Juice spilled all over keyboard 2 weeks ago

hello,
my friend spilled juice all over her 8 month old powerbookG4 15" about 4 weeks ago. She sent it to the computer repair shop and they sent it to Apple to repair, and the repair price tag was about $1350! So she said forget it, she'll just get a new one, the latest and greatest. SO now she gave me this sticky powerbook to fix and I'm wondering where I should start.
The keyboard is not functional, a few of the keys on the periphery work, but not really because they don't correspond to what is on the actual key (i.e. pressing the "shift" key shows the number "9"...it doesn't make any sense, and most of the keys don't do anything. It looks like someone started playing with it because the delete key doesn't bounce anymore and it is depressed a few millimeters below the rest of the keys.
I attached another keyboard to it and it works fine otherwise. The mouse pad and mouse button on the keyboard actually work, the button is just a little sticky on one side.
Should I take it all apart and use rubbing alchol to clean the keyboard? Do you think it is worth it, if it works with a peripheral keyboard? What if I damage the motherboard or anything else? Then the whole thing is a goner. Is it easy to take apart?
Should I run some other tests to check the health of this doused computer?
thank you...........

If it works fine except for the keyboard, IMO, you probably have a nice deal there. Forget about saving the keyboard. Just buy a new assembly (about $130), and save the old keycaps and scissors under each key to sell on ebay. They're worth $8 each. Follow the directions on ifixit.com for replacing the keyboard. It's not easy, but not too hard. While it's open, clean any other dried juice out with plain water, disassembling parts as needed. Believe it or not, most circuit boards are cleaned with water during assembly, then baked. Some parts are added afterwards and should be kept dry - if you don't know, keep it dry. Check the optical drive. Replacements are about $150. Sugar is death to electrical circuits - it corrodes them rapidly.
The reason these keyboards aren't easy to repair is that the electrical contacts under each key are inside a plastic sheet sandwich which is semi-sealed. Fluid enters the sandwich and is almost impossible to get out, let alone wash clean and get dry again.

  • Cannot add printers to wifi network; all worked fine two weeks ago...

I have two Canon printers (MG5420/MP620B) which will not work with my macbook pro, home wifi network.  These worked on Yosemite, until the week when the last OS and Canon driver updates were pushed out.
I have deleted the printers, followed other's advice on removing printer associated Library items, reinstalled all drivers and printer software, connect to laptop via USB to re-setup, powered off the printer, pulled the usb, powered on the printer, and so on.
The result is that in the Add printer window, nothing happens.  No printer shows up, even if the previous dialogue boxes indicate success.  Then after closing out the ADD printer (default/IP/etc) and I restart the laptop, the laptop screen changes to black with just the arrow cursor remaining...and there it hangs until I do a "hold power button" until it forces quit.
I have NEVER been so disappointed with apple.  I am having flashbacks to installing items on my old windows machines, when every new things prompted a slew of fixes.

The problem has "magically" corrected itself.  Perhaps it was the three consecutive Canon ink jet updates pushed out in the past five days...

  • Apple tried to help w/iPad crashes, but it's starting all over again.

I have done multiple resets, wipes, virtually everything suggested for the Safari crashes on this forum. No joy. Getting to a genius bar is physically difficult for me, so I finally contacted Apple via email and to their credit, they called me in less than 24 hours. After sharing my own rants with the first person I spoke with about the problems with ios 5, I was transferred to tech support. The tech person walked me through what I had experienced so far, and his first response was that we needed to determine if I was having a hardware or a software problem. He suggested that there might be a problem with the the original upgrade download file, so he walked me through deleting the "ipsw" file from the Library on my MacBook Pro. I did a complete wipe of my iPad 1, created a new iTunes library on my MacBook, re-downloaded the 5.0.1 update file and set up my iPad as a new iPad. I then tried things out with only the native apps installed, and used Safari for a couple of hours and everything seemed fine. I re-downloaded apps directly from the App store - I did not copy any apps from the old iTunes folder, just in case there were corrupted apps. This all happened almost 2 weeks ago and for awhile everything seemed fine. Then the crashes started up again, and have been accelerating in frequency over the past 3 days. This morning I've had two Safari crashes in one hour with nothing running in the task bar and only two tabs open in Safari. Other crashes have occurred when using the App store, email, and other functions, so it's not just Safari that's crashing. The main point that came out of all this is that IT'S NOT MY IPAD THAT'S THE PROBLEM, which tech support agreed with. I hope this info helps someone else at least determine if their iPad is functioning properly. I did finally turn on the Debug console in Safari and found out that Facebook plugins to different websites create many Safari errors. If anyone else has had experience with replacing the "ipsw" file and then doing a clean restore of their iPad, I'd like know how it worked/did not work for you.

