Judging a Professional Grade

Hi, this may seem like an amateur question (well, it is, I guess), but here's my issue:
I just got into using Color v1 after many years on FCP and I bought myself a Matrox MXO2 Mini (Composite/Component/HDMI out) to help my grading.
At home I have an old CRT I am using, at my friends house he has a mid-range Samsung HDTV, and at work I have a Full HD 60" Sony Bravia (it's massive anyway).
I grade on Color using these monitors and my movie ends up being a lot darker than when I did a brief grade on FCP using my MacBook Pro" (unibody 1st gen) LED screen.
I'm concerned that for sending the movie digitally and DVDs, it's going to be too dark if I use the monitor's to grade as opposed to my LED screen. So how do I judge a professional grade that will be good over all formats/mediums? Do I just have to find an equilibrium? Or am I doing it wrong.
Ideally I want this to look its best on a digital projector at short film festivals and on my DVD screeners (to get into those festivals)... Any tips?
This is a very vague question I know, but perhaps you guys and girls have some experience and can pass it on...
Thanks for reading this far.

COLOR operates in CCIR601/709 space which has a gamma coefficient of 2.2.
Your graphics monitor operates in 1.8 space, so everything carried out in 2.2 space will look darker.

  • Any recommendations? DVD-R Professional Grade

I wanted to know if anyone could recommend/suggest a good professional grade DVD-R disk? I notice that after awhile, even if I don't play the disk often, the DVD starts to skip or the quality is already bad. I usually solve the problem by burning it again, but I think it's kind of tedious to recopy my movies every year. I also give these movies as gifts to my family and students, and would hate for this to happen to them. I would like them to last a little longer.
    Any suggestions?

I've never had this problem. I use Verabtim DVD-R burned at 4X or slower from a disk image.
Verbatim makes a medical grade for critical situations.

I've also bought gold DVD-Rs for archiving digital images of vacations.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E won't even HHB professional grade  4.7GB-A DVD-Rs

Neither will my external LaCie drive. Both recorders load and record TDK, Maxell, Sony, Fuji, and even Memorex discs just fine. But when I bought a professional grade DVD for more stability, zip.
    Any ideas?

Yes, my quess is the Brand , the Quality, and the Format of the Media all could be the reason.
Here is a guide for you,
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
There is a big difference in the Media on the Market, most of us as consumers are not even aware of this difference. The Difference is mainly in the Quality of the Media and the Correct Format of the Media we select. Yes many of the newer macs have the capability to use the newer media like +R and +RW and DL. I find that using high quality DVD-R Media solves most problems. The reason being that DVD-R Media is the most widely used and recognised across the board for computers, and players a-like.
Here is another link explaining that.

Always be sure you have the latest Firmware Update from both Apple's Software Update feature as well as checking with the Manufactures web site as well.

  • Professional Grade CD Import

    Hey Everyone,
I was hoping that you guys could help me answer a question that I have. I am starting a small business that specializes in mp3 and other audio products and I was thinking about adding a CD to digital format conversion service, but I do not think that my Powermac and iTunes will cut it. It would take forever to copy an individuals entire music collection using this consumer method, so does anyone have a more professional method of doing this?
It needs to be quick and allow the songs to be converted to many different formats (mp3, wmv, aac, loss-less, etc.). I think that this would work best with different hardware, not just different software.
Please do not take this wrong and think that I am bashing my mac because I am not. I currently own 4 macs, have been a long time user, and owned one as my very first computer. I just think that a piece of hardware that specializes in this job will be able to do it quicker, and I do not have the time to sit and wait for 20 minutes of importing per CD. Now if there was a way that I could put all of the CD's in my 200-disc CD Changer and have my mac automate importing all of them, then we would be in business.
Let me know what you guys think about this. Thanks for your help. You can always depend on the Apple community...It's a beautiful thing!
    Thanks,
    Jason

