Jumpy Flash Playback

Hello all.
I'm new to the forums and relatively new to mac so please excuse any blinding ignorance.
I am having problems with Flash playback eating up loads of processor power and as a result am getting jumpy Flash playback on several sites. Some are worse than others but Lovefilm, for example, is practically unwatchable.
When I stream videos via the internet (all browsers are equally as bad, but I predominantly use Chrome) and check the activity monitor, I find that Flash is using up most of the available CPU resource. I am on:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Hard Drive: 250 GB
OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4
I have done some research and found that this seems to be a relatively common problem, but have not been able to find a resolution. This thread seems to sum up the same problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2000693&start=0&tstart=0
but with no real resolution. I have checked on the adobe site and it says that I am running the latest version of Flash.
Does anybody have any ideas what I could try?
Thanks.

Flash on Mac is generally a poor performer, particularly on Macs, so there may not be an immediate solution. First, though, try removing your current Flash installation using Adobe's uninstaller:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/uninstallflash_playerosx.dmg
and reinstalling the latest version. That might help. If not, you can try the beta version of the next release:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/
and see if that works better for you.
Hope this helps.

  • Jumpy/repeated playback on rendered AVCHD footage

    Hi folks!
I am experiencing multiple jumpy & sometimes repeated frames during playback on rendered AVCHD files on Premiere Pro CS4. It's really hard to catch since it happens on multiple files and the jumpyness can be like a rewind or it skip frames.
The 5 second file sample below skips a few frames, pay attention to frames 38 to 39(Man does the cross). It skips! Also notice the first few frames of the footage gets jumpy.
Playback inside Premiere is fine and smooth. The problem only shows on the rendered footage's playback.
    File: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=30XONDN2
    Software: Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1
    Output: H.264 or Quicktime MOV(Animation)
    OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2
    Camera: Panasonic HMC150 (AVCHD)
    Settings: 720/24p
    Any ideas on the solution?
    Thanks!

ah right, you're on the Mac, I missed that in the first post, sorry.
try re-installing quicktime by going to the Apple site and downloading it. This page should open up with your detected OS:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
give that a try and see if you get any improvement.

  • Flash playback jerky

Does anyone else notice slightly jerky playback with Flash Player (the latest version)? It's getting really annoying trying to watch Hulu, for example.
I've tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration in the Flash Player settings, to no avail...
Is it me, or shouldn't Flash play quite smoothly on this machine?

Latest versions of Safari and Firefox. Seriously doubt it's the browsers, since Silverlight (Netflix streaming) runs fine. This seems to be a Flash issue -- happens both with Hulu and Youtube.
After doing a lot more research, it seems like this is an issue with Flash basically sucking with OS X. Found another discussion in the Leopard section about this issue.
I just don't understand how some people DON'T have any stuttering with their unibody MBP. They should all basically be the same when it comes to something like this. This is why I am curious as to whether those who have completely smooth Flash playback have some setting tweaked or something like that?...

  • Jumpy video playback from iPhone 5 to Mac Book Pro

    Hi
I recently took some footage on my iPhone 5 and downloaded onto my 2007 Mac Book Pro via iPhoto. Unfortunately, mid download iPhoto became unresponsive and I had to Force quit.
After restarting iPhoto I saw that the videos had not been downloaded so I started the process again. It was a seemingly successful download so I deleted the videos from my iPhone.
Upon playback all the video's are jumpy. Other older video's all ready in the library are fine.
It seems all the info is in there as each time I play a video back I see different parts of the video ie: the jumps are not all in the same place each time.
    Is it a playback 780 v 1080 issue?
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Interactive booklets don't work, flash playback option nonexistent.

I have an interactive booklet, but whenever I open it, a black screen shows and it goes through 3 seconds of a silent track. I went to this link but the "Enable playback of Adobe Flash tracks" is nonexistent. I have the latest version of QuickTime and iTunes, as whenever I tell them to update it just tries to install Safari, obviously a bad idea.

