JRE 1.1 AWT / 1.3 Swing Internationalization Problems. Please Help!!

This is driving me crazy. I ended up distilling down a bug in a big program to a few lines of code. I was then able to extract that code to a small program to reproduce the problem.
I am running JRE 1.3 with Swing. But the program I want to run is 1.1 with AWT. (I use a online 1.1 compiler to compile that program.)
Here is the 1.1 AWT program:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.util.*;
import java.lang.*;
class Awt {
public static void main(String s[]) {
Label label = new Label("\u65e5\u672C\u8A9E");
label.setFont(new Font("MS Gothic", Font.PLAIN, 24));
Frame frame = new Frame();
frame.add(label);
frame.pack();
frame.show();
When I run it, I get blocks instead of Japanese characters.
But when I port it to 1.3 and Swing, it displays properly. The code for that is:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.util.*;
import java.lang.*;
class Swing {
public static void main(String s[]) {
JLabel label = new JLabel("\u65e5\u672C\u8A9E");
label.setFont(new Font("MS Gothic", Font.PLAIN, 24));
JFrame frame = new JFrame();
frame.getContentPane().add(label);
frame.pack();
frame.setVisible(true);
Can anyone help me figure this out? I don't want to download JRE 1.1 (and replace my 1.3) just for this program. And it would be too cumbersome to rewrite the program into Swing.
Also, it can't be a font problem because my MS Gothic works in the 1.3 Swing version.
I have already changed the font.properties.ja file to font.properties.

You asked this same question 2 hours ago.

Don't clutter the forum by posting multiple questions on the same topic.
In fact this is you 3rd posting on this topic and you didn't list to point 2 and 3 from my reply in you previous posting, so why should I try helping again.
By the way you can't compare:
if (e.getSource() == "one")
getSource() returns an Object not a String.
The correct way to test which button was click was given to you in your 4th last posting. So you have at least 4 postings on this topic.
Now isn't this difficult trying to have a conversation when you have 4 posting going on the same subject?
Of course you can also read the Swing tutorial on "How to Use Buttons" for another way to test buttons. This solutions allows you to test for a String:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/button.html
However, I recommed the suggest from your 4th last posting.

• Moving a TextField in Swing.Possible?please help

Hi all,
I'm working on this application to create textfields in a page and resize and reposition them as necessary using the mouse(Just like dragging and dropping components in Visual Basic). Is it possible to provide such a functionality for a Textfield in java? If so how? If you do have some reference sites, please let me know. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
if you just need a simple framework:
I've created a customizer framework for such tasks: Move and resize components with the mouse and allow further customizations. "Snap-to-grid"-feature included! Maybe you find it useful as a base. (It's open source!)
I started to write a tutorial (still under construction!):
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/tutorial/swing/customizer/index.html
For adding components see:
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/api/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/CustomizerBar.html
To customize properties use:
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/api/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/JCustomizerPropertyTable.html
Register it to the SelectionManager of the JCustomizerPane and set the CustomizableProperties-property of the JCustomizer objects.
Also have a look at the subclasses of JCustomizer.
E.g. there are
customizers for images & shapes:
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/api/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/JXIconCustomizer.html
a label customizer with inline editing:
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/api/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/JLabelCustomizer.html
a line customizer:
http://softsmithy.sourceforge.net/lib/docs/api/org/softsmithy/lib/swing/JLine2DCustomizer.html
And there are many classes providing support for menu- and toolbar-actions. (Incuding support for some of the "Java Look and Feel Graphics Repository" actions.)
Look at the *.swing and the *.swing.action packages.
Just ask me if you don't find them.

• Swing: JTable. Please help me!

