"Junk in compressed archive" or "No CPIO magic" - scratch RAMfs

Howdy folks,
I have picked up some inspiration as a result of my workplace recently deploying Dell Wyse clients running Windows Embedded Standard 7 with only MS Remote Desktop accessible. After about 6 months of using one of these devices I have harboured the desire to try and accomplish a similar result but by using Linux instead and after browsing the web for distros, I found you guys and Arch Linux.
To make learning easier on my part, I am adopting the "walk along the while line with the system" approach so I can understand what starts what.
So far, without any aid from anyone, I have managed to put together a working stripped down super-simple five-file, one-folder "first stage" PXELINUX bootloader configuration based on the 2015-02-01 ISO release with the total size just under 4MB. This is what is in my config file contains right now:
PROMPT 0
NOESCAPE 1
DEFAULT n
LABEL n
KERNEL vmlinuz
APPEND initrd=filesys.img ro
The end result I am trying to achieve is a reduced-UI graphical OS that is "in-RAM and only RAM" system (with all other storage devices ignored and not accessible or mounted) showing only these desktop icons (no right-click possible with no showing taskbars or the like) with the smallest footprint possible:
Remote Desktop
Sound
Display
Mouse
Keyboard
Sleep (suspend)
Restart
Turn Off
I am currently stuck at the ram disk image phase battling "Junk in compressed archive" or "No CPIO magic" errors.
Has anybody got any advice to share with this rather rusty codger? (I would appreciate that you would refer if possible to the Windows versions of any tools as I am not comfortable yet with the terminology differences)
Bless you all.
(Dear admins and moderators, if I have created this topic in the wrong place, I wish to offer my deepest apologies in advance.)

My apologies jasonwryan. I've edited it as instructed.
Yes, I am having a problem with the 2015-02-01 kernel returning either "Junk in compressed archive" or "No CPIO magic" with this at the end:
end Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
What I am trying to do is assemble a file system (init starting point and such) from a blank slate, not from a pre-built image. I'm using the GnuWin CPIO command-line archive utility to make the CPIO archive. Any idea on what I'm doing incorrectly?
Because I am doing this all in a VMware player virtual machine, I can't copy the entire kernel panic error.

    Where can I obtain a Directory 5.2 2004Q2 Compressed Archive?
    I cannot find it on the download site.

    I have the same problem. The patch is not applicable to compressed archive installation. By the way, would be possible to simply overwrite those files from the patch archive 115614-10? Any other dependency I have to take care.

  • Upgrading DS 5.2 - when compressed archive installation method was used

    I've tried upgrading Directory Server with patch 2 (Patch-ID# 115614-10), but the patchadd command fails with this error:
    One or more patch packages included in
    115614-10 are not installed on this system.
    Originally, I installed DS 5.2 using the compressed archive installation method. Does this prevent patching the DS software? Or is there another patch available for this type of installation?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks, Greg

  • Old compressed archived files

    I have these compressed archived files downloaded in 2001 on OS 9 and now I can't access them on OS X.  The extensions of these files get changed to .img and I can't even see exactly what format they were in originally.  When I double click on them I get a warning that says 'The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason: not recognized'
    Is there anyway for me to see them in the original extension? Thanks!

    You should be able to open .img files.  At least I can on my 10.6.5 system.
    Just to prove it I mounted my old backup of OS9 which had a bunch of .img files.  I chose some at random and had no problem expaning and mounting them exactly like .dmg's.  The app to open these files are, like .dmg's, DiskImageMounter in /Library/Coreservices.  So is that what you have as the default app for opening .img files?  If not do a Finder get info on one of the .dmg's and chane (all) that file to Open with DiskImageMounter in /Library/CoreServices.
    Some of them I can but very few.. DiskImageMounter is the default app when I tried to open them yes. Thanks!

  • 2.6.26: broken padding, no cpio magic, crc error

    My new computer (about 2 weeks old) started freezing out of nowhere the other day right after I installed flashplayer-beta and kernel 2.6.26.
    I hard-rebooted it yesterday after this happened and it would only panic on boot. There were three errors at the point where the real kernel takes over: broken padding, no cpio magic, and crc error. I reinstalled/Syu-ed using my old Voodoo disc (for some reason, the Overlord disc doesn't work for me... computer reboots) and rebooted.
    I've had to do that twice so far. That leads me to believe that it may be a kernel/initrd problem, but there's a possiblity that it may be RAM-related. My motherboard and RAM are *slightly* incompatible and I've received errors on memtest #7 as a result. I RMA-ed the memory today, so we'll see how that goes once I receive the definitely-compatible sticks.
    Anyone else getting this error with the new kernel?

