jsp:include from a Servlet???

Hi guys,
Does anybody know if there is a way of using <jsp:include> from a servlet?? It would save me alot of hassle!!

Of course <jsp:include> is a JSP tag so it requires JSP :-).
It is not clear exactly what you want to do, but here is one way to do includes. The JOT Servlets framework (http://www.jotobjects.com)
has a general include mechanism. Here is an example that could be configured with web.xml elements to merge (include) one web page into another without any Java programming:
<html>
<body>
... start of page
JOT.ContentName.Content
<!-- merges content from another file or URL -->
... rest of page
</body>
</html>

  • Problem using jsp:include from inside a custom tag

    Hi, All !
              I have a problem using <jsp:include> from inside a custom tag. Exception is:
              "java.lang.ClassCastException: weblogic.servlet.jsp.BodyContentImpl"
              Apparently, weblogic tries to cast BodyContentImpl to JspWriterImpl and
              could not do this. Is it a bug, since in the 1.1 spec is said: "The
              BodyContent is a subclass of JspWriter that can be used to process body
              evaluations so they can retrieved later on."
              My code is:
              <wfmklist:items>
              <jsp:include page="item.jsp" flush="true"/>
              </wfmklist:items>

    This is an area of contention with WL. It is not so tolerant with regards to
              the spec. I spent several days recently trying to convince it to accept the
              specification in regards to bodies and includes and it appears to have
              successfully rebuffed my efforts.
              Frankly, this is very disappointing. It appears that some shortcuts were
              taken on the way to JSP 1.1 support, and the result is a very hard-coded,
              inflexible implementation. As I have not seen the implementation myself, I
              hate to assume this, however one could posit that the term "interface" was a
              foreign concept during the implementation, other than as some annoying
              intermediary reference requiring an immediate cast to a specific Weblogic
              class, which in turn is apparently required to be final or have many final
              methods, as if being optimized for a JDK 1.02 JIT.
              I am sorry that I don't have any positive suggestions other than to use a
              URL object to come back in an execute the necessary "include" directly. You
              lose all context (other than session) and that can cause its own problems.
              However, you can generally get the URL approach to work, and you will
              hopefully avoid further frustration.

  • Problem in calling JSP page from a servlet

    can anyone please tell me how to call a JSP from servlet?
    My code is:
    ServletContext sc = this.getServletContext();
                                                 RequestDispatcher rd = sc.getRequestDispatcher("./Welcome.jsp");
                                                 if (rd !=null)
                                                      try
                                                           rd.forward(req, res);
                                                      catch (Exception e)
                                                           sc.log("---------------Problem invoking JSP.------------------", e);
    I n the browser when i call this servlet it gives error-404.
    NOT Found.
    please help.

    I would try to change "./Welcome.jsp" to "/Welcome.jsp". I'm not sure what that period will do.
    Are you able to access that JSP directly from your browser (even if it's not designed to be accessed that way)? If not, then you have some other problem.
    When you say you get a 404 when you access the servlet, is that when you access the servlet, or when it tries to forward to the JSP? If you get the 404 when you access the servlet, perhaps your servlet-mapping to the servlet is invalid.

  • JSP include from jar file

    I have a service that is packaged in a jar file that contains a jsp file that I want to use inside a <jsp:include>
    in my webapplication. Is this possible?
    <jsp: include .. jspFileInJarInWEB-INFLIB.jsp/>

    The JSP fragment page in question is actually a HTML form page. It is a form to be used specifically by a particular servlet. That is why they are "bundled" together in the same project, in the same package structure.
    I have multiple web applications that I want to include that form/servlet, so it gets added to these projects in the /WEB-INF/lib folder as a JAR library. But I don't want to recreate the form over and over again for each application. It would be nice if I could write a JSP page that wraps the fragment using an include directive to bring that fragment into the new page.
    So to do that with any other fragment I would write:
    <%@ include file="/WEB-INF/jsp/SOME_FORM.jsp" %>
    which works great if my fragment page is in the /WEB-INF/jsp subfolder. But if I want to access the JSP fragment as it is bundled in a JAR file, this:
    <%@ include file="/WEB-INF/lib/FORM.jar/SOME_FORM.jsp" %>
    doesn't work so good. It's just all wrong.
    I was wondering how I could just write one include statement to get what I need. There are work-arounds galore, but I thought if I could get this working it would be the simplest solution overall.