I'm sorry, I did not mean to sound condescending.
It should not take 20 minutes for your computer to rip a CD, unless the CD is heavily scratched. It never takes me more than 5 minutes to rip a CD on my laptop. When I was using my old Power Mac G4 with an LG GCC-4320B combo drive, I could rip as fast as 20X. If you get a modern, fast drive, you should be able to rip a CD yourself in 2-5 minutes. There are programs like Max for OS X, and Exact Audio Copy and Foobar2000 for Windows, that can rip to multiple file formats at once.
I don't know what specific hardware CD ripping services use, but the fact remains that an optical drive is an optical drive. If someone has invented superfast optical drives beyond what is already available to modern consumers, then I would think they'd be out in the market by now. I assume CD ripping services just have multiple computers with multiple drives, maybe multiple employees, and well-oiled procedures. They may use an internal database and scripts of some kind for auto-tagging, so they don't have to worry about entering in tags manually or fixing the sometimes-bad info you get from Gracenote or FreeDB. They may or may not be even sophisticated enough to care about cover art.
Using a stereo component CD changer would probably end up being even slower, because they aren't capable of playing at more than 1X, so it would end up taking the full running time of those 200 CDs to rip them all.

  • "professional" grade DVD vs. DVD studio vs. what I do

hi folks - I'm thinking about sending my short film to a festival soon and on their entry form, they say
"We strongly suggest that DVD screeners submitted to the festival come from a professionally authored source. We have found that a high percentage of home authored DVD disks do not function properly in our fully compatible progressive scan DVD players."
ASIDE from the fact that who wants to spend 500 bucks on a professionally authored stack of 500 DVDs for a 10-minute short film, or any film in this day and age... ASIDE from that, and why their fancy player doesn't play the most simply made discs... --- I wonder whether the DVDs I make, via a quicktime movie dragged into DVDStudio and burned. I don't use compressor, can't make head nor tail of it, but jeez... I just don't know.
    RM
    Anyone care to comment?

I read this differently. The key word for me in "authoring." I see this as an very poorly worded attempt to tell people not to try to make a professional-style DVD with scenes, audio setup menus, bloopers, commentary, and previews. Seems to me what they want is the simplest DVD possible. In DVDSP, that's known as a First Play.
You can make a simple phone callto the organizers and ask nicely to have this statement explained to you. Do NOT use email! They will be swamped by email. Be nice, be patient, ask about the weather, admit you don't understand the clause and just want to make sure your DVD makes it through the first wave of technical checks.

  • Best low cost professional-grade camera?

    Hey videographers,
I need to upgrade from a consumer to professional camcorder.
Can you recommend a reliable camcorder with 2 audio channels, great image stabilization, best picture quality, firewire, battery life and tape features at the professional level?
I'd love to have a Sony HVR-Z1U (but that will have to wait till I'm a little richer). Any second runner ups under $3000?
    powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi,
I use the Sony FX1 and I'm very happy with the image quality. I recently bought an extended time battery, that gives me about 350 minutes of recording time. I like the film 24 fps, saturation mode. The regular video mode looks very clear and high contrast. But the film saturation mode, is warm and soothing to the eyes. Sound is ok.... but I bought a converter box so that I can use XLR inputs. I bought it off of ebay from Datavis for about 3150.00 $. BTW, i buy alot of my film props off of ebay too, but don't tell anyone.

  • Why do we still have no pro-grade email app for the mac platform?

