Junk filter poorly working

My mac mail spam filter barely seems to work. Maybe 20% get stopped, tops. Suggestions?

You’re welcome.
I don't see how any of these would interfere.
Well, if a message is moved to another folder by a rule, that message won’t be processed by the junk filter...
Of course the e-mail from apple telling me that you had posted
on this thread did get sent to junk!
And was it marked as junk? Does it have a “Mail thinks this message is Junk Mail” banner?
The junk filter database may have become corrupt or contain erroneous information as a result of you having mistakenly marked messages as either Junk or Not Junk. Have you tried resetting it (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset)?

  • Junk filter is not working properly

I have been using the Junk mail filter successfully for years. Lately Mail is marking messages as Junk but still leaving some of them in my Inbox, though it is supposed to send all junk to the Junk mailbox. Also it is sending some messages to the Junk mailbox, even when they are in my Address Book and even some emails from Apple and .Mac. Why is this happening?

Hi, I'm having the same problem! If I send myself a test message it comes back as junk and my name is in my address book. I have my preferences set for anyone who is in my address book is ok and the rest is junk.
I read this and did all that was written below yet my mail program still thinks my own test message is junk. Does anyone have another suggestion?
    This forum is awesome, thanks.
    Martha
Why? The junk filter itself knows nothing about
Apple. When you set up Mail anew, there is only one
custom rule called “News From Apple” that, if active,
would prevent those messages from being marked as
junk. If you’ve removed or disabled that rule (I
have), then messages coming from Apple are treated
like messages coming from anyone else, as it should
    be.
Or is it because "Apple Discussion Forums" isn't in
    my address book?
Well, that’s one possibility. Another is that the
junk filter still isn’t working properly, and the
more thorough cleanup procedure I mentioned in my
    previous post may be necessary.
Note also that having Sender of message is in my
Previous Recipients OFF in Preferences > Junk
Mail may contribute to some messages being
    incorrectly marked as junk.
The junk filter cleanup procedure, in case you want
to try it, would be as follows:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash.
This file stores information about what does and
doesn’t constitute junk, and allows the junk filter
to learn. Deleting this file is what Preferences >
Junk Mail > Reset does. The file was called
LSMMap in early versions of Mail; delete that
as well if you see it.
    4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the
Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of
messages that have been marked as junk, either
automatically by the junk filter or manually by the
    user.
    5. Locate MessageRules.plist and/or
MessageSorting.plist and move it to the
Desktop. The former is used by Mail 2.x, the latter
by Mail 1.x. This is where Mail stores all the rules,
including the rule that governs what the junk filter
does. There is probably also a
    MessageRules.plist.backup and/or
    MessageSorting.plist.backup file there; move
    it to the Desktop too.
    6. Look for the account folders. The name of each
account folder starts with the account type (POP,
IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the
incoming mail server. Open each of the account
    folders, locate the Junk.mbox or
Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to
    the Trash if present.
    7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any
Junk.mbox mailboxes there (their name may
include the account name in parenthesis), and move
    them to the Trash.
Note: Messages in Junk mailboxes with an
.mbox suffix are stored locally and will be
lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If
there is a chance that you have legit messages there
that you want to preserve, either move the messages
to another mailbox in Mail first, or move
Junk.mbox to the Desktop (to be imported back
later) instead of to the Trash. Junk mailboxes with
an .imapmbox suffix aren’t a concern because
they are stored on the server and Mail will rebuild
    them automatically.
    8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file,
the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to
either tell Mail to go offline immediately after
opening it, or shut down the Internet connection
before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading
anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled
    again.
    9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail,
enable junk filtering, and configure it however you
    wish.
    10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don’t have
any rules you’d like to preserve or recreating them
is not a daunting task, just trash the rules files
that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the
~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home
folder. You can easily locate any of the folders
referred to in this post by copying the folder path
here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder,
and pasting the folder path there.

  • Junk mail filter doesnt work.. what do I do?

Back when I was in 10.3.9, I was using Mail ever since we got this G5.. but then the Junk mail filter stopped working and Mail always hung whenever I was sent an EPS graphic.. so I said screw this and moved to Entourage. Been using that, but the Junk mail filter in THAT has stopped working.. and its annoying me. So.. I recently upgraded to 10.4.7 (now to .8) and I figured I would give Mail a try again. So, I load it up, it moves all my mail and accounts over.. fine. But the junk mail filter still seems to not be able to recognize all the spam crap I get as junk mail. What do I do?

