[JS] Moving Pages

In the UI if you move a range of pages between documents it will keep
all the text frames linked. However, with scripting even if you use
itemByRange it still moves one page at a time thereby unlinking text
frames that are linked across pages. Does anyone know how to move pages
through scripting while keeping their link?

Hi Fred,
There's no real solution that I can think of, apart from marking each text frame (with a label) and then reconnecting them in the destination document.
You can tag each linked text frame in the page range with its original id and the id of its next text frame--creating a label something like this: "245:246". The ids are unique, so it'll make them easy to find in the destination document.

Alternate layout created when moving pages from one document to another

I'm using CC on Windows 7 - I have 2 documents that I want to merge and make into 1 [I know people will want to know why I would want to do this - each document is the result of a different data merge - data merge can only handle one master page - so I have 2 datamerges - 2 files - and just need to merge the 2 files]
This used to work beautifully in ID 5.5 - now when I use the pages panel to move the pages to the other document - it creates an alternate layout - it is then very difficult for me to interlace alternating pages - - I use dot be able to just move the pages into place - but with eh 2 layouts it is behaving differently and in a way I do not understand. Is there any way I can get around this? or avoid the alternate layout and just have one. The 2 page sizes are identical so it is not a problem of varying size - the paragraph styles are all the same as well. I have tried to delete the alternating style but it will delete all the pages as well.

Maybe its time for me to Replace my Preferences, because I also have 8.0.2, and I tried the same thing with two new documents based on the same preset - it still made an alternate layout. When the moved page is placed in the middle of several pages (say - after page 2, of 6 pages) all the pages after the inserted one become part of the new alternate layout. In this example, I had a six-page document, and moved one page of the other identical document to After Page 3 Here's the result

Moving pages and page numbers running on

When moving pages from one document to another (using the move pages feature) the page numbers aren't running in order. The document that I add to the end of the previous document starts at page 1.
They used to run in order in CS5, so first document would end at 28 and new document would start at 29, is this a setting I need to change?

Sounds like your previous documetn was part of a Book, and the Book was controlling the numbering, OR you set the numbering and section options on the first page of each file to start onthe number of your choice.
When you move pages to a new file, that file will start with page 1 by default, and it's up to you to change it if you need to.

Is there another methode of moving pages in a pdf-file then drag / drop?
It takes ages to scroll past ± 200 pages.

My solution at this moment is:
- maximize the thumbnail window
- reduze the thumbnail size until the pages are still recognisable
- make sure the moving pages and location are "in sight"
- select the pages to move
- drag the pages to their new location.
It would be nice when one could use CTRL-X and CTRL-V.
But this will do also.

Why did moving pages to a different site cause scary glitches?

I'm an advanced iWeb (3.0.4) user with two iWeb sites: the OLD one, and the NEW one. I built all-new pages for the new site, but I dragged in two MOVED pages from the old site. Once I did this, the site will not publish. "Publish Error: an unknown error occured."
There's a few other symptoms:
-I cannot move the moved pages back to the old site. When I try, the blue "drag/drop" selection box freezes, and the pages do not drop where I drag them.
-I cannot delete the moved pages. When I click delete, nothing happens.
-When I click on the moved pages to view or edit them, they do not load. The iWeb window stays blank.
-The site will not publish to MobileMe or a local folder.
-The old site still publishes.
These solutions have not worked:
-Deleting the .plist and rebooting / clearing the cache.
-Moving the Domain file, creating a new blank site, deleting the new blank site, replacing the Domain file.
-Transferring the Domain file to another Mac and publishing from the new Mac.
I wish I could sit down with an iWeb expert and sort this out. Any tips from you guys?

Do you have a backup copy of the Domain.sites2 file you can revert to?
Can you delete items from the two moved pages (make a backup copy of the domain file first)? If you can try deleting an item and try publishing to a folder. Keep that up till you can publish. Then open the backup copy and delete that last item and see if you can publish. If it's just one item that's causing the problem this might be one way to isolate it.