This is a combination of a question and a rant, I suppose. When I first came to the Mac platform back in 2003, I looked to see what the best email clients were and was surprised to find nothing that I thought was really strong. I started with Mail, hated it, switched to Entourage, and then since that time  I've used or demoed about everything I can find. Powermail, Eudora, Mailsmith in years past, and more recently Postbox and Sparrow.  I find all of them sorely lacking and it just keeps begging the question in my mind: why hasn't anyone yet created a truly professional-grade email application? I honestly think there's a huge market for it, and I think a lot of people would be willing to spend $30-50 for an app that got it right.
Right now, I use Mail with the add-ons MailTags and Mail Act-On, and  I've got my workflows and practices down to a pretty tight level. I am an adherent of inbox zero concepts/GTD and I practice them. Like many of you I get a lot of email, probably 200-300 per day.  There is no application I use on my computer more intensively than email, and yet it's the one app that is probably the most lacking from a development standpoint.
here are some of the things I'd love to see:
    - support for IMAP, POP3 and Exchange
    - an attractive, Mac-like user interface. Could Mail get any uglier? Why yes, yes it could, we now have Mail in Lion! Holy crap, were they incentivized to make it as dull and unattractive an app as they possibly could? If so, that team must be getting huge bonuses this christmastime.
    - industry compliant tagging
    - robust search functionality. Let me do quick spotlight-based searches, or give me a search dialogue box where I can construct more complex queries.
    - robust smart folder functionality. Mail does ok here, but it could be a lot better.
    - global rules (which Mail has but an app like Postbox doesn't), and then the ability to either have the rules applied automatically to all messages, or to fire a rule "on-demand" with respect to a single selected email (in other words, build in Mail Act-On functionality)
    - integration with social media. Postbox does a nice job with this. Hit their info pane button and you see a nice summary of all the links and possible social media interactions available via that selected email
    - integration with cloud-based file storage, and apps like Evernote, DevonThink, Omnifocus, etc
    - an intuitive, flexible layout that allows me to see my accounts and folder structures the way I want to see them, not the way the app forces me to lay them out.  Mail does a much better job of this than Postbox, for example.
    - integration with industry-standard archival practices. For example, integrate with MailSteward.
Mail is honestly not that far away, but they've been "not that far away" for the last 8 years I've been using a Mac.  I keep thinking SOMEBODY has to get this right and step up to fill this need, and nobody does. What  I'd really love to see is the OmniGroup (the guys that make fine apps like Omnifocus, Omnigraffle, Omnioutliner, etc...) step up and make "OmniMail". Give me an interface and a user experience I look forward to using, not one I use in spite of the interface. Give me a simple, efficient structure with depth and power under the hood that I can customize and tailor to my workflows.
if any developers read this, I am begging you: create this product. I've read every email app review I can find, visited a ton of blogs, user forums, etc..., and I think there is a huge demand for this kind of an app. If I did such coding, I would take the project on myself, but I'm just a user, not a developer.
Hope it happens someday. From my perspective, it's sorely needed.

I agree completely; email applications on the Mac lag (and I agree with the OP's frustration with responses as well).
I also have settled on Mail with Mail ActOn and MailTags; this functionality should be incorporated into the OS. I actually like using Outlook in Win 7 better; it's super easy to connect files, contacts, email and other stuff right from one application. And Win 7 has better preview and tagging built in, better than QuickLook. On the server side we desparately need gmail to use tags, but I don't see that happening. I still prefer the labeling scheme it has over Apple's mail, however. But I also find that it confuses many users (labels vs folders).
There are also other applications that integrate email functionality, like SOHO Organizer, or Contactizer. Good, but not the email holy grail.
I'd like to see communications built into the Finder or system, which badly needs an overhaul. It hasn't changed much since the 90's and shows it. Communication, whether it be email, tweets, social media posts, sharing, etc, is such an integral function of all work you do on a computer it should be better, um, integrated into all applications. You should be able to send data from any application to others in a variety of formats without having to go into an email application. Sure, you can now do this to a certain extent with either built-in menu items or services, but it's clunky. For example, when you write something you can either "save" and write to disk somewhere, or "export" in a different format, or maybe "email." All of those choices should at least be part of one dialog; it's just as likely you want to email, post, share or tweet what you just wrote, so just  having a "save" dialog is way outmoded.
So, yeah, somebody get on this.

  • Professional video conversion software that converts .mov to OGG Theora and/or WebM?

I'm looking for a professional grade video conversion software that can convert Quicktime (.mov) files to HTML5 video formats such as Ogg Theora and WebM. There are tons of free ones but I haven't found one that does a very good job. I've tried Bigasoft's converters but I'm a bit disappointed with their very basic quality settings. I'd like to have more control over parameters such as bitrates, variable passes, etc. Does anyone know of something like this? It's also hard to trust if some of the converters out there are legit.
    Thanks!

I just found out about Firefogg and it seems to be working well enough for my immediate needs. Still curious to see if there is anything better out there though.

  • Is there a way to create a slideshow viewable with a DVD player?

Hi there, is there amongst the Apple programs (or else) something that would allow me to show my digital photos on TV with a DVD player? Manually commanded with the remote, or with auto time lapse, fading or transitions?