... Unfortunately, that article about playing interactive booklets is out of date. With QuickTime 7.3.1 and above, the Flash handler has been disabled due to security concerns. There's some more info about that in the following document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307176
... so that check box just doesn't exist anymore in the advanced preferences of a QT 7.4.1 (which it sounds like you've got, given that ASU is only telling you about Safari at the moment).
My guess is that we'll only get it back if a new, secure, Flash handler gets developed for Quicktime.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" Flash playback issues

    Hi,
I recently upgraded from my iMac to a 15" Macbook Pro Retina and although I am overall happy with the decision I am having problems with online video playback using Adobe Flash Player.
The videos jitter and stutter at intervals throughout watching and run playback performance.
I have looked into this issue heavily, putting it down to a hardware fault initially. However all of my tests have brought me back to the utilisation of flash player and my GPU.
    Tests I have run.
I have tried the flash player in Safari, Firefox and Chrome (disabling pepper and using just the flash player downloaded)
I have uninstalled flash and reinstalled
I have reset my Mac's SMC and PRAM to ensure that there are not hardware errors
I have changed the GPU swapping on my computer to not use the lighter graphics card and instead make full use of the 1GB Nvidia graphics card
My computer is running the most up to date of all aspects associated with the errors
I have changed the settings of flash player to use and not use hardware acceleration
I haven't seen any other problems on my mac with playback - which is why is leads me to believe that this problem is more aimed at flash player on my system, than the actual system itself.
Has anyone else had these problems on a similar machine? If so are there any fixes? Or am I just going to have to hang fire for bug fixes?
The spec of my computer can be found at this link - as Macbooks can't be changed its literally as spec-ed on this page!

    Any input would be appreciated
    Tim

No they do not. In fact just the opposite. Some with LG displays and ghosting have been told by Apple it is normal and all screens do it. When in fact they do not.
Buy Applecare extended warranty. Otherwise when your 1 year standard warranty runs out and you have any problems with that retina you might as well throw it away. The cost to fix that unit, should a problem of any type become apparent, will be close to buying a new unit. All the parts are either soldered to the logic, Mother, board or glued into the aluminum case parts. The few parts that aren't are the logic board itself, the WiFi/Bluetooth daughter card, the fans & heatsink system and the proprietary SSD that plugs into a socket on the logic board.
The screen is glued into the case lid and can not be changed without replacing the complete lid along with the WiFi/BT antennas, the web cam and of course the aluminum shell.

  • DIscrepancy between Flash Playback Speed and SWF

I'm experiencing a fairly signifigant DIscrepancy between rate of apparant motion in the flash files Im working on, and "speed" of the "finished" SWFs.
Put another way, what appears to be a reasonable speed for a tween in Flash, is a tad too fast when I view the work as a swf preview.
I would rather find a solid method of working with the images Im creating to determine the proper lengths ..and speed of these tweens prior to publishing a preview and then needing to go back and hand alter the length of the tweens I've created.
A "real time" environment would greatly increase the immediacy of creating such " files"
What can you suggest to synchronize these "playback speeds"?
    Thank you.

How are you creating these tweens?  If you are using coded tweens, what are you using for code?

  • Taking external control of flash playback

Hello: What would be the best way of taking control
(remotely) of the playback of a flash video/slideshow? I can write
an application that can export a .html file to my server with
timecodes, and then as the user plays the flash annimation from my
web site, it could refer to this .html file for 'live' instructions
    on which slide to show?
Would this strategy work, or is there a better way of
    accomplishing this?

  • Flash Playback Problems

    Mac G5 Flash CS3
    Hi,
I'm creating a movie with a swift flies quickly across screen, but in playback it always appears as if there are two or three swifts flying together almost on top of one another, a sort of stuttering effect in the playback.  I've tried altering frame rate/frame number ratio; tried viewing the swf file in the external movie player, but nothing seems to improve it.
Is this lack of smoothness a basic problem in Flash with moving objects, or is it something to do with my Flash preferences, or even my computer settings?  What are the standard ways to try and increase smoothness of playback in Flash?.
    Thanks for any help!

Ah, progress - you were right!  I needed to increase frame rate to maximum 120 to get close to what I'm after.  There's still the appearance of 'multiple fames' as the swift enters the stage - perhaps this is an optical thing? - but it is pretty smooth thereafter.

  • Choppy Flash Playback on MacBook Pro 15"

    Hi everyone!
We're having problems on two brand new MacBook Pros with Flash presentations. Basically, when you play a Flash movie on these devices the playback stutters, gets choppy (audio is almost unbearable), and is otherwise unusable at all. Has anyone else experienced this? The same presentations work fine on older G4 PowerBooks. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

I finally figured this out. It was the version our client embedded into the movie. Turns out it was all rolled into one. newer Flash player bundling worked fine!

