Jumpy export to dv tape

I have a one hour project which I would like to save on dv tape. I have over 21 GB free space. The project plays OK but when I try to export it back to digital camera it jumps around and jams. The audio keeps playing. I have tried repairing permission with Onyx, and read some of the previous discussions on this. I started with two hours of footage, and edited down to one. What I actually want to do is delete the old project, then reimport this new one hour of footage back into iMovie, so that I can add another 20 minutes or so without going below 20GB free space.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. Have worked on this for two days straight and am stressing about losing all my work!
Thanks
Chris

I had the same problem and it was driving me nuts. Check out the reply of SDIllini on this thread. It worked for me

  • Exporting to DV tape with a DVX 100a

I am trying to export a project from FCP to DV tape using my DVX 100A camera as a deck (I know that it would be better to use a regular deck but that's not in the budget right now so please no need to offer advice about using a regular deck).
I have read that the fire wire of fcp 4 is not supported by the DVX 100A. However, I can get the computer to communicate in capturing mode with the dvx through firewire, but cannot get it to communicate the other way - - going from the computer to the camera to export to tape.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Jim

    thanks for the response.
I am wondering though, what are you referring to when you say QT ISSUES. what is QT6?
When you download from you computer on to your DVX, what setting did you use on your DVX? I put mine on video, but get nothing other than a blank blue screen. As noted before, I know that the camera and computer are communicating because I was able to control the camera through the firewired in that mode.
I might just be missing a very simple step. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Cant export back to tape

    Hi,
I use iMovie since 3 years ago, and so far no prob, but since yesterday this prob is bugging me. I have FCP4 installed in the same drive (which later upgraded to 4.5HD then FCP5)and i know the issue regarding export to tape failure and i have always followed the same procedure everytime i wanted to export to tape frm iMovie (to drag out the 2 Qtime FCP plugins onto desktop) and it worked, until yesterdau.
I need to move this huge iMovie file (almost 2 hours, but its not a prob, i have previously did more than 3 hours project in iMovie without a glitch) to tape urgently, and im stuck with this 'Communicating with camera prob.." everytime i tried.
I have also deleted my FCP and all programs that came with it, but still the prob wont go.
Help Me!! I cant seem to find the answer anywhere, and if upgrading to newwer iMovie is the solution, im not buying bcos i love iMovie4, with all my great plugins in hand.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Problems exporting SD to tape in Prem Cs5.5

    Hi Guys.
I am having trouble exporting SD footage back to my camera from the time line. HDV footage exports  back to camera  fine. Capturing both SD and HDV is not a problem. Exporting SD and HVD to Encore is also fine. I have tried switching cameras using both an HD and an SD camera. I just keep having issue with SD. I have tried with both device control enabled and disabled.
I have also exported from the timeline  to my HD using media encoder(avi) and then opened a new project, changing project settings and importing the AVI file but still Sd will not export to tape. Both cameras appear to go from DV out when the clip starts to play and then reverts back to Dv in. This does not happen when exporting HD.
Any advice would be appreciated  Thanks

I don't use tape, but some links I saved may (or may not) help

  • Export avchd to tape

Hi I am required to send some footage to someone from my canon hf s21, and I was wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to log and transfer it and then put the footage into an dv ntsc anamorphic sequence. And, after that print it to mini dv tape via my panasonic mini dv cam. I don't know if the downgraded material would look sloppy or not.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Here's my guess. Try creating a new HDV sequence, then import your AVCHD sequence and place it on the HDV sequence timeline. Connect and turn on your HDV device and export to tape. Premiere will probably have to render the timeline before the export begins.

  • How to export to DVCAM tape with timecode from Premiere CS 6?

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I need to give a dvcam tape with proper timecode to a television station for a Show I edit. I am editing for this station for last 7 years. Before they accepeted betacam, but now they changed to DVCAM. I have Premiere Pro 6 (or CC) and SONY HVR M15U deck. I connected it via firewire, then realized firewire can't export timecode. Now I am in a pickle.
    Possible solutions (may be):
    - Buy a card, send other signal like SDI to the deck?
    - Buy new deck?
Please help. I able to print to tape via firewire, but how can I print the timecode?
    Thanks
    Raman

    realized firewire can't export timecode.
    Sure it can.

