JSP web format vs. paper web format
i have a jsp report in both web and paper format. I want the functionality of automatically creating the parameter forms that deploying through rwservlet gives me, however I also want the web formatting i get when deploying the report as a jsp.
without coding a jsp form for each rport, that calls the jsp, is there a way to do this?
what Iam looking for is a way to get the rwservlet deployed report to look as much like a jsp deployed version as possible. can anyone give me instructions?

a way to get the rwservlet deployed report to look as much like a jsp deployed version as possibleIf you create a report through the Report Wizard, and you use one of the default templates, you will get papaer and web layouts that look similar. However, if you have done manual / custom formatting in the JSP report, you cannot get the same output in rwservlet-deployed paper report.
For a JSP report, I guess there is no way around creating your own HTML parameter forms.

All is not lost, however. You have two routes to deploy the Web Service on Oracle9iAS:
1. Use DCM, which is the command line interface to deploy applications/webservices/wars/ears on Oracle9iAS. It does not have the dependency on UDDI.
To deploy a Web service using DCM, say your Web service ear file were named test.ear your deployment command would look something like:

I suspect your deployment problem from Oracle9i JDeveloper may be (this may be an incorrect assumption) due to trying to use a connection that is setup as if Oracle9iAS is a standalone OC4J.

I think I am experiencing the same problem here and I'm struggling to implement the solution, mainly because I am a complete newbie at jsp reports (and most things webby).
1) Can I add the code following code directly to the web source? If not then how do I find the css file being used?

Upload JSP web site to Tomcat web server

I have created a JSP web Application in my localhost. Here as my web/Application server I used Sun java system Application server.
Now The site is ready to upload to its remote location.
Since this is my first attempt to JSP web site I have ask some help from you guys.
Now the problem is on our remote server we have Apache Tomcat/5.5.17
Is it a possible to Put our local site there at tomcat.
Then How can I do that.?

Best way to manage images on jsp web application

Am developing a jsp web application, in that project, the user will upload the image files, now I created an image directory in the context root and when the image is uploaded by the user it is saved in the /images directory and the image path is saved in the database. I can display this image using the <img src="images/a.jsp" > tag.
but when I rebuild the project all the images in the /images directory get deleated but the image path is remained in the database, is there any method that I make /image dir outside my project context root so that when I rebuild the project the /images dir can get changed and my project will save images outside the context root that is in the /images dir which is now outside the project context root. and is it possible to display those images using <img src""> tag. because this time my /images dir is at D:/images . what could be the best method or way to handle images with the web application.

How to save the relevant data ??
.Create a backup folder Workstation on which you are hosting your application where you can store all the uploaded files which is outside the scope of webserver(However we can write a dedicated servlet which can access that file) and make sure we pickup from any the folder path from a specfic MessageResource bundle or an context/servlet init parameter in web.xml.
.Write a Upload servlet/Backing Bean which saves all the files in the discussed folder using utility packages like Commons FileUpload,Oreilly MultipartRequest & etc and then register saved fileName in the database user specfic table specific to user.
How to display the Image ??
.Write a dedicated servlet which can pickup user related fileName specfic information from the database and the read the file from backup folder by constructing the path from the entry made as a init param in web.xml or any other custom MessageResource bundle and then stream the Image data using the ServletOutputStream.
NOTE: do not forget to pickup & setImage file ContentType & Set the content length.
.Just try to render the JSP view file where we are displaying the displaying the images by calling the dedicated ImageServlet.

The second method would more or less the same but here we would save the uploaded file
content is saved in the Database as a Blob and we would retrive it back using a dedicated image servlet again.
However,in terms of performance the second case implementation is very costly.

Hi there,
I have a question regarding application state in a jsp web app. Can value be passed across different server like the use of cookie and session? If so what do I need to do? I'm current running the same web app on two different server because of an external plugins features that I'm using.
ex: If I start at the main webpage on Server A and intial an application variable called "test = A" and then directed to a second page on Server B and try to change the same variable to say "Test = B", now when I go back to the initial page on Server A, I should see "Test = B" not "Test = A". But I'm seeing "Test = A", my initial guess is that there when my application move to a second page on a different Server it started up a new state which on the page on the second Server will recognize while Server A still retain the application initial state.
So back to question, is it possible to have the same Application state run on two different Server? If so please provide me an example or a source to resolve this. Thanks for all you help.

How to call the JSP(Web layout) instead of paper layout...

Iam using Reports 10g. I have created a simple employees report. I have added a listbox in the jsp page by adding small Html and javascript code like below.

You are running a jsp report through rwservlet. In this case paper layout will be displayed. You have to deploy your jsp as web report to get the web layout. Please refer to the doc below, which describes how to deploy the web report.

MochooUse web.show_document instead of Run_Report_Object. If the jsp contains a paper layout you can still use Run_Report_Object, but you have to specify the filename extension .jsp along with the filename.

