Junk mail gets through

Hi, I have the latest version of Mail (as of Sept /06) . Recently I've started getting tons of spam. Nothing I do seems to stop it. I try to use spam filtering (training for at least 2 months) but as soon as its enabled (automatic) the vast majority of my new mail (including things that don't have a junk icon beside them indicating they are junk) end up in the junk folder. Any ideas anyone ?Thanks

I have 4 regular imap mail accounts and receive at least 300 spam messages a day and JunkMatcher catches 99.5% of them. It can be a little overzealous and send a good message to my junk folder but I don't mind if I have to find one or two good messages in my junk folder if all the real junk gets filtered.

    In the last few days it appears there's a good deal more obvious junk mail getting through the Mail app's filtering process. Is there something I can do, or has something changed in the software? I checked, and my prefs are set correctly to filter junk & keep it out of my inbox.

    My Apple Mail client is set up for:-
    Account type ---- iCloud IMAP
    Description--------iCloud

    I have no rules for junk and this is the setup for Junk mail in the Mail preferences.
    I do not know what to suggest, Has I said if I get 2 or 3 junk mails a month that is about it with those settings so Apple must be filtering my mail very well, why not yours I would suggest you contact them.

  • No POP3 incoming mail getting through to Thunderbi...

    I'm posting at the end of my tether here because I can see that other people have had similar problems and none of them seem to be resolved consistently...
    So OK - this is what happened. I have Windows 7 64-bit Home Edition and I've used Thunderbird perfectly happily with it for 18 months with v. few problems until I had to reconfigure a profile on the PC about 3 weeks ago and since then the mail.btinternet.com server is refusing to download into either of the 2 profiles we have.
    The error message - An error occurred with POP3 mail server. Mail server mail.btinternet.com responded:
    No problem with the same server for outgoing SMTP - that goes out quite happily and I just KNOW somebody's going to say that they've got the same problem...
    I have been through the support call centre with and without remote assistance, the Mozilla support forum, downloaded every free compatible email client going and the only thing that will get mail through the POP as specified in all the help tutorials and FAQs is WindowsLive which I do not want to use because it's webmail  and I want to use a client to keep my mail on my PC not online and certainly not in yet another online location...
    So is there an answer out there? You're my last port of call before I book into the funny farm because this is seriously driving me nuts now

    It's definitely not the configuration as this was the account that BT support tried to troubleshoot remotely, so it's not just me being a clutz for once - lol
    Apart from that the only other thing I think I can try now is to skip out my Inbox and see if that frees things up somewhat - looks like my weekend's gonna be full of challenge and determination

    We've recently installed an exchange 2010 with forefront security for exchange.  We where happy to receive very little to no spam in our inbox.
    But now since a week or so we get a lot of spam through. Very obvious spam like this:

    This in plain text is obviously spam. The header of the email says SCL -1.
    Does anyone have any idea how come this is happening?

  • Mail not getting through to my .mac address

    Everyone trying to send mail to my .mac address ([email protected]) is getting mail bounced back with this message:
    "You do not have permission to send to this recipient."
    What the heck is this all about? Sometimes mail gets through, but not often. Everyone is getting the same message.
    How can I fix this? Help, please.

    This topic did appear to be about sending, but yet the advice about Port number change would only relate to sending problems. If you are having a problem sending, while using the smtp.mac.com as the Outgoing Server, the change to Port 587 may help. This is covered in both Mail Help, and at the document at the link below:

  • Turning on "Junk Mail Filtering" Crashes Mail when using GMAIL IMAP

    So I thought I had my Gmail IMAP satisfactorily set up through Mail, then I turned on Junk Mail filtering through preferences. Immedaitely Gmail stopped synchronizing (I still can't get it to sync) and Mail starts hanging on basic tasks and will not quit properly. In fact, I have had to "Force Quit" the application ever since changing this status.
    Anyone else having this issue?

    I have now confirmed that when I turn Junk Mail filtering off via preferences, Gmail will start syncing again and the application will quit properly.

  • IPhone, .Mac IMAP, and Junk Mail!

    I have seen lots of posts regarding this, but no definite answers. It seems like a lot of people are wondering if there is a way to deal with this issue...
    The .Mac email does a fine job of filtering junk mail. When I check it through the mac.com website or on my MBP everything is fine. However my iPhone constantly recieves the junk emails and they are not removed until checked by one of the previous two methods.
    Is there a way to prevent the junk mail from being sent to the iPhone besides leaving my computer on all day and forcing the hard drive to stay on which is the most asinine idea I have ever heard of?
    p.s. I'm not talking about junk mail getting sent to the "junk" folder under .Mac on the iPhone. I'm talking about it getting sent straight to the inbox. I know that you can uncheck the "keep junk mail stored on server" setting to stop it from but getting sent to the junk folder on the iphone but I don't care about that. I want messages that .Mac would filter out when I check them on the mac.com to not be sent to my iPhone only being deleted AFTER I log into mail.mac.com
    In other words are we stuck with .Mac only running junk filter when the website is connected?