You will really make my day if you tell me how I do this.
I have a JTable. In my JTable there are 3 columns (String, Calendar, Calendar), and my problem is I need to write a pretty cute Date in the interface (11/11/07 00:00), and I need to get this pretty date as a Calendar to pass it to my Object Evento.
I know I have to implement a class extending DefaltTableCellRenderer, but how do I implement it? And how I associated the JTabel with this cellRenderer I made?
Here is my TableModel:
class TabelaDeEventos extends AbstractTableModel{
        private List<Evento> listEventos;
        public TabelaDeEventos(List<Evento> listEventos){
            this.listEventos = listEventos;
        private String[] colunas = {"Nome do Evento","Data inicial","Data Final"};
        public int getColumnCount(){
            return 3;
        public int getRowCount(){
            return this.listEventos.size();
        public String getColumnName(int coluna){
            return colunas[coluna];
        public Object getValueAt(int rowIndex, int columnIndex) {
            Evento evento = this.listEventos.get(rowIndex);
            Format formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm");
            switch(columnIndex){
                case 0:
                    return evento.getNome();
                case 1:
                    //Date data = evento.getDataInicio().getTime();
                    //return formatter.format(data);
                    return evento.getDataInicio().getTime();
                case 2:
                    //Date data1 = evento.getDataFim().getTime();
                    //return formatter.format(data1);
                    return evento.getDataFim().getTime();
            return null;
        public List<Evento> getListEventos() {
            return listEventos;
        public void setListEventos(List<Evento> listaEventos) {
            this.listEventos = listaEventos;
        public Class<?> getColumnClass(int columnIndex) {
            switch(columnIndex){
                case 0: return String.class;
                case 1: return Date.class;
                case 2: return Date.class;
            return null;
}obs: I know that in this code I puted column 1 and 2 as a Date, but actually supose to be a Calendar becase the atributes dataInicial e dataFim are Calendars.
Thanks a lot!

A variation on that: once you see the code in the tutorial, it's easy to modify
it to define a FormatRenderer that implements TableCellRenderer and has
a java.text.Format property you can set to format the text appropriately.
It's handy for more that just dates!

• Swing Arrays! Please help!!

how do you assign the values of an array to another array?
example:
String A[] = {"a","b","c"};
String B = {};//initial as an empty array
String text;
if text == null
how do you assign the values of array A to array B;
Please help
Thanks in advance

This should work
String[] A = {"a","b","c"};
String[] B = null;
boolean condition = true;
if (condition)
int size = A.length;
B = new String;
for (int i = 0; i < size; i++)
B[i] = A;
note that the B array size is not dynamic, you have to allocate memory when you come to know what size it should be. If you don t want to worry about these array problems, you can use a Vector or an ArrayList.

• Question about AWT vs. Swing

Say I'm building an applet. Which I am. Why should I choose AWT components over Swing? Or vise-versa? Swing seems "cooler" but I read somewhere that they're non-standard or harder to install/setup. Something like that.
Any advice before I begin hard work on my UI?

No version of ANY browser supports Swing without using the JRE. In most cases the page has to be converted to call the Java Plugin (which will be installed if the user has the JRE) before the JRE will be used to execute an applet. All the majority of users have is the VM that comes with their browser, which is stuck at something like JDK 1.1.6, which does not include Swing.
I would develop simple applets using only the AWT so that users can use the browser's VM. However if you have something more complex to do, I would require the user to have the Java Plugin, and then you can use Swing unto your Heart's Content.
Just some general thoughts about this issue:
I would like to move away from applets, and onto signed applications, which are downloaded and run from the user's machine. They can be kept up to date with the new Java WebStart (I believe), and will benefit from a newer VM, and more sophisticated language features. In addition it would lead to more users downloading the JRE, and the general spread of Java onto the client. I don't believe applets have a future beyond their current state, and let's face it, that state is quite lame.
Does anybody else have any thoughts on this issue?

• Changing AWT components to Swing components

I'm having a little trouble changing some AWT components to Swing components. I received an error message when I tried to run my program. I looked up the component in the java docs. But, I did not see the option the error was talking about. The error and the area of code is listed below. Thank you for any help you can provide.

• Changing custom AWT component to Swing component

I created my own AWT component. I'd like to change it to Swing component.
Does anyone know how to change or create a custom Swing component?
Please also provide some framework to develop a custom Swing component.

