JS CS2 Transparency

Hi all,
How can I identify if a page has objects with transparcy effects applied to them?
The objects could also be either photoshop of illustrator links with transparencies added in their native applications.
In Indesigns desktop version, in the user interface, in the pages pallete, the icon for the page that has transparencies on it are displayed with a checquered pattern on it. Could I somehow use this to identify if the page has transparent objects.
Also in the user interface if you go to Window>>>Output>>>Flattener Preview, and in dropdown list if I select all affected objedcts, every object including links with transparencies a highlighted in a different colour.
Is there someway I could use either of these features to identify if a page has a transparency or not?
Would appreciate any help!!
Cheers
Norbert

Hi Robin,
What I am hoping to achieve is a small part of a huge process and it is not possible to switch between Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign just to find out if a document has any transparent object in it.
By the way, In Indesigns User interface I also noticed A Flattener Preview palette. Window>>>Output>>>Flattener Preview, there is a drop-down list which when All affected objects is selected, it highlights all objects with transparencies including links with transparecies applied in their native application.
I looked through the reference guide and could not find anything that would help.
Is it possible to somehow use this via a script?
Thanks for all the help!

  • CS2 Transparency

I'm fairly green when it comes to graphic design, and even moreso regarding transparency. So, please forgive me if what I'm about to ask has been discussed ad nauseum, or is a particularly stupid question...
A piece I'm working on at the moment (using InDesign CS2) uses 2 Pantone colours. I want to be able to print objects in one of the colours (say yellow) on top of a background of the other colour (say blue). Further, I want my yellow objects to have varying degrees of transparency, so that some of them almost blend in with the blue background.
My question is this. If I specify that one of the yellow objects has an opacity of only 10%, does this mean that the yellow ink will be printed less heavily (ie. less dots of ink) on top of the blue background, to give a slightly green tinge to the blue colour? Instead, will the transparent yellow area knock a hole out of the blue, leaving me a very pale yellow area where the transparent yellow object sits?
Another question. My understanding of tints of a Pantone colour is that, on white paper, the tint is created by simply printing the full strength ink less heavily - leading to more white paper showing through to create the lighter colour. However, isn't this just the same as transparency? On the other hand, how are various tints of a Pantone colour handled if printing on top of the blue background? Does each tint need to be mixed separately and treated as a separate colour?
Just finally, I've heard that exported PDFs should be created using the PDF/X-1a standard to avoid transparency problems. Can someone confirm that this is correct, and perhaps explain why this is needed?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Cheers,
    Steven

I would approach it the same way as Scott to be honest. By using the overprint option you can specify which areas you'd like to blend and which you'd like to be backed out, This should allow you to give the appearance of a 3 colour job, whilst only printing two.

  • InDesign CS2-generated PDF & feather effect/transparency issues

I am at my wit's end. I received a client's PDF file created to my specs (same ones we've used for 5 years). I am having massive flattened transparency issues. I am currently using Trueflow version 3, a rip which does not support live transparency; therefore, my distiller settings require that transparency be flattened. There are some horrible results that I can't rectify on my end. There is stitching showing (and outputting to the plate!) where she has placed .psd files on some pages. There is also a problem with feathered objects (which are linked photos) - they look just fine in the document but when exported and flattened, there is a white box behind the pictures instead of the soft feathered look.
When I exported her CS2 file using Acrobat 5 instead of 4, the effect is fine, but - my rip kicks it out. When I export to my specs, the PDF has the above print issues --
I want to clarify that I always view print ready PDF files using output and overprint preview -- this is not a preview issue -- it is a definite file & export & resulting print issue.
I would love to be able to assist my client -- this is a rush job. If anyone has encountered this and has a feeling what may be causing it, please let me know -
Also - I do not have any software to correct this issue -
    Thanks in advance -

Peter -- I am looking over those articles now. Here is the problem -- we do not print from the application
File > Print, and under Output, choose Composite CMYK, and CHECK the “Simulate Overprint” checkbox. Under Advanced, select your all-raster flattener.
I do not have her entire document -- only a couple of the problem children.
I suppose a workaround would be to (if I had her files) see if I could print as a postscript and distill it to a PDF -- or print to a postscript and send that into Trueflow to see if it will accept it --
However, I did receive a warning that by creating that high res setting with the slider all the way to the left, it would rasterize the whole page --
Now, I can already do that in just one step by opening the PDF in photoshop at a very high resolution and flattening it --
I simply hate having to go that route when we have type on the page too -- I think my issue is a lack of proper equipment -- we don't like to rasterize if we can help it -
Since this job is a rush, I may have no choice but to do that on those pages -
That info is helpful but in reality is a longer way of accomplishing the same thing --

