Jumbled Logic Files on External Hard Drive
Hi all,
I have been very nervous to record to my external hard drive lately, because I will do a project, save all the tracks and the project file to my external drive, and occasionally when I go back to re-open the project, there is a different sound clip where another clip was supposed to be.
Even stranger, when I go to my external drive and browse the files, I can pinpoint the file that has changed, and when I single-click on the file, the name suddenly changes to a different file when it becomes highlighted! If I start clicking around on the files in the finder they just get all jumbled up.
I know that all the files are still there, but it seems to be confusing what or where they are.
Even stranger yet, this happened to me on both a PowerMac G4 and a new MacBook AND it happened on TWO different external drives!
The drives were a Maxtor 7200rpm 80gig drive and a newer Western Digital MyBook 250 Gig drive. I thought the new HD would surely solve the problem, but it still happens with some projects!
Has anyone ever heard of this or anything like it? I have been recording to the internal drive lately out of fear of mixing up files!

Did you check the drives with Disk Utility and make sure they are formatted as Mac OS (extended)? Do you receive any odd messages when you run the utility?
Also, if you have Disk Warrior, run it. There may be some VIB/directory issues, although it seems unlikely that that it would happen on two different drives.
Have you added any 3rd. party utilities, hacks, or other gadgets around the time the problems started?

HT4833 logic files on external hard drive and kernel panic
I was using 2 external HDs via the Sonnet sata pro express34 card in MaBookPro. One ext. HD had only Logic project files, the other had plugins. Logic 9.I.7 installed on the MBP i7 late 2010 (OS 10.6.8), with Motu 828 audio interface via FW400. All this worked for a number of projects (simple stereo masters). Then Kernel panic damaging one ext HD with plugins. Then with just the other extHD connected, problems began. Trying to bounce a song, it stopped and froze, kernel panic with damage to the ext HD.
Seemed Logic could no longer work with the files on the ext HD. Don't know if this began before or after the HD was damaged.
First HD couldn't mount so turned off journaling, mounted and enabled journaling again. Have been backing up all on that HD via FW800, then will erase and format it.
Second HD had

Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume ONETB could not be repaired..."
I backed up the files, erased and reformatted it. Waiting to try the setup again until the problem is figured out.
1) I see there is also a Logic folder on the MBP with 3 projects in it. Did this confuse the program to have this on the internal drive plus a Logic folder with projects on the external drive?
Can I set up the program so all projects always stay on the external drive, instead of a default which created these early projects on the MBP drive?
2) Is this not the problem and the whole thing is a problem with the express/34 card esata drivers/kext files, or 32 bit vs 64 bit, or ...?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.
Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

After trying to change permissions on my computer so others on my network can grab files, my external Hard Drive has a lock on it and I can't access files. I've tried repairing permissions, logging in under another Administrator account, using Terminal to fix the problem, downloaded BatChmod but nothing works… Any other suggestions? I have an Imac running OS10.6.8.

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

I m able to copy and paste selected files from external hard drive to my mac but not the other way around. Im not able to copy files from Mac to external hard drive.
The same is working fine with USB flash memory.

Don't use NTFS, remove your data off it first and change the format to something the Mac and PC can read, but doens't cost money or require software.

New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes. When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists. Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.

From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive. I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu.You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library.The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip: To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

Encrypting files on external hard drive
I am wondering how to encrypt file on external hard drive. Is it best to use the disk image system?
Also, can I make disk images flexible, so that I may keep adding files to it in the future? Ideally there are a few GBs of info I would like to store this way, but will add more later.

Use a sparse image. You can set a large size, but it will only take up the space that you store in the image. You can keep adding until you hit the max size you set or run out of disk space. There are ways to resize the disk image, also.

Paging file on External Hard Drive?

I seem to have read something on this, but can't relocate the post I thought I saw it on. Most posts talk about the Paging File and External Hard Drives as two different instances. I am always learning something new so am asking if you guys are doing this, or did I misread something.
Is is possible to have a Paging (Virtual Memory?) file on the same External hard drive as where Scratch Discs are saved? (Or could be a separate Internal drive where Scratch Discs are located). PrE PDF user guide talks about even several different drives, where different parts of each project are stored, way too complex for the basic user like me. A separate Paging file for each hard drive? Just asking.
If you guys are doing this what are the benefits, and is there a procedure for doing it? I am not talking about the OS Paging File because I think I already understand that. But extra, additional paging files depending on how many hard drives a person would have or wants to use. Sounds wacky.

Bill, if I am understanding correctly you are talking about having only One paging file spanning drives. I was asking about leaving the Windows Managed Paging (Virtual Memory?) File on C Drive and an additional Paging File on an extra drive. Again maybe I read wrong in the various forums.
I do have 3 eSATA external drives which I use for storing various family movies. I may buy a 2 TB internal later, but this is what I have now. My desktop is an i7 2.8ghz wiith 12 GB RAM, 64 bit Windows 7, 1 TB Hard Drives RAID 1? (MIrror Image). I have a huge paging file. I haven't been using an external drive for my Scratch Discs, but was going to set one up to do that, so thus my reasoning for asking about a separate paging file.
The eSATA connection is really quick, so it seems I will have no problem there. But the problem as I understand it, is all Premiere Elements versions (I have PrE7 & PrE9) up to PrE10 are 32 bit and are going to only use a few GB of System Ram before (or along with) using the Paging File. So if there were additional Paging Files, maybe it would be less CPU intensive. I don't know if Bill measured CPU usage in his tests, with and without the extra paging file. Not talking about speed necessrily but CPU usage.
I do Defragment quite a bit even though it says 0% defragmented, and expecially after I have moved a bunch of files around. For each Project I keep everything in one folder, even exports, so that if I want to delete a project but keep the AVI, I don't have to look all over the computer to delete various parts of the project. I may change some of that procedure later, but works for now. My Scratch Discs are Same as Project, thanks.
Thanks for one TIP I believe Bill gave in another Post was to not store Projects? or video? on the Desktop, because it may have different characteristics (video editing problems?) than other storage folders. I thought that was interesting because I think people get used to putting stuff on the Desktop because it's easier than going to other folders. So now I just have Desktop Shortcuts to the folders I use all the time.

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like. It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive. Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it. After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups. One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave. -
Transfer old mac files from external hard drive back onto my mac
I just had my logic board replaced by Apple, out of warranty, on my 2008 Macbook pro. As advised by Apple, I had another computer store copy my entire hard drive onto an external drive as a backup. The guy at the other computer store wiped the hard drive on my computer and I sent it away for the repair.
I have my laptop back but for the life of me can't figure out how to copy my external hard drive back onto my macbook. Please help??!! I have already been without my computer for the 10 days it took Apple to do the repair and need to get my work done. The guy at the computer store said he made an exact copy of my hard drive. He also said that since my external hard drive was a little older (never used but purchased a few years ago) it might take a few hours to copy because it took him a few hours to get the files off my mac. Thanks to anyone who can help!Why don't you attach the HDD with your data on it to your MBP and then drag and drop your folders to your restored MBP.

When you say that he made an exact copy of your MBP HDD, is it a clone with the OS on it? If so you can use Disk Utility>Restore to copy the information to your MBP.

How To Fade In a JPG or GIF Image using Inspector Build-In or Action