I tested both Photo Magico and iDVD. Both produce a nice slideshow with good image quality when previewed on the computer. PhotoMagico has some really professional grade blending and zooming effects, and allows placement of multiple sound tracks, which is not possible with iDVD where you just drop one file and it plays in buckle.
The problem with both is that when the slide show is encoded, it looses too much quality! Images loose their detail, their colour depth, and they flicker inacceptably. The worst is with PhotoMagico who sends the already compressed file to iDVD to be compressed again and burnt. The loss of quality from the very neat preview to the resulting DVD is enormous. Sent to Toast Titanium, it's a little better but aliasing effects are still very annoying.
I then tried a slideshow made directly in iDVD. The quality is merely acceptable, still not professional. The images are so compressed that they loose their details, and the edges of the frames and every straight line in the images flicker...
Compressing an original 5 Gb slideshow made of JPEG files to 1,5 Gb seems an enormous rate of compression. Is this the way it is with those programs, or have I missed some settings somewhere? Is there no way to preserve the initial image size when passed to DVD? Alternatively, would the pro version DVD Studio Pro have more flexibillity? It's there on my computer, but the interface is turning me away! ...
    Thanks again for any hints!

  • MSI Big Bang-XPower II More MB RAM than the CPU can handle...

I understand reading in a few forum post :" By making more memory available to the system more data can be cached in RAM, so there will be less hard drive activity, and less swapping to memory so your system will perform better." But what happen when motherboard for a desktop that supports( and had install) more RAM than the processor can handle?(aka:processor Max Memory Size).
Please comment in this configuration.as I 'm looking for a MB than offer me the more SATA6 connection i found a few available using LGA2011 socket (MSI Big Bang-XPower II LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6GB/s USB 3.0 XL ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS) than support 128GB. As I understand the processor Intel® Core™ i7-3930K Processor only work with 64GB.
Is there any advantage to have a MB that hold a bigger RAM capacity than the CPU? If so, how can this be translate using in a program like Adobe After Effects, RAM preview? thank

More Memory doe's not make it faster as its Volatile Memory (more RAM but it has to be run at much slower speeds) that is very short term and is just a buffer for active Programs and files it Caches there while its active but in no way improves system speed (as it has to be clocked slower to allow the IMC on the CPU to cope with it)! more memory just allows more Active Large programs and files open at the same time and huge amount of ram will only really be of benefit for things like Video Editing, photo editing and 3D rendering as those take alot of ram to allow all the computations that the CPU does to be held for quick access but only when they are active!
having more RAM then your CPU can Handel is a VERY BAD IDEA as it will just refuse to even post or in very rare cases damage the CPU's IMC leading to a dead CPU!
why MSI have done that is for possible later 2011 CPU's that may allow the 128GB of RAM limit to be used but currently they do not exist currently as X79 is a more professional grade Platform that will probably be around for years to come (may be used for many upgrade cycles and may eventually have a cpu that can use 128GB or ram) and who knows what will happen with Intel CPU's in that time frame! (more of a possible forward compatibility thing as its a very high end platform)
as for after effects it uses RAM for  holding Render Files so in theory more ram will just allow it to render Larger files that are more complex without hitting the Available Ram ceiling that your computer has but it will not render any faster as a result it just gives it more headroom to work in!
so overall more ram = more Active space available & no increase in speed (actually maybe a drop in speed as it needs to run slower causing LAG/Latency) so it all depends what is important to you here to whether more ram is of any benefit or just a hindrance but that is down to your own use case scenario!

  • Mail seems to be inadequate?

Hello folks and happy new year.
I'm a long-time Eudora user. Suddenly I discover something I need that Eudora can't do so I wondered if it's time to switch to Mail. But, on even a superficial examination, Mail appears to be way short of a professional standard. Just one example — Apple calls Mail's "search" feature powerful but, to me, it seems pathetically-weak.
As far as the Mac is concerned, Eudora is almost dead. Sooner or later, an OS update will break it so that's another reason I've been thinking of this issue off and on.
But I worry that there really is nothing out there ready to take over from Eudora, which has served me wonderfully for years, with my multiple email accounts and huge numbers of filters and mailboxes.
MailForge and MailSmith receive poor reviews and, anyway, freeware or shareware isn't what I'm looking for. I'm happy to pay for a stable, professional, fully-featured application. But...is there such a thing in the email-for-Mac universe? Funny how Mac users are well-served in many fields but email is one area where offerings are poor or, in some other areas I'm concerned about, non-existant altogether. (A professional-grade usenet client is another thing I've never been able to find. Thoth ***** but it's the best there is.)
(And, for those interested, what can't Eudora do that I wanted to do? Send in cyrillic. It can receive cyrillic ok but their web site admits that it can't send. Strange.)
    Can anyone point me please?