Problem with Configuring Tomcat for running jsp web applications..Plz HELP
I am using Tomcat 5.5 and Jdk 1.5.0_12 and Oracle 10g. I am using jdbc-odbc bridge connection
to connect to the database. I have placed my project folder called
tdm under the webapps folder in Tomcat. This 'tdm' folder consists of

I have set the context path to /tdm in the server.xml file. Should this be placed in context.xml?
My first page in the project is called Homepage.html. To start my project I give http://localhost:5050/tdm/homepage.html
in a browser. Here I accept a username and password from the user and then do the validation in
a valid.jsp file, where I connect to the database and check and use jsp:forward to go to next pages
accordingly. However when I enter the username and password and click Go in the homepage, nothing is
displayed on the next page. The URL in the browser says valid.jsp but a blank screen appears.
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN SO? DOES IT MEAN THAT TOMCAT IS NOT RECOGNIZING JAVA IN MY SYSTEM OR IS IT A PROBLEM
WITH THE DATABASE CONNECTION OR SOMETHING ELSE? I FEEL THAT TOMCAT IS NOT EXECUTING JSP COMMANDS?
IS IT POSSIBLE?WHY WILL THIS HAPPEN?
I set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment to the jdk and tomcat folders resp.
Is there any other thing that I need to set in classpath? Should I have my project as a
WAR file in the webapps of TOMCAT or just a folder i.e. directory structure will fine?I am using Tomcat 5.5 and Jdk 1.5.0_12 and Oracle 10g. I am using jdbc-odbc bridge connection
to connect to the database. I have placed my project folder called
tdm under the webapps folder in Tomcat. This 'tdm' folder consists of
a collection of html pages,jsp pages and images of my project. Also I created a
WEB-INF folderand in that I have lib folder which contains catalina-root.jar
, classes12.jar and nls_charset.jar files. And also in the WEB-INF folder I have the web.xml

I have set the context path to /tdm in the server.xml file. Should this be placed in context.xml?
My first page in the project is called Homepage.html. To start my project I give http://localhost:5050/tdm/homepage.html
in a browser. Here I accept a username and password from the user and then do the validation in
a valid.jsp file, where I connect to the database and check and use jsp:forward to go to next pages
accordingly. However when I enter the username and password and click Go in the homepage, nothing is
displayed on the next page. The URL in the browser says valid.jsp but a blank screen appears.
WHY DOES IT HAPPEN SO? DOES IT MEAN THAT TOMCAT IS NOT RECOGNIZING JAVA IN MY SYSTEM OR IS IT A PROBLEM
WITH THE DATABASE CONNECTION OR SOMETHING ELSE? I FEEL THAT TOMCAT IS NOT EXECUTING JSP COMMANDS?
IS IT POSSIBLE?WHY WILL THIS HAPPEN?
I set the JAVA_HOME and CATALINA_HOME environment to the jdk and tomcat folders resp.
Is there any other thing that I need to set in classpath? Should I have my project as a
WAR file in the webapps of TOMCAT or just a folder i.e. directory structure will fine? -
Creating a wizard in jsp web application
I have a web application completely written in jsp. I want to include a wizard within it (very much like we have 'CREATE CHART/GRAPH WIZARD' in MS EXCEL). How can i do it using jsp?

JSP is a web-based technology ,, so im afraid it will not do a wizard in the concept of stand-alone applications.

I am having one doupt regarding web.xml in Jsp . I really donot know when the web.xml is required and when it is not required.
Actually I have developed one jsp application without web.xml ,it is running fine when i use Tomcat5.0 .
when i try to run the same application by using Tomcat6.0 , it is not running .
I came to know web.xml is heart of Web application when gone through Servlet/Jsp book.
but i donot understand how it is working without web.xml when i run with tomcat5.0 , why not with Tomcat6.0

I think question one comes down to whether Oracle Reports is supported on Tomcat and the answer is no.

Guide to developing SECURE TOMCAT/JSP web apps - ??

It would be very useful to have a checklist or guidelines to ensure a JSP/tomcat web site one develops is secure, in particular for the scenario where the web application is not huge/complex &/or is developed by part-time developers. That is I guess I'm generally asking for the easiest way of ensuring one develops a secure JSP/tomcat app.
Q1 - Does anyone know of a tutorial/checklist for ensuring a JSP/tomcat web app is secure? The types of things I'm thinking of include the following items, which I've put forward as specific questions to the mail group in their own right.
Q2 - How do you ensure directory's under doc root can't be viewed? (ie users see a directory listings)
- is putting in an index.html in each sub-directory a solid answer?
- can this be handled in one hit via WEB.XML entries? if so an example if possible?
Above and beyond basic User Authentication checking (eg username/password check at beginning of session) what is an easy but secure way of checking -:
Q3 check that user (ie specific) is allowed to access a specific JSP page? (assuming the web app is a totally JSP based solution, ie no controller servlet frontend, ie and that all JSP pages are effectively assessable under docroot). Easy way of doing this?
eg (a) put specific check at beginning of each JSP page?
(b) other?

Q4 given that a user is allowed to access that JSP page, check that he is allowed to view the data which he has requested? (ie stop people determining how the URL with parameters is constructed and manually changing the parameters - eg changing "http://www.test/test.jsp?id=3", manually "http://www.test/test.jsp?id=4". Easy way of doing this?

Q5 Is it generally acceptable, given appropriate precautions are taken, to setup a web site with all JSP files assessable under doc root, and that the manner in which the user navigates around the application is based on direct calls from the browser to the next JSP page with parameters? (again one concern I have is eg changing "http://www.test/test.jsp?id=3", manually "http://www.test/test.jsp?id=4"). If this is not acceptable what is recommended?

(b) for example having to specifically put a controller servlet as a front end, and then direct to JSP pages which are hidden?
- in this case how can one hide specific directories under doc root?

Q6. Regarding image security I assume one really does have to store them outside doc root and develop a small "getImage" servlet so that requests to images can be verified to ensure that (assuming the app lets users load images) the end user can't see another user's image?
Q7. Any other general checklist items for a simple JSP/tomcat web site re security one should check for???

GregHave you ever looked at the Jakarta struts framework for developing web apps? You could then incorporate your custom designed security both into your own extension of the controller servlet (check if particular user has access to certain pages / actions). You can also design your own custom tags which determine whether a particular user has access to certain parts of the page. You cal also perform additional checks in the actions, to ensure that the user does have access to certain actions (i.e. checking parameters etc.)