  • How to call a jsp file from an servlet and access the jsp file objects??

    Hi everybody
    I have an jsp file where it contains a vector object with some data and I have a servlet that needs to access this vector object . How can my servlet call for this jsp page and get the vector object. ?
    then an applet will be calling this servlet to get some other object created with the data contained within this vector object...so each time Applet ask the servlet for the object the servlet need to call for this jsp page somehow
    My main question is the communication servlet-jsp
    please if u have any clue I will appreciate it
    thanks

    Hi
    There are several ways to share objects between JSPs/Servlets.
    You can share objects by putting them in the request-in which case the objects lifetime is limited by that of the request, Another way is to store them in the session, againg the lifetime is limited by the lifetime of the session. To have objects that have to persistent over the application life-span use the servletContext to store the objects.
    Any good tutorial should help you get started. Please see the link below for a tutorial on Servlets/JSPs
    Note: Local variables in the JSP cannot be shared with other components as their scope is limited to that particular Page/Servlet.

  • How to get multiple selections from jsp page in my servlet

    Hello Everyone,
    I've a list that allows users to make multiple selections.
    <select name=location multiple="multiple">
        <option>
             All
        </option>
        <option>

        <option>
             Dub
        </option>
        <option>
             Mtv
        </option>
      </select>I want to get the selections made by user in jsp page from my servlet, selections can be multiple too.
    ArrayList locList = new ArrayList();
    locList = request.getParameter("location");when I do so, I get compilation error as the request returns string type. How do I then get multiple selections made by the user.
    Please let me know.

    For those kind of basic questions it would help a lot if you just gently consult the javadocs and tutorials.

  • Challenge forwarding from a servlet to a JSP

    Redirecting information from a servlet to a JSP
    Hello Everyone,
         I am processing the contents of a html form using a servlet. After processing the
    information received and storing it into a javabean I am trying to pass control onto a jsp for
    display. At this stage the jsp does not display as desired due to a URL challenge. The URL
    which references my jsp is:
    http://localhot/ferngully/prefset.jspThis url has been designated to the jsp page 'prefset.jsp' by the application specific web.xml
    file (...I am using Tomcat 5!), the relevant contents of which follow:
    <servlet>
         <servlet-name>PreferenceSet</servlet-name>
         <jsp-file>/prefset.jsp</jsp-file>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
         <servlet-name>PreferenceSet</servlet-name>
         <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset.jsp</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>If I access the page with the afore mentioned URL it displays correctly. However the URL which
    is returned to the browser after the servlet has forwarded control to the JSP is:
    http://localhost/ferngully/ferngully/PreferencesThe following form markup is used to access the servlet:
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="ferngully/Preferences"> I know that I have mapped the servlet correctly because the servlet performs it's programatic tasks happily :)
    I am using code within the servlet to forward control to the JSP, and I believe that this is the crux of my challenge.
    The code for the servlet is listed below.
    package userpreferences;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class PreferencesServlet extends HttpServlet
         public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException
              super.init(config);
         public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              doPost(request, response);
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              String url = "/prefset.jsp";
              ServletContext servCont = getServletContext();
              RequestDispatcher reqDispatch = servCont.getRequestDispatcher(url);
              reqDispatch.forward(request, response);
    }I believe that the above highlighted code section is responsible for my challenge. I have tried changing the String url to "/ferngully/prefset.jsp",
    however there was no improvement in functionality.
    Can somebody please explain to me how I can go about directing the control of this process from the servlet to the jsp correctly? Particularly
    how I can go about making the url returned to the client correct for accessing the jsp page? Do I need to delete the mapping entry for the
    jsp page in web.xml? I am new to servlets & jsp so any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kind Regards
    Davo