I agree completely. I posted my experience in hopes of saving someone else a trip to the genius bar, and also to see if others had tried or been told to try this. I've read a lot of posts about wiping and restoring but no discussion about the original ipsw file download (sorry if I missed it elsewhere). It was clear from my discussions with Customer Service and Tech Support that Apple DOES read these discussions, so that was another factor in my posting. I did call the tech guy and leave him a message as to the latest developments -as per his request - but haven't heard back from him yet. During our original conversation he stated that he hasn't had any crashes on his iPad - good for him, but what does that mean for the rest of us? I pointed out to both reps that I've never seen it take so long to get a serious bug fix out of Apple.....all the stuff others are saying, with no really reassuring response from them that a fix is imminent. I hope each and every person experiencing this calls and calls Apple until something finally happens! The guys I dealt with were very nice, but I still have the same problems!! AND, I'm curious as to why things work o.k. for awhile after the restores, but then the crashes suddenly accelerate - this is my 4th try with the same results.

  • Spilled tropicana juice all over my keyboard

I just spilt juice all over my keyboard but the computer is working fine except the keyboard keys are now sticky and making it hard to type. But the software and everything works the same as it usually does. How much would it cost to replace just the keyboard if everything else is alright?

You need to contact Apple for appt and pricing
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • I bouhght my computer a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repaid the damage , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop.

i bouhght my Macbook pro retina display 13 Inch i5  a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repair the damage in apple store , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop. Some places are asking to pay 620 Pounds.

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

  • On my iPad mini, my inbox number count is over 500 even though the inbox. Is empty. All accounts do this on my iPad but all my other device are fine. Problem showed up two weeks ago???

On my iPad mini, my inbox number count is over 500 even though the inbox. Is empty. All accounts do this on my iPad but all my other device are fine. Problem showed up two weeks ago???

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the Mail app on your iPad mini is showing that you have over 500 unread email messages, but your inbox is actually empty.
There are several steps I'd use to troubleshoot this situation.
First, restart your iPad to see if it clears up the symtom:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
If this doesn't correct the behavior, try removing and re-adding the affected email accounts next:
Get help with Mail on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Tap the affected email account.
    Tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
If the same thing happens after re-adding the account, you may need to use the steps below to reinstall iOS. You may want to back up your iPad to iTunes before completing this step.
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
    From:
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
    All the best,

  • Drink spilled on MacBook Pro about 7 week ago. Help...

    Hi everyone,
My friend accidentally spilled a bit of drink on my mbp 13" about 7 weeks ago. We cleaned it up as much as we could, turned it upside down but we didn't switch it off. However a few weeks ago I noticed a few of the top of the keyboards were stiff but worked. I booked a Genius bar appointment just to check it out, just to face a nightmare that the cost is more than getting a new one. I'm just about to start uni and don't have that kind of money. It works perfectly fine besides the few stiff keyboards and it's just over a year old. My questions are do I go on using it since it's still been working since it happened? Or do I go broke trying to replace it? And how long can be estimated before it stops working? Your help would be really appreciated and sorry for lots of questions, Im panicked ...
    Mify

Without knowing whether the drink has seeped onto the motherboard, it's impossible to know whether the damage will be limited to the keyboard. You can have the keyboard replaced. But once the drink gets to the motherboard it is a disaster waiting to happen. It could be tomorrow, next month, or next year. And, it could be never.

  • Ive uninstalled and re-installed over and over, firefox crashed like a week ago, everytime i try and open it, it wont it puts up the crash box again and again. why? pleez can you help my firefox will not load.

everytime i try and open firefox it crashes i click to restart it and send report but its the same thing over and over nuthin changes, i used firefox up till like week ago now it will open period.

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

  • The airplay icon has disappeared from my desk top. It was there two weeks ago, so I can't watch movies I've downloaded from iTunes and flick them over to my TV.

The airplay icon has disappeared from my MAC desktop. It was there two weeks ago when I successfully used it to 'flick a movie i had purchased from iTunes over to my tv. Also, if I rent the movie through iTunes, why (because of the above issue) when I go to 'Purchased' it doesn't display as an option when actually using Apple TV, it doesn't display but when I go to rent it again a message comes up saying "you have already rented this movie, do you want to rent it again"? Frustrated!!

