JPW2 12V connector on K9A board ?

First of all, as advised by several people here, I got myself a new PSU ; a 500W Zalman ZM-500HP (replaces Codegen 450W)
So, besides having a very quiet (and more reliable) PSU with a sexy blue led, I now have loads of plugs to connect ... so I noticed the previously unconnected 12V JPW2 (molex) connector on the board that "is used to provide power to stable the operation of graphics card".
From what I read here on the forum, it is not really necessary to connect it, bit it certainly won't hurt ... question is, does it power both PCI-express x16 slots or only the top one ??
At the moment I've got a GT430, but now that I have PCI-Express power plugs, I'm planning on getting something heavier.

Good question! And good you changed PSU, to a Zalman!
Some graphics cards pull more power than the first slot can provide.
Cards you use for SLI and Crossfire usually are of the "bigger" kind, and have their own power connection.
The power connection came about the same time as the rather power-hungry Nvidia series.
For the start-up process, already, the graphics slot need quite a lot of power.
For those reasons I believe it is the first slot only that gets some extra juice.

  • RMAs, and 12v connectors!!!!

Ok i keep e-amiling MSI about my RMA status and still no word! It's been 12 Days!!!!! Has anyone experienced such long delays?? Can they atleast send me some feedback?
Anyways this is all because of their crappya$$ mobos.
My k7n2 delta-l started making the most annoying noise since the day i installed windows XP. I swear, i was about to hang myself to rid myslef of the noise that i still hear to this day! That damn 12v connector is a living hell....
Anyways when ever i get my mobo back from the lifelessness of MSI, should i connect it?? I heard the mobos need this power help....?
    Thanks guys....

    hi
the 12v power connector to the cpu is to provide stability but is not needed to use the computer.
some people like me have connected it and some people have not.
try to unplug it and hope for the best.
    bye

  • Is the 12v connector really needed???

    Hello there!
Could some one please tell if the little 12v power connector is needed. I've looked at all the stickies here, tried MSI's website, looked at loads of topics in here and i'm still confused about this
I read in one thread that a person had fried there board after 3 weeks because they had plugged that 1 in!! Then when i read reviews about this board they always plug it in!
In the quick setup guide that came the board it does'nt mention the 12v plug. The manual gives the impression im supposed to use it but just says that it supplies power to the cpu. In the FAQ's on MSI's website they say that its not required to boot the system, this is not much of an answer IMO.
I have tried it with and without the 12v and i cant tell any difference either way!
I woundered weather it was only needed if you wanted to overclock (which i havent done yet)
SOOOOOO..... Kind people, do i need it or not?
Thanks in advance for any response

    conspiracy!!  LOL
Thanks to you both for that!  thats put my mind at rest
one more thing that im a tad consurned about is the heat that the chipset is given off! well its the 2 little heatsinks beside the main diamond shape one that get HOT! i cant really explain how hot, erm if it was much hotter i would proberly burn myself  my temps are normal tho - sys-34/38c, cpu-44/54c
the thing i find weird is thats its the 2 little heatsinks are alot hotter then the main diamond shaped 1!!
i've just upgraded my board from an old ecs 1 so its proberly just im not used to newer hotter chipsets!
can someone just confirm that these nforce chipsets run very hot!!
    Thanks again
P.S its only very hot when doing intensive stuff like playing games! when just browsing the net or whatever, the temp seems fine!

  • K7T Turbo2, Aux 12v connector

Anyone know if the 12v 4-pin connector is absolutely necessary?  My power supply doesn't have one, and I'm at the end of my budget.  Will the board run stably without one?  I've never run into one on an Athlon board, before.  Thanks

It isn't necessary on any of MSI's current socket-a boards, but may help stability in some cases.
Its purpose is to augment the PSU's ability to feed +12v power to the motherboard because each contact of an ATX power connector can only carry 6-10 amps safely.
Mobo makers are free to use this additional +12v feed as they wish so any other blanket statement about what it is used for must be taken with a large grain of salt.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum - 12v connectors

