Jumper settings for new hard drive

i'm installing a WD Caviar 120GB ATA-100 drive on my parents' 450mHz G4. The WD intallation drive indicates a need to place a jumper over pins 3 & 4 of the new drive, but need a jumper be used on the Mac's old drive? It's only 6GB in size and is what i'd like to use as the master drive. i believe the jumper on the old drive is over pins 5 & 6. Thanks!
iBook, Power Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The new drive has the proper jumper setting, is in the middle (and correct) ATA cable position, and is recognized and has been formatted by the computer. Unfortunately, when i boot the G4 the blinking globe appears for about ten seconds, and then the "no OS" folder appears for another ten seconds before OS X successfully loads and the computer operates normally, with both drives functioning fine. Almost a success story, but it makes me nervous. Thanks for all the help so far!

  • Jumper Settings for new Hard Disks in RAID

How do i have to jumper new disks which should be added to my RAID. In factory settings they come with the cable select setting. Do i have to set all the jumpers to master or does cable select work too?

I know that setting the drive to slave didn't work when I tried it just for curiosity's sake.
It may vary by drive vendor whether you use 'cable select' or 'master.' My xserve raid's a little busy right now so don't want to pull my drives out to look but I'm think that half my drives are set to 'cable select' (maxtor 250GB drives in my left bank) and the other half (hotachi 500GB drives in the right bank) are set to 'master.'
You'll know pretty quickly if it works or not: when you put the drive carrier into the chassis, the drive carrier's status LED (not the blue activity light but the tri-color LED adjacent to it) red light will either turn to green or not. If it turns green, the system has recognized the drive as a valid candidate, if the LED remains red it has determined the drive is not.
You can also click on the individual drive in RAID Admin to determine individual drive status.
FYI, I use RAID Admin 1.5 w/1.5 firmware, have SFP controllers, dual 512k cache, dual cache batteries

  • How do you set Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) for new Hard Drive?

I have a new hard drive that I'm about to have installed into my iMac. The drive is a WD1001FALS (Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB). The only concern I have is that by all accounts it is a bit louder than some other drives, although everything being relative I don't know what that means to me since I've not heard it run yet.
Still, the 320GB drive currently in the iMac is absolutely inaudible and while I'll make some concessions for speed and size I'd like to minimize the amount of noise coming out of the box. I know that the drive supports Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM), however its default state is "disabled". Is there a way, either through the OS or third party software to enable this feature?

I just wanted to close out this question.
I never received a clear answer but in the end I don't need to use the function. My concern was that a new WD1001FALS would be louder than the OEM 320GB HDD in my iMac to the point that I wouldn't be happy with it. Not wanting to trade speed for quiet I passed on the Green caviar and went for the Black. After living with it for several weeks I can say that it is very quiet and while I don't know if it's measurably louder than the old drive, it's not enough for me to notice (and I'm pretty picky).
So, I'm happy with the drive as-is, case closed.

  • Process for new hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I was hoping somebody could point me to some tutorials for upgrading the hard drive in my PowerBook G4 (1Ghz).
I own an external drive (usb only) that is the same size as the drive in my PB (80gb), this is what I'd use to back up my hard drive (I could borrow a larger drive from work if necessary).
What is the best process for backing up? Should I use Carbon Copy? I already have Retrospect Express.
How can I make sure that I won't need to reinstall all my 3rd party apps (ex; iLife, Photoshop)? Would all of this be ported over when I copy my old hard drive over to the new hard drive?
What is the best process for copying the backed up/copied hard drive to the new hard drive? Won't I need to reinstall Tiger first? Then run updates?
    Thanks for the help!

"What is the best process for backing up? Should I use Carbon Copy? I already have Retrospect Express."
I just replaced my drive, I used SuperDuper, it worked flawlessly, a major first for me since using OS X. I swear I'm not from that company, but it made a perfect bootable disk, important since I was swapping drives directly after copying data via USB to external enclosure. Had drive duplication problems prior, carbon copy was a no-go for me, to complicated, something not right w/ the updates, i forget what, it has been a while, just remember I was forced to reinstall apps.
Should have gotten a firewire enclosure, could have tested it first w/ target mode, oh well.

