Jump to Macbook Pro?

Hey All,
So I've been using Windows laptops thus far- a Compaq and a Sony laptop. And I have used Win XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. It's time for an upgrade, and I'm thinking of going headfirst into the Mac family, with the Macbook Pro 15 inch retina. This is not my first Apple product however. I have had a 2nd gen iPod, a 3rd gen Retina iPad, and now a 5th gen iPod. Thus far, I am hugely impressed with all Apple products, hence the inclination to go for a Macbook pro.
My main intention of going for a MBP 15 inch is for software development purposes. I'm a computer science major and I find developing on the windows platform to be really crappy and buggy. Other than this, I need a good enough screen(hence the 15 inch retina) for stuff like HD movies on netflix, and some basic photo editing things. I am not at all a gamer.
The Macbook pro I have in mind has the below configurations-
2.6 GHz quadcore Intel i7 with turbo boost upto 3.8GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
512GB PCLe Flash Storage(SSD)
Intel Iris Pro Graphics with Nvidia GeForce GT750M(2GB)
I wanted to go for a 1TB Flash storage, but that's way out of my budget.
The other laptop I have in mind is the Lenovo Y510p with pretty much similar configurations, and an addition of 1TB rpm memory and 24GB SSD. The 1TB of memory in the Lenevo is what makes me hesitant. But then again, this Lenovo is basically a gaming laptop, and not a professional software development one.
I also heard that the MBP 15 Retina does not have an optical DVD Drive. I am a skeptical about it, but I have an external (Toshiba) USB disk drive, so that should work fine when I would need a disk drive, if I go for the Mac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!!

PCs such as the Lenovo can't legally run Mac OS X.  Thus if your development involves Mac OS X applications, having a Mac handy to test your applications is a good idea.  If a new MacBook Pro is out of your realm of affordability, MacBook Airs are cheaper, and older MacBook Pros and MacBooks could also be helpful.  The one major difference is the age may make a difference what Mac operating system you can test with.
Macs in general can only run the operating system they came with and newer Mac OS X versions up to the limit of their hardware.  Both Mac OS X 10.8 and 10.9 have the same hardware limits:
http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
http://www.everymac.com/ will help you identify what older models meet that requirement.
Macs also may have specific GPU (graphics chips) that if you are developing for you might have to watch out for in the notebook models.  Generally speaking, the GPU architecture for the Pros allows for hardware GPU, where Air and non-Air non-Pro have mostly swapspace for GPU calls in addition to the calls for their GPU.
Since 2006, Macs have been able to legally run almost any version of Windows:

This is supposed to happen, licensing issue mean that Apple can't AirPlay protected content to other devices. You might try VLC instead of Apples built in DVD player.

  • How do you get a jump drive to work on MacBook pro?

I have a new MacBook pro and I am trying to access work from a jump drive and my computer is not recognizing the drive. Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or how to fix it? Thanks!

Have you tried the other USB port? Do you have any other USB drive to connect to see if the port is not working? When the jump drive is connected open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Is the drive listed in the DU sidebar?

If you have a fairly new Mac...

  • 2011 MacBook Pro Trackpad jumping around

Ever since last night the trackpad on my mid-2011 15" MacBook Pro hasn't been working. The cursor keeps jumping all over the place and I can't really get the trackpad to respond to my touches. I can eventually get it where I need it to move but it takes a lot of effort.
I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM but that doesn't really do anything. It helped once at first but quickly went back.
Any other suggestions as to what the problem is?

I think you might be right about the swollen battery. I'm aware of the stuff in the article that Kevin linked to. I know that having wet fingers can lead it to do that and it's not like my hands would have been wet for 24 hours anyway. And I'm using a standard Apple three pronged grounded power adapter, so not a problem with using an aftermarket one.
I'm pretty sure that it is related to either the battery or power somehow though, because after disconnecting it from power and trying to use it for about 45 minutes, the problem went away. Worked pretty normal as I was using it for the rest of the time but the issue came back shortly after re-connecting it to power to charge the battery again.
Unfortunately I can't take it to an Apple Store to have it checked out though because I'm in a remote location for work for the next 3 weeks.

  • Retina MacBook pro video jumping!

