Sounds like a classloader problem. Do you have multiple jsf-api.jar files in your environment? Check the shared lib directories.
If you have the flexibility to use a different app server for development, GlassFish is the best JSF application server (IMO): https://glassfish.dev.java.net

    I am unable to start the login application on the Tomcat Web Application Manager.
    The following Message appears on top:
    FAIL - Application at context path /login could not be started
    Let me say, that I have already continued developing more code for this application up to this point and wanted to test in the meantime. Since I had this failure I mentioned above, I have stripped down the application to the code above and I still have no success. I cannot go further until I am getting this very small application up and running on the server.
    Is anybody out there who could give me a hint to solve this problem?
    I really appreciate any hints, since I am circeling around the problem for guit a while.
    Thanks very much
    Markus

    The following Message appears on top:
    FAIL - Application at context path /login could not be started
    Let me say, that I have already continued developing more code for this application up to this point and wanted to test in the meantime. Since I had this failure I mentioned above, I have stripped down the application to the code above and I still have no success. I cannot go further until I am getting this very small application up and running on the server.
    Is anybody out there who could give me a hint to solve this problem?
    I really appreciate any hints, since I am circeling around the problem for guit a while.
    Thanks very much

  • JSF 2 with Tomcat 6

    Has anyone tried running JSF2 on Tomcat 6? I tried to do this but running into EL compatibility issues. Tried various combinations but nothing worked. I did the setup and test based on the following post.
    http://weblogs.java.net/blog/cayhorstmann/archive/2009/12/29/jsf-20-and-tomcat
    If anyone accomplished this, please post the following
    1) list of libraries in tomcat lib
    2) list of libraries in WEB-INF/lib
    3) web.xml configuration
    I have the following config and my sample page only displays plain HTML but not any JSF text box fields.
    I added the following to tomcat lib
    el-api-2.2.jar
    el-impl-2.2.jar
    jstl-api-1.2.jar
    jstl-impl-1.2.jar
    I have the following in WEB-INF/lib
    jsf-api.jar
    jsf-impl.jar
    jstl-api-1.2.jar
    jstl-impl-1.2.jar
    weld-servlet.jar
    My web.xml is:

    I also have an empty beans.xml in my WEB-INF folder. This is required for Weld.
    Anyone, plese help.

    Has anyone tried running JSF2 on Tomcat 6? Yep, I use the Mojarra JSF 2 implementation in Tomcat 6 all the time, and many of my students and clients have as well.
    I have used various different Mojarra 2.0.x releases without problems on Tomcat 6, Tomcat 7, Glassfish 3, and JBoss 6
    (minus the JAR files in the Java EE 6 containers). JSF 2 is supposed to run in any container that supports servlets 2.5 and later,
    and I have gotten reports of it running on the Google Cloud Server, which I think is running Jetty.
    Maybe you could be more specific about the constructs that caused problems and the error messages that you got?
    Here are some details:
    1) Here is my web.xml. The PROJECT_STAGE and welcome-file-list entries are optional. Your sample app had some
    extra things in the web.xml that were not related to JSF; I would suggest removing them first to test a barebones
    JSF 2 app before trying to combine technologies.

    </web-app>2) The JAR files I have in WEB-INF/lib are jsf-api.jar, jsf-impl.jar, jstl-api-1.2.jar, and jstl-impl-1.2.jar.
    The JSTL JAR files are actually not needed for the simple apps I link to below, but are needed for
    any JSF 2.0 app that uses ui:repeat, so IMHO should be considered a required part of a JSF 2.0 app.
    3) Here is my faces-config.xml file (the trivial apps below don't use any declarations in it,
    so it just has start and end tags):
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <faces-config xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee"
       xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
       xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee
          http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/javaee/web-facesconfig_2_0.xsd"
       version="2.0">
    </faces-config>4) Of course, it is not used by the server at all, but I also think it is a good practice to add the JSF 2.0
    project facet if you are using Eclipse 3.6. That way, you get some help from the IDE when editing faces-config.xml and any .xhtml file.
    5) Here are two very simple Eclipse projects that you can download and try. They follow the structure outlined above, and they work
    for me in Tomcat 6, Tomcat 7, and Glassfish 3 as is. They will run in JBoss 6 if you remove the JAR files from WEB-INF/lib (and, removing
    the JAR files is really the right thing to do in Glassfish also, although they do in fact run as is).