  • Problems with image after flattening transparency in illustrator cs2

Hi,Could someone please help me.Im using illustrator cs2 with windows xp.
The problem i have is that after flattening any image using transparency
masks or opacity i can see thin broken white lines in the image.
They appear where the opacity masks are,or where they cross in the image.
I haven't been using illustrator for long and am not sure if it's something
    i'm doing incorrectly or not.
Also if i select all the paths after flattening i can see double the paths
that were there before which run along the unsightly white lines in the image.
Please could someone shed some light on this,it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks, Cal

Hi,I spent weeks trying to sort it out. Apparently it's unavoidable. I read somewhere that the white lines wouldn't appear when printed but i saved one of the images as a jpg an the lines were clearly visible.
Its because when the transparency in the image goes through the flattening process to enable printing it breaks the image into atomic regions and the white lines are the gaps in between.
People seem to think it's completely normal and acceptable but i don't . I think it's a load of old rubbish.
The way round it is to use stuff that doesn't use transparency like the gradient mesh and all that.
I can't be bothered with all that so i just save the unflattened image as a large png or jpg file for printing.
I'm no expert but if the facility to use transparency is there surely it should save perfectly after flattening. The whole things a real pain.
    Take care , Cal

  • Colour to transparent gradient in Illustrator CS2

I am creating a logo in Illustrator CS2 and i want to put a reflection
underneath, that has a gradient fading to transparent. It can be done but the logo needs to be used in other programs such as InDesign. When placed into InDesign the transparency of the gradient is no longer there, it changes to white.
Is there any way to do this?
    thanks Tim

    Try using a transparency mask: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/13.0/help.html?content=WS2D8B6C1E-A2C8-4902-8 9C8-E5D04A6B314B.html

  • Revolve and transparency in CS2

Hi, I'm using Illustrator CS2 to create a 3D image that has a degree of transparency. Basically a clear tube that is half filled with blood.
I've created a profile that contains a red line with a curved bottom for the (blood-filled) half of the tube, and a grey line for the upper (empty) half of the tube. The grey line has been set to about 20% opacity, so that the top surface of the blood and the top rim can be seen through the wall of the tube.
As I've being going along creating the profile, I keep checking my progress by turning on the 3D effect and selecting preview. However, when I do this, it's hit or miss as to whether the upper part of the tube previews as transparent. About half the time that I select it, the upper part of the tube becomes an opaque light grey, instead of being transparent.
Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong, or is it just a bug in the software? I'm using XP on a 2.4GHz Core2 with 3GB RAM.
    Thanks,
    Steven

  • Make placed JPEG color transparent in Illustrator CS2/3

I've been using CorelDRAW! for years and want to learn to use Illustrator CS2 and CS3.
In CorelDRAW I can import (place) a simple bitmap images, such as a JPEG, and I can select and make transparent any color in the image. An example would be to bring in an image that has a white area, select the white color with the eyedropper tool and then use a slider to change the opacity of the white. It's much simpler to do than to describe it!
I've searched the Adobe web site, asked some "experts" I know and also spent a few hours searching the web. It seems that there is no such capability built into Illustrator.
The only way I've been able to accomplish this task is to open the image with Photoshop, select the white area and make it a separate layer, then save it as a native Photoshop file, then import it into Illustrator.
The only thing annoying about this procedure is now I need an additional copy of a bitmap file.
    Thanks,
    WK

    Kurt Gold,
Thanks for the definitive answer, it still seems strange to me that this function is not in Illustrator. Oh well, life goes on.
Yes, CorelDraw's function is indeed called "Bitmap Color Mask."
    /no flame for Bert Philippus/
Where O' Where is this information in the FM? ;-)
    /no flame, no blame/

  • IND CS2 to PDF transparency mode?

    Hi Folks,
I thought I set up an RGB doc in IND but I keep getting this message when

  • CS2 - Gradient Transparency

    Hi...
Does CS2 support transparency in a gradient - meaning a fade from opaque to transparent?

    Hi
You can do this in Transparency Palette,
I'm no good at explaining but I'll try...
select the shape to what you want to apply the Gradient effect on, and in the Transparency Palette you should see a white box with a preview of your shape and next to that is a blank space, do a double click on that blank space and it will show black. Now draw a box over your current shape and give it a black & white Gradient and where it is black should show through your clear transparency and white is solid.

