Jsp errors swallowed (blame tiles?)

I've got a struts/tiles app that all of the sudden started swallowing jsp exceptions. Normally when I make a typo: (exagerrated)
<html>
<%! n %>
</html>
The page doesn't load at all AND I get an exception in the catalina logs. Recently, I stopped getting these errors in the catalina logs. The page is blank when I visit through struts/tiles (eg http://blah/test.do). This makes it really difficult to develop (baby stepping). However, I can get the error by visiting the underlying jsp page (http://blah/test.jsp). I've come across this before and I can't remember what jostled to get the errors logging again.
Does anyone have ANY idea/suggestion? (Even a suggestion of a more appropriate forum?) Googling for this has proven difficult :-)
Thanks in advance,
Amir

Thanks for the response. It turned out to be a "jar" problem of sorts.
Log4j.jar worked its way into the classpath, struts noticed this and started sending its error messages there (which wasn't configured, so I guess it went nowhere)
Adding a default log4j.properties file to WEB-INF/classes/ seems to take care of the problem. (Removing log4j.jar would probably also work)
http://www.mobilefish.com/developer/struts/struts_quickguide_log4j.html
log4j.rootLogger=ALL, stdout
log4j.appender.stdout=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender
log4j.appender.stdout.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout
log4j.appender.stdout.layout.ConversionPattern=[%5p] %d{mm:ss} (%F:%M:%L)%n%m%n%n
Thanks again,

  • Jsp trial - nitrox reports tiles error

    Hi,
    I just downloaded the nitrox trial version to use with Eclipse 3.0.1. I have a project that makes use of Java Server Faces and Tiles (an ibm sample from http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-jsf2/). To gain access to Tiles, I use the struts.jar and struts-el.jar libraries. I don't, however, use struts (i.e. there is no struts-config.xml).
    I can build and execute the code under Tomcat 5.0.25 and it works fine.
    The problem
    Nitrox, however, reports the following error with index.jsp in the Eclipse Problems tab at the bottom of the screen:
    "The tile ".index" cannot be found in the Struts tiles config files for this module."
    I suspect that tiles-def.xml is not being found. If I rename tiles-def.xml to tiles-def-mod.xml, I still get the same index.jsp error.
    Any idea why Nitrox is reporting this error?
    Details
    1. Tomcat-5.0\conf\server.xml has this line:
    <Context debug="0" docBase="C:\MyProjects\eclipse\cdstore\WebContent" path="/cdstore" reloadable="true"/>
    2. index.jsp and tiles-def.xml are located in:
    C:\MyProjects\eclipse\cdstore\WebContent\index.jsp
    C:\MyProjects\eclipse\cdstore\WebContent\WEB-INF\tiles-def.xml
    C:\MyProjects\eclipse\cdstore\WebContent\WEB-INF\web.xml
    3. index.jsp has two lines:
    <%@ taglib prefix="t" uri="http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/tags-tiles" %>
    <t:insert definition=".index" />
    4. web.xml has:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>tiles</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>org.apache.struts.tiles.TilesServlet</servlet-class>
    <init-param>
    <param-name>definitions-config</param-name>
    <param-value>/WEB-INF/tiles-defs.xml</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <init-param>
    <param-name>definitions-parser-validate</param-name>
    <param-value>true</param-value>
    </init-param>
    <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
    </servlet>

    I folowed your suggestions and added the struts stuff to my web.xml and placed an empty struts-config.xml under WEB-INF. I'm still receiving the same Nitrox error messages.
    I intentionally removed the end bracket and changed the <struts-config> tag to <struts-config. Nitrox picked this up and reported the error.
    When I made the same change to <tiles-definitions in the tiles-defs.xml file, Nitrox did not pick up the error.

  • JSP error page does not displayed on its own, includes in the original JSP

    Problem Description: - Exceptions in a Condition cause pages to fail to render.
    The actual issue is, the JSP error page does not displayed on its own, included in the original JSP Page when exception occurs.
    Problem Cause: As per the JSP specification when jsp content reached the buffer size (default 8KB) the page being flushed (Part of condent displays). The default autoFlush value is true.
    When the page buffer value is default size (8KB), and if any exception occurs after flushing the part of the content, instead of redirecting into error page, the error page content included in the original page.
    If i specify autoFlush="false" and with default buffer size, at the runtime if the buffer size is reached, i am getting stackoverflow error.
    To solve the above problem we can make it autoFlush=false and buffer=100KB. But we cant predict the actual size of the page.
    I found in one of the weblogic forum as no solution for this issue. Ref.
    http://support.bea.com/application?namespace=askbea&origin=ask_bea_answer.jsp&event=link.view_answer_page_clfydoc&answerpage=solution&page=wls/S-10309.htm
    Please provide me any solution to resolve the problem.

    Error-Page tags work best with an error.html pages. If you have an error.jsp page what I would do, and I have, is wrap my classes and jsp pages in a try catch block where you forward to the error jsp page and display anything you want. YOu can also do this with if else statements. I have used the tomcat error pages before but when I've implemented them I used java.lang.Exception as the error to catch not Throwable. I don't know if this would make a difference or have anything to do with your problem.

  • How to display a stack trace in a jsp error mage

    What is the best way to display a stack trace in a JSP error page?
    I use "${pageContext.exception.message}" for the exception message. Is there a comparable JSTL expression for the stack?

    Cool! it totally works.
    Thanks for pointing me to this post.

  • A JSP Error occured...

    Hi there!
    I have a JSP page that made a Query on a Oracle database. The JSP parse an XSL page whit what it found. If it's a new record, it create a page that will serve to insert a record. If the request found a record, it parse a page that will serve for update...
    When I retrive the query, it work fine. When I do an insert, it work fine.
    But When I UPDATE, it blow up!
    Here is the error message that i've got:
    A Servlet Error Occurred
    An unexpected error occured attempting to run this servlet.
    The most likely explanation is a problem with the servlet code.
    Please check the server log for a detailed message.
    I know that it seem easy to said that the error is in the code but we used that code elsewhere (with a much smaller request) and it worked fine!!!
    We've also run that code before on an other server and it worked fine!!!
    Is it a configuration problem??? We use OSA 4.0.8.1
    Or is it something else???
    I'm mutch despear because we have to get that up very soon!
    This error occur evry time I do an update.
    It cause also the server to "crash"...
    Not realy a crash but the application dont work anymore (the query and insert thing) we have to restart the OAS.
    If I dont restart the OAS, and I try to get to the JSP page I've got this error:
    JSP Error:
    Request URL:/jspmyproject/myproject_Query.jsp
    Exception:
    java.lang. OutOfMemoryError
    Thank to reply !

    Please increase the MAX_HEAP to 128M under JSP Config, Java Enviornmet and try.

    what kind of reasons we will get standard JSp Error.JSP error is a common error so you need to check the log files for details about the error. It could be related to JVM, resources, locks, database errors, ..etc.

  • Get response message in JSP error page

    Hi,
    Here's a simple one for someone. I HAVE been searching everywhere for the answer but its one of those things I just cant seem to find.
    If I call response.sendError(SC_FORBIDDEN, "Invalid roles"); from a servlet or filter, how can I retrieve the message "Invalid roles" in my JSP error page? (which I have mapped to 403 errors in web.xml).
    Its so simple yet I cannot figure out how to do it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert.

    I tried but had no luck. Below is my JSPDYNPAGE code...
    <%@ page import="javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse" %>
    <%@ page import="com.sapportals.portal.prt.component.IPortalComponentRequest,com.sapportals.portal.prt.component.IPortalComponentResponse"%>
    <HTML>
         <head>
         </head>
         <body>
    <%
    IPortalComponentRequest request = (IPortalComponentRequest) this.getRequest();
    HttpServletResponse servletResponse = request.getServletResponse(true);esss
    servletResponse.setStatus(500);
    %>
              </body>
         </HTML>
    It is not working showing portal run time error

  • Handle exception on server side and display a customized jsp error page

    Hi,
    I am developing a java/j2EE web application using servlet, jsp, ejb3 with JBOSS and ECLIPSE.
    Two cases can occur on the server side :
    1) either I have not an expected result in a method and in this case I want to display an error page (a JSP page I suppose) with a personnalized error message
    2) or I have an exception thrown and I want to display the exception message in the former JSP page
    I don't know how to cope with this problem of personnalized error message (or the message of a thrown exception) with a JSP page.
    Does anybody can help me ? Thank you
    Edited by: xflamant on Jun 20, 2009 10:51 AM

    For the case of an unknown Error, simply use a default error page.
    The redirection to this page can be accomplished by inserting folowing code into your web.xml:
         <error-page>
            <exception-type>java.lang.Throwable</exception-type>
            <location>/WEB-INF/jsp/error.jsp</location>
        </error-page>Known exception can be caught via a try-catch block.
    Then simply dispatch to the page you want displayed an add an attribute containing the error message to the response object.
    This attribute can then be used in the target page to diplay the error.

  • JSP error page in web.xml

    I had a JSP error page spcified through the attribute isErrorPage and referenced in the other JSPs through the errorPage attribute, and everything worked well.
    Then, I decided to specify that errorpage in the web.xml instead :
    <error-page>
      <exception-type>java.lang.Throwable</exception-type>
       <location>/error.jsp<location>
    </error-page>The page is found and everythiing, except that I don't get the Throwable info in the implicit exception object in error.jsp. There's nothing in exception.getMessage().
    Anybody knows why and the solution to this ?

    The JSP spec lets you get the Throwable through the javax.servlet.jsp.jspException request attribute.
    The servlet spec uses the javax.servlet.error.exception request attribute for the same thing.
    Therefore, because of the above unfortunate mismatch, when you switched to a global error page, you could no longer get the Throwable through the implicit exception obj, because the later retrieves Throwable from the javax.servlet.jsp.jspException request attribute.
    The solution would be to retrieve javax.servlet.error.exception from the request yourself in your error page.