First try to know the difference between SWING & AWT. You can either adopt to SWING or AWT but be specific of what you want to do !
If you like to migrate from AWT to SWING ,then make the necessary changes in your coding.(ie, re frame things like , Frame to JFrame , Button to JButton ,JTextField to JTextField etc..)
For creating custom components ,say a component called MyLabel and you should design a class which extends JLabel and do whatever you like...
eg import javax.swing.*;
public class MyLabel extends JLabel
      MyLabel(String title)
         this.setTitle(title);
         this.setBackground(Color.white);
         this.setForeground(Color.blue);
}For more details go to java tutorials.

First things first. Next time please use the code formating tags when posting your code.
Secondly, we cant help you do your entire project or more specifically we cant do it for you. We can probably help you with one section at a time.
Thirdly, do not post your entire code. Create a Short, Self Contained, Compilable Example (SSCCE) that demonstrates the problem section, and that is independent of any third party libraries and can compiled instantly and tested.
Now, lets see if we can answer one problem here.
Ques 1. In the form I have one JComboBox of Country and other of State. Now I want it in such a way that whenI select a country from the Country JComboBox ,the corresponding states automatically appears in the State JComboBox.
Ans 1: Use an ItemListener or an ActionListener (javax.swing.event) for this. Once an item is selected, the event will be fired and then you populate your ComboBox with the requried data.
Ques 2. I need to add picture frame in the 6th tab so that the picture shows up when clicked browse and open.
Ans 2: You haven't created the JButton for the browse action, nor have you created the JLabel to show the picture in. Create the JButton, then the JLabel, attach an ActionListener to the button to listen for the button click, open a JFileChooser, select the image file, create an ImageIcon and pass the File object returned to it. Then call the JLabel.setIcon( the ImageIcon) to display the picture. You'll have to store the picture File information some where so can reference it when saving.
Ques 3.I need to add tables in 1st and 5th tab which shows up the details through database when added through several textboxes and combo boxes.
You need to do some reading. The Swing Tutorial has everything you need, from How to use Tables to How to connect to databases. There are also some examples in your JDK installation folder, ie, jdk/demos/jfc/tableExample. Here is the link to the swing tutorial on how to use Tables: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/table.html. You find other useful links there.