    Hello again,
This motherboard is the best I've used yet but I still have some questions about it, ( K9N2 SLI Platinum (MS-7374 ver1.2) ) .
        1. If I do not intend to use the on-board video and have it disabled in CMOS Setup do I still need to connect the 12v+5v IDE molex power connector to the motherboard connection required to power the onboard video?
        2.  Above the processor, (looking at the board mounted in a tower,) there is a space for 2x 12v P4 connectors, half of that 8-pin connector was covered by a temporary "cap".  I only connected my power supply to the half that was uncovered -- Can someone explain when/why the other half should be used? Please refer to my signature for what processor, motherboard, PSU, ram and graphics card I am using.
Thanks in advance for all advice, I  was unable to find answers to these two questions via MSI documentation or Googling.

Its recommended to be connected, also its not related to the onboard video.

If you PSU has 8pin CPU power cable use it, else use 4 pin.

  • Late 2006 24" imac - broken sata connector on logic board

How to fix broken sata port on logic board? It snapped off, apparently it wasn't soldered on very securely. Now I can only boot my machine with external usb drive. Help!

    Hi Aaron
Bummer, I only see 4 options.
    1. Continue to run from an External HD, FireWire 400 is faster than USB.
    2. Find someone with the tools and skill to re-solder a connector back onto the logic board.
+(problem is, not to many folks can or will, because it's nearly impossibly)+
    3. Buy a new Logic Board for $600+ > http://www.welovemacs.com/apim242inco26.html
+(problem is, that the iMac isn't worth $600)+
    4. Buy a New or Refurbished iMac.

Personally I'd put my money on #4, instead of spending another dime on a 4 year old machine that also needs a Graphic's Chip and who knows what else.

  • IMac display connector on logic board

Does anyone know the part number or part description for the connector on the logic board that connects to the display (tdms) cable on an iMac G4? On the logic board, where the old one was, is the notation "j10". The person I got this iMac from tried upgrading the hard drive and accidentally ripped the connector off because they didn't unclip the tdms cable from the drive first.
I figure soldering a new connector on should be a pretty easy fix, but I'm not sure what part to order. I know a few places that I could probably order it from, once I know what I'm ordering.

Seems to me a similar question has appeared in these boards, and
there are a few people who are regulars, that may know the answer.
Been awhile since I've seen the posts regarding this topic, so I can't
just put a link to the correct discussion at this time. Maybe the post
could appear as part of a search; such a dragnet approach may be
daunting and the yield well beyond the scope of your needs.
A slightly different discussion than I recall, but near the neighborhood:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9096347
Is there a close-up picture here of the connector in question?

You may be able to contact this source via his Discussions
Profile and ask more indepth about your connector questions.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    closet on the floor, but have not gotten time to look into it.}

  • Need Info to repair broken power switch connector on logic board

    Hi folks,
I had some bad luck this week. The power switch connector broke off my daughter's Ibook logic board during a HD upgrade attempt. Unfortunately, it pulled enough of the etch that I can't determine where the connections use to go.
I would like to salvage the board. So, if anyone has access to a schematic for the G3 Ibook, 14" 900Mz logic board, I would appreciate some info about the circuit. Specifically, to what components does the switch connect. I already identified one side is grounded and the other side is pulled up to 3V through a 1K resistor, but that etch also went somewhere else. I suppose the gate of a FET transistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps someone with a dead logic board could trace the circuit with an ohm meter.
    Regards,
    Spencer

    Hi spencer,
Apple doesn't make circuit diagrams available, sorry. I've done or had done component level repairs of iBook logic boards before, usually to re-attach connectors which have come off, but unlike yours, these ones have all come off leaving the trace on the board.
The fact the traces have come off isn't good, as you can probably tell. It's also a 4 layer board, so where the vias go is important. I have a couple of dead logic boards from 500,600 and 700mhz iBooks. The 14 inch logic boards are essentially the same as the 12 inch ones. These pictures are of the area of a 700mhz logic board.

