JPG to DNG mistake

I was messing around with importing fresh install of LR 1.1 and ended up converting jpg to DNG for some files. Other than they are much larger is their any other issues. If I export as JPG high quality will they be the same or should I go looking for backups, I have them but not organised as well as they should be ;-), hmm looks like some time issues depending on which of the families cameras was used, not sure if this is a LR issue or happened in the conversion as I see others having problems :-(

I personally like DNG for archiving and do convert jpeg to DNG.
I like the idea of having everything wrapped up in a dng container and never having to touch the jpegs again. Even accidentally rotating a jpeg will degrade the quality and if you intend to do further non-destructive editing in lightroom you will be continually adding to file metadata unless you have deselected that option in catalog preferences. Even then you will get a separate sidecar (XMP) file and DNG simply frees you from the worry of those ever getting separated from the parent file or deleted altogether.
Adobe continues to invest in the DNG format; so you can also take advantage of future developments. For example LR4 will introduce the option of fast load data for DNG’s which will make for greater editing efficiency.
As Paige says you will use more disk space, and a jpeg baked in camera will never be more than an 8 bit file, even within a DNG. So it’s a matter of personal choice.

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.

  • Jpg and DNG brightness problem - CS2!

    I am using CS2 with camera raw plug-in 3.7
I am running Windows XP SP3.
I open a DNG file. I do NOT do any processing whatsoever!
I just immediately save it as a JPG file at maximum quality.
However, when I view the two files with the Irfanview picture browser, the JPG seems to be washed out compared to the DNG!
    Can anyone explain this?

The underlying problem that many people have trouble coming to grips with is
    variants of:
'Why does my RAW image look different from the
    1) JPEG
    2) in camera Preview
    3) manufacturer's version
    4) etc...?'.
The question is simple but the answer is not. The answer touches on color space,
white balance, default Camera RAW settings and processing, camera profiles,
etc... Many of the threads here go into really good depth in examining each of
these topics but I don't recall seeing anything that approaches a comprehensive
answer, especially since we now have the DNG Profile Editor.

  • How to convert from NEF to JPG not dng Lr 3.3

Using Lr 3.3 for the first time. It downloaded my picture files as nef fine but then it wants to convert to dng? It does not give me the option to save as jpg? Some files I want as jpg... Can you tell me what needs to be done to acheive this.
    Thanks,

You first have to import the raw files into LR then you can make adjustments in the Quick Develop tab in the Library Module or in the Develop Module.
You can then use the export function from the file menu to create your image file, tiff, psd or jpeg. The option in the import function to convert the raw file to DNG (raw format) does not create an image file it is still the raw data.

  • Importing jpg and dng pairs-

With my M8 set for dng+jpg I canot find the jpg's after import. If I try to import from the file (which shows the jpg's to be present) LR tells me that the dng's are already there and does nothing. When I open the card it also shows the jpg's to be present. Can anyone enlighten me?

As you state there have been multiple threads on this since I have been using beta 3. I came across this situation when I was trying to compare how LR raw conversion compared with in camera JPG's. When I first tried to import both files into LR only the raw file was imported. I then separately imported the JPG file into the same folder.
What happened was that LR treated both files as if they were one which ment that LR was not able to distinguish the different extension. This resulted in any edits you made in the develop module with the raw file were also applied to the JPG when it was opened in LR and vice versa. Talk about confusion in trying to compare!!
I reported to Adobe as a bug but the reply came back that it was not considered a bug but it was how the program was designed and I would have to make a name change to one of the files or move the JPG's to a different folder.
I think Adobe should post this in the FAQ thread.

  • Keyword and IPTC Syncronisation of 13.000 jpg and dng pictures

I have one catalogue with 13.ooo DNG pictures. In this catalogue I put 13.ooo JPG pictures with the same file name. Difference of cause .dng and .jpg As all JPG pictures have all IPTC informations and keywords too, I want to import these informations to the DNG files. Up to now I click one jpg picture at the time, synchronize IPTC Datas with the corresponding dng. Then copy keywords and paste them into dng. 13.ooo pictures. Is there any simple method to do this job? Thanks a lot.

Not sure why this is happening this way but may be closing PSE processes which access and work upon files in the background might make a difference.
Please launch Organizer and click Edit >> Preferences >> Media Analysis and turn off all checkboxes.
From the task manager, kill the following exes if running-
    ElementsAutoAnalyzer
    Adobe Photoshop File Agent
    Dynamic Link Manager
repeat your workflow and check if the issue still happens.
    Thanks

  • Lightroom 5.5 Camera RAW 8.5 importing Canon G16 RAW (and jpg) to dng results in blank grey slides in Library. Works individually in Development but reverts to blank in Library. Colour management is set on sRGB. Also reports error on backup and fails to b

All the other pix in the library are fine.  I'd really appreciate a solution.

