JPG Folio Sluggish

Wondering if anyone can offer some insight...
I've got a 2048x1536 horizontal-only folio set up with 5 articles. Each article has 6 pages in it. In testing originally with a "live" InDesign document, the folio was very sluggish when it came to scrolling vertically through the pages. I figured it might have been an issue with having to load the different items individually so I exported out each page as a high quality jpeg and reimported them into the folio. That is how it is currently set up.
Each jpeg is around 500-700kb and when I publish to the iPad, the vertical scroll issue is the same. It stutters/takes 2-3 seconds to load vertical pages. In running some tests, I'm wondering if there is a maximum number of pages you can have in each article. I have two sections uploaded currently and the filesize for the folio is only 7mb. The scrolling worked fine when I uploaded the folio with png compression but it ballooned the file size quite a bit.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Neil,
We're just getting ready to launch a new large magazine and want to make the right design choices.  But we were wondering how when making PDF's DPS is deciding:
compression size and type, downsampling, whether jpeg quality is maintained, whether font sets are included? etc, etc.
These are all things you can normally control when making PDF's.  What are the settings that are being used?  and can they be changed or is this something that may not be available until future release?
Reason being: can we downsample the images to twice the resolution of a retina display?
Thanks
Chris

  • Differences between PDF folios and PNG/JPG ones?

    Would anyone be able to quickly summarise the subtle differences (apart from having the option to enable pinch/zoom) between these folio types. I have a multi-folio app on Newsstand which uses JPG folios but am keen to switch to PDF for the next issue. We use all overlay types and want to target problems early!  Thanks

    Here are the differences between PDF and JPG/PNG articles that I'm aware of:
    * PDF is not supported for Smooth Scrolling articles, even if you specify the PDF image format. For memory reasons, JPG or PNG is used instead. Enabling PDF for Smooth Scrolling articles is on the roadmap.
    * It sometimes takes a moment for a PDF article to come into focus, especially on the iPad 1. With iOS 5.1, this load delay is rare, at least in my experience.
    * PDF articles are not supported on Android devices. If a folio includes a single PDF article, it won't load in the viewer on a mobile device.
    * Pages in PDF articles can pinch & zoom if enabled in Viewer Builder.
    * The thumbnail previews of PDF articles do not appear in the Folio Producer Editor.
    * Overlays should look and function the same whether PDF, JPG, or PNG. When you zoom in on an overlay in a PDF article, pixelation might be noticeable, but that's expected.

    Hi!
    we recently started to work with DPS again and discovered that we can't create new folios anymore.
    For some reason exporting always fails. even with empty folios. (sometimes it uploads empty ones).
    We're trying to create PDF folios. but even JPG Folios won't work!
    any idea what may be behind this?
    Please Help!

    im suddenly able to upload empty folios. but the moment i add one single image, the upload fails again...

  • How can you see page previews in Folio Producer for pdf folio files?

    Hi,
    When we load pdf folios into Builder, Producer doesn't show us a preview of the page like it does for the jpg folio loads. If you click on the page area for the pdf folios, it just gives you a red box. Is there a way to see the page previews for the pdf folios like you can for the jpg folios? It makes entering metadata more difficult without being able to see the page preview.

    That’s a limitation. No way around it.

  • Renditions for Android

    Hi,
    What is the best practice to produce in this scenario:
    Now we have 2 differents resolutions for Android - 1280x800 (the most Android tablets) and 2560x1600 (Google Nexus 10')
    I have to produce 2 folios for each format from the same indesign files - 1280x800
    Is there some documentatios from Adobe to produce renditions to differents tablets resolution for Android?
    Nexus is retina screen for Android...
    Regards

    Hi,
    Great article
    Then, I am in Scenario 1: Lazy Susan
    1. Then let me know if I can produce 2 folios with aspect for iPad - 1024* and 2048*.
    The adobe servers will do renditions to
    JPG folio 1024*768 - to - Regular Androids tablets - 1280*800 / 1024*600 and so on (with letterbox)
    JPG Folio 2048*1536 - to - HD tablets Androids - 2560*1600
    This scenario works??
    My JPG folio 2048 px will be so heavy, I believe
    2. Let me know if I produce 1028×771 JPG Folio to Android tablets I will have better performance?

  • Preview a shared unprotected article in Web Viewer?

    I want to create my app to “Enable Web Viewer”, have many unprotected articles, and no paywall enabled. I want to use email, twitter and copy link sharing so that many non-iPad users can view my content via a browser. Can I do this? (Understanding of course that I will be charged for downloads based on the formulas outlined.)
    How can I test this before making the certificates, product ID and hitting publish?  I want to see the user experience in the browser to see what overlays work and don’t work. Since the tools to make these choices are in the DPS Viewer Builder process, I couldn’t figure out a way to “preview” this.
    Is there a way? Am I making this more complicated than it actually is?
    I’m using CS5.5 for Mac, DPS Release 21, Enterprise Edition
    Thanks for your help.