  • Distortion in audio when exporting HDV to tape

I'm having trouble sending a native HDV project back to tape. The picture looks fine on the export, but the audio is severely distorted. It's not overmodulation. I have a -10 limiter on the audio master track, and the VUs on my deck don't show anything like any clipping. But the sound it's making is similar to clipping. Any ideas? Thanks,
    Stu

    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450/4000
    Sony HV-U15 deck

    Howard,
Thanks for the reply. It's hard to describe the sound...it actually reminds me of the sound a 16mm projector makes when it loses its loop, sort of a strobing distortion. As for constancy, no it's definitely not constant in the sense that, say, ground loop hum is constant. It's "attached" to the sounds as the play back, so that when the timeline is very quiet it's hardly audible, but when you get any sound at all, it comes up. I know that might sound like clipping, but I don't see how it could possibly be for a few reasons:
    1. There's a -9 limiter on the audio master track.
    2. It sounds perfectly fine both in timeline playback and when exported to Encore.
    3. The VUs in the original source clips, the timeline, and the deck on output all show clean levels with no clipping.
I'm wondering if it's related to my deck, but I haven't had a chance to check that yet. I'll try outputting to the camera when I get back in to work on Monday, but if you have any other ideas as to what the cause might be, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks.

  • Can't export to DV tape

    Hi there
    I have a G5 PowerMac, 3 years old, and a Cannon XM2, 3 years old.
    I have a question I hope a 3 year old can answer...
I can import from my camera - so it's connected fine, but I can't export to tape - it boots me out. iMovie just dissapears and I get the option of sending a gobbledy gook 'report', but that's it.
Strange. Don't remember having this problem before - is there a setting I need to change? On my camera perhaps? Or in iMovie? I just don't get why I can import but not export.
    many thanks

If your problem is not a communications problem between Mac and the camcorder, it is likely the problem is related to your system being too slow to deal with the high data rate of exporting. Try exporting a few second video with no titles and no extra sound tracks for testing purposes. I am assuming that your camcorder moves the tape when exporting and that you just get a blank screen when you play back. If you have what appears to be a blank video recording, play it back again but this time push pause and see whether you see a still frame? Wish you luck.
I had experienced two circumstances that caused your problem, especially when I had multiple soundtracks and effects. Apple support was no help when I struggled to fix this problem and I found solutions below.
    1) I used an external Firewire drive that was PC formatted. I reformatted the drive to MacOS and the problem went away.
    2) I used an Firewire external drive that was too slow where I stored my iMovie project. I could capture and create DVDs just fine, but the bit rate was too slow to export to my Firewire camcorder. (Is your hard drive 7200rpm, not something slower?) Do you have any background applications running slowing down iMovie operation?
    3) Have you disconnected your camcorder from your computer and turned it off. Also have you shut down your iMac, not just rebooting, then started it from scratch and then connected your camcorder? Also try plugging in your powered up Firewire camcorder before starting iMovie. It turned out to be a miscommunications with one camcorder under certain conditions.
    4) In Sony camcorders in the menu system there is a item "A/V to DV out". Try turning that off if you have it.

  • Long time export/share to tape

Hello, just wondering why HD 6 takes sooooooooo long to export to mini DV tape when I could just play it off the time line in imovie 4?
    Thanks Leg

Exporting HD 1080i video back to the camera is a very different process than exporting DV video back to a DV camera in iMovie 4. (Importing is different too.)
Exporting HDV requires lots more processing than exporting DV. Exporting DV occurs in real time, but for HDV, iMovie HD must convert the video of your iMovie project back to the HDTV format that the camera uses. That takes lots of time. How much depends on the speed of the computer.
Note that the "Share to file, for sending to camera later" option lets you export the project to a file that you can later send to the camera. Then the export-to-camera time is shortened. The process is split into two parts, actually.
For a discussion of this issue, see David Pogue's book "iMovie 6 & iDVD: The Missing Manual", page 280, which I relied on for this note.
David Babsky, a frequent poster here, may be available to say more. He has posted several summaries of HDV editing here. Search for messages he has authored.

  • How do i export video from tape camcorder to imovie?

i know it's in here somewhere...but just want to know what i need and how to do it. my canon camcorder is probably 6 years old...uses cassette tapes. i want to download all of them onto my imac (OS 10) and manipulate them in imovie. can anyone advise what i need to do? thanks...

