Junk mail function slow after 10.4.8 update

I upgraded to 10.4.8 yesterday. Since then, whenever I mark a message as junk or change the junk setting on a message that is in the junk folder, I go into major beach ball mode. Have anyone else experienced this?

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of not having installed the update properly, so let's first make sure that the update is properly installed.
Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update using the Combo installer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
You may also want to take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • Mail painfully slow after 10.5.7 update

Mail is downloading incoming messages at 0.1-8kb per second. Before I updated to 10.5.7 it was downloading at 400-500kb per second. Anybody got a fix?

Yup, same problem for me (on this laptop and my Mac Pro tower).
I don't know if this is related, but I've also got problems with mailboxes continually being rebuilt - Mail seems to lose track of the messages and has to rebuild. Until the mailbox is rebuilt, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours if its got lots of messages, I'm locked out.
I've probably got over 60,000 email messages accumulated over the years. I suspected the "Envelope Index" file was causing problems. Trashing it and letting Mail rebuild the file did not solve the problem (though it took a painfully long time to do).
I seem to have found a work around by archiving a hierarchy of mailboxes with old messages and deleting them from Mail. This reduced the file size of "Envelope Index" from about 120 megs to about 112 megs. Now Mail is working better. My incoming data rate is NOT better, but at least mailboxes are not being randomly rebuilt.
    I also found this: http://www.friday.com/bbum/2007/03/02/vacuuming-mails-envelope-index-to-make-mai l-faster/
The article describes how to vacuum the "Envelope Index" file. This process further reduced the filesize to about 108 megs.
The slow data rate is killing me, I hope this is solved soon!

  • My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd.

My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd. Earlier I thought this behavior is due to spotlight indexing but it finished after 3 days. I deleted all caches from library. But no luck, still running extremely slow. I checked activity monitor for cpu usage, it shows above 90% is idle. The memory usage always shows PM - 4 GB, Memory Used 3.96 GB, VM - 4 GB, Swaped used 0 bytes, App Memory 1.82 GB, File Cache 1.44 GB, Wired Memory 480 MB.
    Thanks in adavnce for help.

Was it the combo updater that was installed or the OS X 10.9.3 update. There is a difference.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • Junk Mail only works after I disable and reenable Junk Mail Filtering

Since installing Tiger, junk mail filtering does not work automatically. It neither marks incoming messages as junk nor moves them to the Junk folder.
I am able to get it to work by selecting Preferences > Junk Mail and then unchecking "Enable junk mail filtering" and then checking it. Mail then asks to "Move Junk Messages" and when I respond "Yes" it marks the appropriate messages as Junk and moves them to the Junk folder.
Unfortunately, it only works for the messages already received. New mail that is "junk" is not marked as such and appears in my inbox and I have to repeat the manual process to get it removed.
Any suggestions for a more permanent solution?
    17 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4)

Will it also forget the "learned" junk mail? (That took years to learn.)
    No.
The MessageRules.plist file stores all Mail.app rules including the default Junk Mail rules.
All Junk Mail "learned" settings are stored in the LSMMap2 file also located at the first level within the Mail folder.
Since the LSMMap2 file can become corrupt as with any other file, this file should be included with a regular backup of the Mail folder and the Mail.app preference file at Home > Library Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist.
All Mail.app account information is stored in the Mail.app preference file.
If you experience any problems with the Junk Mail filter, your options are using the Junk Mail reset feature which resets all "learned" settings or replace the existing LSMMap2 file with a copy of a working backup copy with the Mail.app quit before doing so.
If the Mail.app preference file becomes corrupt (which I've never experienced but others have), when targeting the preference file requires re-entering all email account information. If you have a working backup copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file, you can replace the existing with the Mail.app quit before doing so without having to re-enter all email account information again.
You need to replace an existing backup copy of the Mail.app preference file only after making any changes to account information or when adding or deleting an account in Mail.
You may already have a backup strategy but if not, it is very important since it isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure. I learned my lesson the hard way about 5 years ago. Without warning, I experienced a complete hard drive failure. I didn't maintain a backup at the time and none of the existing data was recoverable.

  • Erase Junk Mail function disabled!

Hello folks, for some reason my "Erase Junk Mail" menu options are greyed out and disabled.
I cannot empty my Junk Mail folders.

Do you have "perform custom actions" checked in the Junk preferences? If you do, the Erase Junk Mail option will be grayed out.

  • Network slow after 10.4.5 update

Hi there, after installing the 10.4.5 update my PowerBook 12" is really slow when accessing network services. Web, Mail are impossibly slow.
I have a cable modem broadband connection with a Belkin wireless router sharing the connection. The laptop connects via Airport and uses DHCP for autoconfiguration.
I have tried the fix suggested on MacFixit of putting the DNS manually in the TCP/IP settings. Also I have turned off IPv6 which was also suggested to no avail.
My other laptops with earlier system revisions are running fine (I am using one to write this) and I have tried the Mac on another network with the same effect so it has to be something that 10.4.5 has done to my poor alubook
    Can anyone help please.

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
    MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
"After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update."

  • Running slow after downloading a mandatory update

running slow after downloading an update!
I had zero complaints until today when I downloaded an update and restarted my machine.
Now It feels like I'm back in the PC world.
    Any suggestions?

If it is Safari loading web pages slowly, I would suggest http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3230 or http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594, one of these will surely help. If not, as previously suggested, more detail will greatly help.

  • Mail behaving poorly after 10.4.10 update

Just updated the MBP to 10.4.10 about an hour ago. Now Mail is doing the following things:
    • Will not automatically open a new message and address it when you click on a mail link on a website (e.g., craigslist).
    • Will not quit. I have to force quit, every time.
    • Occasionally, I'll start a new Mail message, but it will not let me type in the window.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Did you install the update while doing other things with the computer?
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
The first and third issues you describe indicate that some Launch Services cache or preferences has become corrupt — not sure about the second, though, but repairing the disk might take care of that as well.
The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for the Launch Services issue probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
    4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.

  • IPhoto slideshow is very very very slow after the latest software update

As the subject states, iPhoto slideshows are very slow: after clicking on the slideshow-button first nothing happens, after a while the screen goes black (that lasts about a minute or so) and the (finally) the slideshow starts. which is very annoying because it displays no options screen at first as it used to do, it just starts using very annoying standard music... quitting slideshow again to go to the options menu takes ages!! this problem started after the latest software update... way to go Apple...
    suggestions anyone?!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Well I haven’t seen this problem.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    2. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Mail typing slow after Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite, I am experiencing slow typing response in Mac Mail.  Sometimes, Mail is one or two words behind my typing.  I have to stop and let it catch up occasionally.

  • Mail slow after 10.7.2 update

    All,
After updating to 10.7.2, Mail has been extremely sluggish. There is frequently a time delay between my input (e.g. mouse/trackpad scroll or click) and Mail's response. Loading a message in the preview pane takes 5-10 seconds, and multiple message selection often doesn't work on the first try. Is there something I should do to streamline/compress mailboxes, or does this have something to do with iCloud?
    Thanks!
    Lou

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Mail terribly slow after upgrading to Yosemite

Is there a way to correct the problem.  There is quite a lag even while scrolling down to different messages.  I have actually ended up deleting the wrong message due to this.  It is a gmail account accessed via the Mail App on a MacBook Pro laptop.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Important: This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you created. If you want to preserve that data, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
