Jumping cursor as I type

I just recieved my new PB today and havne't been able to use it because of the jumping cursor problem when I am trying to type. When I type my hands are elevated at about 1/2 an inch over the track pad. As I type in both Entourage and Word, my mouse will suddenly register a click and move my cursor to where ever my mouse is sitting, usually a few lines above. sometimes it will select the text to above the line and as I continue to type it will over write the content.
I have seen another posting about a similar problem with people clicking the trackpad. I'm not doing that, my hands are no where near the trackpad.
Anyone seen this behavior? Or more importantly, a solution?

This preference has been around for quite a while although the problem you are experiencing surfaced when Apple started making their own trackpad as opposed to buying Synaptics (I that's who they were from).
One option you have which will fix the problem is to attach a mouse. That way you can turn the trackpad off when you have the mouse attached. Otherwise, what you can also do is turn off trackpad clicking. Yes this does force you to use the clicker but will mean that the trackpad alone can't move your cursor.

  • Jumping cursor while typing, how can I stop it?

My cursor keeps jumping around when I type message. Whats wrong with my mac and how can I fix it? Please help!
All the keys are fine and everything else runing good, but whenever I type messages or a long message it just keeps jumping back like one word or two and I keep having to click back where I left off. It usually happens when I push the space bar. I'm not sure what the problem is. Should I just take it to the mac store?

Your keys could be dirty especially if you make it a habit of eating & drinking while using your computer.  A can of compressed air or a brushed vacuum hose will get the dirt out from under the keys.

  • Jumping cursor messes up typing?

I have noticed that while I am typing that my cursor may jump to a different location so as to cause me to continue typing in the wrong area. I do have one possible solution-- I have noticed that the page up/down buttons are a little close and thought that I may be bumping the key while typing as they are very sensitive.
I have also seen some erratic behavior with the mouse pad occasionally.
    Two questions:
Anyone else having these issues and have you found the solution?
If it is just the bumping into the up page key then is there a way to disable the page up key?

o you think its possible that the track pad is reading my hands as they float over the track pad?
    (1" - 3" above it? )
Unlikely. I do not think it is possible.
I have not had a problem since doing the switch but I also have not done a lot of typing either so I am still keeping this post open for now.
I have noticed though that now my cursor gets stuck when I try to move it. I now have to sort of run my finger all over the trackpad to get it going. I think this is due to the one setting for "ignore accidental trackpad input".
It is a real pain by itself, lot to mention the jumping cursor problem.
I love Mac-- I hate Mac support.

  • Cursor Jumping around forms as type - now with 3.6.12 on windows 7 - makes impossible to use

Have windows 7 installed with Firefox 3.6.12 - whenever bring up page with multiple field entries - as I type it jumps all around the page into other text areas or around inside the same text area and even seems to activate some navigation and submission options when I do not want it to.

I am also having this problem as well. When i try to click on the web search box (to type in a web address), also anything i click on or try to type is jumps around all by it's self.(It's the mouse cursor) When i even point or try to click it goes all over the place i get dizzy watching it dance all over the place! I have never had this problem before EVER! I though something was wrong with my computer and i decided to google it and see if anyone else is having any trouble with this, and i found that several people are. I thought maybe it was because i haven't updated to a newer version, so i did that and it didn't correct te problem at all! any helpful suggestion will be greatly appreciated! I also don't see how i will correct the problem if it is jumping all over the place no matter what i do. Also, I do not have any other things open or running on my computer to cause any problems.

  • Jumping cursor

Can anyone help me please? My cursor goes all over the place when I try to type. Typing e-mails, typing in this post, typing in the google question bar, everything.
If I don't watch it constantly (and I am no touch typist) I find I have typed over something I have previously typed. it keeps jumping all over the place.
I also have trouble with the pointer. It sticks a lot and is difficult to control.
What can I do to cure it?

I joined purely because I have been experiencing the self same problem with my curser. Before I try this 'fix' of turning off my touch pad, how do I turn it on again please, as I don't have an external mouse.

  • Apple's user forum jumps cursor

As I type in these message fields on Apple's own forum, Safari will arbitrarily make my cursor jump up a few lines as I'm typing. I don't know what's causing it. I'm typing along and then BAM the cursor jumps to the end of a line above and I am typing up there instead of where I was.
    Anyone else getting this behavior?
    Thanks

Go step by step and test.
    1. Restart
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.
    3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
       4. Reset PRAM:   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222

  • A11-ST3500 :: missing Win login dialog, jumping cursor, delayed file saves

Greetings.  Lifelong HP user.  Decided to try Toshiba for employee and myself.
Went online and configured Tecra A-11SP3500.  Have had nothing but problems.  Mainly after it goes to sleep mode, when I try to wake it, I get the background screen with no log in.  Must take the battery out in order to reboot.
As has happened twice as I have been typing this so far, the cursor jumps all over the screen.
Both issues are common with both laptops purchased.
Then there is the lag when I attempt to save anything.  "Save As" screen pops up, "Not Responding" pops to the top of the screen and 10-15 seconds later it will save.
I am running very little on the machine.  Office 2010 and little else.
I have contacted support thrice.  Had trouble locating model # as all that is on or in the unit is A-11 but all listings have a suffix afterward.  Finally got support on third call, to help locate the support page and a model number via the s/n.
Reloaded OS once after initial install.  Upgraded bios and drivers.  All to no avail.  Support seems to know or care very little about the product or problem.
Any suggestions are welcomed.  I am a very disappointed customer and wish I had stuck with HP.