Sorry, that was just one example - I managed to find those emails via alternate methods. Too often I'd like to do a more sophisticated search than mail seems to support. For example, when you don't know how something is spelled but you know part of the word or you are searching for, or looking for a phrase but not sure of the tense or plurals.
The question remains how to do an advanced search or even simple loose pattern matching.
Mail continues to fall very short of Eudora (except that it doesn't crash and does display html emails). How about just being able to see more than one mailbox at a time? Or multiple search results at one time. How about the ability to label emails? I really miss Eudora's simple option-click to quickly gather emails based on any mailbox field. I really miss Eudora's ability to reply to more than one email in a single response. And, I sorely miss Eudora's ability to re-title and even edit existing emails.
...and it appears I'm not alone.

  • How can I set up a back up hard drive on airport extreme

I have an external harddrive that was plugged into my airport extreme. Apple seemed to eliminate my abilty to back up wirelessly in one of the updates. How can I set this up again? Does anyone know a way around this?
    Thanks,

Ah, I remember those links now.  I was thinking something along the lines of:
Never consider any computer a data storage device, rather a data creation ,sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake.
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time even under ideal conditions.
Store important data on multiple servers on multiple continents.
Burn important data onto multiple copies of archival DVDs and store same in cool dark fireproof safes, multiple places.
Don’t burn data onto junk DVD’s purchased from consumer level electronics stores. These are not archival long life DVD’s nor reliable, nor trustworthy. Archival DVD blanks such as Taiyo Yuden, rated for 100+ years are what the pros use, these are made by JVC and are professional grade DVD blanks.
Most people have never heard of archival DVDs, however their cost is only 30% more than junk-level DVD blanks which are only rated for 5-10 years. Also the reject rate on the inferior DVD is around 15%, the cost is almost identical between the WORST DVD blanks and the BEST DVD blanks.
Most importantly know that 2 copies of your data is 1, and 1 is none, and 1000 copies stored in one place or building, is also the same as none due to possible fire.
Always consider and expect your computer’s hard drive to completely crash anytime, at all times, and you should keep a cloned and updated hard drive handy at all times to return to immediate productivity and utterly avoid programs and parameter reinstallation.  Nothing is quicker than taking out a dead HD and tossing in a new updated cloned HD for getting back to 100% in under 20 mins!
    Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.)
(something I coined an age ago)
    Backing up data to:
    Multiple HD in multiple locations
On multiple servers on multiple continents, private and public websites, anonymous data farms. (very easy actually)
Burned onto archival optical and magnetic storage
Have unclassified data possessed by multiple people in multiples places.
When your data becomes both everywhere and nowhere, accessible to all, destructible by none, cannot be collected together or permanently retrieved under any circumstances, you have Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.) protection rivaling that of large governments.

  • In the name of hearing loss and equal access, there needs to be a balance control for people who have decreased hearing in one ear only. It is STILL not available in itunes YET, despite MUCH clamor. WE NEED BALANCE/Pan/L-R control!

OK, there's been complaining about this for YEARS, and now I have a relative who has extreme hearing loss in one ear (not deaf) and usually compensates by turning up the balance on her speakers/ipod to the left or right side in order to compensate.
Also, as a musician and a guitar teacher, I make teaching audio tracks that have a particular part on the left or the right side only, and which needs to be "muted" by panning to the opposite side, then the student can play to the backing track without that part. Of course, then they can adjust the balance back and check themselves. This is also done with a LOT of jazz teaching exercises, etc...
Apple-PLEASE give us an elegant, easy to get to way of adjusting balance WITHIN ITUNES. Most of us us professional grade equipment and sound interfaces, and care deeply about the quality of sounds we make. we do NOT want to have to keep going into Prefs in order to adjust balance, and a LOT of high end sound interfaces don't allow that anyways anymore.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix this Apple. It should be easy, it should be done in the name of compassion for those with one sided hearing loss  if for no other reason, but I've outlined other reasons to do it as well.
AND I'll repeat this for the people who won't read what I wrote---WE DO NOT NEED TO BE TOLD TO "ADJUST IT UNDER PREFERENCES"---that defeats the point of having a simple solution, and it certainly won't work on an ipod.
HELP! You guys can fix this IMMEDIATELY if you will just DO IT! I cannot stress how important it is to the music community as a whole...
Why has this not been done before now? Even the cheapest, sorryest stereo receivers, players, etc., in the world have ALWAYS had a "balance" control along with a "bass" and "treble" even at their simplist. Its PAST time for iTunes to become something better. WAY PAST.
AND AGAIN---DOING IT THROUGH PREFERENCES IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR THOSE OF US USING "REAL" INTERFACES or playing on a iPod, etc...