  • Elements 3.0.2 jumpy video playback in monitor

i am using premiere elements 3.0.2 and get really bad jumpy video in the monitor window. this is for very short mpeg4 clips that play beautifully in other media players on my laptop e.g. zune software - so this is NOT a computer hardware issue.
i am using an xacti camera that shoots 720p hd at 30fps and i have set all the project settings correctly - i am shooting 720p at a high bit rate.
any clues on what is causing the jumpiness?
    thanks
    andrew

i rendered a section of the timeline using the enter key - that gave me smooth playback. it's disappointing that premiere 3 wont play mpeg4 hd smoothly without this.
next i outputed the whole project to mp2. i am not clear why it wouldn't allow me to output to an mp4 hd format. what i am finding is that this software has tons of limitations with respect to editing hd
    in mp4.
any clues on whether 7.0 is improved in this department?

  • Problems with Encore CS4 Flash Playback in webbrowsers

Here's my problem. I made a great DVD I was hoping to show online.
There are several options when I export.
You have export to flv or f4v. I'm not really sure what the difference is but I tried both. When I export to f4v I great great playback in firefox and new versions of IE...but older versions don't play.
When I export to flv I get choppy, unwatchable playback from all browsers. Even when I set the quality to low, the video is still crystal clear, almost like this option does nothing at all.
I was thinking maybe I could somehow compress the flv after it exports, or even hack the f4v to play in old versions of ie but I have no idea how to do either one!
These are both streamed btw. I know I saw that you can throw it up onto playstream and thats supposed to help playback, but my company doesn't want to pay for it.
Am I missing something? I'm under a really tight timeframe to have this stuff finished. Please help!
    Erik

FLV and F4V use different codecs for Flash video. H.264 in case of F4V and On2 VP6 for FLV. There's a difference of bitrate between different quality presets. You can check the bitrates of files generated using some tool. Your video might be very static to feel the different be the two quality settings.
F4V is the new format and need a newer version of Flash Player. Please update your Flash player and try again to play the F4V files.
Playstream doesnt support F4V format. You can only export FLV files to Playstream.
It might also be an issue of low bandwidth while playing a streaming video. Are you playing is locally or from a web server.

  • Flash playback affected when offscreen?

I have an HTML page that has an embeded Flash header at the top of it with a looping animation and audio.
When I scroll the HTML window, and the Flash header goes offscreen, I notice the looping audio starts playing back erradically.  Even when I scroll the window back so the header is visible again, I notice that even the animation itself appears paused for a moment before it begins playing again.
Is this a known thing with embedded Flash?... that if offscreen, the playback is inconsistent?
    Any way around this?
Also, I'm still wanting to have some sort of looping audio (ambient series of sounds) playing in the background.  Currently, I tried just having it as a looping section of the Flash timeline, which works... until the Flash movie goes offscreen.  Is there a better way to do it?

Wow. 110 people had a look at this (as of this date) and nobody had an answer!

  • Best settings for Flash playback on Website

    Hello,
    1. Whats the Best Settings for Quality and Fast loading for Video playback of Flash Video??
Website features a :30 Second TV Commercial, takes too long for website to load. any Tips to get it to load FAST but have GREAT Looking Video
    Quality.
    Thanks a lot
    Joe

Best thing is to use the Adobe Media Encoder bundled with Flash CS4. Play with the settings until you get the optimum settings and the import the .flv to the stage. Then publish the movie "best".

  • Flash Playback Issues (atypical problem)

    Equipment/Software:
    - Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina
    - Mavericks 10.9
    - Safari 7
    - Flash 13
    - All updates installed (OS X + software)
    Playback Issue:
Flash videos begin normally, but then the CPU jumps to about 110% within the first 10 seconds or so. After the CPU jump, video playback begins to stutter severely, making the content unwatchable. Audio playback doesn't appear to be affected. When the CPU jumps and the video begins to stutter, the webpage often freezes and I have to quit Flash via Activity Monitor to regain control (i.e., scrolling, clicking, etc.). This happens across browsers (Safari, Firefox, Chrome), although I use Safari almost exclusively.
This only affects some Flash videos, but not all of them. I have no idea why. The problematic videos play fine on my desktop PC, so it's not a problem with the website.
Perhaps this is a second problem, but I'm also unable to watch some Flash-based streams in fullscreen mode. When I click fullscreen, the video size remains the same, but it moves to the top-left corner of the screen while everything else turns to white. Again, on my desktop PC, I do not experience this issue at all; the exact same stream will adjust to fullscreen mode without issue. I have a 27" monitor on my desktop PC and a retina screen on my Macbook Pro.
    Attempted Solutions (Failed):
    - Uninstalling/reinstalling Flash dozens of times
    - Reset Safari
    - Clear PRAM
    - Repair Disk Permissions
    - Praying to non-existent deity
Something so simple effectively renders 70% of the internet useless. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello jferreir,
It sounds like you are unable to watch streaming flash based video in Safari despite some great troubleshooting. I would next use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve the issue:
