Jumpy playback in CS3

Was a fix ever found for this? I did a search and found a mountain of posts all over, but no solution.
Everything worked fine here until I upgraded my video card to a GeForce 7600 GS now the playback window is jerky.
Tried re-installing, changing the pagefile to none, then to one, then back to two as Microsoft recommends. The computer partition it's on is only used for video editing, only loaded with Adobe software (plus stuff like Nero) and isn't connected to the net.
AE CS4 runs fine, and I've just re-installed Premiere Pro 2 which runs fine, but Premiere CS3 is still jumpy...

Why would you assume I have only one hard drive?
On the machine I have in question I have 5 internal hard drives, two in RAID 0, with several tetrabytes of memory. Drive 0 has 3 boot partitions: music / video / intenet & everything else. All data is spread across the other drives, like sound on Drive 1, video on Drive 2, video render files Drive 3, etc.
I've been using Premiere for over 10 years. Not exactly a noob. Everything works fine here, and has been on this machine for 2 years, except for Premiere CS3...
I take it your response means you never got to the bottom of the problem of the CS3 memory leak..?

  • Dropped frames - jumpy playback

I just moved an old FCP3 project to an external drive and opened the project in FCP5. I'm getting dropped frames and generally jumpy playback in the canvas. This may have nothing to do with FCP3 > FCP5 conversion- just thought I'd mention it. Perhaps just a simple oversight in one of my settings. Any ideas would be extremely helpful.

    #12 Dropped frames on capture/playback
    Shane's Stock Answer #12:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58640
    1) Do not capture to your main system drive. Since it is busy reading the operating system and application files, it will intermittently drop frames during capture.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
    http://www.pistolerapost.com/viewing/virexhalt.zip
    3) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
    4) Trash the FCP preference files. Use FCP Rescue available here:

  • Jumpy playback on laptops

I've been having trouble with jumpy playback on different laptops. I tried lowering the bit rate but it didn't help.
I'm transfering an hour and a half DV footage to DVD.

    Welcome to the boards
Which laptops and which version of DVD SP and which computer do you have?
What bit rates did you use, did you encode outside of DVD SP?
    dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_3.php
    dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php
Also check your brand of media.
Some software players behave inconsistently, in fact I have now found some combinations of DVD SP and Apple DVD Player which will stutter. skip and stall when playing back from the Hard Drives depending on which version of DVD SP I have used and other issues.
    But in general
    1.) Lower bit rates
    2.) AC3 the audio
    3.) Good brands of media
would be three of the first things to look at (also DVD drives can get dirty go bad.)
Do the DVDs play properly on standalone real DVD Players?

  • Jumpy playback with subtitles ?!

    Hi There,
I'm experiencing jittery / jumpy playback of my track with subtitles. My project has a coupe of tracks but only one has subtitles. I burned a test disk and found that on my Powerbook and DVD&TV set, they all play fine, but on a PC the subtitled track plays jittery (the others are fine).
In DVDSP simulation mode I get the same result. It's almost as if the track hesitates then jumps just before a new subtitle... especially if there is a lot of movement in the image. Playing the track from the DVDSP timeline does the same thing, but not as bad.
    Any suggestions or solutions? Please?
    Peter

    hi peter
the problem of jittering happens most of times when we dont give
any stroke or outline to the texts.
so try these values for your subtitles
    text colour white- opacity 15
    outline 1-black-opacity 15
    outline 2-black-opacity 15
try also with bold fonts and with bigger size .

  • Jumpy playback in iMovie since i started importing HD videos from my 4s iphone

I am getting poor jumpy playback with my 4s iphone vides in iMovie. Is this because I have too many projests going or too many clips? I have a macbook pro with 4 gigs ram and 95 gigs left on my HD.

What might be happening is you might need to Optimize the Video to Full Size. Use the File Menu > Optimize > Full Size for each of the video clips in your iPhoto Videos folder inside of the iMovie Events Library. That should trigger iMovie to recognize the original size/resolution of the video clips and then enable the HD size output in the iMovie Share Menu.