I tried replying by e-mail and it hasn't come through, so I'll reply using the web forums, and there may eventually be two replies with similar suggestions...
The second part of your issue got truncated, so you might want to include what else you said in a reply.
Regarding the gray thumbnails, this is usually a bad display profile, but can also be a corrupted previews cache.
dj_paige already posted a link to a page about changing the monitor profile to sRGB, although perhaps you’ve done that.
The other thing that could be wrong is your previews cache may be corrupted.  The way to fix that is to delete the previews cache and let LR start a new one.  If you don’t know where your catalog is, look in the LR Preferences / Catalog Settings and the path is indicated on one of the panels.
Using Explorer or Finder, go to the folder that has your catalog in it and your previews cache will be a folder called:
         catalogname Previews.lrdata
You should exit LR and then rename that folder to have a different name (using Explorer/Finder) and then restart LR.  You could delete it, too, but if renaming doesn't fix the problem then you can just rename it back and have your old previews, again.
It is possible that there is some other problem that would be more obvious if we could read the rest of your message that was truncated.

  • JPGS not converting to DNGs

    Hi,
When trying to convert JPGs to DNG is it currently failing.
    Steps:
    1. Select the JPG images in Grid view
    2. Go to Library, and choose Convert Photo to DNG
    3. Untick Only convert RAW files, click OK
    4. The conversion starts and the DNG files shows in the Grid view with an exclamation in the top right corner of the image.  Clicking on the exclamation displays "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.  You will not be able to make adjustments to the photo".
    5.  If I convert the JPG to JPG within Lightroom and then convert the new JPG to DNG, it works.  Why is that?
Please advise if I need to submit samples of the JPEGs and DNG.
    Thanks,
    Kreeson N

    MinerFortyNiner,
Before you burn the playlist for your mp3 CD, make sure that "Kind" is visible as a column. If it is not, go to View > Options and check it. Then you can verify that it *only contains mp3s*.
Note that when iTunes converts an AAC to mp3, it is actually creating a second file in mp3 format. (That is why you saw "duplicates.") It adds the new mp3 to the library, but does not replace the original version in any playlist. So unless you manually change it, your playlist still has the unconverted (AAC) files in it.
Pls let us know if this solves the issue.

  • Changing old JPG originals to DNG

I've read where it is a good idea to change the RAW to DNG. I've also heard some discussions on why it would be a good idea to have all your originals transformed to DNG's as well. Of course it will take up a lot more room.
Most of my originals are JPG from before taking RAW. The RAW have been changed.
What are your thoughts on changing all the JPG originals to DNG? I have a lot of originals so it would take some time, but not an impossible project.
    Thanks, Sue

    >THere is another thread that covers this extensively.
Can you point to it Don? I haven't found any discussion of the JPG to DNG question. My feeling is that on the one hand it keeps everything neet and tidy (no sidecars) but on the other habd the overhead from larger DNG file size is huge.

  • DNG image quality in iPhoto

I have recently acquired a Zeiss Photoscope (in effect, a spotting scope with an integrated camera) which records raw images as either JPG or DNG files or both. (I'm a birdwatcher who likes to take photos of them, not a photographer first and foremost). When I view the images in iPhoto 9.2, the highest quality JPG files are far superior to the DNG files, even though the JPGs are about 2 MB while the DNGs are 14 MB. The DNGs are obviously pixellated even at low ISO settings (50 or 100), while the JPG images appear sharp and show pixellation only when blown up digitally in iPhoto.
In some cases, I see evidence of chromatic aberration in the DNG images that is less evident in the JPG files, too.
Is there something about the way DNG files work with iPhoto that causes this? Is there recommended software for looking at DNG files that might eliminate the problem? Any other ideas about how to resolve this?

Even as an ardent Mac fanatic since 1984, I have to tell you that iPhoto is an unmitigated piece of cr@p when it comes to image quality, though it has certain hand-holding features that make it very attractive to photo amateurs.
The raw conversion, whether from a straight raw file or from a raw DNG file, will be far superior if you view them after converting/rendering them in Adobe software, either Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw.  The latter, a free plug-in, can be hosted either by the (very expensive) full version of Photoshop, or by the relatively inexpensive ($99.99) Photoshop Elements, although when hosted by Photoshop Elements it only offers a subset of the controls, adjustments and functionality of the very same plug-in when hosted by the full version of Photoshop.

  • Dng-Konvertierung in Bridge funktioniert nicht

Bin CS3-Neuling.

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats/Camera Raw.plugin
oder entsprechendes bei CS3, nicht jedoch im Photoshop-Plugin-Ordner

  • [.jpg image] is not a valid win 32 application

    PC Win Xp SP3
Prior to upgrading to CS5 (from CS4) I could couble click on any image, .jpg, .CR2, .DNG, .TIF, .BMP any image file anywhere on my computer and CS4 would open and open the image inside CS4. After upgrading to CS5 I get an annoying error message telling me "[.jpg image] is not a valid win 32 application" I find that hard to believe because all the images were valid Win 32 applications when I was using CS4. I then have to open CS5 and either drag the image to CS5 or Ctrl+O and find the image. It is not a crutial process but It makes be think there may be more amiss that just not being able to open images with a double click.

The fix for this ladies and gentlemen is to properly uninstall CS5 and reinstall it. I worked for a few hours today with an Adobe tech who used the remote access process and he tried everything I had tried on my computer to no avail and finally had to uninstall CS5 and reinstall. Although I was a bit surprised when he went to uninstall CS5 without deactivating it first. I stopped him as he move the pointer to "Remove" and told him he needs to deactivate CS5 before removal so I can reinstall it again. That would have been catastrophic. I lost all my actions I had created but I can build up the library again. So it is a relatively easy fix, jut do it.

  • All raw images unsupported from 20D (.CRW or .DNG)?

    Hello all,
I just imported 5,486 picture files in two formats: .JPG and .DNG, taken with two cameras, a Sony DSC-P10 point and shoot, and (the great majority) a Canon EOS 20D. The DNG files were converted from their .CR2 source files.
Aperture is showing 4,670 of the DNG files - all of them - as unsupported image format. I re-imported 100 of the original .CR2 raw files, and indeed, I get the same result.
I can view the imported files in Preview and iPhoto just fine. Adobe Camera Raw 2.4 (Photoshop 8) has no problems with them. However, despite the fact that the 20D is apparently supported, Aperture is not working with the 20D files in their original .CR2 or the converted .DNG. I'm at a loss.
Interestingly enough, when doing a file import, Aperture properly shows all the thumbnails and will stack them as well. Actually, it's not quite properly; the thumbnails are actually square and not auto-rotated, instead of the usual 3:2 or 2:3 aspect ratio.
Does anyone have any thoughts about what I could to, possibly, to restore these photos to work with Aperture and to be fully functional?
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hello again,
This is a related thread, it would seem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1261853&#1261853
It suggested quitting Aperture and restarting it. I did this. Now, previously imported images can be viewed. It takes about 10-30 seconds after selecting an image which was previously an "unsupported image format" image and shows up as a gray square to show a preview. Unfortunately, the preview is not properly rotated - it's always in landscape format despite the rotation hints in the file.
Importing a few more images imported properly, preview and rotation. I imported 7 .CR2 files into a new project and it was fine. However, I switched back to my previous (broken) project and then back to the working project, and my photos have disappeared. The sidebar still shows (7) versions in the project, but selecting the project shows no thumbnails nor pictures in the list view either. That's even more mysterious. Quitting and restarting Aperture did not bring those 7 photos back. They are in there, in the .aplibrary, but the UI doesn't show them. Indeed, after quitting and restarting, now the "were being fixed by clicking on them and waiting" images are back to permanently unsupported image format. So, I've not really gotten any further.
    Very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • DNG Codec makes Vista Indexing very slow?

    Hi,
I recently installed the DNG codec to preview my photos in Windows and I let Vista Search index all my storage. It was taking weeks and the number of indexed files was barely moving. I wasn't sure what it was so I started excluding folders from the index one by one. Eventually I realized that it was the Pictures folder which contains roughly 60GB of mixed JPG and DNG photos. I uninstalled the DNG Codec and now indexing is finished, including the Pictures folder, several hours later.
Vista Home Premium, 32-bit, 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 2.66MHz.
    Regards,
    Pavel

    I've got:
    4GB memory
Page File (virtual memory) is 7326M
    2.4GHz P8600 Dual core processor
    105 GB available disk space
video card is a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M
Those stats should surpass the minimum requirements with flying colors.
I've just noticed that ever since I've got Windows Vista, any menial task of moving (cut & paste) a 100KB file from one folder to another folder on my local PC could take minutes instead of milliseconds. Unzipping items also takes a ridiculous amount of time. I was thinking this slow vista file management might be causing the slow Oracle install.
I was hoping someone else might have see this issue before and can tell me where the "go-faster" flag is located.
    Thanks!

  • DNG icon issues for Bridge

Recently, some of my folders in Bridge CS3 have had images replaced by DNG icons.  Other folders still okay.  Not sure how to go about getting things back to images in folders like before.  Not a techie, so need really clear guidance!
    Thanks!

Hi Old Goose  (Where dod the name come from?)
If you have suddenly started finding DNG images in Bridge, then they are either being imported from your camera as DNG files, or you have converted RAW files into DNG.  I'm guessing you would know if it was the second.
Do you use Bridge to upload images from the camera to the computer?  In Bridge that means  File > Get photos from camera  which brings up this window:
You can see if Convert to DNG is ticked.  It might be that Bridge imports both JPG and DNG depending on how your camera is set.