    Yes, you can enable Web Viewer with email, twitter, and copy link sharing. If you're using v21, you need to create a 1024x768 folio using either PNG or JPG image format (not PDF). With v21, sharing articles from an iPad 3 doesn't work well in Web Viewer. With the upcoming v22 release, there will be better support for handling renditions, so you might want to hold off for a couple of weeks and test social sharing when v22 is available. (With the v23 release, it shouldn't be necessary to create a PNG/JPG folio -- any PDF folio will be uploaded to the Web Viewer server as PNG.)
    You can't test social sharing on your own content without using Viewer Builder to create a development app. You can test other apps that enable social sharing, such as Backpacker and DPS Tips. Unfortunately, for the DPS Tips app, I set a low paywall for demo purposes, so it's difficult to test multiple articles.
    You can read more about social sharing and its current limitations here:

  • Can you convert a folio created with jpg format to pdf format?

    I want to see pinch and zoom on some of the pages and it looks like I can't mix up pdf articles with pngs unless "automatic" knows the difference.

    If you are building a Single Edition publication you can read http://www.adobe.com/devnet/digitalpublishingsuite/articles/building-multi-rendition-artic les.html for details on how to use a single set of assets for both low and high resolution iPads.

  • Large folio file size

    We are half way through a book that comprises 100 single page articles. However it is already nearly 500 MB and this isn't sustainable.
    Does the following affect the file size:
    Is the Folio file size affected by the number of individual articles, would it be smaller if we had stacks of say 10 articles each with 10 pages rather than 100 single pages?
    Every page has a two picture (JPG) object state, the first image is an extreme elargement of the image that visible only for a about a second before the full frame image appears. Each page has a caption using Pan overlay that can be dragged into the page using a small tab.Does an Object State increase the file size over and above the images contained within it?
    We have reduced the JPGs to the minimum acceptable quality and there is no video in the Folio.
    Any ideas would be much appreciated?

    800 MB worth of video sounds crazy.
    Of course, a high number of videos can bring you to that.
    I saw bigger dps apps. I think the apple limit lies around 4 gb (remember,
    that is more than 25% of a whole 16 gb iPad)
    The mp4 video codec does a really good job while keeping the quality high.
    And the human eye is more forgiving to quality when it comes to moving
    images compared to still imagery.
    I wrote a collection of tipps and ideas how to reduce your file size.

  • Downsampling algorithm for JPG images in both PDF or automatic mode

    Hello,
    the question is: which algorithm is used when images are formatted by the Folio Builder in the Folio or Articles properties?
    My question is focused on the static images and I know that it would be better to resize images before placing them in the document.
    The question is also related to the image format.
    If I use a non-compressed format such as the TIFF (without compression) then the images are re-formatted as JPG or PNG.
    We know that both automatic and PDF option saves images as JPG or PNG depending by the transparency contained in the graphics.
    After this considerations I think that save static images as PNG before placing them in InDesign document could be a solution to obtain images without any compression.
    Am I right?

    Thanks Ankit,
    but in the article there is no response to my question: which algorithm is used to downsample the images and wich is the best way to mantein the images quality in both Automatic and PDF.
    This is the problem.
    Thanks

  • Folio isn't in the folio producer. But its still being published.

    I deleted a folio but its still showing up in the app. I have tested creating a new folio. And i am able to publish and unpublish. I have read that it might be a ghost or frozen folio.

    Hi Neil, I've attached a jpg of the problem "Phantom" folio. Im able to publish and unpublish the other folios with out any problems. The folio in question is a different matter. As I can not unpublish since its not showing up on the list of folios. Hopefully the screenshot will narrow things down.

  • Ways to decrease the folio size

    hi there,
    just designing the second issue of a monthly i-pad magazine, folio size = 425Mb and looking for ways to reduce it to arround 350Mb.
    What I've already done
    - compressed al video to mp4 - 720p with Adobe Media Encoder (using the 720p-25frames ipad setting found there)
    - folio + all articles and as much as possible of the interactive elements are set to pdf
    But all images (a lot) I'm using are imported as large resolution PSD files.
    Someone about whether I can reduce the file size by scaling them down and saving them as jpg ? I thought InDesign did this for me but maybe I'm wrong.
    All other suggestions about reducing folio size are more then welcome.
    Thanx in advance,
    Herman Belgy

    There is a limit to how much you can decrease the file size. Static elements in PDF folios are rasterized at 108ppi (half way between 72 and 144). The videos are really your best bet but at a certain point you'll kill the quality.
    You could stream them but that will require the user to be on line.