    Try this.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    Deselect "Enable junk mail filtering".
    Quit and re-launch the Mail.app.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
Reselect "Enable junk mail filtering" and then select the Reset button at the bottom of the Junk Mail preferences window to completely reset the Junk Mail "learned" settings.
You can leave Junk Mail set to automatic when doing so. Using the Reset feature should work and the filter must be retrained but the filter learns quickly or should when working properly.
Regarding EPS graphic files, these have been known to cause problems with the Mail.app since the Mail.app displays all image/photo and single page PDF attachments inline or viewed in place within the body of the message which cannot be turned off.
If you receive EPS graphic files on a regular basis, take a look at Mail Attachments Iconizer.

  • Junk filter exceptions don't work

I'm using Mail 3.1 and notified that the junk filter doesn't work correctly. Have enabled junk filtering and selected the following exceptions:
    - Sender of message is in my Address Book
    - Sender of message is in my Previous Recipients
    - Message is addressed using my full name
Well it seems to be that the first one doesn't work. 8 of 10 Emails that I receive are marked as SPAM although the Sender is in my Address Book!
Somebody else with the same problems?
    Thanks

To turn off "Message is addressed using my full name" doesn't help Will turn off the filter now...

  • Mail refuses to accept any mails if i turn spam/junk filter on! Why?

Seems like something is wrong with my spam/junk filter.
Im running a mac os x server 10.6.2. By the look of it the server tries to speak with something on port 10024 but gets no contact which makes it stop any e-mails.
Someone made a suggestion that Amivis might be turned off but when reading the docs i found no additional information on how to turn it off besides using the enable buttons in Server Admin.
    Any help is welcome!

May I ask why? Have you learned that that specific problem is solved in a pre-release version? So far I've upgraded once on your advice, now I've upgraded again to 31. Problem's still there. Unless I'm told that the problem's been solved for sure in a latter version, I'm not going to upgrade because sometimes the upgrades bring problems w/them for a low tech user. I don't want to chat, etc., I just want to be able to send and receive e-mails.
I'm still working with the security software people re: some continuing issues w/FF.
I'd like to spend more time doing my work, or communicating w/friends, not dealing w/software problems.
Is there anyway of my finding out what, if any update, includes whatever is needed to solve my specific problem? I use Win7 Pro, SP1, 3.40 Gz processor, 3.19 Gb usable RAM, 64 bit OS. I don't know what other information is needed.

  • My junk filter has too many holes!

My junk mail preferences are set to only accept mail from addresses in my address book. The junk filter catches about 100 pieces of junk per day, but I still get about 15 junk messages daily in my Inbox. Is this normal? How can I get it to work more effectively?

You are receiving 100 pieces of junk mail per day with the same email account?
If so, have you used this email address publicly for any reason such as when making an online purchase or for website access if required, etc.?
In addition, do you automatically render all HTML received?
The Junk Mail filter learns in the same way regardless if set to Training or Automatic. The only difference between Training and Automatic is when set to Automatic, all messages marked as Junk are moved to the account's Junk mailbox instead of remaining in the account's Inbox mailbox and the Junk filter continues to learn (or should) when set to Automatic if working properly.
A problem is spammers are constantly changing/tweaking their methods to bypass spam filters at the incoming mail server for an account and with an email client such as the Mail.app so spam filters are in a constant catch-up mode.

  • Dysfunctional junk filter in Tiger Mail

I have three Macs (G5, G4, G3 iMac) all running the most recent, fully-patched version of OX X 10.4. All three machines are synchronized using .Mac sync, and I have the same account on all three machines.
About a month ago, two of the machines' junk filters simultaneously stopped working entirely (IIRC, this was after I had to reset .mac syncing due to some inconsistency). In other words, Mail on both machines was failing to identify any mail as junk. I tried resetting the junk filters on both machines, put them in training mode, trained them over several hundred junk mail messages, to no avail. Neither machine was flagging any mail whatsoever as junk.
Last night, as an experiment, I copied the file ~/library/com.apple.mail.plist from the machine (the G5) that was still filtering mail properly to the iMac (Mail wasn't running on either machine at the time I did the copy). Unfortunately, this fix seemed to have no effect, and worse, after the next sync, the one working machine no longer filtered mail properly! So now none of the three machines is filtering junk. But at least it seems clear that com.apple.mail.plist is in fact the file responsible for junk filtering, despite its small size (~16k). And all other filters (I use about 20 filters) seem to be working properly.
And, to make matters even worse, I restored the aforementioned file from yesterday's backup (you have no idea how anal I am about backups; most days I get three complete backups of my home directory), but that didn't help either! It seems like whatever caused the problem in the first two machines has spread to the one remaining machine, and now I can't even restore things to the (sort of barely functional) state they were in yesterday, before I replaced the bad preference files with what I thought was a working version of the mail preferences file.
Anyone have any ideas how to remedy this lamentable situation?