  • Junk name for archive file!

    Hi All,
    I have a bpel process with FTP adapter as the process initializer.
    The FTP adapter does the get operation. The read files are supposed to be archived. The FTP server is a unix machine.
    i am facing a problem while archiving! the file name of the archived files are all being assigned junk values - like
    --> 'LSoO7S4PZnqOCHSy2fovgg==_20101215_104859_0060'
    --> 'vcT89qBcHx3hEyHGHWS6ow==_20101215_122241_0017'
    It is suppose to look some thing like 'abcd_243.xml_20101215_104859_0060' or 'abcd_345.xml_20101215_122241_0017' (This is how it looks in case of file adapter
    This is an archived XML file.
    jca:operation -
    <jca:operation
    FileType="ascii"
    LogicalDirectory="rm_incoming_file"
    ActivationSpec="oracle.tip.adapter.ftp.inbound.FTPActivationSpec"
    LogicalArchiveDirectory="rm_success_file"
    DeleteFile="true"
    IncludeFiles="abcd_.*\.xml"
    PollingFrequency="10"
    MinimumAge="0"
    OpaqueSchema="false"
    UseRemoteArchive="true">
    </jca:operation>
    What could be the reason for this? how can i resolve this situation?
    Let me know if any more information is required.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roshan

    Hi Roshan
    You get these :
    --> 'LSoO7S4PZnqOCHSy2fovgg==_20101215_104859_0060'
    --> 'vcT89qBcHx3hEyHGHWS6ow==_20101215_122241_0017'
    This is because they are getting encrypted. You need to apply the latest 10.1.3.3.1 MLR # 19 in case you are on 10.1.3.3.0 patchset (or) 10.1.3.4 MLR # 9 in case you are on 10.1.3.4.0 patchset (or) 10.1.3.5.0 MLR # 2 in case you are on 10.1.3.5.0 patchset. Please refer otn.oracle.com to find their patch downloads.

    What are you using to compress your initramfs? There's really not much that can be done about errors like this if your initramfs is valid and the errors go away after a reboot.
    Ah... don't know Arch default I suppose...

  • Parameters used by Archive Utility to compress files

    Many of you will be aware that built into OS X is the Archive Utility which can create and de-compress compressed archives of files. The utility works well. It uses the 'ZipInfo' standard for archives although, it can create archives in other formats. Apple also provides equivalent commands for use in the Terminal (e.g. Zip, UnZip and Ditto).
    I have been trying to find out what Zip parameters are used when using Archive Utility in the Finder. The Zip standard has, for example, a range between fast but large archives to slow but small archives. Does anyone know what parameters are used by Archive Utility ? Even better, is there a way to change those parameters ?
    Many thanks.
    Garry B

    There really isn't a way to change the specifics of what the Finder does unless it allows you to do so (via preferences or plist file). The Finder uses something like ditto -c -k --sequesterRsrc --keepParent src_directory archive.zip
    There are many parameters for ditto and zip to allow for customization as needed.

  • Archive Log Compression

    Hi
    There is a feature that allows us to compress archive logs. This is set using "ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS enable;"
    What I need to know is
    1) Which versions of oracle supports this.
    2) Has anyone experienced any drawbacks using this.
    Thanks

    This is what I got back from ORACLE.
    Generic Note
    Hi,
    The archive log compression feature was withdrawn from the release before the oracle 10g production release.
    It may appear to function as expected, but it is not yet supported and is intentionally not documented.
    Bug 3464260 - ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS ENABLE/DISABLE IS MISSING IN 10G DOCS
    Status: 92 - Closed, Not a Bug
    - An Enhancement Request been created Bug 6780870 GENERATION OF COMPRESSED ARCHIVELOG FILES to ask
    if this functionality will be offered in a future release which is yet not been update by development..
    In other words, The SQL statement ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG COMPRESS enable is possible, but indeed
    currently unsupported and undocumented even in Oracle Database 11g
    Archive compression was a planned new feature for 10G, but unfortunately it was withdrawn and it is still
    not available in 11g .This feature is expected in future releases.
    Please let me know if that answers your questions .
    Regards,
    One more question.
    We are running windows, I know someone mentioned gzip for linux, can we use that for windows compresssion, or will winzip or winrar or any other compression tool work.
    Thanks

  • Recovering damaged ZIP archive

    I have a large (1.26GB) ZIP archive that I made some time ago and copied to DVD.
    Now when I try and unarchive it using Archive Utility it says 'Unable to unarchive. Error 1 (Operation not permitted.)'.
    Does anyone know how I can fix this?
    I've looked online for ZIP archive repair software that runs on OS X but can find nothing.