  • Jumpy playback on 30" display

Following the release of CS3, I upgraded my G5 to a Mac Pro, with two xNVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics cards. Along with my 23" cinemay display, I connected a new 30" Apple HD display. It is a beautiful thing, until I try to play movies or shows purchased from (and played on) iTunes. Playback is jumpy -- completely robotic, as if it is constantly stopping, then skipping a frame. This only happens during full-screen playback in iTunes.
Full-screen movies playing from the DVD Player or VLC are fine.
Any help will be much appreciated -- thanks --

    Hi-
Appears to be a problem in the iTunes software. I don't know if it would help, and there aren't any reports of anyone trying it, but sometimes software reinstall fixes system bugs ( if the problem is in ones system).
Did a search, and found that you aren't alone (kinda' counters the "system problem" theory).
You might have a look and see if any of the "fixes", a few have reported, apply to you:

  • Diminished color quality and jumpy image Adobe CS3 Premiere to Encore DVD

While assembling and editing my individual scenes in Adobe Premiere Pro, and burning to DVD through Adobe Encore. I've experienced the following obstacles:
    1.) diminished color quality
2.) jumpy image (it seems to skip just slightly, hard for some people to notice..but I do)
3.) DVD only plays in 1 of 2 DVD players (both are manufactured by Sony)
My encoding is set to NTSC High Quality, but I see no difference when the default NTSC  Medium Quality is selected. I still have the same results (1-3). The Video Codec is listed as MainConcept MPEG Video. I am not provided with an option to select another, I suspect this could be an issue. Please advise.
My biggest concerns are 1 & 2. Please advise on how to address. I am using CS3.
    Thanks!

  • Jumpy playback from image sequences rendered in Apple Prores and then exported to h264

I will start by saying I have been using FCP since 1.0 and am in no way new to this software, but this issue has me going crazy.
    First the Specs:
MacPro 2 x 2.66 Quad cor Intel Xeon
    16 gig Ram
    OS 10.9.2
FCP 7.0.3 (sorry but I am not a fan of FCP10 at all)
In other words, a beast of a system that has played back everything I have ever built on it for years until now. So now for the issue: I work with an amazing 3D Max builder and we have created a building animation exported from that program into and image sequence ( we have tried JPG, TGA and PNG still all with the same effect). I open Quicktime 7 Pro, build the image sequence, save as .mov, import into FCP and drop it into my 1080p30 Apple Prores (HQ ... we also tried SQ) timelines. The timeline renders perfectly and I can play the video perfectly through my system out of Firewire 800 to my Motu V4HD device which then converts the signal to HDMI to my 55" LED TV. The video and playback is perfect.... until:
If I try to play back the same exact time line into an exported video file, the file will play back with random jumpyness in it. I say random since you can play it back 10 times and it will hiccup during playback at different spots in the video. If you review every frame in the file though using Quicktime 10, 7 or VLC viewer, every frame is perfect. So, it must be the data rate right? Wrong. I have exported now to H264 MP4, M4V, MOV , ect, etc at different data rates from 4mb to 40 mb per second. They all have the same randow jumpyness to it. So it must be my computer right? Nope. I have a Macbook pro that is more powerful than this machine and I rebuild the file using the same method (something I have done a thousand times before) and the exported file does the same thing on that machine. I had my friend do it on his machine... same thing. ERRRR....
We have even tried using After Effects and Premier to the same result. Rendered it straight from Quicktime Pro, same. Rendered it to 720p30, same. Render it to 24fps, same. I had another editor render it using whatever methods he wanted to use... same. Tried Compressor, SAME.  Tried Adobe Media Encoder, SAME......We even, god forbid, used a PC running Premier and built the image sequence and rendered to h264 at 30fps, 5mbs.... @#$@#$ SAME!
We just remade the 3D Studio Max export into a 60fps animation since I thought that the individual frames we appearing too far apart and thus causing the jumpyness. That was causing the playback of the upclose objects flying across the screen fast to appear jittery, but not the random playback jumps. The 60fps did smooth out the animation greatly during fast flybys, but the playback jumps are still there in all players, QT, VLC, the web, etc.
I was starting to think this issue is realted to Mavericks, but since the PC did the same thing that is not it either. I have linked a sample of the clip below exported to 720p30, 25mbs... something that is much smaller than the original and should playback smooth very easily on any of my systems.
FYI: I have now opened numerous projects I have edited over the last few years and noticed that all of them are now jumpy, so this isn't just an image sequence issue. While the other projects don't use image sequences and instead are shot footage edited together, there is still the random jump (far less than the image sequence as you will see) but they are now there... ***? I have cleared preferences in FCP which helps for a short period of time, but once exported I get the same glitch.
As I said... I am stumped... ANYONE have ideas for me to try?
Here is a sample file for you all to see and please tell me if anyone does not see the issue after playing it several times in a row.
    www.media3lv.com/switch/NORTH-sample-720p30_25mb-sec.zip
One last thing to note... my main goal for these videos is YouTube or Vimeo playback via our company website. I have a few other animations online right now using YouTube and the problem is also showing there. At first I thought it was just my videos, but I have looked at numerous YouTube videos now showing 3D animation and alot of them are jumpy.
    www.supernap.com/supernap-building-design.html
    www.supernap.com/supernap-tscif-exchange.html
These don't show the issue as bad since the camera fly is much slower, but why is this occuring and is it coming from my source, or is this a known youtube issue? I can program this using out own modules, but YouTube and Vimeo allow for multiple resolutions and a checker script which makes it easier to share over all devices at all quality up to 1080p.
    Advice is welcome and appreciated?