Dan you were right. I had a spam message from one gmail accounts and it did not have the Junk brown bar but then I trained as spam and it then put the junk brown bar on the email. So it is seeing the spamsieve the same as server-side spam.
All that's going on here is that when you train a message as spam, SpamSieve tells Mail that it's spam. SpamSieve has always done this so that (a) Mail hides the images for spam messages to protect you, and (b) Mail's own junk filter stays up-to-date in case you ever want to use it. The difference with Mavericks is that Apple Mail now shows more of its own junk filter user interface when it's turned off. You should ignore this if you're using SpamSieve.

  • Junk filter drives me cazy

    Hi
Junk filter seems unable to remember messages that i mark as not junk. a message from the same source the next day will once again have to be marked not junk! v strange. Also all my sent messages seem to be marked as junk. Has the filtering system got confused - do i need to start again? Unfortunately I have a great many rules set up under advanced.
    any help appreciated

    You’re welcome.
don't quite get why enabling the functions built into the
software to enhance filtering makes me 'one of those people..'
Not sure what you mean. What functions have you enabled to “enhance filtering”? It’s messing with the junk filter settings without fully understanding how the junk filter works that a lot of people do but shouldn’t, then wonder why the junk filter doesn’t work properly. In particular, it doesn’t make sense having “a great many rules set up under advanced”...
does the use of rules confuse the filtering mechanism?
If you do it wrong, yes, of course. More specific info about what exactly is it that you’ve done would be necessary if you want a more specific answer...
Is this a known fault with the software?
No. It’s a fault of the (lack of) documentation, which doesn’t properly explain how the junk filter works, and of the people that make wrong assumptions about how it works, then try to “improve” it based on those assumptions...

  • Email Filter Not Working

    Hi -
I am using a Blackberry Tour with the BES for Exchange v4.1 and cannot get the email filter to work as it did no the BB Curve.
I have set up the filter on the Tour itself, the Desktop Manager, and the BES server and nothing seems to work. The message arrives, but I do not get the Level 1 ringtone assigned, nor do I get the high importance assigned.
The only thing I may be doing wrong that I can think of is I am filtering on the sent from only and leaving the sent to field blank.
Does anyone have this working on tour?
It is really important for me to ensure I get woken up when a message from my IT Systems Monitoring system comes in at 2AM in the morning.
    Thanks!

There is a setting somewhere that refuses to mark as junk any email that uses your real name as part of the address. In the settings for Mail under Junk Mail, the setting is entitled:
"Message is addressed using my full name."
I assume this means that emails that look like:
         [email protected]
can be marked as junk, but not email addressed to (something like):
         Fred Smith <[email protected]>
This helped, although I've never been exactly sure how the junk filters work.
Another solution is to select an email you consider junk, then go to rules, choose one, then press the + button and it automagically creates a rule to prevent that mail.
Sometimes it helps to removes some of the email address that gets blocked to make it less specific. For example filtering on:
         bla.com
    would block:
         [email protected]
         [email protected]
         [email protected]
         etc...

  • Earthlink pop mail and automatic junk filter

    hi everyone,
a little help here... i know there a ton of posts about this already, but none really address a pop mail account and a junk filter. i have my mac to automatically filter junk to a separate filter, but this doesn't translate to the iphone.
the auto filter works terrificly on the computer... any way to set it up on the iphone?

i know i can enable their spam filtering, but if using the mail app and earthlink's filtering, you can only check the mail caught in their through the web. that's why i like the mail app's junk filtering better. everything is all under one roof. they shouldn't have forgotten the auto junk filtering, if they were putting a mail app on the iphone.

So , you need to edit the page, then edit the contact list that you used, in the web part properties of the contact list, you will find Miscellaneous, then expand it and select ‘Server Render’ .
    I hope this helps.

  • Query level filter not working in Webi report

    Hi All,
I am using BOXI R3.1 (SP3), m facing one problem when refreshing Webi report on daily basis. I am using three query level filter as a prompt, but i checked one filter is not working then i need to reapply this filter and rest 2 filter is working fine.
Can anyone suggest me why problem is coming?
    Regards,

    Hi,
Prompts are interactive, and come from the query panel. Filters are not interactive, and are set on the report or block. There are also input controls, which are interactive filters
    1. Select the universe in the list of universes to open the Query Panel.
    2. Drag the Year object to the Result Objects pane.
    3. Drag the Number of Guests object to the Query Filters pane and create a report filter that restricts Number of Guests to greater than n.
    4. Click Combined Query.
The Combined Query pane appears in the bottom left of the Query panel with the two queries joined by UNION.
    5. Click on the second query and remove the Year and Number of Guests objects.
    6. Drag the Reservation Year object to the Result Objects pane.
    7. Drag the Future Guests object to the Query Filters pane and create a report filter that restricts the future guests to greater than n.
    8. Click Run Query.
