Jumpin' / vibrating iMac G5 display --- can this mac be saved?

My G5 display shifts or vibrates a few pixels (all 4 directions) especially when I move the mouse. This is annoying to me and my oldest daughter says it gives her motion sickness. The machine is in otherwise good condition (except for a noisy superdrive). Installed OSX 10.5.5 recently and that did not help. Is this a sign of this faithful iMac's impending "retirement"?

Hey, Phil-I have no answer for you, but wanted to let you know that this exact thing just started happening to me today. I have no idea what caused it; I shut it down last night rather than just putting it to sleep and when I logged in today this started. Only the desktop display moves-if I have a window open in which I am working it doesn't seem to happen.
Have you had any luck finding an answer to this issue? If so-or if you do in the future, would you please post it here? I'll do the same.

  • Can I use iMac as display for new mac mini?

can I hook my early 2008 24" Core 2 Duo iMac to a new Mac Mini to use as a display?
I love the display, but my iMac is getting too slow, even with the maximally upgraded RAM to 4 GB.  I don't want to get rid of my iMac, so I was thinking of buying a Mac Mini to attach it.
I'm worried that the OS X Yosemite will make my iMac even slower.
    Any suggestions?

Not without a standalone monitor; that iMac doesn't support video in.

  • How can this encoding be saved in SQL Server 2008

    hi all,
We are using Sql Server 2008, it has this collation set "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS". Please have a look at this file:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxWAyvJA9ZjCdkFNN3BXZUw3dEE/view?pli=1
its a text file in text format (ascii test data format aka ATDF). Its coming from French vendor and it contains some French words. We have to parse this and upload data to sql server. We do that all the time except this file is not working. It just disturbs
the way sql server is saving data for us, and upon showing this saved data on application UI, the correct letters don't display. The upload happens via the Bulk Insert command. Please guide as to where to start. Also please let me know exactly what this format
is called, do we call it just unicodes, or some utf formats. I'm really ignorant when it comes to unicode. Thanks a lot!

    Hi
Please use Unicode data types on the SQL Server side. Please see the following document:

  • Same machine - many MAC and IP addresses.  How can this happen?

Both my machines show (on WakeonLan) as having more than one IP address and MAC address. This resulted yesterday in my wife's Windows laptop which had a fixed ip address not working because the IP address had recently been adopted by the iMac.
How can this happen please and can I clean it up?

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

    Hello -
My iMac has developed a video display problem. Everything now appears in a strange, cartoonish way. Purples, greens, blues. Can this be fixed, and if so, any idea how much it might cost? Also, could I output to a seperate monitor? I plan to replace the unit , but cannot right now. Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing.
In the Display area, reset it to "Black on white" by clicking that checkbox.
You can also reset it by pressing Command-Option-Control-8

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
    Then, install OS X.

  • HT4561 I have a IMAC 7.1 with a Mac OS X v 10.5.8. Can I upgrade this machine to 10.6.8

I have a IMAC 7.1 with a Mac OS X v 10.5.8. Can I upgrade this machine to 10.6.8 or to the latest MAC OS software version?

Yes, that unit can be upgraded to the latest (Mavericks). First you will need to get to Snow Leopard (10.6). Check the link below for details.

  • Can I and how do connect power mac to imac so I can use imac display

Is there a way I can use my imac and power mac together.
My purpose is to use the display of the imac when using the power mac.
If it possible please be so kind to tell me how to.
    Thank you!

    Hi Howard Herrick;
I doubt it because to the best of my knowledge you are only going to find connectors on the iMac to connect and external monitor to it not to connect another computer to the iMac's screen.

  • I want to burn music cds on my iMac that I can use on other cd players not just on a pc or mac how do I do this?

I want to burn music cds on my iMac that I can use on other cd players not just on a pc or mac how do I do this?

    Hi, neighbour!
Create your playlist in iTunes, making sure it will fit on a CD (time and size of playlist shown at bottom of window).
I think as you're in Lion, it'll be iTunes 10? If so I believe the burn option is now in one of the menus - probably 'file', but it shouldn't take much finding).
    Selecting Burn should give you a dialogue some thing like this;
(This is iTunes 9, so it may not be exactly the same).
Choose Audio CD and set the gap if reqd.
Click burn, then insert the CD when prompted in the top of the iTunes window.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Their are some display adaptors you can get. I have an older Mac Pro with DVI but my monitor is a Thunderbolt Display. This used to be around $250. It is way cheaper now.

while using my imac the display just cuts off but the machine is still on and I have to push the power button a couple of times fir it to cut back on whats causing this?

    Hi keithfromcapitol heights,
It sounds as if your iMac is going to sleep unexpectedly. Is this during use or after it has been left alone for a while (which can be normal if it is set that way?) If during use, I would suggest that you reset your System Management Controller, using the steps in this article -

  • Can a Mac Pro (2.66 ghz duel core) be upgradable to support Thunderbolt displays and other devices.

Can a Mac Pro (2.66 ghz duel core (4cores)) be upgradable to support Thunderbolt displays and other devices. Does this need to be done through the Graphics card expansion or a additional card to be inserted?

No. There is no way to upgrade any Mac Pro older then the cylindrical 2013 Mac Pro to ThunderBolt.
The requirements of Thunderbolt require a totally redesigned motherboard and chip set rather any plugin cards. These motherboard were never developed for older Mac Pros.