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.

  • Jumpy playback on Vista

A week or two ago, I got home from work, opened up iTunes to listen to some music, and the blayback is INCREDIBLY jumpy. It's to the point where it's unlistenable.
I called Apple Support, who weren't the greatest deal of help, and they told me to uninstall iTunes, Bonjour and Apple Mobile Device Service or whatever, then reinstall the package of all 3.
Well, I did that before they even told me that, and they insisted I try again... So I did, and it's still knackered... Any suggestions? It's an absolute pain!!!

  • Jumpy playback with full res HD

I am trying to edit full res HD(1920x1080, 4:2:2). When i am playing the clip in the viewer or the timeline it is real jumpy. Is this a hard drive performance issue? or is it something other then that.

How much faster do you thng 2 750gigs in a raid 0 setup be?
Depends on the Raid controller and the type of drives you have. I have a CalDigit S2VR Duo and can get 148MB/s Raid 0 empty, and 102MB/s 90% full. That is eSATA, and that is not recommended for uncompressed HD. DVCPRO HD, HDV, uncompressed SD, yes. You can purchase eSATA enclosures from OWC or Sonnet and get about that....85-105MB/s. But that doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room. Uncompressed HD requires a 4 drive SATA Raid or better for smooth playback.

  • Jumpy playback?

I was wondering... Has anyone else been experiencing problems with playback in iTunes? I have a ton of mp4 videos that I try to play using the video player in iTunes, and it's pretty painful to try and watch... It pauses every second or so, and skips sections of video as it tries to catch up. It's somewhat better playing them in Quicktime. Song playback in iTunes has been kind of jumpy as well. The mpeg files I have for the movies play great in Windows Media Player though. My computer runs extremely well in every other application, so I was wondering if there was a known bug for iTunes playback in Vista or if there was some setting I was overlooking.

I can't help myself, but have you worked through the article on video playback performance?

  • Having jumpy playback with 60p footage exported to 30p. Pans are worst.

