I understand your frustration but please do not use all caps when posting--it "sounds" as if you're yelling to the eye. In any case, are you sure you're using the select tool and not the hand tool?

Speaking selected blocks of text in preview

Hello everyone.
Hi, I am a fan of Speech functionality and use 'Start Speaking' in Preview for reading blocks of text back to myself. Whatever text was selected is what would be read. Now suddenly, every time I try to do this, it starts reading from the start of the document, regardless of what is selected. I discovered that selecting View > PDF Display > Single Page instead of Single Page Continuous makes it at least start reading from the beginning of the page I am on, but this is still annoying in most cases. The behaviour works as before in web browsers, but not Preview.
Any idea why this is? Did I change something? Why would the behaviour suddenly change?

Newbie Mac user: Selecting block of text via the keyboard only?

Hi,
I'm switching over to a Mac from a PC and haven't been able to find an answer to this question. How do I select a block of text only by using the keyboard?
As an example, on the PC from wherever the cursor is in a document, if I then hit Ctrl-Shift-end, the entire rest of the document from the cursor down is selected. Another similar task would be to select all of the text from the cursor to the end of the line, which on the PC can be done with Shift-end.
Are there Mac equivalents?

COMMAND-SHIFT-end to select from the cursor to the end of the line. COMMAND-SHIFT-pagedown selects from cursor to end of document, use pageup to select entire document.
Other alternatives:
Press SHIFT and use the right arrow key to select characters. Use OPTION-SHIFT and right arrow to select words. COMMAND-right arrow key moves cursor to end of line and OPTION-right arrow moves cursor to next word.

Not talking about CTRL+Y, that is good to select on reports or tables etc. I once knew the shortcut to select block text and paste block text in SE38. Does anyone remember that shortcut key? Thanks.

Update 4.1.2 deleting large blocks of text following backspace correction

OK, this is a difficult for me to explain, but here goes nothing. I have been having an issue since the update. When typing a message, when I backspace to correct a wrong word/spelling, and then select the correct word from the predictive text bar, most of my message gets erased and replaced with the one word I selected. Even weirder, the word gets inserted in between the few characters of remaining text. The first couple times it happened, I thought I had accidentally selected the block of text with my cursor, but that was not the case. The text is not selected, but acts as though it is and gets overwritten/deleted. This is happening in Messaging and Gmail (and I am assuming all other typing applications).
Is anyone else having this issue? It is making me wan to throw my phone out the window! Please let me know if you know a fix for this.

Mine is doing the same thing! I got the update last night and it is deleting practically my entire message when I backspace. Also, the puncuation options do not pop up anymore like they used to at the top of the keyboard unless you hit space and then backspace.
I'm right there with you...I want to throw this thing out the window. I've seen some cool things this update did, but things I hardly ever would use. The fact it messed with my texting (something I do a lot) has really ****** me off.

OK, Duh...press and hold on the text and a small menu will pop up. Then use Select, Select All, or just drag the blue handles to select the text you want.

Can I cut, copy and paste a block of text in PL/SQL Developer?

I have been using TextPad to put together SQL statements by using the cut, copy and pasting of BLOCKS of text.
Example:
I copy the describe of a table, replace varchar, number, date will 10 spaces and then copy the column names in a block and paste it further down the TextPad.
Then I join the lines into one string, replace the spaces with commas
Then I insert in front of the column name the INSERT INTO table_name(
Then I get the values by copying from somewhere else and paste then in block text where they need to go. ETC, ETC.

In 2.0 you should be able to just type
INSERT INTO emp(
and do multiple selections from code completion list of suggested emp columns (by holding ctrl or shift key). Same for "select" and "from" clauses (with optional auto aliasing).

Push button "Select Block" on the list screen?Interactive report

Hi, i am developing a plain report(Use read data & write output, not ALV).
And there was a checkbox(itab-chx) before each line of the output list.
The customer wants me to add 4 buttons on the menu bar, they are 'Delete', 'Select ALL', 'Deselect all', <b>'Select block'</b>.
As far as i know that 'Delete' button is for the user to delete the entries which they have checked using the checkbox.
As for 'Select ALL' is that when they push this button, all the checkbox on the output list are checked.
As for 'Deselect all' is that ...all are unchecked.
<b>BUT</b> i dont have any idea on 'Select Block' function?? What it is and how to program and handling with this button???

Moving selected parts of text

This is probably a dumb question, but how do I move select parts of text? I have a "B" and a "G" that I put into Illustrator using the text tool. When I go to move the "G" onto the lower corner of the "B", it selects both letters and moves them as a block.

To elaborate (further) on what Emil said, you may use Character>Baseline Shift with a nrgative value on the G selected separately and then apply a negative Character>Tracking, or go back and forth between the two operations.
Here is such a BG as live (editable) Type with a colour change of the G (the fairest font in 72pt, baseline shift -30pt, tracking -100).
As mentioned earlier, there is a lot of things that cannot be done with live Type.

Add style to large block of text without affecting existing styles within that text

Hello! First post here.
I have a long document of text that mostly does not have text styles attached (this was a mistake). However, there is a large number of areas of styled text within.
Is there a way to select all the text and apply a style to only the unstyled text without affecting the existing styles?
Doing this by hand text block by text block would take a long long time.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Getting the character count for a paragraph is trivial:

Selecting type with text tool - grabbing lines

This is has happened in the past but much more so with my current version of illustrator (I have CS2). When I use the text tool to revise text, it seems to want to select whatever lines are closest to the text rather than the text. This is very frustrating - I want my text tool to select whatever TEXT it is closest too, not lines. Is this a fault of the program or is there a setting somewhere I can change to make this happen less, or preferably, not at all?

Pressing Alt is
supposed to force-toggle the infuriating text tool between the TypeTool and the TypeOnAPathTool.
So if the path that you don't want to turn into a PathType object is an open unfilled path (like a manually-drawn underline, and it is in front of the text object you want to edit, this seems to work, when the TypeTool is selected:
1. Press Ctrl to momentarily invoke the most recently-used pointer. Select the underlying text object.
2. Release Ctrl. The TypeTool cursor returns. Note that when the cursor is in proximity to the path, it changes to the TypeOnAPathTool cursor (the one with the wavy line).
3. Press Alt. Note that the cursor changes to the TypeTool, and has a circle around it. Click and you should enter the text, not create a PathType object.
However, as far as I can figure out (actually, as far as I can bear to muck with this awful interface), this does not work correctly if the unwanted path is filled. Try this:
1. Create a text object with some text in it.
2. Draw a filled rectangle that overlays just part of the text.
3. TypeTool: Press Alt to momentarily invoke a pointer. Click the text object to select it.
4. Release Alt. TypeTool comes back.
5. Hover within proximity to the filled rectangle. The cursor becomes the normal TypeTool cursor enclosed in a circle.
This suggests that a click will enter the text, not create a PathType. Alas, it creates a PathType anyway. Try it again, this time pressing Alt. Pressing Alt makes the cursor change to the TypeOnAPath cursor, with no circle around it. Clicking creates a PathType.
Worst text-handling interface I have ever seen.