1- I'm trying to place a transparent image from photoshop to my illustrator artwork and get the white box around the image.
What is the best way to prevent the white box from appearing in illustrator?
What should I do.. either in photoshop or illustrator.. to prevent this from happening? (please explain details & proper procedures).
I will be using this file for print in cmyk.
When I place a photoshop transparent image with NO white box into illus. and try to flatten it, it does not flatten.
When I place a flatten image from photoshop with the white box and try to use the magic wand to remove the white area nothing happens,
    I can't use the wand?
Can someone please tell HOW to accomplish the above?
2- Also when trying to synchronize my color settings between Photoshop & illus. it says to use the color settings in Bridge under edit.

  • Indesign CS2 Q: Remove or make transparent - lines from stacked shapes logo?

    Hi
I'm making a logo that is basically a repitition of simple shape stacked on top of each other. With line thickness [in 'paper' colour] I can control the appearance of space between my objects, provided my background is the same colour as the lines. If I wish to place this over an image, I can not remove the lines without destroying the whole effect. The logo's 'altered' shapes aren't altered, only hidden by others to appear 'altered.'
Is there a way to make these lines clear?
I see I can bring the stack through illustrator into pshop, and remove a selected colour, then save png and I have no lines between my shapes. The issue seems to be a loss of quality on the spae's edges with this solution.
There must be a better way than what I know of....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    cheers.
image: to create a version of the icon, for placement over an image. It's now a group of 5 copies of the central shape and 'thick' white lines.

seeinghuman: Use the Direct Selection tool in Illustrator.  Select just the orange parts and move them away from the white strokes.  Then delete the white strokes.  Alternatively, you could just select the white strokes and delete them.
You could select the orange parts, copy and paste them back into InDesign, but I'd recommend doing logos in Illustrator and keeping them as an .ai file that you place as needed into your InDesign document.  I would avoid Photoshop for logos as Illustrator is much better suited for this task.

  • How can I make a transparent animated gif?

I'm using CS2. I have an animated gif that I want to take the black background out of so that the animated part of it is all that remains.
Here is a link to the image:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v97/tragicmike/random/Tesseract.gif
I basically want to remove all of the black background from the image so that the animated tesseract is all that remains. I know how to open the gif to expose the layers using ImaegeReady, then edit them in PhotoShop. But when I made the black areas of each layer transparent (by selecting the RGB channel, inverting the selection, and hitting delete), saved a copy, and tried viewing it, it seems to just display all of the transparent layers constantly instead of cycling through them.
Can someone please help me figure out how to make an animated gif with a transparent background? If I lose some of the black areas of the animated part (since they seem to get deleted when I remove all of the black background) it's no big deal. I just need to know how to do this so that it plays correctly.
    Thank you!!!
    Mike

<b>"I have to wonder why the black background was included on every frame of the moving shape."</b>

<br />Well, George...the only reason I can think of is because it's an animated GIF, and GIFs only support one layer.
    <br />
<br />Whatever application it was created in should have been able to render it out with a transparent BG. But I suppose the creator had his/her reasons for going with the black BG.

<s>that same</s> a similar animation back in December, and the version I grabbed only had the black showing through the inside of the tesseract. I opened it in ImageReady and

  • Photoshop CS2 keeps crashing on MacBook Pro running snow leopard

I have been using CS2 on my MacBook Pro for more than two years.  Just two days ago, the Photoshop application began to UNEXPECTEDLY QUIT every time I opened it.  All other apps in the CS2 are working fine.  I have NEVER had a problem with the CS2 or this application.  I did download a trial of QuarkXpress 9 and a trial of Office for Mac 2011, but that should not have any effect on the CS2.  I went to the Apple store and we reloaded my system software (Snow Leopard) and updated back to my original 10.6.8 system but Photoshop keeps quitting.  I called Adobe tech support just now and we spent over 90 minutes, re-installed Version Que and still Photoshop keep quitting.  We changed the Administrator and that had no effect, Photoshop keeps quitting.  There is no common action that causes it.  I can be cloning and it will freeze, I can flatten, cut and paste and save, then it quits.  Any suggestions?  I cannot afford to upgrade to CS5 and I am more concerned WHY this would happen out of the clear blue...I have not added any typefaces.  Any suggestions?

Maybe you applied an update to your OS recently?
Illustrator is from a different planet, as are other point applications artificially lumped together into a "suite" by marketing fiat.  How other applications behave is irrelevant.
You really, really need to upgrade.
I didn't want to upgrade beyond Photoshop CS4, so I stopped upgrading all my  hardware and all my software. Therefore, I experience no problems whatsoever.