    I am trying to expand a Stuffit ZIP file I created of personal family images/information. I thought it was a good idea at the time (yes I could just shoot myself). All I did was compress it and it was saved on an external HD. Well sometime later (few months maybe years) I want to open it and use some info on it and I can't.
    I found some help stuff on this site for logging into Terminal. I got this when using Terminal after prompting the Error 1 - Operation Not Permitted. Read below and PLEASE (yes, please) help me figure out. I've tried some things from the list but since I don't know what I am doing I need mac geek assistance. I am partial geek, hehe. Thank you!

    bug reports using http://www.info-zip.org/zip-bug.html; see README for details.
    Usage: unzip [-Z] [-opts[modifiers]] file[.zip] [list] [-x xlist] [-d exdir]
    Default action is to extract files in list, except those in xlist, to exdir;
    file[.zip] may be a wildcard. -Z => ZipInfo mode ("unzip -Z" for usage).
    -p extract files to pipe, no messages -l list files (short format)
    -f freshen existing files, create none -t test compressed archive data
    -u update files, create if necessary -z display archive comment
    -x exclude files that follow (in xlist) -d extract files into exdir
    modifiers: -q quiet mode (-qq => quieter)
    -n never overwrite existing files -a auto-convert any text files
    -o overwrite files WITHOUT prompting -aa treat ALL files as text
    -j junk paths (do not make directories) -v be verbose/print version info
    -C match filenames case-insensitively -L make (some) names lowercase
    -X restore UID/GID info -V retain VMS version numbers
    -K keep setuid/setgid/tacky permissions -M pipe through "more" pager
    Examples (see unzip.txt for more info):
    unzip data1 -x joe => extract all files except joe from zipfile data1.zip
    unzip -p foo | more => send contents of foo.zip via pipe into program more
    unzip -fo foo ReadMe => quietly replace existing ReadMe if archive file newer
    -bash: Friends.zip: command not found
    [1]+ Exit 10 unzip -P Family

    Anyone know what to do next?
    Thanks!

  • PayloadZipBean - variable filename inside the archive

    Hi,
    I'm using the Adapter-Specific Message Properties in a sender fileadapter to determine the incoming filename, which has variable components (i.e. date and time). After changing the prefix and suffix in a Message-Mapping the new name is applied in a receiver fileadapter. The new name is now part of the payload in the tag <Filename>. The receiver fileadapter contains the PayloadZipBean to compress the output file, everything works fine.
    Now I want the file inside my compressed archive always to have the same name as my archive has. In Stefan Grube's blog about the PayloadZipBean I only found the possibility to choose a fix name by using the MessageTransformBean (name="file.txt").
    Example:
    1. variable input filename:                       IN_RNK_20080227_1006.txt
    2. filename after Message-Mapping:        OUT_RNK_20080227_1006.gz
    3. archive filename after receiver adapter: OUT_RNK_20080227_1006.gz
        filename inside the archive:                 MainDocument (this is the default (payload-name))
    I would like to name the file inside the archive OUT_RNK_20080227_1006, too.
    Question 1: Is there any possibility to read out the mapped <Filename>-tag from the payload to use it for the element inside my archive (File Name Scheme and Variable Substitution don't work when using Adapter-Specific Message Properties).
    Question 2: Is there a way to modify the name of the payload so that I can change "MainDocument" to "OUT_RNK_20080227_1006"?
    I'm on XI 3.0 - SP19.
    Many thanks,
    Ralph

I am using an recovery catalog, so should I be connected to the recovery catalog Or control file to do a cross check backup, also when it's doing the backup do u recon it can't fing archivelog in controlfile file as it's not done a resync, should I force it to do a resync after a backup then backup the archive logs??? I really don't want to bounce the db as it's 24/7