    HI all,
I have a Retina MacBook Pro 15", I have had it for about 6 months, I have noticed that the video jumps when playing at full screen.
I booked it in apple store today for the image retention problem and they were fantastic changed my screen same day. I showed the Genius a video taken on my iPhone of the screen jumping and he was baffled, he said he would look into it.
I received my rMBp back tonight with a sparkling new screen but I still have this problem.
i have noticed it does not do it on the "Best for Retina" screen resolution but i run at the scaled "More Space" resolution. as soon as I change to my resolution it jumps change it back and its fine. surely the machine should be designed to handle full screen playback at it supported resolutions shouldn't it?
    Has anybody had this problem?
Has anybody dealt with Apple over this problem?
Here is a video of the jumping

  • Retina Macbook Pro randomly jumps to logon screen without warning

My Retina Macbook Pro randomly jumps to the logon screen while I am using it. When I log back in some programs have stopped running and any unsaved work has gone. It has happened while I am not typing or touching the keyboard or mouse as well.

I have the exact same problem with my Retina MBP. At first I thought it was occurring when I CMD+Tab-ed between apps but I've had it jump to the login screen without even toughing the computer. Very frustrating. Upon login I have to wait for apps to reload and I lose unsaved changes. Anyone have any advice?

  • Macbook pro 2010...cursor is acting crazy jumping everywhere and responding very slow...thought it was the track pad but I plugged in a mouse and it still does the same thing...is this a virus?..and can someone please help?...

My Macbook pro is acting Crazy....the Cursor just keeps on jumping everywhere and not responding when I use the trackpad....Even when it does respond it is very slow...I thought it was the trackpad acting up but realized it wasnt when i plugged in a mouse and it still did the same thing...this happened one other time and shortly after my computer froze...I had to restart for it to work but restarting dosent help this time...can someone please help?...Is this a Virus?

It is not a virus.  See my Mac Virus Guide*.
As to what it might be, that's hard to say.  You should try some basic troubleshooting...  Repair the hard drive with disk utility.  Boot in safe mode and see if it happens then, log in to a different user account and see if it happens there, reboot from another system and see if it happens.
Apparently some people have had this kind of problem caused by swelling batteries that push on the underside of the trackpad and cause all kinds of strange problems.  Is your machine's underside deformed at all?

  • Jump from 2.8 Dual Xeon Mac Pro to new 2.4GHz Macbook Pro with LED Cinema?

So about a month ago I decided to upgrade an older Macbook Pro to my dream computer... I bought the Octo 2.8GHz Xeon Mac Pro, added 1.6TB of drive space, 10GB of RAM, the Nvidia 8800 GT, and a 23" Apple Cinema Display.
I LOVE the machine. That said...
Stopped over at Apple the other day and saw the new Macbook Pro connected to the 24" LED Cinema Display. GORGEOUS. Love it. Long story short, I am considering moving back to the Macbook Pro and new ACD to go with it.
So my question is this : What kind of performance drop am I going to take if I do this? Are people really using these new MBPs as full desktop replacements? Has anyone jumped from Mac Pro to new MBP and been 100% happy?
I have found with my Mac Pro that I am NEVER stressing the machine, ever. No matter what size file I am working with, no matter what game I am playing, the thing is always fast and smooth. But while playing with the MBP (it was 2.4GHz) and new LED ACD at the Apple Store I noticed that things like Photoshop and Illustrator launched every bit as fast as on my Mac Pro - even Aperture was speedy and extremely usable! I think the dock magnification seemed a touch jerky when compared to my Mac Pro - but maybe not... can't find any real stats on it.
I normally work in Aperture and Photoshop/Illustrator, have iTunes running, iCal, Pages and Numbers, Keynote, Mail, and do just a touch of video compression every now and then (format conversion). I realize these tasks don't pose any challenges to the Mac Pro - but what about the newer MBP?
I would be ordering the MBP with 2.4GHz, upgrading the RAM to 4GB, and the HDD to a 320GB 7200RPM Seagate.
My main motivation is to be able to continue to work on the Cinema Display that I have grown to LOVE, while also becoming a bit mobile again! It IS nice to sit on the couch sometimes and web browse. It wouldn't be worth it to me to gain mobility and lose all the power though, so...
How about it? Given what I do, is the 2.4GHz MBP a suitable replacement for the Mac Pro that I have?