  • Need Win 7 recovery discs for new hard drive

I am not sure which Windows 7 Operating system my laptop had, but I need the recovery discs to put Windows 7 back on my HP dv6-6167cl notebook.
My original issue was that my notebook was unable to restore or anything on its own.  After calling HP support and performing a guided diagnostics test, it was determined that my hard drive was bad.  I purchased a new hard drive and replaced it, but need to get Windows 7 back on it.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Your notebook originally shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit - you can order a replacement set of Recovery Media from the link on your Product Page below.

  • Recovery Disk wont work for new Hard drive.

I have a HP Pavilion dv5-2132dx with windows 7 64-bit. Recently a message started popping up warning that the hard drive might fail and I need to back up my data. I decided to buy a new hard drive. The hard drive a bought is 320GB SATA 7200RPM by western digital. It is the same brand and model as the hard drive currently in the computer. I popped in the new hard drive and inserted the recovery disks I bought from HP. The computer goes through the whole process of istalling the disks. However, on the final setup it shows the welcome screen. Then u hear a beep and then the screen goes black with a message saying that windows could not install and to try installing it again. I have done this 3 times and its always the same thing. Is this a Hard drive issue or a software issue and how can i get this to work?

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around.
Create a retail Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below ( this must be the exact version your notebook came with ) and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • How to change jumper settings on Toshiba hard drive?

    Hello,
I have a 1.33 ghz 12 inch Powerbook model. Recently, I had been experiencing occassional failure on the internal 60GB hard drive, and I decided to have the drive replaced altogether before the whole thing died. I've got a new drive in the computer now - and wanted to get back onto the old one to access some information. I picked up an external 2.5" enclosure to access the drive as an external drive - the only thing is that I believe I have to change the drive's jumper settings to "slave," and I can't figure out how to do it for the life of me. Anyone know how to change this setting on these internal drives, or what I need to do in order to access my information using an external drive enclosure? Thanks so much...

What kind of enclosure is it? For more than one HD so it would be the second one? Otherwise you can just put the drive in the enclosure and use it over FW or USB. Single HD external disks work afaik best with the HD set to master or cable select -> most times no settings change needed.

I just got a new OS and Hard drive and repair shop that fixed said they would have skipped over anything asking to create password. When I turn on computer it loads fine and when I go to system pref/users it asks me for a old password. Nothing seems to be working. How can I figure this out?

  • Recommendations for new hard drive

It looks like I will have to replace my hard drive--If I want to get one myself does anyone know of a good brand--I have a Gateway laptop that is 1 1/2 yrs old and it has 120 gb--
    Thanks for the advice--

You will need to determine which type of drive you have in your Gateway laptop.  It's either an "EIDE" or a "Serial ATA" drive.  If your drive is crashed, you will not be able to tell from Control Panel/Hardware/Devices which type it is.  Typically, laptop hard drives on newer (less than 3 years old) are fairly cumbersome to remove.  It may actually require taking the case apart to get to the drive.  You will need the manufacturer and model number.  It may say EIDE or SATA on the case of the drive.
If you reply here with the model of the laptop, I can look online for you.
When you determine the form factor of the drive (SATA, EIDE) you should look for either a Western Digital, Maxtor or Segate drive.  Here are some links to the drives on the BB website.
    Western EIDE
    Western Digital SATA
Both are around $80.00 and are 250GB.
Good luck and let me know if I can help you with researching the drive.

