  • Help with speeding up Hadoop application with Jrockit vm

    Hi all,
This is Grace. I am using JRockit JVM to run some Hadoop tests. In the test, there are many short time(within 1 minute) processes running. Comparing with the Sun JVM (with -Xmx option only), the test is completed much more slowly by Jrockit JVM. I have already tried to adjust some of the Jrockit basic options, such as –Xmx, -XXaggressive and etc. But there is no big difference. Have anyone seen this problem before? And does anyone can offer some advices about optimization or tuning? Thanks a lot for your time and help.
Here is some basic information of the testing environment:
    OS: Redhat 5.3 x86_64
Sun vm version is 1.6.0_11 (64bits), Jrockit vm version is 3.1.0-1.6.0(64bits)
    Regards, Grace

Most of your objects are large and goes to the old space. When you are running with a nursery all large objects are allocated in the old space. (An object larger than 2k is typically considered large). This will result in a lot of GC of the old space. I guess that this is causing a lof of memCopyBlock() which is the performance blocker.
So, I have a few suggestions:
    * Always set initial heap size equal to maximum heap size. -Xms=Xmx (1024m in your case) Set the maximal heap size as large as possible (without resulting in page faults).
    * With such high amount of large objects you could profit a static GC, for example -Xgc:singlepar (or -Xgc:genpar with a very small nursery).
    * If the large objects in your application live shortly then you may still profit from using a nursery.
** Set GC strategy to -Xgc:genpar (or -Xgc:gencon) to get a nursery.
** You will also need to modify the threshold for large objects by setting: -XXlargeObjectLimit="a limit, a little larger than the size of your objects".
** Tune nursery size. You will probably have to test a few nursery sizes before you find the best suited nursery size
** I see that you tune TLA. TLA tuning is preferably combined with tuning the large object limit for example: -XXtlasize:min=4k, preferred=128k - XXlargeObjectLimit=4k
I would not use -XXaggressive if it does not give you performance improvements. The same for LazyUnlcoking - it gives a performance boost for some applications, but not all.

I already installed the JDK 7 64 (jdk-7u2-windows-x64) and use the generic file to install the Web Logic Server (wls1035_generic)

    Any help I will appreciate.
    Thank You,
    Raul.

Note that you are using the HotSpot JDK. The option -jrockit is only valid if you are using JRockit.
When you open setDomainEnv.cmd you see something like:
    if "%JAVA_VENDOR%"=="Oracle" (
         set JAVA_HOME=%BEA_JAVA_HOME%
    ) else (
         if "%JAVA_VENDOR%"=="Sun" (
              set JAVA_HOME=%SUN_JAVA_HOME%
         ) else (
              set JAVA_VENDOR=Oracle
              set JAVA_HOME=C:\bea\jrockit_160_29_D1.2.0-10
)which selects a certain JDK based on the set JAVA_VENDOR property.
You add the property JAVA_VENDOR above the first if statement, for example,
    set SUN_JAVA_HOME=
    set JAVA_VENDOR=Sun
if "%JAVA_VENDOR%"=="Oracle" (...)Also see if the SUN_JAVA_HOME property is set to the correct directory.

  • Steps to enable "-Xmanagement" option in JRockit JVM?

    Hello,
I am trying to enable the "-Xmanagement" option in the Jrockit JVM 1.4.2_04 to enable the management server to listen to the JVM running on our server. Therefore, we can use the JRA to profile our JVM in realtime, using the JRockit Management console.
We are running W2K3 and use the registry to pass all the necessary options (i.e. -classpath, verbose:gc, min/max heap size, -D options etc.) when starting the Weblogic service. However, when I attempt to add the -Xmanagement option to anywhere in the registry setting, the service will fail to start, regardless of where I place the option in the field.
If I cannot set this option, I recieve the below error when attempting to connect to the server via the management console ( I have tried various ports as well )

Below are the values from the registry key we are passing to the weblogic service.
We do not use any of the "Start(WLS)(Weblogic).cmd" scripts to start the Weblogic service, only the WSM (Windows Service Manager).
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
    Thanks for the assitance.