• Adf/swing binding problem

Hi all,
Friends i need your help.
I was a bit confused as i started developing an adf/swing application. I know that this project is not supported any more but i honestly believe that there are a lot of people still using it.
I've already faced with a number of problems and successfully solved them but the one is really strange.
Before describing it let me ask one preliminary question. It’s very important for me, but if it is too much …. skip the first question since the second one is the most important.
1. I’m creating a multiframe application where I have one main window (with a desktop pane) which does not include any bindings and is used for invoking internal frames only which in their turn have been created by dragging and dropping data controls.
Since JDeveloper only allows generating skeletons for stand-alone frames and there is lack of information concerned with adf/swing developing I’m trying to fit the automatically generated code for my purpose by myself.
I obsessively ask some GURU to check my strategy and say whether I’m doing it right.
First I create the BindingContext object in the main frame:
BindContext ctx = newBindingContext();
public MainFrame() {…………
try {
JUMetaObjectManager.setErrorHandler(new JUErrorHandlerDlg());
JUMetaObjectManager mgr = JUMetaObjectManager.getJUMom();
mgr.setJClientDefFactory(null);
ctx.put(DataControlFactory.APP_PARAM_ENV_INFO, new JUEnvInfoProvider());
ctx.setLocaleContext(new DefLocaleContext(null));
HashMap map = new HashMap(4);
map.put(DataControlFactory.APP_PARAMS_BINDING_CONTEXT, ctx);
mgr.loadCpx("minit.org.view.DataBindings.cpx" , map);
DCDataControl app = (DCDataControl)ctx.get("AppModule1DataControl");
app.setClientApp(DCDataControl.JCLIENT);
} catch (Exception ex) {
JUMetaObjectManager.reportException(null, ex, true);
System.exit(1);
Then I pass the BindingContext object into the internal frames constructors, i.e.
private void jMenuUnitVoc_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
this.getJMenuUnitVoc().setEnabled(false);
FormCreateUnitView1 unitVoc = new FormCreateUnitView1 (ctx);
unitVoc.setVisible (true);
this.deskTopPane.add (unitVoc);
Then I setup the panel binding for a particular JinternalFrame instance through the automatically generated setBindingContext() method:
public FormCreateUnitView1(BindingContext ctx) {
try {
this.setBindingContext(ctx);
} catch (Exception ex) {
JUMetaObjectManager.reportException(null, ex, true);
System.exit(1);
This predefined setBindingContext () method looks like this:
public void setBindingContext(BindingContext bindCtx) {
if (panelBinding.getPanel() == null) {
panelBinding = panelBinding.setup(bindCtx, this);
registerProjectGlobalVariables(bindCtx);
panelBinding.refreshControl();
try {
jbInit();
panelBinding.refreshControl();
} catch (Exception ex) {
panelBinding.reportException(ex);
panelBinding instance variable is declared by default as
private JUPanelBinding panelBinding = new JUPanelBinding("FormCreateUnitView1PageDef");
when the internal frame is getting closed the panel binding is released:
public void doDefaultCloseAction() {
_popupTransactionDialog();
panelBinding.releaseDataControl(); statusBar.release();
MainFrame myFrame = (MainFrame)this.getDesktopPane().getParent().getParent().getParent().getParent();
myFrame.getJMenuUnitVoc().setEnabled(true);
super.doDefaultCloseAction();
Why I’m asking about this is because I met another syntax which is known to be commonly used:
Something like this:
this is the code I use to (re)create the panel,
the setBindingContext method.
public void setBindingContext(BindingContext bindCtx)
String detail2BCName = "myName";
if (bindCtx.get(detail2BCName) == null)
DCBindingContainerDef bcdef = (DCBindingContainerDef) JUMetaObjectManager.getJUMom() .findLoadedObject("mypackage." + detail2BCName);
DCBindingContainer bc = bcdef.createBindingContainer(bindCtx);
bc.setName(detail2BCName);
bindCtx.put(detail2BCName, bc);
// ... then calls to jbInit etc.
this is the code I use to release the binding when
the window is closed
getPanelBinding.release();
getPanelBinding.getBindingContext().remove(superPanelBinding.getName());
…but this syntax is badly documented, so I’m a bit confused about which is right… my code works pretty fine (all master and detail frames are synchronized and all that…) except for one issue I’m going to describe.
I’m waiting for your opinions….please help make it clear.
THE MAIN PROBLEM
2. I’ve got a master/detail internal frame. When I make any changes in it and then commit them through a navigation bar I get the following exception as I try to close it later through the standard close icon:
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException

… few things
-1. If I commit a transaction through the popup dialog the exception doesn’t emerge.
-2. If I remove the “panelBinding.releaseDataControl(); statusBar.release();” from doDefaultCloseAction() method the exception doesn’t emerge but then I get another well-known exception as I try to reopen the internal frame.
-3. If I debug doDefaultCloseAction() method step by step the exception doesn’t emerge.
-4. Finally…. the exception doesn’t suspend the application it just goes on as if nothing has happened (the stack is only displayed on the console).
I learned about one similar problem here:
JClient Threading Bug in JUCtrlAttrsBinding?
but the bug described has been fixed in ver 10.1.3.3.
I'm using Jdeveloper 10.1.3.3
So, please ...please…please help me overcome it.
Best regards. Alex.