    Hi Ross,
Have you tried calling back support (800-457-7777) after reloading the OS and updating the BIOS and drivers?  If not, I recommend giving that a shot, along with looking for assistance from this user community.
If the Toshiba tech you speak with can't resolve the issue then they should either escalate your call to a higher-skilled agent or refer you to a repair center, if they determine that there is a hardware failure.  Send me a Private Message with your name, phone number, and laptop's serial number if your call does not result in a suitable resolution.
I understand your disappointment but am renaming the Subject of this thread to something that describes the problems you're reporting, since that is much more likely to lead to finding help here in the forums.

  • Ref cursors vs Custom Types

I am looking for an advice on performance.
We have a .NET 4.0 web service sitting on top of Oracle 10G database. So far we have been using REF CURSORS and it worked well for us. But, there is this one place in the service where we expose an "overview" type which requires a number of "single-record" datapoints from a lot of tables. If we go with our old approach, we'd get 14 REF CURSORS for 1 WS call. Each of these REF CURSORS is super fast because it retrieves jus a single record, but still it's 14 of those. All datapoints come from different tables.
Would you recommend that I switch to OUTPUT parameters that use Oracle UDT types that map into .NET types instead of using REF CURSORS? For multi-record data points, I think it's REF CURSORS, but for single-record datapoints, I just can't decide.
I ran a load test against a single-record REF CURSOR vs Oracle UDT, and performance is virtually the same.
What would you suggest I do? Is there another, more performant, way?
    Thanks.
    Evgueni

    Hi Eric,
I'm new here, so not sure how much help I can be... but I think that part of your question can be answered on page 3-37 through to 3-39 of the Oracle .Net Data Provider manual (data conversions).
Here's the best I can do so far on nullable columns, using a datareader:
if (reader["Type_Id"] as DBNull == null)
    ct.TypeId = Convert.ToInt32(reader["Type_Id"]);
My column in this case was defined on the DB as int - which IIRC really gets translated to NUMBER(38,0)... which is way too large for an int32. Never mind, I am going to sort that out in the DB sometime soon... but in the meantime, the Convert.ToInt32 (or should I have used int32.Parse or similar???) does the trick. I think if my ct.TypeId had been declared as 'decimal', or if my db column had been defined as NUMBER(5,0) (and kept ct.TypeId as Int) then either change would have meant I could get away without the conversion... but don't quote me on that ;)

  • Need cursor to select type when dragged

There must be a preference to set but nothing I do helps...I know I've been able to do it before, but now when I put the selection arrow (black arrow) into a line of type by double clicking, I am unable to then drag the cursor to select the row of type. Triple clicking does nothing.
In other words, double clicking with the selection tool places the cursor in a word, but how to then highlight the word??
In Preferences, it doesn't matter if the 'Double Click to Isolate' box is checked or not and the 'Object Selection by Path Only' is unchecked.
    I know it's something simple.
    thanks!

    Kurt,
    you are GOLD!
now if I can only remember this!
    Best wishes!

  • Windows 7 hang/freezes | jumping cursor

For no appear reason my win7 will hang and freezes, ctrl/alt/del won't help and the only way is to force shut down on the power button.
My usual programs running are: MS office, safari, Chrome, Window Explorer.
Another issue is, as I am typing this, the cursor will starts to jump randomly... I'm not anywhere near the touchpad, and it has already occurred 3 times while typing this message.
It's relatively a new macbook pro, Windows7 with bootcamp 3.2 installed.

I haven't gotten through the installation yet. I get a disk read error before the install is complete. Then it freezes and Cntrl, Alt, Delete doesn't work. After trying for at least five minutes I can turn off the computer and go back to the Mac OS. This after trying all kinds of things including downloading new versions of Boot Camp and firmware that my computer rejected. Anyone have any suggestions, or I will have to call Microsoft. I notice sometimes the dvds don't work without a phone call to punch in a code.

  • Jump cursor

I did a search and didn't find anything on this subject. My cursor jumps around. I can be searching with the cursor. Click on some link. When the page finishes loading. My cursor jumps to another place on the screen. Any ideas? really got worse after installing Leopard.
    Thanks, Dave.

Is it a wireless mouse or wired? What kind of surface are you running it on? Some (especially older) optical mice can be touchy about the surface they are working on. Mirrors and glass are a definite no-no. Woodgrain can present problems. So too can very smooth, featureless, colorless surfaces. You may need a mouse pad.