  • JSF error messages

    has anybody successful using JSF error messages. Im using JSF portlet framework to display error msgs using h:messages tag. Im able to display validation/conversion errors with h:message tag.
    Im unable to display general messages that are result of an application exception. Has anybody ever done that?
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    If I understand you correctly ...

  • Error starting Tomcat

    Hi all,
    I'm stupefied. In the past I had a Tomcat running in Apache, now I seem not to be able to accomplish it.
    My environment:
    OS: Windows XP
    Java: jdk1.6.0_03
    Apache: Apache2.2
    Tomcat: Tomcat6.0
    JAVA_HOME is set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03
    I used the Apache Tomcat Setup Wizard to install Tomcat. It is installed as an XP service. Starting fails, with the following entry in the log file:
    [2007-12-05 15:37:44] [info] Procrun (2.0.3.0) started

    I've been searching the Internet on the error message <tomcat jdk The specified module could not be found>, and have been fiddling around with my configuration, but still my Tomcat does not want to start. So does anyone have an idea what I need to do to get my Tomcat in the air?
    Abel

    Found the error, after searching some more on the Internet. It seems Tomcat misses a file, msvcr71.dll, which is located in the C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03\bin directory. If you copy this file to the <windows>/system32 directory, Tomcat starts without a problem.

  • JSF: Problem during Tomcat Startup

    Hi, I am having a strange problem with a JSF-application.
    I am using jdk 1.3.1 (13), Tomcat 5.0.28 and the Sun JSF-Ref. implementation. On my dev-environment all is well. On the system-test environment of the customer, Tomcat would not initialize the FacesServlet claiming that it can not find the faces-config-file.
    I have tries all 3 ways of referencing the config-file (put it into a jar, put faces-config.xml directly into WEB-INF, add a context-param to web.xml with the URI of the file and param-name javax.faces.CONFIG_FILES). All three work fine on my dev, none of them works on sys-test.
    Funny enough, if I use the context-param in web.xml, where the web-app context is ctx, for the URI /WEB-INF/the-faces-config.xml I get an error during startup, for the URI /ctx/WEB-INF/the-faces-config.xml I don't have a problem on startup but the servlet does not actually read the config-file (you can tell from the fact that it can't resolve any of the Bean-methods).
    Any idea would be much appreciated!
    Cheers, Bastian

    Hi, thanks - unfortunately that did not help. The system (in the original configuration) does find the jars ok in WEB-INF/lib (I can tell since there is code in the jar which is executed before the problems hit me and the stack-trace when it can't resolve the bean-methods is from com.sun.faces.el.impl). It looks like the beans are not actually initialized (which is consistent, since the system can't find the config-file which wires the beans).

  • JSF 1.2/Tomcat 6.x

    I'm having trouble getting JSF 1.2 (myFaces implementation) running with Tomcat 6. Pretty much any JSF tag I use gives me this error:
    javax.servlet.ServletException: /index.jsp(22,4) According to TLD or attribute directive in tag file, attribute value does not accept any expressions
         javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet.service(FacesServlet.java:152)I've done a search, and found some old threads that offer many different solutions that don't work (replace jars in tomcat lib dir, or other wierd configuration changes). It seems tomcat 6 shouldn't need any wierd hacks to play nice with JSF 1.2, as it meets the Servlet and JSP spec required. Any idea whats going on here?

    Hi ,
    I also face this same kind of problem.
    I tried to fix the problem but not work out.
    I got another solution. I am not sure its a current solution .
    Try it carefully.
    Finally 1, I take back up -copy of server.xml and common/lib .
    2, Un-install Tomcat server.
    3, After i have installed fresh tomcat server.
    4, Replace back-up copy of server.xml and common/lib.
    its working fine

  • Tomcat 5.5 issues, has anyone got JSF working with tomcat 5.5 yet?

