Junk mail and spam - learning mode?

Have been receiving unsolicited stock picks and viagara offers and move them to junk email folder that I created. Someone mentioned on a forum that a .mail account has a learning mode to help filter spam. I can't locate it. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Look up the topic "Changing the junk mail filter" in Mail's Help to learn about Mail's built-in junk filter.

    Is there a way to block unwanted e-mails and spam on your mobile devices?

    This is generally handled by your e-mail provider, not your e-mail reader.
    For example, I use Gmail and it filters spam before it ever gets to my inbox. If something does get through, I can move it to the spam folder on my iPhone to report it as spam.

  • How do I send junk mail to spam on my iPad and iPhone?

    How do I get rid of junk mail. The more I unsubscribe the more I get.  Can you send to spam on iPhone or iPad?

    I suggest you rely on your email service provider to do that.  If you're not happy with your provider's filtering, Gmail has a good reputation for filtering spam.

  • (Junk-)Mail and setting up a new computer

    Hi all,
    Naturally, I do not very often replace my computer, but every time I need to set up a new computer I run into this issue with Mail.app which annoys me.
    I am a relatively heavy mail user (I have about 24.000 messages in my inbox on a gmail-account). I usually do not delete any mail, because I use my e-mail as my memory crutch for things past. However, if an e-mail is junk-mail, which I receive quite a bit, I delete it. To help me to sort the good from the bad, I use the Mail.app built-in junk mail control and generally, I am quite happy with it.
    But every time I need to set up a computer from scratch, the following happens:
    I set up Mail.app with my accounts.
    Then I set the Junk Mail preferences to: "Enable junk mail filtering", "When junk mail arrives: Move it to the Junk mailbox". I have my Mailbox Behaviors set to: "Store junk messages on server".
    Mail automatically moves tons of my legitimate old mail (this time more than 600 messages) to my gmail junk mail folder. That means I have to sift through the junk mail folder manually and pull out the legitimate mail while leaving the spam.
    This is a big problem for me, because potentially I could lose important older e-mails. I have my accounts set up as IMAP, thus the new machine will screw up my older machines, the iPhone and even the native gmail web-interface.
    My question: am I missing an "apply junk mail filter only to new incoming mail but leave my old mail alone"-button? Is there a work-around? Anyone else experiences this problem?
    All the best.

    Hi, Gustavo, and welcome to the Community,
    I know it will sound ridiculous, but if the new account was created using your e-mail address, change that account's password to take control of the account!  Remove any of your (or their) information - leave all profile settings as "blank" or "not specified."  I would recommend changing the passwords of your Skype account and your e-mail account as well, as proactive measures.
    Then, please report this incident to Skype Customer Service.  Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
    As you know you wish to contact Customer Service, skip past Step 2 of the instruction and proceed to Step 3, Continue Support Request.
    Best regards,
    Elaine

  • Apple deciding what is junk mail and creating folders on my Mac

    I am becoming far less enthused with Apple.  For Apple to be filtering my email, to decided what is OK for me read and what is not, Apple must read my email and decide for me like a Big Brother, reasoning "it's for my own good".
    Further Apple has demonstrated that not only can they direct where in my computer information is placed Apple can also create folders remotely in my MacIntosh computer as if Apple owned my computer, not me.
    My computer belongs to me, not Apple.  I decide what is SPAM and what is not.  I decide where information in placed not Apple.  I decide if a folder is created not Apple.
    With iCloud based email service Apple is not just coordinating  your email, Apple is deciding for you what is appropriate for you and where information is to be stored.  Its a small thing ownership, but its an important thing.  Good people died so we can have ownership.

    Reasoning that because someone else does something that makes everyone else doing it OK, seems a little weak in the unalienable rights department.
    I agree that if you like someone deciding for you what is good for you and what is not appropriate, that is your right to make that decision for you.  Neither you or Apple can assume that right for others without their consent.  Until the first part of April this year Apple did not make that decision for you.
    Has Apple asked you for your permission to read your email and decide/censor what you information you can store in your InBox and what you can not?
    More nonsense, Apple do not read your email, or add folders to your Mac, you are living a fantasy.
    And please note, you do NOT own OS X (which is what you are actually talking about) you have been granted a license to use it under Apples terms, if you don't like that the answer is clear.
    Here is an experiment to try. In Preferences: turn off Junk Mail.   Delete the Junk mailbox with in Mail.  In a few minutes, depending on your email traffic, Apple will recreate the Junk mailbox and place email in the newly create Junk mailbox.
    Who read the email to determine its junk?
    Who created the new Junk mailbox?
    If it wasn't you, it's either Apple or ghosts.  You decide.
    I have no intention of allowing your nonsense to affect me.
    Do it yourself.