  • Unable to bypass jrockit option

    HI Gentlemen,
I have downloaded a good sample Applet/ADF program. It has been working A1 with my Java7 and JDeveloper 11.1.1.0.6. After installing Java and Fusion Middleware several times, now trying to execute the .jspx page with the builtin weblogic server always generates a java command with -jrockit, which is not available. I am completely blocked from further development. Can anyone help me, why it now complains about jrockit, which I do not use at all?
    Thank you, kind regards:

Configuring Domains to Use the Latest Version of JRockit
If you are using the JRockit SDK, after you install an upgrade patch or run an Upgrade installer, Oracle recommends that you upgrade your domains to use the latest production version of the JRockit SDK. Although the latest version of the JRockit SDK is installed by the upgrade patch or upgrade installer, your domains are not automatically configured to use it.
To configure your domains to use the latest production version of the JRockit SDK, edit the following file:
    For Windows:
    MW_HOME\domain_location\domains\domain_name\bin\setDomainEnv.cmd
    For UNIX:
    MW_HOME/domain_location/domains/domain_name/bin/setDomainEnv.sh
Replace all occurrences of the existing JRockit version with the latest production version of the JRockit SDK.
For example, if you are upgrading from WebLogic Server 10.3.2 to WebLogic Server 10.3.3, replace
    jrockit_160_14_R27.6.5-32
    with
    jrockit_160_20_D1.0.1-2119
You can determine the JRockit SDK version number to use for your WebLogic Server version by looking at the JRockit directory name in MW_HOME. The number to use is identical to the directory name.

    Please help me on this.
    Thanks,

Have you altered in any way your startWebLogic.sh, commEnv.sh (either one) or setDomainEnv.sh scripts? We had issues with customizations previously made that prevented the scripts from auto-detecting the JVM and choosing appropriate flags.
Another option is to forcefully set JAVA_VENDOR=Sun and export JAVA_VENDOR at the start of your startWebLogic.sh or setDomainEnv.sh scripts, to override the automatic JVM settings. You may then need to additionally set memory settings however.

Ok, it seems that you have used Hot Spot JDK, instead of Jrockit. Please make sure that you have downloaded the correct package for Jrockit.

  • -jrockit option

    Hi.
What' s the meaning of "-jrockit" start-up option?
    (ex. java -jrockit -xmx128m -xms128m ... )
I couldn't find the note about it in any guides or something like that...

The "-jrockit" start-up option only makes explicit that you want to run the
"jrockit" VM, but since that is the only VM alternative for the JRockit
    JRE/JDK
it is actually redundant and have no effect.
You can see information about it's use by running 'java -help' which prints
    $ java -help
    ---<---
    where options include:
-jrockit to select the "jrockit" VM
    The default VM is jrockit.

    (ex. java -jrockit -xmx128m -xms128m ... )
I couldn't find the note about it in any guides or something like that...

  • How to run a JRockit process in the background(Linux ia64)

    Hello,
I am trying to start a JRockit process 1.4.2 (with a Java app) from an SSH console and make it keep running after I log out. This is on Redhat Enterprise Linux WS 4 with Itanium II processor (ia64).
    The obvious thing such as
    java <options> <class> &
    or even
    nohup java <options> <class> &
Do not work and the process terminates when I log out.
Is there a recommended method or a facility to run JRockit in the background as a service/daemon? Does JRockit has switch similar to –Xrs of Sun’s JVM?
Starting the process on system boot and having to reboot the system to restart it are not acceptable.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Zapta

Zapta did get an answer. You may have missed it if you're using nntp to access the forums, since many newsreaders don't track threads that change the subject. I recommende the using the web UI at dev2dev.bea.com.
Anyway - Use "-Xnohup" with older versions of JRockit. In recent JRockit versions, "-Xrs" works as well, since we seen problems with people hardcoding that flag into various applications launchers (Tomcat for one).
    Cheers!