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Sony HDR-HC5

Hello, my name is Marc Bostian.
I'm a new Final Cut user, have shot some video on my HD Video on my Sony HDR-HC5. I have hooked it up with a FireWire 800 cable. to my Dual 2.3 G5 tower. I am able to control the camera in the Capture windows, but I'am not able to see the video on screen or capture anything.
I'm using an Easy Setup of HDV - 1081i60 FireWire Basic.
I have several full tape I need to transfer over and get started learning how to edit. I'm hoping I have something set wrong.. ??
    thanks
    Marc

Welcome to the club' .. I have been on Final Cut since #1, which is about 9 years I believe. And for me, I sometimes feel I have just scratched the surface'. But Final Cut is professional grade software, with so many different possible ways to do things. Unfortunately it has never been just plug & play, at least for me. I can't even remember how many hours I have sat & scratched my head wondering what was wrong, and it would turn out to be something simple I overlooked because I didn't take the time to learn the fundamental's .. I was always to anxious to make a project, and just dive in .. really wasting a lot of time stumbling along by experimentation.
I will say this though, these forums are a life saver, especially the FCpro. forum, for me anyway. A couple weeks ago I didn't have a clue why all of a sudden I couldn't capture HDV. anymore when it has been working fine for close to three years .. Even the certified Apple tech's where I have purchased all my computers couldn't, or probably wouldn't tell me what was up .. but I have the feeling they new about the conflicting issues with earlier software and the new Intel processor's .. After all they are in business to sell computers, not teach. They suggested I call Apple, or search
these forums. There a lot of very helpful & knowledgeable folks here .. and usually most problems get solved .. for better or worse. Lots of Luck ...

  • Setup Lion Server for use in Small Office of Windows & Mac Clients

I've purchased a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server installed to be used in my small office of less than 10 people.
The primary goal of this server is to used for File Sharing, bother locally, and remotely.
In the process of setting up Lion Server I have come across a couple things that I am confused about.
    The first is Open Directory.
It is my understanding that this is not a necessary setup for the number of users in my office, however I set it up anyway as it appeared to be something that would be useful in the future.
I have come across information that states Lion Server will not be accessible for Windows users connected via Open Directory. Thus my inclination is to disable the service, and set up my users as local users.
My question is, for local and remote File Sharing, is there any benefit to using Open Directory?
The second has to do with Remote Access.
I am familiar with the notion of a VPN, but I need some clarification as to my remote access options.
When I go to setup my Server's hostname, I am presented with three options. 1) Host name for local network, 2) Host name for private network, and 3) Host name for Internet.
I have a domain name for my company's website, so I set up a subdomain (server.mycompany.com), asked my ISP for a Static WAN IP, and pointed thesubdomain to said IP using my DNS. Thus this appears to be option number 3; to allow users to connect to my server from the local network, as well as the Internet.
My question is, how does this differ from a VPN both in setup, as well as method with which users will access the server? Is there a benefit to one over the other? I would Google this to find an answer, but I can't seem to find a name for what this setup is called.
I very much appreciate any help you can provide.
    Thanks.

Well, I spoke too soon.  Lion Server is unstable, awkward and is far too limited to qualify as an Apple product. Even though there's quite a few enhancements, the omissions of technologies in the server 10.6 edition makes this "server" a no go for us.
Even after installing mysql, I still cannot run a Joomla website on Lion server as it should be done. The wiki's a nice thing to have, but isn't a "professional grade" solution.  There's too much iOS as well.
With that said, I think it's a shame that apple would put customers through so much frustration and disappointment by releasing such a lame product. In order for us to use Lion server, we would have to be able to run a second (totally separate) instance of Apache. It also appears that server settings are changing to the extent that services become inaccessible as the system is running.