    Hi,
    Firstly I'm wondering if anyone has got JSF 1.1 working with tomcat 5.5 yet.
    I'm trying to move from tomcat 5.0.25 to 5.5.4 and my JSF webapps have not liked the move at all.
    The classpath doesn't seem to be a problem as I have all the .jars that are required in the classpath of tomcat just like before.
    I see the error log in stdout.log (catalina.out on linux) have been reduced to only show the precise error. Or at least is seems at lot easier to read.
    My error is simply
    SEVERE: Error listenerStart
    SEVERE: Context startup failed due to previous errors
    I reverted back to using the examples provided like jsf-guessNumber and the car-demo but neither of these will start-up.
    This issue seems to have occurred to lots of other people previously but I couldn't find a particular fix or direct compatability issue with tomcat.
    Has anyone encountered this before?

    Back again,
    Allright well after a little thought I concluded that this issue had to be some to do with the classpath and the changes between the two tomcat versions.
    I had a look at
    http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.5-doc/RELEASE-NOTES.txt
    and noticed that tomcat 5.5 leaves out some important .jar as they are only needed for java 1.4.
    -------------------- EXTRACT ------------------------
    Installing the compatibility package will add the following to the list, which are
    needed when running on J2SE 1.4:
    * jmx.jar (Java Management Extensions API 1.2 or later)
    * xercesImpl.jar (Xerces XML Parser, version 2.6.2 or later)
    --------------------END EXTRACT ------------------------
    Therefore I tried putting xercexImpl.jar back onto the tomcat classpath and JSF works once again.
    Ah what a relief.

  • A new approach to JSF error handling?