  • VST connector to IR board broke during upgrade

    Hello,
Attempted to add 2nd HD to 2011 2.3 MacMini. I broke the VST connector to the IR board. Yet, it is working as I am using it as I type this to everyone.
I do hear "beeps" every so often so machine realizes that not all is right and white light in front does not work. As it stands, the VST connector is NOT connected to the IR board. I was told by someone that I might as well get a new one as whole IR board would need to be replaced. Yet, it works... This is for the "techies" out there. Can this MacMini survive or will it eventually short out and/or catch fire. Thank you in advance.

got ahold of OWC(macsales) and was told that mini will still work though no IR connection available. So, what is this IR connection as I do not seem to have used it previously?  Regardless, I can save $ on either a new or used macmini. Also, thanks to "Lousyfool" as he directed me to the site "Ifixit". Had not seen it previously. Thank you.
    Have a great day!

  • Need Advice, Concerns 12v connector on MSI K Diamond

I didnt have a 12v power connector that goes into the mobo, so I used the 4 pin p4 connector instead ( i heard that this would run ), it has worked and I am currently waiting for the converter, though from what i hear only on wire is providing 12 volts compared to the 2 that the p4 connector gives. Is there anything I should be concerned about. I don't plan on overclocking so I doubt the CPU will need the extra juice. Also would this harm my computer?

the mobo works fine with the 4 pin connector instead of the 8 pin connector. doesn't matter of you OC or not, that connector should be plugged in the mobo anyway.

  • Power Button Connector Come off board

    JH,
    I don't have a 900 G3 iBook here (BTW 14 or 12"?)
What I do have is an 800 MHz G3 12" and the picture of the power socket is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/b345hq
My trace out of the two points is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/dhc2sq
Now I take NO responsibility for the accuracy of these two trace outs.
    I have an 800 12" board and yours is a 900 ?" board.
This will give you an idea of how to do it.
Here's a long discussion detailing some of my methods to effect this repair.
    http://tinyurl.com/d799xs
Note that my methods have evolved during this post. Toward the end I recommend the the use of "grain of wheat" wire. I like this a lot better, it's smaller and easier to handle than CAT 5 wire. It's also one wire. Not all grain of wheat wire will be like this.
So the other end of those two wires are attached to the original power contacts of the torn off socket and the normal plug is plugged into that. Proper insulation practice should be used. I use shrink tubing.

  • 12v ATX Power Connector

Ive just modded my new power supply to fit my bespoke case, but the ATX 12v power connector(4pin) has a fault.
when connected it causes nasty noices through the speaker system like its got a break in the wires from the PSU to the connector on the board.
    The question is......
I havent got it connect at the mo, the pc is running ok so do i need to use it??????

    2x Diamondmax plus9 120GB HDs (sata)
    cd-r/dvd combo
    2 case fans
    neon lite
PS cant take the PSU back its got no case anymore

    the 20 pin atx has 5x 5v feeds but only 1x 12v
this is because in the past 5v feed the vga card and the cpu
now modern vga cards lie yours feed of the 12v as does the cpu
now a pin on the atx moules i rated to 6a max giving 72 watts max
many amd cpu pull that on their own
this is why these and other boards have the extra 2x 12v feeds

  • Does anyone connect the ATX 12V power connector?

Does anyone connect there power connector to the ATX 12V connector? The 12V power connector is used to provide power to the CPU, or is that what the 20-pin connecter is for? The 12V connecter is usually next to the socket and has 4 pins. thx for the help  8)

plug the 4 pin in it should be more stable

    HI
im just in the middle og my crossfire build.
i have connected my two gfx-cards with all the pwr connectors.....and still i have the ATX 6 pin connector on the board, in the manual it say it for power to the gfx...do i need it plugged in......its because if i HAVE to i need to install it with a adabtor, and i dont like the adaptor ???

     What PSU do you have?
If you need to use an adapter then use one, not all PSU have the required built in plugs for everything so adapters are sometimes required. I've had to use them in the past with no problems.