Sorry for being a bit annoying...
But .... no one has answered my question yet......though you promised...
Eventually I’ve somehow solved the trouble by replacing the “ panelBinding.releaseDataControl ” with
“ panelBinding.release(DCDataControl.REL_VIEW_REFS)
panelBinding.getBindingContext().remove(panelBinding.getName());”
In the doDefaultCloseAction() method
it seems like it works good now.
I reconstructed a bit my code
Now I’m invoking the internal frames this way:
private void jMenuDeptVoc_actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
FormCreateDeptView deptVoc = new FormCreateDeptView();
this.getJMenuDeptVoc().setEnabled(false);
deptVoc.setBindingContext(panelBinding.getBindingContext());
this.deskTopPane.add(deptVoc);
I looked through the following how to:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/howtos/10g/jcmultiform/index.html
there is an additional method there, which is invoked before creating a new frame where the binding container for the panel binding is created:
private void createDetailBinding()
String detailBCName = "DetailFormUIModel";
if (panelBinding.getBindingContext().get(detailBCName) == null)
DCBindingContainerDef bcdef = (DCBindingContainerDef)JUMetaObjectManager.getJUMom().findLoadedObject("sample.DetailFormUIModel");
DCBindingContainer bc = bcdef.createBindingContainer(panelBinding.getBindingContext());
bc.setName(detailBCName);
panelBinding.getBindingContext().put(detailBCName, bc);
But since createBindingContainer(BindingContext) method has been deprecated in 10.1.3 i skipped this step.
Nevertheless my program is working now I still wonder if the way I’m doing it is right.
Thanks. Alex.

• Please help...Problem with 3D Applet using JRE 1.5

Hi all,
I have an applet which uses sun opengl 1.3.1 plugin to render some 3D graphics. It is working fine with JRE 1.4.2_06, but not showing the 3D graphics with the latest JRE 1.5 release. I tried to repaint using available API with no success.
Please help asap,
Thanks in advance
prasad

I wonder if you have the same problem as me... Maybe we can find a solution for us both, no need for me to open a new thread for this topic then...
I wrote an applet using Swing and compiled it using JavaSDK 1.4.x. I also installed the 1.4.x JRE for both of my test browsers. In Mozilla 1.1 the applet displays properly all the time. In IE6 SP1 it sometimes works as intended but sometimes the applet simply stops working, as per my Java Console somewhere after invoking the "start" method. Parts of the applet simply become gray and when I resize it - I have a JFrame in my applet - the whole JFrame becomes gray and does not respond to input nor it redraws itself. Shutting down IE does not close the JFrame(although the java console reports normal program termination and cleanup) and the only way to close it is through the task manager. I am using Windows 98SE btw.
Does it sound similiar to your problem? It happens ONLY with IE, not with Mozilla. Anybody has an idea on what it could be? I doubt there's an error in my code...

This code is from:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/applet/clientExample.html
and I get the error (when I compile):
package org.jdesktop.swingworker does not exist
Now, I've reinstalled the latest jdk and jde, and yet I still get this problem. I've taken a class on java, however, it didn't cover anything like this, so I'm a bit confused. Please help :(

Why do you have this in your code?
private class QuoteGetter extends
org.jdesktop.swingworker.SwingWorker<String, String> {The class you probably need is javax.swing.SwingWorker and its import is covered by your package import statementimport javax.swing.*;To post code, use the code tags --
Your Code
will display asYour CodeOr use the code button above the editing area and paste your code between the {code}{code} tags it generates.

• Swing expert asked for help!!!!!

I have the following problem:
I have created a BufferedImage, that contains 9 different jpg images (sticked together, so now it's one big picture, 720x720 pixels). The 9 images have a total size of 200 kb (like 22 kb per image). After creating this bufferedimage, I use the function getSubImage, to create a new image, 240x240 pixels. I then paint this within a JPanel (I use swing). When I do this, the screen is flickering like hell, and the memory java uses increases up to 75 MB, until the screen stops flickering, and the image is shown correctly (before that, it keeps showing only parts of the picture, which appear and disappear very fast)
What can I do about this? How is it possible that java uses up to 75 MB for displaying a jpg image around 22 kb after using getSubImage. I'm totally stucked. Please help me. If you want you can email me on [email protected] or just reply to this forum.
Thank you in all for spending your time on this one.
Kind regards,
Sebastiaan