    Hi.
    I would like to run an idea by the community to check that I am not being crazy in doing this stuff. I would appreciate any comments, criticism or ideas.
    I was thinking about JSF's error processing mechanism, specifically about how label text gets associated with an input field. So, I am talking about this kind of stuff:
    <h:outputLabel for="firstName" value='#{msgs["applicant.search.firstName"]}: ' />
    <h:inputText id="firstName" value='#{applicantDetailsBackingBean.firstName}' required=true/>If the value is not entered into the input field, we will get an error message saying:
    First Name: is required.
    So HtmlMessageRenderer has replaced the field id in the FacesMessage with the label text by using the association set up with the 'for' attribute on the label. All of this message "decoration" work happens in the RENDER phase in a centralized location. I see a couple of weaknesses in this approach
    1) It is too late for resolving label text data if the label is inside a data table
    2) JSF establishes associations between label text and the input fields by using the label components to point to their input fields. Although this seems more natural, it limits label text sources to just the label components present on the current page (or whatever is nested under them), which makes it impossible to associate input field messages with label text that does not exist on the page in its entirety.
    Let's look at a couple examples, both of which I ran into in my application:
    1) Consider a situation in which we have a dataTable where every row consists of a student name and an input field for entering their assignment mark. The validation on the input field will be restricted to valid letter grades only. If the user enters an invalid grade, we want them to see an error message of the form: +The mark entered for <student name> is invalid.+ Since <student name> is dependent on the row in which the error occurred, this error message is not possible to generate with bare JSF functionality.
    2) Another situation that gets us in trouble is when the label text we want in our error message is not on the page (or not in it's entirety). For example, your page could be split up into multiple parts with those parts having input fields with the same name. We would want the error message to include the page part as well as the field name. This is not easily achieved with the bare JSF functionality.
    So to generalize, any situation where a label component with a static value throughout the lifecycle is not available will cause difficulty.
    Please correct me if I am wrong on any of these points.
    Since in my app I had a lot of complicated pages to deal with, I solved my difficulties by writing a very simple framework that I called Message Decorator Framework (MDF). It enabled me to easily construct much more detailed error messages than what the standard JSF approach seems to allows for. MDF provides a mechanism to specify the label text to be applied to a validation or a conversion message by either a literal, an el expression or via an id of another ValueHolder and all of these work in data tables.
    The idea is a s such, and this is what i would like your opinion on:
    MDF provides more flexible message decoration by adapting the opposite approach to the one used by the JSF:
    1) Message decoration is decentralized. MDF wraps converters and validators on individual input fields and performs message text replacement right on the spot in the PROCESS_VALIDATIONS phase, when all of the pertinent data for resolving the label text is still available.(i.e the components in data tables would still have the correct values for the current row being validated)
    2) The label text to be used is specified by the input field, not the label. This allows the developer to reference any text value, instead of tying them to a specific label component.
    Pictures are better than words, so here is an architectural diagram:
    http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i1259440_ArchitectureDiagram.png
    The framework consists of two main classes, ConverterMessageDecorator and ValidatorMessageDecorator. I will just talk about the converter part, b/c the validator part is very similar but wraps a list of validators instead of one converter.
    So ConverterMessageDecorator is a JSF converter. Its purpose is to wrap the converter that is going to do the actual conversion work and decorate the FacesMessage inside ConverterException if one was thrown.
    The converter to wrap can be either determined automatically based on the type of the value reference of the input field or specified explicitly. This converter decorates the message by replacing all instances of the input fields id with the resolved label text. The power of this approach is that not only do you get a much more flexible way to specify what the label text is (either fieldLabel or fieldLabelComponent attributes), but now data tables are no longer a problem.
    Here are some usage examples:
    <h:inputText value='#{section33SetupBackingBean.contribution.sampleGatePct}'>
       <md:decorateConverterMessage fieldLabel= '#{msgs["section.34.setup.contribution.initial.sampling.gate.max.size"]}' />
    </h:inputText>
    etc
    <h:inputText value='#{section33SetupBackingBean.payment.sampleGatePct}'>
       <md:decorateConverterMessage fieldLabel= '#{msgs["section.34.setup.payment.initial.sampling.gate.max.size"]}' />
    </h:inputText>The two input fields have exactly the same labels on the screen (they are in two different parts of the page), so if we used their respective labels, the error messages would look the same for these two input fields.
    More complicated example:
    <h:dataTable value="#{paymentCalcBackingBean.currentPaymentPercentages}" var="currentPercentage" >
    <h:column>
      <ops:refDataDescription id="provinceLabelTextId" refDataType="provinceStateType"
                code="${currentPercentage.programProvince.provinceStateTypeCode}" />
    </h:column>
    <h:column>
      <h:inputText value="${currentPercentage.federalPercentage}">
    <md:decorateConverterMessage fieldLabelComponent="provinceLabelTextId"  valueRequired="true" >
       <f:converter converterId="ops.PercentageConverter" />
    </md:decorateConverterMessage>
    <md:decorateValidatorMessage fieldLabelComponent="provinceLabelTextId" >
       <f:validator validatorId="ops.PercentageValidator" />
    </md:decorateValidatorMessage>
    </h:column>
    etc
    </h:dataTable>This would produce errors shown in this screenshot: http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i1259418_Example3.png
    Here is another example that shows off what you can do by referencing other ValueHolders on the page.
    The code is exactly the same as the snippet shown above, but the inputText component is referencing a text box, so the label text is going to be whatever the user types into the text box:

    Does this approach seem reasonable to people, or am I reinventing the wheel? Please let me know.

  • Java 64-bit Windows 7 - Error with Tomcat Install

    Downloaded and ran jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe on a Win host (Dell PowerEdge R610 with 16 Core 2.27 GHz Intel Xeon) running Windows 7 64-bit. The website said if you're running a 64-bit Windows OS then download that file.
    When I run the command "java -version" it says,
    "C:\Users\plozanci>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_20"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)"
    I'm trying to install Apache Tomcat 6.0.26. Getting the error: "[206 javajni.c] [error] %1 is not a valid Win32 application."
    After searching the web, it looks like the Tomcat is looking for a 64-bit JRE but encountering a 32-bit version. I thought that the jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe file had the 32-bit & 64-bit versions. If this is true, how do I get Tomcat to use the right version?
    If its false, where is the 64-bit version for Windows 7?

    No. They are separate installers. The 32bit will run on a 64bit OS, but it is not 64bit. If you need the 64bit, you will need to download the 64bit installer.
    You will need: jre-6u20-windows-x64.exe
    Go: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    select: Download JRE
    select: Windows x64
    Happy downloading!