Does it have a FireWire port? If not I would suggest spending the 100.00 for the adapter that allows you to convert it from VHS to your Mac. Best Buy or your local Apple Store should have then in stock. Or go here and order it http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/ConsumerProducts/Home+Video/Studio+Family/Video+Capture+forMac.htm

  • Exporting to video tape, no sound

I have imported an analog video tape into FCE through Dazzle. Clips for images and sound appear in FCE timeline and playback is fine for both the images and audio. When I try to "Print to Video" this sequence, images appear on the video tape but no sound whether video output is set for Firewire or real time. All is rendered, mixdown audio is activated and connections are secure. I can output other sequences (containing imported scanned clips with voice overlay) and the resulting video images and sound are fine. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks much, Jack

Tom: I'm using FCE v1.0.1, output is from Mac-4 via firewire, through Dazzle to a Panasonic tape recorder. Incidentally do you know the highest FCE version that I can use with Mac OS 10.2.8? Current problem seems to be focused only on those clips in the timeline derived from a video tape. That sequence plays fine (both image and sound) on the desk top and external TV screen but there is no sound when I am in the "Print to Video" mode. I've gone through this exercise in the past with timeline clips sourced from video with no problem. Thanks as always, Jack

  • How best to export back to video camera dv tape?

I know iMovie no longer has the export back to tape option in 09 version. But, there must be a good way to do it anyway? Does 09 allow me to export to DV (MyMovie.dv)? If so, then I guess I could take that exported file and import it into my old iMovie 6, and then export from there back to a DV tape via firewire. If someone knows a better way, the let me know.
    Thanks

You can avoid all video editors by using an app called SimpleVideoOutX:
    http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/Introduction/In tro.html
Just download the SampleCode archive, extract the archive and look for SimpleVideoOut X.app. Just drop the video on the app icon to launch the app.
It has been around for MANY years, but not well known. This is a free app created to do exactly what you want. Caveat is, to go to DV, the video file can NOT be higher than DV resolution, or the screen with just show black on the DV camera. But it will work with any SD, or lower, resolution video file that Quicktime will play back. I have watched many videos on my TV this way, and it is MUCH cheaper than an Apple TV, with out the format issues.
You can select DVCPRO HD, Digital Cinema Desktop and FireWire as the output options. For DV, select Output=Firewire, and Mode=Apple FireWire NTSC.
There are a couple other option available at the bottom right of screen to play with, but generally, the defaults work for the majority of cases.
For extensive detail on its use, check this article:

  • Only Audio Is Exporting to Tape????

    Hi
I am trying to export a sequence to a minidv tape on FCP, using my dvx100a as a deck. I've been able to do this before...only this time, only the audio is exporting to the tape, and the video shows up as just black. When I stop the exporting process, the frame which I exit on shows up on the camera's viewfinder but is not recorded.
Any suggestions on how I can get both video and audio to export to the tape?
    Thanks in advance!

Neither of theses suggestions solved my problem...
...maybe somebody could tell me what my ideal A/V Setting should be if i am trying to a simple print to video with a miniDV camera (firewire)...and why only black shows up for video?
the best ive gotten so far is being able to play the video on the timeline and have it show up on the camera...i can hear the audio, but on the camera screen, all that shows up is the 1st frame and it holds as the audio plays.
    What is going on!?!?
    im really stuck
    Thanks!

  • Can't Export to tape with CS4 and Canon XL2

I can capture just fine from my XL2 but I can't export out to tape.  It doesn't set the camera up as a playback monitor.  How can I remedy this situation?  Is there a setting I am missing?

Make sure External Device under Export is enabled in the Playback Settings of the Program monitor.

  • Why does exporting HD to a tape take a very long time?

Not a tech problem, really, just a question: just wondering if anyone in here knows why it takes forever to export an HD movie back to HD videotape? I sometimes like to backup my raw footage tapes and have always done so with SD format but HD takes FOREVER, relatively speaking.
On my old SD camera, I could import in real time and watch it on the screen as it imported, and then export back out in real time as well.
Now, obviously HD is a much bigger file format so it's going to naturally take longer and it does, as import usually goes about half speed (I use firewire) but it all gets digitized okay. A full length 60 minute tape takes about 90- 120 minutes to import fully.
The problem is when I want to export that exact same footage back to a duplicate tape. Last night I did one (and it's still going now) that is taking 14 hours to export back to tape. Granted, the duplication is perfect and gets everything on the tape, but it just takes 6 - 7 times longer to do it than it did on import.
So here's my question: why would it import in 2 hours and then export in 14?

Thanks, Andy -- that's exactly what it is. I should have noted in my original post that the videocamera/tape itself wasn't wasn't moving/recording during that long time window, but I was getting a window on the Mac screen that read "exporting to camera" and then below that "Encoding".
I was wondering why encoding was necessary to export and now that I've Googled the term "conform", I see that it's because of the conform process.
Just too bad it takes so darned long.
    Thanks for the info.