Moving Pages using Tags

I have always found moving pages around in Acrobat documents to be a pain. I thought I might be able to use tags or some other form of document structure to move pages around.
In the help section related to tagging, the help states:
Add tagged bookmarks
Tagged bookmarks give you greater control over page
content than do regular bookmarks. Because tagged
bookmarks use the underlying structural information of the
document elements (for example, heading levels,
paragraphs, table titles), you can use them to edit the
document, **such as rearranging their corresponding pages in
the PDF**, or deleting pages. If you move or delete a parent
tagged bookmark, its children tagged bookmarks are
moved or deleted along with it.
However, under the page movement help section, it states
Move or copy a page
You can use page thumbnails to copy or move pages within
a document and between documents.
When you drag a page thumbnail in a Pages panel, a bar
appears near other thumbnails, indicating the position in
which it will appear in the PDF. This bar appears at the
bottom or top when the thumbnails are in a single column,
or to the left or right if more than one column of
thumbnails is displayed.
Note: Tagged bookmarks affect the order that reading
devices follow, such as devices for the visually impaired.
Tagged bookmarks do not change the sequence of pages in
a PDF.
Is there really a way that you can move actual pages around in a document in a structure way, rather than just crudely selected a range of pages in the pages view?

Moved page no longer displays Master Page elements.

After moving a page in my document the master page elements no longer display on screen or in print. If I move the page to a different location in the document the master displays but if it is in the specific position that it needs to be it will not display. The document has multiple Masters and others do work on the page but the one that I need will not. I've tried deleting the page and adding a new one and that does not fix the problem. I've checked and "Hide Master Items" is not checked. The page in question is in position 48 with F-Master applied. If I move it to position 49 it works, 50, it works, 51, or any other it works. If I apply a different master to the page, it works. If I delete the page, add a new page and apply F-Master it still does not work. The only page that this problem is happening on is page 48.

Moving Pages from one Page Group to Another Group

Hello,
How do you move pages, styles, or items from one page group to another page group?
On the same machine, I have three page groups called Production, Acceptance, and Test. Once I set up a page that I like on the page group Test, what is the best way to move the page(and its items, portlets,etc) to the page group Acceptance, and then move it into Production?
Also, how does security and approvals affect this? There is only limited amount of people that are able to get into the Test Page Group, or Acceptance Page Group. Would any copying process make sure the page approvers be copied across correctly? Or will manual intervention be needed.
I'm using Oracle Portal Release 2 (9.0.2) running on a solaris machine.

As far as i know, the pages can only be moved within the page group but not from one page group to another page group.

[JS CS3] Moving pages from one doc to another

I'm having trouble understanding the pages.move method, when used to move pages from one file to another. With one ID file open, I want to create another file, and then move pages from the first file to the second. At this point, the new, second file is untitled. Must I save it first? Here is what I have so far...

Dave, that was it! I didn't realize that the Move method actually "moved" the pages. I assumed it copied the pages, similar to the move pages dialog without the "delete pages after moving" option checked. But I see now that what I really want to use is the "duplicate" method, which will allow me to copy the page from a one-page document into another document. Thanks!

Moving pages from one document to another in preview

I have two PDF documents open with the sidebar on my desktop. I have moved a page from one document sidebar to another and then saved the document with the additional page. When I open the document the added page is not there. This is extremely fustrating as I have tried this all different ways. Any suggestios???

The movie is still available, watching it may help, it shows a method for adding all the pages from one PDF to another. The general idea of where to drag in the destination would still apply for adding just one page.

[CS4/JS] Problem moving pages -- they're losing their connections to sections

I've encountered something I think might be a bug in InDesign. It's actually not strictly a scripting problem -- I discovered it while debugging a script, but it happens in the user interface as well. The easiest way for me to explain it is with a script, though.
The problem is this: When you have two pages that have the same page number but different page number styles, and one of them is the first page of the document, and they're both the beginning of their own sections (and continueNumbering is off for both), they should stay the way they are when you move them, but they don't. The page that was first and is now second loses its connection to its section, and becomes an automatic page number following the first page.
The following script will set up just such a document and illustrate the problem:

I realize this is sort of an obscure scenario, but I'm trying to write a script that takes pages from different documents and fixes the page numbers (i.e., makes them all the beginnings of their own sections and turns off continueNumbering) and puts them together in one new document in order of page number. I want it to cover all possible situations, so it might as well cover the one I'm describing above.