  • TS2621 I can't seem  to see my junk mail or spam. How can I fix this ? Thanks G

    Nationally know firms are stating that their mail is being viewed as spam. How do I change me settings to view this mail and then correct the iPad to recognize the senders as legit?  TThanks

    Edit the contact and verify that the phone number is in a field named Mobile or iPhone. Sometime work or home is for email, not for phone numbers.

  • Missing Junk Mail and Reveal Triangles

    I'm trying to rebuild my Junk Mail box because it shows (in bold) the number of emails that come in but when you click on it to view them...there are no emails at all. I asked the MacFixit Forum how to rebuild my Junk Mail box and someone instructed to rebuild mail boxes, go to each mailbox and make sure that you click the reveal triangle if there's more than one account. Well the problem is...and didn't notice until now...I have no reveal triangles on my Inbox, Sent or Junk. I have them on the other mailboxes...so I can rebuild those by going to the top menu and pulling down to Rebuild. However, the Junk Mail box is greyed out so it cannot be clicked on. Moreover, my iBook that's running the same system Apple Mail...has triangles at Inbox, Sent, Trash, Junk, and any other folders that I have and I can see the Junk Mail...and I guess I hadn't noticed that mine on the iMac had disappeared. Anyone have any ideas how to get those back? Can I do anything like trash the .plist for Junk Mail in my Library? I'd just like to be able to see what comes into my Junk Folder before I trash it. Thanks a bunch.

    go to mail, select preferences, then go to the tab marked "junk mail"-
    click the radio button to "move it to the junk mailbox" and - voila! - your junk mail box
    is now visible again.
    (By the way, run your disk utility "repair permissions" and update your system to 10.5.4) - there are a couple of security fixes in that. Good luck, and hope that mail works for you now

  • Junk Mail and Outgoing Mail Folders

    Hello. I'm having trouble getting the Junk Mail folder to appear in the Mailbox pane. Can anyone offer any help on how to get these two mailboxes to appear in their original form? I know I can create folders myself, but there should be a way to get these original folders to appear with the icons. Thank you.

    What's happening is that Mail 2.0 behaves differently in this regard. Outbox is not shown unless there are sent messages that cannot be delivered. Mail would put them in Outbox, waiting for an opportunity to be sent. If sent, Outbox will disappear again the next time you launch Mail. It's probably similar for Junk, it's not shown until there's actually something in there, I'm not sure.
    The Junk icon you see in the Toolbar is not a mailbox. It's for manually marking mail as junk. You can see what a toolbar button does by hovering the mouse over it and waiting for a tooltip to appear.
    HTH.

  • Disable "Erase Junk Mail" and "Erase Deleted Items" Confirmation

    Does anyone know of a way to disable the confirmation dialoge box that appears when you right-click on an account in Mail 5.2 and select "Erase Junk Mail" or "Erase Deleted Items"? I've tried holding down Option and then selecting the item, but that doesn't remove the confirmation dialoge.
    I'd like to remove the confirmation dialoge completely as it just adds an extra step to something that is otherwise a quick operation to clear out junk mail.

    For what type of account - IMAP or POP?
    If a POP account, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
    Delete the Junk.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the account's Junk mailbox and all junk messages within.
    Launch Mail, and a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically within the account named folder when the next message received is automatically or manually marked as junk and moved to the account's Junk mailbox.
    Test if this resolve the problem.

  • I am getting bulk junk mail and the sender is using my email address. How do I stop it?

    They do not come into my main account, only through Thunderbird. I email myself sometimes, so I cannot make a filter to block myself.

    In most cases, someone has acquired your email address and is simply pasting it into the "From:" box when he builds and transmits his spam messages. He hasn't "hacked" your account, and he isn't sending from any equipment you have any control over. Changing passwords almost always has zero effect, since he isn't logging in as you. Have you ever found any of these messages in your Sent folder?
    You started a thread, then posted a reply in a separate thread. It's easy enough when you get an email notification of a reply to your thread, as the link in the email will bring you straight here.
    If you want to add to your own thread, look in your "profile" here on this forum to find a list of your previous postings. Or bookmark your thread in your browser.
    John99 has simply joined your two threads together to help anyone trying to help you.
    Since you have no control over what any 3rd party does on his own computer (or more likely, an "owned" or hijacked computer) you can't stop him.
    Anyway, why bother with a filter if the bad messages are being placed into Bulk or Spam? Your email provider's anti-spam system would appear to be doing its job. And if they aren't labelled as Spam or Junk, don't be afraid to do so yourself. Good spam and junk filtering is bit more sophisticated than just looking at the ostensible "From:" address; it will also be looking at IP addresses and checking against blacklists for known spam sources, and using heuristics to identify patterns.
    Plus what finitarry said. ;-)

  • Junk Mail and iphone

    Does anyone know if there are any junk email filters on/in the iphone settings? Or is there any way to have some sort of junk email protection when recieving email on your iphone?
    Thanks.

