Junk mail in gmail

I get anything up to 90 spam e-mails per day. How can I reduce this ?
Ilex

Also, these emails that you get.  Are you absolutely sure they are "bulk" SPAM emails.  I find it hard to believe that GMail isn't blocking out the majority of that for you if it really is bulk SPAM.  What I mean by bulk is actual SPAM that isn't marketing material or anything else that's coming from a legitimate source that you've subscribed to.  If these emails are coming from subscription lists you've consiously added yourself to during online shopping or whatnot, then feel free to just unsubscribe to them.  I would start with logging into all your online accounts with organizations that you have and go into your account preferences and unsubscribe via that means first.  Give it a week or two and see what the decrease is.  Head off the remainder of the amount from there.  If the email is coming from a legitimate place that complies with antispam logistics, then there's no reason not to do an unsubscribe via the links provided in the emails.... these places don't resubmit your info to other organizations and do it again.  Again, I can't tell you what's legitimate or not, you have to figure that one out on your own, that's why I said it would be better to do the manual unsubscribes in each of your accounts you have with various institutions.  Maybe even call them directly and get taken off the lists... it can be done.

  • How can I delete junk mail from Gmail

This is driving me crazy. I have defined my Gmail account as IMAP in my Mail app. However there is a mailbox with the name All Mail but no Inbox. How can I just see valid messages and how can I mark messages as junk and remove them from All Messages and never see any messages from these junk senders again? For example JC Penney sends about one message a day and I have to manually delete them. I've looked at the Gmail settings via webmail and haven't found a way to get rid of them.

You could enable Mail's filter as well if you want.  If you do so, I suggest you tell Mail to use Gmail's Spam folder as Mail's Junk folder.  Do this by selecting the Gmail Spam folder, then go to the mail menu bar under the "Mailbox" menu "Use This Mailbox For" -> "Junk".  This way, when you mark a mail as junk within Apple Mail, it will move to the Gmail spam folder, thus telling Gmail it is spam.
Alternatively, you could use Rules to kick out some of those mail messages you routinely get particularly if they always come from the same e-mail or have the similar subjects.

  • Why can't Apple Mail filter out junk mail like Gmail?

Gmail does a great job of filtering out spam.  Lately, iCloud is doing a miserable job.  It appears to have gotten much worse in recent months.  Apple's official advice on this is laughably ineffective.  Why can't Apple's do as well as Google at this?

How would we know?  We aren't iOS developers.

  • 3rd party junk mail filter for Mail?

Does anybody know of one that works? I have been dutifully labeling junk mail as junk, and it just doesn't work. I am so sick of graphic images and lubricious subject lines. Anybody? Does anything exist that really works?

Gmail puts all the spam messages inside a mailbox called spam, I've configured Mail to bind the spam folder in the server to the junk mailbox. Spam messages are download but correctly to junk mailbox.
If I create a filter to move all email to inbox I believe this filter will move spam messages, that cames from gmail already in the right spam folder, to inbox.
The option you suggested is already marked. The problem is that Mail sometimes gives false positives as junk mail and GMail doesn't that is why I want to set Mail to not filter gmail messages.
I belive I was clearer now, let me know if it still confusing.

  • Turning on "Junk Mail Filtering" Crashes Mail when using GMAIL IMAP

So I thought I had my Gmail IMAP satisfactorily set up through Mail, then I turned on Junk Mail filtering through preferences. Immedaitely Gmail stopped synchronizing (I still can't get it to sync) and Mail starts hanging on basic tasks and will not quit properly. In fact, I have had to "Force Quit" the application ever since changing this status.
    Anyone else having this issue?

I have now confirmed that when I turn Junk Mail filtering off via preferences, Gmail will start syncing again and the application will quit properly.

  • Junk Mail Filtering - is it me or is it just rubbish?

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere, but didn't have the patience to wade through all the threads. Hopefully someone can help...
Frankly, I think the filtering on Mail (using 3.5 with OSX 10.5.6) is hopeless. Simply put, I've tried configuring it every which way in Preferences but the same issues persist. The main one being that when I configure to "exclude" those in my address book and/or previous recipients list from junk mail filtering ...people in my address book (SPECIFICALLY ME) still end up in the junk mail folder.
I have 2 accounts: Mail.com (POP3) and Gmail (IMAP) and I use an iPhone for mobile access. And I have a work email. All three are in my address card in Address Book.
Yet whenever I send myself (or anyone else) an email -- either from work or from my iPhone or even from within Mail -- it still ends up in the junk mail folder.
I think the problem is that Mail's filtering doesn't look at email addresses. It must look at how the name is set up??? i.e., LAST FIRST or FIRST LAST, etc. and when any of these don't match up it puts it into junk mail folder????
It just seems rubbish to me. Outlook had much more sophisticated filtering options\rule set up.
Anyone got any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks.