Thanks for reading through the small book I wrote there and adding some info to it - greatly appreciated.
I have found on the Mac Pro I am simply astounded by the way games look at 1920x1200 on 'Very High' settings! But... I also have pretty much stopped playing them. Working on the Mac Pro all day, it would be very nice to sit back on the couch if I want to play a game. Granted the PS3 I have just can't compete with the Mac Pro in quality, but it's decent enough for the small bit of games I play and the Blu Ray drive is nice too for movies. So, I'd say I'm ok losing the gaming part of the Mac Pro as the PS3 is sufficient enough and more convenient so I can actually sit back and relax.
I think you're absolutely correct on the rendering. When I work with video, I usually am converting 2-8 minute Quicktime Movies in to Flash Video format using QT Pro. The Mac Pro SCREAMS through this in 1-2 minutes, my older Macbook Pro was about 5-7 mins for the same file.
Looking back, my MBP wasn't as old as I thought (I had an iMac in between there I don't care to remember) : it was a 2.4GHz Penryn with 200GB 5400 HDD, and 2GB RAM with 256MB VRAM. So basically, the new MBP and the "old" MBP I had are very close to each other... biggest differences are the new 1066mhz front side bus and Nvidia GPU - other than that, these are identical machines!
I was never very happy working on the MBP full time - but I now know that was due to the screen size. Working on the Cinema is great and selling my current Mac Pro and Cinema and getting the new MBP and Cinema will allow me to work and be mobile, as well as put $1000 back in my pocket.
Might be nuts, but man I'd love to see some comparisons between the Mac Pro and MBP from Bare Feats or Ars. I'm definitely in the minority here - no one using Quickbooks and Photoshop as much as I do "needs" an octocore Mac Pro. But, I've got one and love it. It seems for what I'm doing the decrease in performance might be negligible, if not undetectable entirely (aside from gaming and enconding).

  • Macbook pro early 2011 freezes, slow, weird fan noise + trackpad jumping around

Hi guys, see the Etrecheck report below. My 13' Macbook pro (early 2011) has been very slow for the last few months, the fan makes a weird blowing noise (several fellow students have looked around what the **** that noise was when it started doing it), and recently started freezing when opening iTunes, OpenOffice and even Firefox.
OH AND my trackpad has jumping around without me even touching it.
What do you guys think? What's the problem, what can I do? IF I take it in how much do you think it might cost?

I did as you suggested and it it's definitely not freezing as much, though a little bit still. Thanks though!
Trackpad is also still jumping around, but I figured that might have to be replaced anyways.

  • On my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse, on my Macbook Pro my cursor jumps around and does it's own thing even with a usb mouse

Having trouble with my MacBook Pro and the cursor jumping around and doing it's own thing.  Clicking opening up other folders etc.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps until it's resolved.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article.
    2. Boot in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you reboot as usual, stop here and post your results. If you can't boot in safe mode, do the same. If you booted in safe mode and there was no change, go on to the next step.
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    5. A swollen battery in a MacBook Pro or Air can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced.
    6. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    7. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    8. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    9. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • New Macbook Pro/OSX 10.9.1 cursor jumping - how do I fix?

I purchased a new Macbook Pro Retina with OSX 10.9.1 over the holidays. The cursor keeps jumping. My trackpad is on the 2nd to slowest speed and only has tap to click enabled. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    Hi,
At least i'd like to try to reinstall OSX to the same HDD. It seems to be a software problem that occured after a check-up with DiscHelp (idk the specific term in english because I use the dutch version). While 'repairing' an error, a notification came up that said that it couldn't be repaired and that I had to back-up all of my files and reformat the HDD. Since then, if i try to boot up the system, the screen goes black in about 30 seconds.
The only backup I have is the direct copy I made booting up the MBP while pressing 'T' (while connected to another mac using a thunderbolt cable). So now I have a copy of the whole HDD. I tried to find the hidden ~library but i couldn't find it. In this library there are certain files i need to transfer the profile of my email. So yeah it's still readable, but as an external HDD, unfortunately not as a computer.
I really hope you can help me!
    Rick