  • JBoss EAP 6 On JRockit - Memory Leak

    hello team.
I have memory leak problem on jboss and jrockit.
    My Environment :
    1. OS :
    CentOS release 6.4 (Final)
    2. JRockit :
    java version "1.6.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_45-b06)
Oracle JRockit(R) (build R28.2.7-7-155314-1.6.0_45-20130329-0641-linux-x86_64, compiled mode)
    3. Application Server:
    JBoss EAP 6.2.0.GA
    4. Application
Large EJB Application (100 and more EJB Beans (Stateless, Stateful,  MDB, Timers and so on)
Everything works fine on older application server versions (4.3 , 4.2)
    But now I have Problem
Of course I know that problem is new version - and i have discussion on JBoss forums.
but guys I have question about jrockit with you:
What is the option "Other" in memory ??
    [jboss@jboss-new bin]$ jrcmd 17114  print_memusage

Not sure what the 'other' is, but it is probably best shown by using an example. By using displayMap we can display a memory map of various JVM subsystems and libraries that are loaded, including third-party libraries.

    Here
    - thread is thread related (such as thread stacks)
    - int, internal use (such as pointer pages)
    - heap, chunk used by JRockit for the Java heap
    - os, mapped directly from the operating system, such as third party DLLs or shared objects
    - msp, memory space. a memory space is a native heap with a specific purpose, for example native memory allocation inside the JVM
    - gc, garbage collection related, for example live bits
    - code, compiled code
The 'other' memory space looks to me (from the blank entries in the above print-out) like they are a memory pages to are still not used. When the JVM starts it mappes an amount of memory. To my knowledge JRockit uses mmap (mmap(2) - Linux manual page), which creates a new mapping in the virtual address space. JRockit reserves an amount of memory (Java Heap (heap where your object instances go) + its own runtime (all the others)).
To see where the growth is in the various memory spaces, you can use 'print_memusage baseline', after which you can execute print_memusage again, for example,
    ./jrcmd 4523 print_memusage scale=M
    4523:
    Total mapped                     3896MB      +4MB (reserved=2905MB -3MB)
    -              Java heap          512MB           (reserved=0MB)
    -              GC tables           17MB
    -          Thread stacks           19MB           (#threads=39)
    -          Compiled code         1024MB           (used=14MB +1MB)
    -               Internal            1MB
    -                     OS          143MB
    -                  Other         2043MB
    -            Classblocks            7MB           (malloced=7MB #20596 +532)
    -        Java class data          126MB      +4MB (malloced=125MB +4MB #93640 +2592 in 20596 classes)
    - Native memory tracking            1MB           (malloced=0MB #20 +10)
Note the additional column that prints out the difference in memory usage in relation to the baseline. You can also monitor native allocations by using trace_alloc_sites, memory allocations can then be displayed with different levels of detail using the level argument.
    ./jrcmd 4523 print_memusage trace_alloc_sites=true

Note this is more on the JVM level, in your case in might be beneficial to investigate what is happening on the java heap. By using print_object_summary you can get insight how memory on the heap is used on a per-class basis. To get to the bottom of where the memory leak is you can use the memory-leak-detector (an example of its use can be found here Middleware Snippets: Fast, Faster, JRockit). You can also obtain a heapdump that can be analyzed by using for example MAT (see for an example here Middleware Snippets: Visualizing Class Loading). To obtain a heapdump you can run the command, for example,
    [weblogic@machine1 bin]$ ./jrcmd 4523 runsystemgc full=true fullcompact=true
    4523:
    [weblogic@machine1 bin]$ ./jrcmd 4523 hprofdump filename=/home/weblogic/dump.hprof
    4523:
    Wrote dump to /home/weblogic/dump.hprof
Note that this first issues a full GC by using the runsystemgc command.

Occurs very often - but after a few retries, the server starts correctly.
We added the following option :
    -XX:-FlightRecorder
and the error seems to have gone. We hope that disabling the JFR helped here (at least the error has nor re-occurred yet), but at some point we will need the JFR - maybe not on our local Win 7/64 environments.
Just pointing this issue out here on the forums - we know that WLS is not certified on Win 7 / 64.

    Hi Klara -
Thanks for your reply. We are using the following version :
    java version "1.6.0_17"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04)
Oracle JRockit(R) (build R28.0.0-679-130297-1.6.0_17-20100312-2123-windows-ia32, compiled mode)
And I am a local admin on this workstation. But I am not sure of I ran my weblogic start script "as admin" - with elevated privileges. Maybe I can try this out.
I don't think I am running a debug build of JRockit (how can I check?) but the version that comes bundles with Fusion Middleware for WLS 10.3.3
    Thanks!