If you have multiple email addresses in your card in Address Book, which messages are going to Junk, and what email address was used?
All three emails go to junk. My work to either personal address. Gmail to Mail and Mail to Gmail emails all go to junk
Have you tried setting up the Junk filter so that:
If any of the following conditions are met:
*Sender is not in my Address Book*
*Sender is not in my Previous Recipients*
    Message is Junk Mail
    Perform the following actions:
*Move message to mailbox: (Junk mailbox On My Mac)*
Yep. Tried that. Still didn't work. Even tried ticking "not junk" on each of the several tests I've sent myself -- and then re-sent more tests, which still ended up in junk????
As I said, I've tried virtually every possible configuration of boxes ticked and unticked and nothing...
My latest setting (using your advanced rules above) were:
    Enable Junk Mail - ticked
When Junk Mail arrives - 'perform custom actions'
Msgs Exempt - In address book and previous recipients both ticked. Use my full name unticked
    Trust ISP headers - unticked
Filter before applying rules - have tried this both ticked and unticked... same result
    Thanks,
    The Smoking Man
PS - Should add that when others send me email to the Gmail or Mail accounts they properly go to inbox, not junk. It's just when I send myself something (anything, really)...

  • Apple Mail and Gmail IMAP

With the iPhone coming to Verizon soon, I'd like to move back to Apple Mail from Gmail, but still want to keep Gmail as my source because my domain is setup with Google Apps but mostly because of the unparalleled spam filtering Gmail has. My problem is that even though I've configured Apple Mail exactly as Google recommends (shown below), I still have some issues.
From the Mail menu, click Preferences > *Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors*
    Drafts:
Store draft messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Sent:
Store sent messages on the server > *do NOT check*
    Junk:
Store junk messages on the server > checked
Delete junk messages when > Never
    Trash:
Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox > *do NOT check*
Store deleted messages on the server > *do NOT check*
I want to have true IMAP functionality here, but I'm not getting it. Sent messages work fine...if I send a message, it shows up in Apple Mail in the Sent folder and when I go to Gmail it is also in the Sent folder. BUT...when I delete a message in Apple Mail it goes to the Gmail *All Mail* folder (in Apple Mail and Gmail) and never shows up in the Gmail Trash on either Apple Mail or Gmail...where it should. I've tried changing the settings under *Apple Mail > Trash* but that doesn't fix the problem.
I realize some of you might be inclined to say "It's Google problem...ask there" but I'm hoping a Gmail user here might have had this same issue before. Even as a dedicated Apple person for many years, I still can't give up Gmail and their spam filtering that Apple Mail can't come close to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

  • Using Mail with gmail (first time setup)

I have been using gmail for years. I usually just use the webbased email so that I can check it from any computer. Now I'm interested in setting up Mail because I'm getting an ipod touch next week and I want to be able to use the Mail program on that. I successfully got Mail to logon to my gmail account, but then it started downloading a massive amount of emails-- apparently ALL my emails rather than just the current ones in my inbox. So here is my question-- can I make Mail understand the customizations I've already done in Gmail, or do I have to do them all over again? Here are the various features I'm using in gmail that I need to set up:
    1) I have several different email accounts forwarding to my gmail account.
    2) I use the different labels in gmail
    3) I have some filters set up-- so that certain junk mail bypasses the inbox and gets archived right away
    4) I have a lot of mail that is already archived and not in the inbox.
I also want to still be able to use web based gmail when I'm at my work computer, so I'd like to make all these different filters and stuff match up as much as possible. Any advice? Thanks!

No one? Well, I've figured most of it out (I'm using IMAP) but I have one more question-- when I delete a message from the inbox in Mail, it gets deleted in gmail rather than archived. What do I do to make a message get archived in gmail?

  • Why doesn't mail put my junk mail in my junk mailbox

Since I started using 10.9.2, the Mail program has misbehaved much less and I have been able to return to using it from Gmail. However, it puts all my junk mail (which it SAYS is junk mail) in my Inbox instead of the junk mailbox - even though I have instructed it in Preferences to move it to the Junk mailbox. Why? What can I do to correct this?

Can't anyone come up with an answer to this question? I'd be very grateful for any ideas.

  • Spam fighting Idea for Email Users-Beyond Junk Mail

I get so much junk mail I was hoping there was a way to automatically bounce back anything that got classified as junk. Then the important person who sent the email could use the old telephone for contact if they found they weren't getting their communication through. There would be an added bonus of all the emails that were junk would look the same (Mail Delivery System) and faster to delete.
Does anyone else think this is a good idea or is it just stupid.