    No to both questions but the primary responsibility for spam filtering should be provided at the incoming mail server by the email account provider for the account - not with the email client used IMO.

  • Apex Mail and spam

    Hi all,
    I've created a bulk email screen in my app. so the users can email their contacts. Some email providers accept the mail no problem but others treat it as spam, I'm assuming that is because it is validating the From: address (which is a valid address) as not originating from the correct server? If I just send to one Yahoo address as a test, it will treat it as spam, so it isn't the volume of addresses causing the problem.
    How do I make the recipient's mail servers treat the messages as trustworthy? Do I need to set up one account that Apex can use for the From: address?
    regards,
    Malcolm.

    Hi Malcolm,
    You only need a local send mail if you plan to use APEX_MAIL which uses your local mail queue, but you don't use sendmail for UTL_SMTP. UTL_SMTP creates its own TCP connection with the destination server.
    I extracted one example procedure from the documentation page I linked above:
    PROCEDURE send_email(
    pFromUser IN VARCHAR2,
    pToUser IN VARCHAR2,
    pSubject IN VARCHAR2 DEFAULT NULL,
    pBody IN VARCHAR2 DEFAULT NULL) IS
    conn          UTL_SMTP.CONNECTION;
    crlf         VARCHAR2(2):= CHR(13) || CHR(10);
    EmailServer   VARCHAR2(60); := 'smtp.mlib.org';
    mesg          VARCHAR2(4000) := 'Hello World';
    pwd           VARCHAR2(200) := 'sEcReT';
    SenderAddress VARCHAR2(200) := '<[email protected]>';
    SenderName    VARCHAR2(50)  := 'damorgan11g';
    pToList       VARCHAR2(4000);
    vToReceivers  VARCHAR2(200);
    uname         VARCHAR2(200);
    BEGIN
      conn:= utl_smtp.open_connection(EmailServer, 25);
      utl_smtp.ehlo(conn, EmailServer);
      --utl_smtp.helo( conn, EmailServer );
      utl_smtp.command(conn, 'AUTH LOGIN');
      utl_smtp.command(conn, utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2(
        utl_encode.base64_encode( utl_raw.cast_to_raw(uname))));
      utl_smtp.command(conn, utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2(
        utl_encode.base64_encode( utl_raw.cast_to_raw(pwd))));
      utl_smtp.mail(conn, SenderAddress);
      utl_smtp.rcpt(conn, pToList);
      mesg:= 'Date: '|| TO_CHAR(SYSDATE, 'DD MON RR HH24:MI:SS' )|| crlf ||
             'From: "' || SenderName || '" ' || SenderAddress || crlf ||
             'Subject: ' || pSubject || crlf ||
             'To: '|| pToList || crlf||
             pBody || crlf || crlf;
      utl_smtp.data(conn, mesg);
      utl_smtp.quit(conn);
    EXCEPTION
      WHEN OTHERS THEN
        RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR(-20001,SQLERRM);
    END;
    /As you see, the procedure connects to the server, requests the AUTH LOGIN and provides username and password, before it starts to actually create the mail on the server.
    Hope this helps clarifying that issue. If it didn't, don't stop asking. ;)

  • How can I download my hotmail junk mail and other folders?

    I linked my account and i can only see inbox. Please help if possible, thanks!

    Because you are accessing the account as a POP account, which is the nature of a POP account.
    You can access the account as an Exchange account. All server stored mailboxes with the account will be available automatically when accessing the account with the iPod Touch Mail app along with all server stored mailboxes kept synchronized with the server.
    None of this is available with a POP account.

  • HT5361 Some of my email comes into "Inbox" but not all of that is reflected in "all Mail" so I have to check Inbox, All Mail and Spam to see all of my mail.  Also when I delete from All Mail it all pops back up again when I reopen it.  What to do?

    My goal is to get all incoming mail in the Inbox - and all deleted mail in the Trash...All mail seems to be redundant and causes duplication and confusion.