Ok Fellas, let me give you a clue:  Games, particularly those that make heavy use of graphics and sound are notoriously power hungry.  In fact, when I was in the Navy many years ago, the folks working on the NTDS (Navy Tactical Data System)  computers used a version of Space Invaders to load test the AN/UYK-43 computers.
I have also noticed that all of my laptops (I have a brand new Toshiba dual core, an older Toshiba single core, plus 2 Dell dual core machines) have significantly shorter battery life when I play Company of Heroes than when I am just reading e-mail or surfing the 'Net.  I have also noticed the same behavior when I play games on my 4th gen Touch and my iPhone 4.
The fact is, iOS 5 did make some major improvements as well as adding some nice functionality like iMessage, wireless synch, and such, but the down side is that depending on how you use the device battery life can be shorter that what you may have experienced with pervious versions of iOS.  Its just the nature of the beast...
We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.....
    Oh John....  Oh Marsha.....

  • Two weeks ago fine, now all playback is Jittery

I have been all over the forums reading posts about others with what sounds like the same problem. So far, I've got no fix for mine.
Footage IN PLAYBACK ONLY in FCPX 10.1.1 is jittery, it's like somebodies trying to make a rap album both video and audio jitter thoughout play, though audio is 'less' affected.
Two weeks ago I did not have this problem.
All my old projects are equally effected.
Files ingested for new project are same as all other projects.

Media: Proxy media, optimized media. All rendered. Does not matter which I choose.
    Quality: Better Performance.
Does not matter if background rendering is going or has finished.
    I've deleted perferences. No fix.
Last ditch effort is to reinstall FCP see if that fixes it.
Any help, much appreciated. Major deadline coming up. And while I could probably work with it (render files out of it are perfectly fine, media files ingested into it playback fine) it's quite a nuisance to do any fine tune editing.
    Thanks.

    FOLLOW UP:
Reinstall did nothing to change it. And I've also noticed a couple of other weird anomalies with FCPX, see below
    To Russ:
Did all those and no change. Tried all sorts of variations of the display settings, no change.
Things I also did where to complete close out, open up a clean copy, create an entirely new library for just the ingest.  Had some issues with the CREATE button as it seemed to create the library and then froze on the screen and wouldn't go away, if I clicked create again it said there was one already named that if I tried to hit cancel nothing happens. Finally had to quit, restart.
    No change.
Russ. I have absolutely NO other issues with video in any other programs I use. It's hard to believe it's the video card BUT to rule that out, is there a way I can get a definitive answer to the card being good or bad?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Spilled water over the keyboard of my MacBook Pro.

Spilled water over the keyboard of my MacBook Pro. 13 inches. Used paper and dried it straigt away, it was working fine. Now, a few days later, my left shift-button, the ctrl-button and right-arrow button do not work. What can I do to try to fix this?
My Mac is working completely fine. It was maybe 0,5 dl of water...

Nothing that you can do to fix it. Best to just leave it off and take it to your local Apple Store or AASP. No telling how much it's going to cost you - there are liquid sensors all around your computer so the service centers will be able to tell that it's a case of liquid damage, even if there is no corrosion yet.
You just have to be careful with any kind of liquids around notebooks - liquids and electricity just don't play well together.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

  • I just spilled Apple juice on my white keyboard (iMac)

I just spilled Apple juice on my white keyboard that came with my Imac. I have removed all the water and excess water both on top and under some of the keys, however some of the buttons dont work like the 'a' button and the command button. My question is does the AppleCare Protection plan cover the damage or at least replace me with a new keyboard, or am i just in for a bad luck

Here's the full monty. No idea if this will be successful, but it's what I'd try if it happened to me.
You have nothing to lose. Get a gallon of distilled water. Pour enough into a clean shallow pan and soak and agitate the keyboard. Make sure the keyboard is covered in water. Do this until you have no more water left. Allow the water to drain after each soaking. Once it is drained, swish it in a bath of 70% isopropyl alcohol for 15 minutes, let it drain, then replace with new alcohol and swish for several more minutes. This will help displace the water and may help remove any traces of the wine. Then let it dry out for a number of days. Do not try to use it until you are reasonably certain it is completely dry. Letting it sit in a container of rice, which will act as a dessicant, may also help the drying.