  • Preview on device from folio overlays panel is fuzzy

    I'm new to DPS so I'm sure there's a setting somewhere that I haven't checked, but why is the text fuzzy on my iPad when I preview my article? I have a retina iPad, my document is 1024x768, and I'm using the "Preview on XYZ iPad" function at the bottom of the Folio Overlay panel. What am I doing wrong? It looks fine if I preview the folio in the Folio Builder panel--what's the difference?

    When you click Preview at the bottom of the Overlays panel, you preview the layout, not the article or the folio. When you preview the layout, you get PNG or JPG image format, not PDF. For the best preview experience, use the Folio Builder panel to preview either the article or folio. That way, you use the image format of the articles. If your article uses PDF image format, it likely won't be fuzzy. And if you see something fuzzy when previewing, let us know, and we'll help you figure it out.

  • Image Resizing and Folio Renditions

    Hello!
    I'm building a pretty large app, and I'm concerned about the size of some of my larger images.
    A. Is it typical to build both 1024x768 and 2048x1536 renditions? Or should I just build the 1024x768 and size my full page images for the 2048x1536? Or will it automatically view them at 72dpi?
    B. If I do build both renditions, can I keep the two different layouts in the same file with alternate layout? Or would I have to build a separate folio like I would for the iPhone?
    C. What is the best format to save images in? I've always saved as jpgs, but if I'm able to save as a gif or png for file size, I'd prefer to do that. But I don't want to compromise the integrity of the photo either.
    Thank you!

    Depending on the format of your files, you need not go into JAI. You may be able to do what you want with ImageIO.
    You just need to load the image, select the part you want, then check the length to width ratio to make sure it is appropriate, if not, then adjust it as such.
    If you want to get a 100, 100 thumb from a 1024, 768 image you can do this:
    BufferedImage bi = new BufferedImage(100, 100, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
    Graphics2D g = bi.createGraphics();
    g.drawImage(my1024x768, 0, 12, 100, 75, Color.BLACK, null);
    g.dispose();please note, that to get 1024 shunk up to 100, you need to divide by 10.24, when you do the same to the height of the image, you get 75, this leaves 25 pixels--so I centered the image at 12.
    to save the thumb in JPG:
    File f = new File(myFileNameAndPath);
    f.createFile();
    ImageIO.write(bi, "JPEG", f);**WARNING** untested code.

  • Elements increases JPG file size - case # 0181346249

    I just asked this of Adobe. Couldn't find anything this specirfic in the forums, anyone have anything on this? Thanks in advance.  Lee
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    On/about 12/4/09 I upgraded Elements from 6 to 8. Since that date I have discovered that the file size for all JPG files managed by Elements has been increased by 5304, 5309 or 5310 bytes. This has complicated my backup scheme, now the backup program wants to replace all said files, in excess of 16,000 pictures.
    What is Elements changing?
    Is this documented?
    The attached JPG shows the original file on right, the Elements managed file on left. The far right column shows the file size increase.
    It may be that you have the Auto-Analyzer set to run automatically, and it has added some additional metadata (EXIF) to each of your files.
    The PSE 8 Auto-Analyzer has some severe problems, and I recommend that you never run it. It will corrupt your map locations, split your video clips into "scene groups" that are hard to get rid of, modify the date/time of every file, crash frequently, make your computer very sluggish, and litter your folders with temporary files:
  • Animation didn't work in folio preview!
    i create animation like fade in and out when on click
    it work well in the "preview" window..
    however, when i upload it to folio and click the another "preview" (on the left lower position of the folio creator)
    it did't come up with any animation ....meanwhile ....the overlay creator 's action like pan and zoom work well...
    is there any method can solve it ?
    Thanks
    JK
    Hello Cube S JK
    I'm currently dealing with this problem as well.
    it seems the "preview" screen in indesign is just the flash-export preview and not the folio export preview.
    If you want to do a folio preview hit the preview buton in the folio menu.
    the animation menu is a menu filled with options and "tweens" for swf exports not for exports to adobe folio.
    you could try to make animated objects using html 5 and add them as html content....
    BUT: for as far as I can read the forums there seem to be problems with animations in html 5 content as well
    And the .gif option doesn't work to since your folio gets exported in either jpg, png or pdf format.
    I'm going to contact Adobe to allow users like you and me to add these so called tweens to folio publications, but as of yet there is no way to make animations for your digital magazines or books other than the standard things (360 degree spin and such)
    Peter