    I have a junk mail folder under my .Mac account on my iPhone. If you enable Junk mail filtering on your .mac account on the website and also have selected move it to the junk folder then .mac will create a junk folder which like any other folder is IMAP, meaning it will show up in your iphone.
    My problem is that junk mail that .mac on the website knows is junk gets sent to my inbox on my iphone. Once I go in and check my mail from the website it dumps all the junk mail. If I then go back to my iphone and refresh the inbox of course all of the junk mail will now be gone. But this is not how it should be. If .mac has a junk filter in place at the server it should run without having to open mail.mac.com.

  • Filtering junk mail

    Several times a day I'm receiving unwanted messages from someone wanting to sell me stock. The entire email address (both sides of "@") changes on every email, as does the subject line. There is never any content in the email itself. The content comes as an attachment.
    I haven't been able to figure out a set of rules that will consign these straight to the trash can. Is there a way this can be done?

    The email gets through to you, and then your rules process it. The rules won't stop the mail coming to your computer, but should help sort it. If you have a rule that checks to see if the sender of a message is in your address book, and if not mark it as junk, then what happens next depends on your junk mail settings. You would need to have "move it to the junk mailbox" selected in the junk preferences.
    If this is what you have, and it is not working, then start a new thread with more details in it.

    Who is your email account with? Can you go into that account via the web and browse through the settings to set up spam and junk folders so that they are never downloaded? The problem with this of course is that some programmes wrongly identify such emails at times and there will be occasions when genuine emails are not downloaded to your device. It will be a toss up between periodically checking these folders via the web and putting up with unnecessary alerts.
    The other option is to switch off alerts for all emails. Ths is the system I operate.

  • First time Mac user, don't "get" junk mail

    I guess I'm not sure I understand junk mail. the mail program sends email it thinks is junk to that folder and much of the time, it is junk. When its not I mark it as not junk mail.
    However what is the purpose of this? For example I get a lot of advertising mail from businesses (for example Macy's) and the mail program calls it junk and I think so too. However I thought the purpose of this whole idea was to limit my junk mail. But i get ads from Macy's every single day.. (and lots of other places). When a sender is identified as junk isn't the mail program then supposed to block it or something? What is the point of the whole junk mail box if I still have to go thru it to sort out the few that are deemed junk and are not if it continually allows junk mail in?
    I'd love it to just delete the mail "I" deem as junk, I don't want to have to even go thru it.
    Am I missing something?

    Mail has to 'learn' which mail is junk and which isn't, according to your personal preferences. It will start by making a guess, and marking some of your mail as junk. You need to spend a little bit of time for a few days going through new mail and marking it yourself to tell Mail what you want to keep and what is junk to you. Systems like mail usually need to have about 200 examples of mail designated junk and non-junk to get an accurate feel.
    Initially, as someone said, you should set Mail Preferences to leave mail it thinks is junk in your inbox (just in case it thinks something is junk that you want to keep). Once you're happy that it's got the message ('trained' in the jargon), you cna change the preference to move it to the junk folder, or delete it straight away. Make sure you find any 'good' messages that it mistakes for junk
    To make things a bit quicker. If you sort your inbox by sender or subject, you could select groups of messages to mark at one go.

    I assume these are POP accounts and all computers are set to remove from Server after downloading.
    So on the non dominant ones... Mail Preferences>Accounts, highlight an account, Advanced tab, uncheck remove from Server, just have the main dominant one remove from server.
    Or get/setup IMAP accounts.

  • Can't get rid of pesky junk mail

    I use the Apple Mail Version 6.5 (1508) application for my emails.  I have found the Junk Mail feature to be very helpful.  If I label a message "Junk," It is treated as junk when I receive the same message later on.  However, there is one pesky junk mail that is being sent to me about 5 times per week that ignores the junk mail label and does not go to the trash.  After labeling it Junk several times, I gave up and went to the Rules function and made a rule that, when it is received, it is to be deleted.  That works just fine on my Mac, but I know it is still being sent because it still shows up on the email app on my iPhone.
    Questions:
    1.  Why doesn't Mail succeed in tagging that message as Junk so that it will go to Junk Mail like all the other stuff?
    2.  Is there anything I can do to force that message to Junk Mail?  I'd rather not have to use Rules to get rid of it.
    3.  Is there any kind of Junk Mail filter available for an iPhone 4S that runs on iOS 6.1.3?  I've submitted that to Apple as a suggestion, but, of course, I've had no reply.

    I went to my provider's web site and set my email Rule to delete any message containing the unique name used in the sender.  So far the string of emails has stopped, but sometimes spammers take holidays off, so I'll wait to see what happens later, but I'm really excouraged as of now.  Thanks again for the suggestion.
