no trouble with before. Here's what I get when I look at my Firefox icon, for example:

Strange, as the icon shows up just fine in my dock, and also shows up when I select "Get Info" for the application itself.
I have "Show Icon Preview" checked off under my View options, and I'm quite puzzled. I tried using Micon instead of changing my icons manually, but only succeeded in replacing existing icons with the generic square image labelled "PNG." See:

No answer, but perhaps a clue for you...
If I go to /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/firefox.icns by viewing the contents, and on a never changed Get Info/Icon, and then I do a Get info on that firefox.icns by itself, it looks precicely like your first link, whereas a Get Info on Firefox itself has the FF icon up in the top left, not the icns icon with the folded corner as in my first one & your 1st pic/link.
Somewhere along the way my tongue stumbled over my eyelids or something, but...

Tif files have generic icon in bridge

Hi,
I can see the proper icon in the finder os 10.9.2 but only the generic tif icon in bridge. PSD work fine.
these tifs were created in Lightroom 5
I tried logging in as a different user, no change.

Don't use Lightroom, but have heard that you can create several different versions of files, some not readable outside of LR. So check that out.

Generic Icon vs. Thumbnail Icon

What would cause a photo (jpeg file) to show up in Finder with an icon that is a thumbnail of the actual photo vs. a generic icon? The two cases seem to lead to different behavior in a plug-in that I use (Mail Attachments Iconizer) in Mail. When attached to an email, the files with thumbnail icons open up in the body of the email whereas the files with generic icons do not (which is the desired behavior)?

That doesn't appear to be the case. Show Icon Preview is unchecked. Furthermore, other jpeg files in the same folder have generic icons.
I should add that the files with thumbnail view as icons were edited in Photoshop in OS 10.4 (my second drive boots into 10.4 to allow me to use an older version of Photoshop). This folder is on a partition of my 10.5 drive. I am viewing the folder in 10.5 That could be why these files show up differently, but I don't understand why it should be so.

Generic jpeg icon in finder

I have a number of jpeg icons which appear in a generic format in Icon view in the finder, i.e.the icon simply says 'jpeg' and does not give a thumbnail of the image. if I save an image in tiff format (from Photoshop or Preview) the icon shows a thumbnail of the file's contents but Preview saves show only the generic format. Two questions: how do I make sure all jpegs are saved with a thumbnail and can I convert existing generic icons to show a thumbnail without converting them to tiffs?

Why having displayed both generic icons for the PDF and JPEG files and automatic preview of the JPEG files in an ordinary folder are mutually exclusive in Win7?

In Win7 Pro all my:
PDF documents, with the 'Large Icons' option chosen in the View tab, display contents of their first page with a tiny thumbnail in the icon's lower right corner, instead of a generic PDF icon.
JPEG files show Icon size photos, instead of a generic Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icon.
Folders containing the JPEG photos, however, automatically show preview, when opened, which is desirable feature.
I found that the Win7 option "Always show icons never thumbnails" in the View tab: Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options, (where ironically the present 'thumbnails' have nothing to do with 'Thumbnails' from the View option in WinXP), causes the unwanted effects described in points 1 & 2, when unchecked.
Checking this option solves the problem of the PDF and Nero icons. This time, however, I can only see a Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icons, instead of photos preview on opening of any standard folder with the JPEG photos.
Did I make a mistake somewhere or maybe Microsoft made changes in Win7 with respect to WinXP, which make it impossible to have both the features working at the same time?

Display JPEG files not on desktop as thumbnails, not generic icons

I understand from previous forum entries that bringing up menu with command-J and checking "show icon preview" will display image files ON THE DESKTOP as thumbnails. This has worked fine for me. However, most of my image files are not on the desktop.
How do I get the system to display all JPEGs and other images not on the desktop as thumbnails. These are in folders, either on the startup volume or on other volumes.
My son who is a PC user was surprised that my Mac image folders contained all those generic icons and not thumbnails, like he is used to on his PC.
Hope there is an easy answer to this, and I greatly appreciate your help.

I have continued working on this issue since I posed the question, and discovered that I have to have my images in "icon display", not "list display" (which I have usually used).
When I changed to icon display, the menu from command-j allowed me to display all my icons as thumbnails.
The menu (command-j) from the list display doesn't give that option, so I was stumped until I stumbled on to this detail.

If you are using the 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV (little black box) then it would have no syncing or storage capability.
iTunes content would be accessed using home sharing.

Help! My .psd files do not have photoshop icons, but generic icons from windows.

Now that I've installed my new windows CS6, all my .psd files have the 'generic icons' windows give to files they don't recognize. Everything else has normal icons (i.e. Illustrator files) but the Photoshop files are blank. This is true whether I'm on any type of viewer format, i.e. details, thumbnails, Can someone help me?

Please try changing the file association for .psd files.
Right click on the file > Select 'Open with' > 'Choose default pogram' and then select 'Photoshop' in the list of programs.
Make sure 'Always use the selelcted pogram to open this kind of file' is checked at the bottom of the window.

That happened to me for a short period of time after I updated. It didn't do it with all apps, but it did it with a few here and there. Try a few basic standard troubleshooting steps. Close all apps and reset the iPad.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
You can also try resetting all settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.
Hopefully it will be something simple, but don't rule out restoring the iOS software, if nothing else works, but start with this easy stuff first.

I can't select it .. I click on it and nothing happens. The only thing I seem to be able to do is a two fingered click which brings up a context menu for the side bar preferences..but unfortunately this icon does not appear in the list.

I really appreciate everyone's imput for our original post so far and was hoping to have some positive news for y'all but unfortunately we are unable to retrive these photos from anywhere.
We have tried to retrive the icon in Finder and Applications but have been unsuccessful. We also
tried looking for the icon in every application within the imac but unfortunately still no success.
I know we would've, should've, could've but we never and this is the result of loosing all these precious
photos.
If anyone has any other ideas other than taking it to the experts we would greatly greatly appreciate this.