In my anchoredObjectSettings I only set the Option Keep Within Top/Bottom Column Boundaries (as true).
That's why the object is moved until a certain point and then the movement has no effect.
In fact the object is moved and the overlapping is compensated many times.
if I have look into the indesign document while running the script, the object in fact moves.
for this i don't see a reason why the geometricbounds do not change because of this?

How to preserve section when moving pages?

I need to sort pages in a document. All the pages start a section. When I move a page at the beginning the former page 1 does not start a section anymore. This is exactly like in the GUI. (And I consider this a bug.) In the GUI though the new page 2 still is marked as a section start and also the pageNumberStart is still correct. I only need to click on the radio button "Start page numbering at" (do not know the exact English wording) and everything is fine. The corresponding script command
mypage.appliedSection.continueNumbering=false;
however fails, as this will change the first page. I thought of just creating a new section and apply this to page 2 but this also does not work.
Then I thought I create a dummy page at the beginning do the sorting and remove dummy page. That looked promissing but also lead to nowhere.
This is the last try...

In case someone is interested... This is how I worked around. Every page got its current page name as a label. Then I moved lowest page at beginning, removed every section, except for default, reconfigured appliedSection of page 1. Then did the sorting by label, created sections again...

Problem moving pages within a pdf

I have been working with a fairly large document (around 1500 pages) and it is impossible to re-order the pages. An example: I will drag page 12 to page 2, and when I release the mouse button, the page will be at page 18. Inserting from a file leads to the same results. I will insert pages from the insert file dialog, set it to "First" (meaning I want the pages at the beginning of the document), and the pages will be inserted at page 10 or so. I am using Acrobat X Pro. I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

I presume you are using the Pages Pane in the Navigation Panel for your page dragging.
With such a large PDF, you may also want to Embed the Thumbnails at least while you are moving the pages around. This will help to speed up the 'refresh' of the pages in the Pane.
Expand the Pages Pane, click on the Gears icon and select Embed All Page Thumbnails.
Since this does increase the file size to the PDF, once you are finished, go back to the Gears and select Remove Embedded Page Thumbnails and then save.
In addition to the possible corruption, the location in where the pages are ending up makes me wonder about this possibility, too.

Missing and Moved Page Numbers?

I'm having a problem losing folios; I have a 300 page book where all of the page numbers are centered horizontally.My editor ran a final spell-check and 'saved as,' yet in this new document, on pages where I have over-rode the Master page, the pages numbers are deleted altogether or moved 2 inches towards the spine. Any insight as to why this happened?
On the pages where the page number was shifted towards the spine, the text boxes were "frame fitted" so they no longer stretched across the page. My editor insists she touched nothing but the spell-check dialog box.

Yep, the document has always been in CS5, patched to 7.0.4.
I have a master page for the first page of each chapter, and I over-ride to change the chapter number and title. The page numbers weren't overlapping anything else, and on closer inspection it only happened on the recto pages. I just want to figure out why this happened so we don't have to add this to our final checklist (which is long enough already!) before sending large books to the printers.

I need to write a script for my company which merges 3 documents together by selecting the needed pages in two of three documents and moving them to the third document. Everything works fine and I am almost finished but I can't find a way to move pages between documents.
I also thought about just copying everything on the needed pages but this doesn't work because every document has different master pages which are needed.
Is somebody able to help me with the needed code to select some Pages and move them to the end of another document?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With no pages moved and no pageItems covered - where is the point which you called "almost finish"?
Example:
(with 2 documents opened - last opened index = 0)
var tarPage = app.documents[0].pages[0];
app.documents[1].pages[0].duplicate(LocationOptions.AFTER, tarPage);
It duplicates 1st page of 1st doc after 1st page od 2nd doc. Move() method work similar.
In case of masterPages you can move them as well but this is an open gate to another story, I am afraid.