Do you use this email address for public purposes, such as for online purchases, or for website access if an email address is required for access, or provide it for anything and everything when an email address is requested or required?
Do you automatically render all HTML received? If so, and a spammer includes embedded images or objects with HTML formatting that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed, you are notifying the spammer that your email address is valid or "known good" causing even more spam to be received. When the Mail.app's Junk Mail filter correctly marks a message as junk when received, and the spammer includes embedded images or objects that must be rendered from a remote server to be viewed, these will not be rendered when such a message is marked as junk as a security measure. But this does not apply if such a junk message is not marked as junk when received, which is why automatically rendering all HTML when received is not a good idea.
Have you ever selected a link included with a spam message - any link, and especially a remove your address from the circulation list link? If so, you have done nothing but notify the spammer that your email address is valid or "known good" causing even more spam to be received.
Spammers sell/trade their "known good" email address lists to each other, causing even more spam.
If you have done any or all of these things, you have inadvertently and unknowingly added to the amount of spam you are receiving.
Once an email address is so badly compromised, it is impossible to get the cat back in the bag.
The best thing to do is to have a personal email address that is used to exchange email with family and friends only. Do not use this email address for online purchases, or for any other public consumption. Get a free Hotmail account that is accessed via webmail only using a browser to be used for online purchases and for public consumption.
A Gmail account is free, can be accessed as an IMAP or POP account with an email client on your computer, has webmail access, has an authenticated SMTP server so you can send messages with the account regardless the ISP being used for your internet connection, and Gmail has a good spam filter at their incoming mail server.
You don't want to reply to, bounce back, select any links, or render any HTML for spam for a number of reasons.

  • Junk Mail Filter in Lion: Any Better or Still Mediocre?

The junk mail filter in Mail is not that great. I have several domains that I receive mail from and I get about 90 false negatives per day. I select the spam generally and mark as junk mail, but that seems to do nothing. The same sender/same subject/etc. seems to get through every time. It does catch a lot of spam, but the effectiveness of "mark as junk mail". I am not convinced that marking the spam has any effect at all - maybe I shouldn't bother.
I am still running snow leopard and haven't upgraded to Lion. I am wondering if Lion has better permanent spam erradication.
    thanks
    JIim

Sigh... Jeffery and Michael, you are like the Apple Support people... you simply do not comprehend what is happening or what people are talking about.
First off, the O'Reilly article is from 2004... that's 7 years ago. If you want to believe that OSX has not changed in 7 years, that's your perogative, but it is clearly not in tune with reality. Nor with what Apple is selling. The article may or may not still be accurate... there is no way of knowing.
It would be nice if the Junk mail filter actually worked the way the O'Reilly article describes. I believe that it did back in Panther, when the article was written. And it might have still worked that way in Snow Leopard, but I do not believe it did. The last I remember it working the way the article describes it was in Leopard. Under Lion, the Junk mail filtering is simpy NOT WORKING -- period.  It can't even recognize Junk mail flagged by either me.com or gmail.com.... despite "Trust junk mail headers in messages" being selected.... and BOTH of those sites have no problem flagging junk mail.
Second. Yeah, mail rules "sort of" work. The problem with them under Lion, the same as it was under Snow Leopard, is that they are simply NOT applied until you make a change to the rules and get the "apply rules" pop-up. The impression I get from Apple Support's non-responses is ... they are not supposed to be applied "automatically." Or, "they are working as intended," not as expected!
Tony's response is the most useful one I've seen so far.

  • MY iCloud Mail Bombarded with Junk Mail

MobileMe wasn't the greatest with junk mail, but since the transition to iCloud, my inbox is bombarded with with junk mail every day now. Has anyone else noticed a noticible increase in junk mail after the transition from Mobileme>iCloud.
    1) Comcast account - virtually no junk
    2) .com webhost account - virtually no junk
    3) gmail - virtually no junk
    4) iCloud - ridiculous amount of junk

Wow,  Nothing like bringing an old thread to life.  I still get spam. It's a lot better since I've learned how to set up proper Mail Rules. The Rules only work for high volumes of Junk mail in which the senders address doesn't change. True hardcore spammers know all about rules and how to get around them by constanly changing their address. If Apple can't filter them out at the server level, you don't have much of a chance.
But notice the addresses. If they are consistant, a Mail Rule will help.

  • Any way to just send outgoing mail via gmail, not get incoming?

    Hey guys,
I currently use the Gmail app because I get a lot of junk mail on there and I rather not have my blackberry filled with gmail messages. Therefore, I just use my school email address since all those emails are important.
I do send out a lot of emails from my phone and I would like to use my gmail address to do that instead of my school address.
So......is there any way I can hook up my gmail to the push account, but only send emails from it? I don't want to be receiving emails from my gmail account. I use the gmail app for that since it keeps it more "clean" since gmail groups emails together like threaded SMS
    Thanks guys

You can either set those two conditions by adding a filter. Or when you first go into Filters, there's a section that says "When no filters apply". You can set that to Do not forwards messages to device