We recently shot a commercial on the Sony FS700 in the native AVCHD codec at 60p. We originally intended to slow the footage down to 30 but the client decided the natural speed worked better. So we simply cut the spot in a 30p sequence and exported. The playback is VERY jittery/jumpy with any vertical lines in the picture, which is very pronounced in any pans. We then cut it in a 60p timeline and exported 60p then converted to 30p, same issue. I did have frame blend on every export.
Exporting 60i does help tremendously, some stations won't accept the 60i file however which sticks us with 30p files which have the issue. The XDCAM 1080 60i file is perfect, however ProRes 30p is not.
    Any ideas on this?

Believe it or not, the Import method can sometimes affect playback. Be sure to copy the entire AVCHD folder structure over from SD card to hard drive, unmodified, then in Premiere use the "Media Browser" to import your clips for best results. A definite plus for any spanned clips for sure, also helps with some audio issues.
Also, my understanding of the Interpret Footage option was that if you put 60p footage into a 30p sequence, and also used "Interpret As 29.97" then the footage ought to be playing back at 50% slow motion speed. Something seems off here.
EDIT: Or maybe that's what you meant, the slowmo is perfect?

  • Jumpy Playback in Elements 9

    Hi,
I've been working with Premiere Elements 9 for a couple of months now and one problem I am continually running into is a jumpy, or skippy, playback.  When the video is initially brought into the software, it seems ok, although not quite as smooth as when veiwed on the camera.  Once I begin to work with it (cut, stabilize, lenghten/shorten time frame, etc) the play back starts to skip, even after rendering.  This is a huge problem for me because my main concern is being able to pull the smoother clips from the videos, as well as having a stabilization that works well enough to finish it off and give me a very smooth product. I can't tell which part of the video is orignially jumpy and which part is jumpy because of my playback issue.  We are recording in full HD 1920 x 1080 60p/i, and noticed that Adobe doesn't have this option.  We thought that might be the problem, so we have also tried full HD 1920x1080 24p, but it didn't seem to help.
So, I guess I have a couple of questions:
    1) Could my computer be causing the problem of a skippy playback? Do I need a faster video card?
    2) How well does the stabiliation work?  Can I expect that the oringinally jumpy clips can be made smooth with this software?
    Thanks for your help!
    Dani

Just a little correction, as I know what Steve meant with:
    Premiere Elements CS5
Should be Premiere Pro CS 5, or 5.5 (current version). PrPro will allow you to edit that footage smoothly, depending on your CPU - number of cores is as important as speed, and like Steve, I recommend an i7 for that task.
If you DID go to PrPro CS 5.5, you can also benefit from one of the certified nVidia CUDA cards, through PrPro CS 5.5's MPE (Mercury Playback Engine). This ARTICLE will give you more info, should you go that route.
Do note that PrPro CS 5.5 does not have a Stabilization Effect, like PrE does. Many find that ProDAD's Mercalli works quite well, while others like to use the Stabilization in Adobe After Effects (separate program, but included in many of the CS 5.5 suites).
    Good luck,

  • Flash Media player - mp3 playback using CS3

I have an audio clip which is in MP3. It is about 7:30 min:sec in length consisting of 10 tracks each a teaser clip lasting from 30 to 50 seconds each with a brief fade out / fade in between each track. Each track has a song name. Here is what I would like to design a page as follows:
As each track is played I would like to show the viewer the name of the song. It could be a simple animation where the name is visible during the duration of the clip. The text title could also be static for all simplistic purpose. And so the same for rest of the tracks.
The background image of the page would be a static JPEG image.
Any ideas as how to approach this using CS3 Flash and Dreamweaver.
    thank you.
If the above seems convoluted, I would also would like to know how to setup a media player with individual tracks (each separate MP3 teaser), showing the track titles.
    thank you
    Subha

Does each track have an ID3 tag? Probably not I think you can only have 1 per mp3.  You could splice the mp3 into 10 seperate mp3's, edit in ID3 tags (ID3 editors are available for free just do a search)and use actionscript to extract the tag info and print in a textfield.