    3. >The following form markup is used to access the servlet:
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="ferngully/Preferences">Question 1:
         why do you specify your contextname in action attribute again ?
         General funda about urls:
         When you have an index.html loaded through http://localhost/index.html, then a link in that html whose url is,
         1. say, preferences.html (no forward slashes preffixed or suffixed) would load the html from the same folder.
         2. say, /ferngully/prefences.html, would attempt to load a html from the ferngully folder that is a sub-directory
    of your web-application
         3. say, /ferngully/prefences.jsp, would attempt to load a html from the ferngully folder that is a sub-directory
    of your web-application
         When you have a servlet whose url-pattern is set to intercept requests, it would intercept requests that have that
    pattern it is defined to intercept in web.xml (for example all the above requests in 1,2 and 3 would be intercepted
    by a servlet whose pattern is ferngully/*)
         Now if your action is not a specific resource (.jsp or .html), something like /preferences, this would map to a url
    /ferngully/preferences. (for which a resource should be defined in web.xml - either a servlet or a jsp)
    However the URL which is returned to the browser after the servlet has forwarded control to the JSP is:
    http://localhost/ferngully/ferngully/PreferencesTell us the url of the original html
    I know that I have mapped the servlet correctly because the servlet performs it's programatic tasks happily :)Tell us the url-appetrn of the servlet that intercepted your request
    Particularly
    how I can go about making the url returned to the client correct for accessing the jsp page?The url in the browser is always the request url, you cannot change it to the url of the jsp even which rendered the page
    through a fwd from the servlet.
    Do I need to delete the mapping entry for the
    jsp page in web.xml?Not necessary. You can access the jsp directly from the servlet while forwarding by
    1. specifying the exact path to the jsp. For example if the jsp is under a folder called jsps, your request dispatcher
    url ought to be /jsps/prefset.jsp
    2. specifying the jsp's url-pattern as specified in web.xml
    Questions Contd
    2. Why does the url pattern have to have a .jsp suffixed.
    From your code
    <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset.jsp</url-pattern>It could equally well have been
    <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset</url-pattern>And then your servlet would have to forward it to ("/ferngully/prefset")
    2. Your jsp-file mapping is in this form
    <jsp-file>/prefset.jsp</jsp-file>This assumes that the jsp is in the top-level folder of your web-application and not under
    any sub-directories. Correct ?
    cheers,
    ram.

  • Try again: jsp:include fails with NPE in ValueBindingImpl

    JSF 1.1, RichFaces 3.1.3, WebLogic 9.2.2.
    I asked about this a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't get any useful responses.
    I have a simple "toy" application using a tabpanel that works fine right now. There is one tab that I will want to repeat several times, with only variations in the data in the fields (and the tab title). So, I copied the current template of that tab into an include file and I'm trying to include it with "jsp:include" from the original page, with a parameter. I've read all the suggestions about how to get jsp:include working with JSF, but it still doesn't work.
    When I display the page, I just get this:

                label="Property: #{ratingRequest.propertyList[0].propertyID}"

              </h:inputText>
              <rich:message for="valueIn" showDetail="true"/>
         </h:panelGrid>
    </rich:tab>I don't have the source for the JSF implementation, but when I disassemble the class with the NPE, I see that the exception occurs in the ValueBindingImpl constructor that takes a Application object, and the NPE might occur because either the FacesContext or ExpressionInfoInstancePool is null (I think the former is the most likely, but I don't know why).

    Done. The results are ironically very similar to what happened with the BEA implementation, but I have a feeling this is something else, because it's failing not on the included page, but on a value binding on the main page. Perhaps I'm missing some property settings in my web.xml while using the RI.
    The entire stack trace is pretty large. I would have only included the excerpt from the root cause, but the JSF RI stack trace seems to have some interesting info up to that point. You'll see from the code at the top of the stack that either the FacesContext or the Application is null.

  • Including output in a JSP page from a separate Web App

              I seem to be having a bit of a problem including the output from a sevlet invoked
              from a separate
              Web Application in the same domain. I have a servlet callsed 'WebApp2\Web-inf\classes\packagename\targetServlet'.
              I am attempting to invoke 'targetServlet' from 'WebApp1\somepage.jsp' using the
              jsp:include directive but I seem
              to be having a path problem because the servlet is not invoked. Anyone have any
              suggestions?

              Mark:
              You cannot do that with <jsp:include>. You can read the JSP spec to learn more
              about it.
              Anyway, there are some tags out there that do allow what you need. I, for one,
              use Struts' <bean:include> tag. See http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/
              The new JSTL (JSP Standard Tag Library - http://jakarta.apache.org/taglibs/doc/standard-doc/intro.html)
              provides the <c:import> tag.

  • Servlet not found (jsp include)

    Trying to include a servlet from a jsp. Put the servlet under the default_web_app\web-inf\classes\<package dir structure>\<servlet class name>, and included it with "<jsp:include page="servlet.package.hierarchy.ServletName" flush="true"/>
    That I could think of. OC4J is serving jsps fine through Apache, but OC4J can't find the servlet. Ideas?

    Syntax error in source
    /mapsis/contacts4_mockup.jsp.java:30: Undefined variable or class name: <bean id>
    I'll try messing w/ the syntax, but thanks in advance for any ideas.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
    Is your bean part of a package ?
    Here is an example

    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="PreFetch" value="5"/>
    <jsp:setProperty name="cbean" property="StmtCacheSize" value="2"/>

  • Are not interpreted JSTL tags in a JSP page including in a servlet.

    Hi people,
    I have a project where una page (index.jsp) includes a servlet (MyServlet), that consult a persistence class and get a List of objects (Users),
    then the servlet passes the List to a Request object and includes another JSP page (showUsers.jsp). And this is conceptually correct, but don´t works, the JSTL tags are not interpreted in showUsers.jsp.

    I suggest putting System.out.println() throughout your servlet code and out.println() in your JSP pages to see exactly what is called and when.
    As a general rule, JSP files are to display data only, and submit back to a servlet. The servlet does all the business logic and dispatches to the appropriate >JSP page. The JSP shouldn't have any business logic. Including the servlet looks kinda like including business logic. Actually, in a MVC design, your >presentation, control, busines, and database layers have their own isolated responsibilities.
    I suggest the servlet put data as one java bean in request scope via request.setAttribute() and dispatch to the JSP page. The JSP page gets the data via ><useBean> tag. The JSTL gets the variables from the useBean tag and uses the data from there to display it. Really, this is my web.xml file...

    Respect of your last comment, I am not a expert in MVC, but I understand that the view layer can make calls to the Controller layer, I am wrong?
    evnafets wrote:
    It's not. However thats not code, but the generated HTML.
    As Balusc pointed out it's the result of running this JSP page without importing the tag library at the top.
    Because the tag library is not declared, it treats the <c:forEach> and other tags as template text, and basically ignores them.
    It then evaluates the ${items} attribute as an expression in template text, calling toString() on it.
    Cheers,
    evnafets      The file showUsers.jsp are included into the index.jsp page, that's have the header taglib. Could this works?

  • Including JSPFs from Java Servlets[Solved]

    EDIT:
    After reading up a bit more on JSP Fragments I realized that they don't work from a Servlet environment. I should have researched a bit more before posting. By switching the files to JSPs, everything works perfectly.
    Original:
    Hopefully I can make this post make sense because there is very little code I can post in a public environment like this. Here goes nothing...
    I have a Servlet, that includes a JSP file using RequestDispatcher.include(). This JSP works fine, and it gets compiled and shown properly. In this "wrapper" jsp, there are multiple calls to various methods in a class which do things such as printing, and including more jspfs, based on the data stored in an XML file.
    For some reason, when including JSPFs from the java methods, the raw JSPF's content is being displayed, rather than a compiled version of the content.
    Here is an example JSPF:
    <%= "Content Coming from a JSPF" %>Here is the code that includes the JSPF:
    this.request.getRequestDispatcher(path).include(this.request, this.response);The JSPF shows up in the right spot and everything, but it's the raw JSPF content, not what it should be showing.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    I dont think you can directly do this
    tagLT %@ include file="/irj/go/km/docs/etc/public/mimes/PMIS/Static%20Contents/sample.html"% tagGT
    check what happens if you directly paste this URL in browser.
    Instead, you can create a KM Document iView from the HTML and paste the URL of the iView in the JSP. Or the best way is to create a page, assign the iViwe to the page and generate a short URL for the page and have this short URL in your include.
    You can check this for short URLs

  • Include using jsp:include for a file from the docroot directory.

    Hello,
    I try to include one file from the doocroot but only can import files from the context (War deployed).
    when I put
    <jsp:include page="/foo.htm">
    to include this file: http://www.mydomain.com/foo.html
    it try to show this file: http://www.mydomain.com/mycontext/foo.html
    it puts ever the context before the name of my file.
    How can I include this file.
    Thanks
    PD: obviously 'foo.html' is in the doocroot.

    From within a JSP you have a reference to a PageContext called pageContext. This has a method getServletContext(). From the ServletContext you can find the real path the servlet lives in. So...
    File basePath = new File(pageContext.getServletContext().getRealPath("/"));Now basePath contains your path $Catalina/webapps/webservices. Then it's just a matter of working relative to that, e.g.:
    File usersFile = new File(basePath, "users.txt");