  • Why does installation cd not work for new hard drive for 2009 MacBook pro?

my hard drive died in my 2009 MacBook pro so I bought a 1tb ssd drive and had the store physically install the drive only.   I arrived home and stuck in the original installation disc and pressed and held the c key after the chime. Nothing happened. after a minute or so the screen turned black and rebooted up again with the chime.  It would continue to reboot whether I pressed the c key or not. when i pressed the d key it would say:
"Apple hardware test does not support this machine"
why why isn't this working like it is supposed to?
    thsnks

    Ryan,
Have you tried using the Startup Manager (holding down the option key) whilst booting? If everything works as it should, you should be given the option to choose the DVD to boot. Holding down the 'D' key should load the Apple Hardware Test.
    Good luck,

  • Tecra A2 Limits for new hard drive

    I have a Tecra A2.MS101E
Is their a limit to the size of hard drive I can up grade to from the 40 GB that was in  it.
    Iwas thinking of 160GB
    Thanks
    Jan

    Hi
I dont know how much capacity has the HDD in your Tecra but in my opinion you should use the capacity of 80 GB maximum. I have no much experience with some technical stuff but I have heard that faster HDD with more capacity can produce much more warmness and it is not advisable.

  • AFP error for new hard drive for time machine The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.

Purchased Seagate network drive, ethernet attached to wireless router, set up went well but attempts at backup with Time Machine failed. "Do I need to erase disk and reformat or is this error message "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" indicating some other error?

That means the NAS drive's OS isn't compatible with the version of OSX you're running.   See if the maker has an update.

  • Please help!  Cannot access TC backups on new hard drive with Lion!

I know this seems like a generic posting, and believe me that I have searched through countless posts to find the situation most similar to mine.  To start, the basic story (I am pretty computer illiterate, so excuse the lack of terminology):
-My computer was working slow, beach balling, etc. two weeks ago - took to Apple Genius Bar for help and they suggested need for new hard drive. I already had a hard drive crash in January, but since I have had a Time Capsule running Time Machine since September 2009, I hooked it right up and restored from a backup with no issue... so I wasn't worried about this.  I waited to make sure that I had the most recent backup (and needed to use my computer for law school for a couple days), so I turned it in a day later immediately after a complete incremental backup via TM on my TC.
-Got my computer back from the Apple "depot" with new hard drive and hard drive cable.
-Had an extremely hard time getting my TC to link to my computer and via AppleCare phone help, realized that Apple had given me back my computer with Leopard, and they said that I needed to go back to the store to get a Lion reinstall since the backups had been done in Lion.
-Went back to Apple store, reinstalled Lion... they told me there would be no issue once I got home and hooked up to TC.  Connected to TC via ethernet and went through "set up" procedure as if it was new computer - could never get past the "Select the Disk" page.  Either it was beach-balling or just sitting there, and I couldn't click continue or anything.
-Called AppleCare again, they said to try it through Migration Assistant instead of Set Up... again, could not connect to TC.  They said it was too complicated to do over the phone and sent me back to the store...
-By now, I am on vacation and spent 5, yes FIVE, hours at another store trying to migrate the data to no avail.  I obviously don't know everything they tried, but I know they tried installing each operating system since Leopard, going through set up and migration assistant, and doing a disk repair of the TC.  None of this worked.  Every single time my TC connects and you can see the title of the drive ("Data") and the two separate backups ("emilysmac" was my old computer and "emilysmacbookpro" was the dummy one we tried to make).  Emilysmacbookpro was accessible with no data on it, but once we clicked on emilysmac it just said "connecting" forever and never did anything.
    Basically:
-300GB of my TC shows that it has been used, so I know something is there.
-I can also pull up the data on another computer, and it shows files dated from September 2009 up to the date I last updated, but they do not look how they used to - they are "Unix Executable" files and cannot open through Time Machine.
I have a really hard time thinking that my TC AND my computer hard drive failed at the same time - which is actually what Apple suggested to me.  Is there anything that anyone knows that will help?!  I am desperate here!  This TC had backups of all my music, pictures and law school work over the past 2.5 years.  Any help would be much appreciated!

PS I have also looked through Pondini's site, but I am not sure if I am missing something since I don't totally understand all of it.  Thanks again!
